on’t let 2018 be one of those years where you just stay home, eat chips, and fall asleep in front of the TV every night. You’re better than that! Look, we know The Voice is on for like two hours almost every night of the week, but is that a good excuse for not taking care of yourself? Human bodies crave exercise and movement (almost as much as they crave performance-based reality TV shows) ! Don’t let the winter chill keep you from staying active. No excuses!

chool, homework, holidays, shorter daylight hours, and an ever-increasing pile of essential cold-weather gear become a nearly insurmountable obstacle in the way of staying active during the winter. Adults and children alike often experience a decrease in physical activity as the cold sets in. However, there are options for every lifestyle for bringing exercise inside during the school year. One of the biggest hurdles for families with busy schedules is finding the time to make sure everyone is getting enough exercise. According to the Centers for Disease Control, children and adolescents should do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day to ensure the development of healthy bodies and motor skills. However, that hour doesn’t need to be achieved all at once, according to Dr. Saori Braun of UW-Eau Claire’s kinesiology department. Parents can find 15 or 20 minutes at a time to inspire their kids to move around, and the time adds up quickly. The next step is to work physical activity into a family’s lifestyle. It can be as easy as inviting children to help out with age-appropriate housework, or as involved as signing them up for classes at one (or more) of the various indoor recreation centers in the Chippewa Valley. Helping keep the house tidy is a great way for children to stay moving inside, according to Braun. Laundry, for example, requires children to squat and lift clothing, which is a resistance exercise, and carry it to and from the washer and dryer. Taking the laundry up and down stairs is an aerobic activity that gets the heart pumping and works the respiratory system. Once the chores are done, turn on some music and dance! Dancing is something families can enjoy together, and when parents engage with their children through dance they show them that physical activity is fun and fulfilling. Parental involvement is very impor-
tant to instilling a love of activity in young people, Braun said. Studies show that when children have active caretakers, they are more likely to be active themselves. “It’s a behavior change that has to happen in adults, so they can be role models for kids,” Braun said of developing exercise habits. If you need to take the show on the road, look for ways to get the family active while you’re out. Mayo Clinic Health System sponsors a play area for small children in Oakwood Mall that has safe equipment for children to climb and play on. If your child is old enough, when you’re at the grocery store allow him or her to walk instead of riding in the cart. The Chippewa Valley has a multitude of options for indoor fitness in the form of events, activities, classes and leagues. Plan a weekly family outing to Hobbs Ice Arena for open skating, go bowling or rollerblading, or visit a trampoline park. For more structured activity, parents can enroll their children in any of the multitude of classes offered in the area. The Eau Claire YMCA and the Eau Claire Indoor Sports Center offer sports leagues and lessons for youths and adults. Braun admits she might be biased, but recommends gymnastics as an excellent choice for young people. Even beginner classes for toddlers encourage healthy bone, muscle, and respiratory development through running, jumping, and climbing. “Play is so much more important for kids than making them exercise,” Braun said. When movement is fun, children make positive associations with being active and are more likely to pursue physical activity later in life. Classes and group activities allow children to play with others, which helps develop social skills alongside physical ones. “When kids play together with other kids, there’s a sense of unity,” Braun said. This feeling, along with working together with others, develops a

child’s self-confidence. Exercise is helpful to academic and intellectual improvement as well. When children are active, the blood flow to their brains is increased, aiding in brain development. Additionally, children who get enough physical playtime are better able to focus in more sedentary situations such as class, improving behavior and retention. As children grow into adolescents, their playtime can become more

structured with classes and organized sports. Basketball and volleyball are great for continuing bone development: Specifically, jumping causes good stress on bones, which induces structural improvement. “Taking care of kids, that in itself is a lot of physical activity,” Braun said. But it’s worthwhile. Maintaining an active family lifestyle helps ensure that children grow up healthy and strong and teaches them to love moving.

SMALL CHANGES, BIG REWARDS H OW TO AD D AC T I V I T Y I N T H E M O R N I N G , AT WO RK , A N D AT HO ME WORDS: KIM LARSEN

inding small ways to add activity and healthier choices into your daily routine can make big differences over time. Because small changes are easier to incorporate into your life than drastic ones, you will have a better chance of maintaining these changes over time. Challenge yourself to incorporate three small changes into your day throughout the week. Before you know it, you will have a few new healthy habits!
BEFORE GOING TO THE OFFICE 1. Improve your balance. Practice standing on one leg while brushing your teeth to improve balance. Don’t forget to alternate legs! 2. Stretch each day. Get up five minutes early and incorporate a stretching routine to your morning ritual. Stretching isn’t just for mornings, so go ahead and get your five minutes in at any time during the day!
3. Eat breakfast! Start your day with a healthy breakfast. Adding fruit, yogurt, egg whites, or smoothies to your morning are healthy options to help you get started especially if you are a breakfast skipper! 4. Drink more water. Bring a water bottle with you to work and finish drinking it by the end of your work day. 5. Take extra steps. Don’t search for the closest parking spot! Park farther away from your office entrance at work for easy extra steps.
OFFICE STRATEGIES Enlist the support of co-workers and work together to create a healthier environment. 1. Walk. Incorporate walking lunch breaks with co-workers. Eating a healthy lunch and walking during your breaks does double duty for your health. You will reduce your unhealthy calorie intake and burn calories. It’s a
win-win. 2. Build core strength. Use an exercise ball instead of a chair at your desk to build core strength. 3. Change your break room or office snacking habits. Bring healthy versions of favorite snacks to the office. If you have a candy jar (or drawer) at your desk, eliminate the snacks or replace them with healthier choices. Office break rooms filled with high sugar and high-fat snacks can be hazardous to your health! Fruits and veggies make great choices. You can even opt for a protein bar as a meal replacement or snack.
AT HOME 1. Family exercise. Whether you walk with your dog or you walk with your whole family, taking advantage of local trails and surrounding yourself in nature is an easy exercise option. It’s not about speed or distance. It’s about
VolumeOne.org 35 Jan. 10, 2018
getting out there and moving. Enjoy the views! 2. Make a game of it. If you’re spending time in front of the television with your children, incorporate mini workouts during the commercials. Sit ups, push ups, jumping jacks – you choose the movements. A typical hour of television will contain approximately 15 minutes of commercials, so get off the couch and move! 3. Sleep. A good night’s sleep is essential to your health. Go to bed each night at the same time to develop a sleeping ritual. You will begin to train your body to recognize it’s your time to rest. IN THE NEW YEAR, FOCUS ON MOVING THE CHAINS WHEN WORKING ON IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH, SMALL STEPS CAN ADVANCE YOU TOWARD ULTIMATE GOAL WORDS: KYLE FRANK
BROKENSPHERE / CREATIVE COMMONS
T
he New Year is here! Were you one of the millions of people who set some new goal or resolution to work on in 2018? If so, to help you reach it, I think you should watch some football. I’m serious! Let me explain: You see, the Packers can teach us about a lot more than just football, and although our beloved team in green and gold didn’t make it to the playoffs like most of us had hoped, there is still something we can take away from them when it comes to pursuing our own goals. When you think about the goal of an NFL game, it’s pretty straightforward: to win. Your goal is the same. You want to “win” in an area of your life, which is why you set some new goals for yourself Dec. 31. In order to walk away with a win on your personal goals, you need a strategy, just like NFL teams need a strategy to win the game. When we start talking strategy, we could go in a million different directions: discuss offense, defense, special teams, etc. However, we’re going to keep it simple and focus on one main thing – or one
group of people, rather. On the football field, we all seem to forget about those guys who stand on the sideline holding
IF AARON RODGERS DROPS BACK, MISSES THE LINEBACKERS COMING AT HIM FROM THE SIDES, AND GETS SACKED, DOES HE GET BACK IN THE HUDDLE AND SAY “I DON’T KNOW GUYS, I WAS GOING FOR A TOUCHDOWN THERE AND IT DIDN’T WORK. LET’S QUIT”?
the chains. You know who I’m talking about, right? They run out on the field with those two posts attached to chains when it’s questionable whether or not the team on offense has made a first down in order to keep possession of the ball. Entire games can be won or lost based off of a couple of inches! You see, in a nutshell, the entire strategy the Packers use to put some points on the board is to move those chains. For example, could Aaron Rodgers throw a Hail Mary every single play? Sure, he could – and it might be an interesting game to watch – but it’s probably not the best strategy
VolumeOne.org 37 Jan. 10, 2018
if he wants to take his team to victory. His best bet is probably to move those chains just a little bit with each play, until he undoubtedly ends up in the end zone for a touchdown. Rinse and repeat. Likewise, if Rodgers drops back, misses the linebackers coming at him from the sides, and gets sacked, does he get his guys back in the huddle and say “I don’t know guys, I was going for a touchdown there and it didn’t work. Let’s quit”? I sure hope that’s not what he’s saying. Most likely, he gets in that huddle, tries to figure out what went wrong, re-strategizes, gets back out on the line, and tries to get those chains moving until they score. Your strategy this year in pursuit of your resolutions should be the same as A-Rod and the green and gold. Every day, every week, and every month, find small things that you can do to move your own chains forward, inch by inch if need be. Don’t expect to throw a Hail Mary pass every time and hope for it to be a success. Also, be prepared to get sacked and set back a few yards, because most likely that’s going to happen sometimes. If you anticipate such tackles, you can plan ahead for them and be ready to adjust when necessary. It’s the beginning of the year, and we have all of 2018 ahead of us to score and win. Are you ready to make this your best year yet? I hope so. The ball is in your hands: Ready, set, hike! GOING YOGA? HOW TO FIND A TEACHER HOT? COLD? FAST? SLOW? THE VALLEY OFFERS A VAST ARRAY OF YOGA OPTIONS W O R D S : C H R I S T O P H E R H AY D E N / P H O T O S : A N D R E A P A U L S E T H
H
aving grown up around here in the 1980s and ’90s, I think I can safely say that the alternative health boom of the ’90s was only distantly echoed in the Valley. Practitioners of yoga, for instance, were few and far between, and yoga schools even fewer and farther. Eau Claire just had one official studio, The Yoga School of Eau Claire. What a difference 20 years can make! Like our burgeoning bike trails, farmers markets, and music scene, yoga has rapidly taken deep roots here. Many have discovered the benefits this meditative exercise brings to their mind and body, and many are becoming interested in trying a class. Faster than you can say “Namaste,” we have seen a gentle explosion of schools, teachers, and styles. All of the options now available can be more than a little confusing for the would-be yogi or yogini. There’s yoga for athletes, for couch potatoes, for men, for pregnancy; there’s hot yoga, cold yoga, fast yoga, and slow yoga. Where do you even start? As a mind-body wellness enthusiast, I set out to answer that question, interviewing a number of local teachers about their specific types of yoga, and their advice for newcomers. Out of their collective learned wisdom, several themes emerged:
HOW MUC H OM DO YOU WANT IN YOU R YOGA ? Some classes are purely physical, and give you a good stretching and strengthening workout, without any of the meditative or spiritual elements yoga is often associated with. “Power yoga,” “fitness yoga,” or YogaFit are designed this way, and resemble a typical fitness class, but with different exercises. Donna Sauter, a yoga teacher with a long history as a fitness instructor, described these classes as being accessible to mainstream fitness enthusiasts. On the other hand, as yoga has roots in Indian culture and spirituality, some classes delve into these areas as well, using terms from

Sanskrit (an ancient Indian language), and including meditation, chanting of special words like “Om,” spiritual language, and imagery. Some people find that this gives them a deeper experience and works with their mind and emotions, but some view this as conflicting with their own religious or spiritual views. Certain types of yoga, such as Universal Yoga, start with more physical practice, but become more meditative with time, using guided breathing as a bridge between the two. Sheri Baemmart at PRAJNA describes Universal Yoga as a system rather than a style, due to this continuity of practice. Many schools incorporate some mind-body elements. As teacher Ingrid Schaller says, “Our physical body can be an avenue for self-awareness.”
SKY YOGA, EAU CLAIRE
STR ETC H, S TRENGTHEN, OR DE- STRES S ? Some classes will focus much more on gently holding poses for longer periods of time, in order to deeply stretch muscle and connective tissue. “Yin Yoga” is usually this kind of class, although one thing I also discovered during the course of these interviews is that the same name will often apply to different kinds of yoga, so you need to check with the teacher to make sure. While yoga is often associated with stretches, many poses are designed to selectively strengthen muscle groups, or provide core strength in general. Some classes emphasize these, and many classes provide a balance. Meanwhile, some styles focus more on eliminating stress and nourishing the body. “Restorative yoga” is one such style, and is often ideal for those who are overworked and exhausted or for those who want to balance a high-intensity workout routine. “Yoga Nidra,” according to instructor Misty Ross, leaves you feeling “calm, peaceful, and deeply relaxed.” Alignment Yoga, taught at the Yoga Center of Eau Claire, includes several “pre-yoga” techniques designed to induce calm and develop awareness. Many of the stress-relieving styles out there are good for beginners to start with.
TR ADITION OR VARIATION?
Some teachers will describe a specific tradition that they teach within, like Hatha, Iyengar, or Ashtanga. I found that many Chippewa Valley teachers do not do this; rather, they emphasize adapting to the needs and wants of students, and creating new variations.
TO FLOW O R NOT TO FL OW?
Some styles of yoga have you holding still in various poses, while others emphasize flowing from pose to pose. Terms like “Vinyasa,” “flow,” and “Vinyasa flow” are often used, and are generally synonymous. One thing to be aware of is that flowing yoga is usually more advanced, and requires some understanding of the poses, to avoid improper practice or injury. This isn’t always the case, so check with the teacher to learn more. (By this point, you’re probably realizing that almost nothing is “always the case” when it comes to yoga!)
HOT OR N OT ? “Heated,” or “hot yoga” is a relatively recent development in the Valley, although it has existed for decades in some places, sometimes with the brand name Bikram Yoga. Studios now often use infrared heat to warm up the room, creating a dry heat. Teacher Anthony McMorran describes it as being invigorating, like “you just had a cup of coffee on a warm beach.”
W OULD YOU L IKE ACROBATICS WITH THAT? Experimentation has produced many variations on the basic yoga theme. You’ll find classes done by candlelight, classes set to music, and classes in unique settings (at Down to Earth Greenhouse, or Simply Dunn pottery in Downsville, for instance). Some teachers blend yoga with Pilates, dance, or in the case of local teacher Michelle Anthony, with acrobatics!
W H AT AR E Y O U R P R I VACY NEED S ?
Some people aren’t quite ready to show up to a well-lit classroom in their spandex finery. Fortunately, there are many privacy levels. Many teachers will teach solo lessons, which afford you privacy as well as individualized instruction. Additionally, some classes are taught in low-light environments to encourage focusing on yourself rather than comparing your performance to others. Generally, yoga strongly favors self-development over competition, and most teachers try to foster an inward focus in their classes.
L I VI NG L A VI D A Y O GA?
Yoga itself is apiece with Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient system that includes advice on diet and lifestyle. Yoga teacher and Ayurvedic consultant Tracy Chipman describes it as a “sister science of yoga” which restores balance to your life. Individual consultations and group classes are available in the area.
Y O GA F O R S P E CI F I C P O P U L AT I O NS .
Most classes are for the general public, albeit at varying degrees of difficulty, but some are more specialized. Classes for men have come into being to answer the specific needs of male bodies. Let’s face it: A lot of us middle-aged guys have a little trouble tying ourselves into the knots that advanced yogis can get into, and some of us have injuries from sports and so on. Likewise, “prenatal yoga” is designed for the needs of pregnant bodies: It includes pelvic floor strengthening and relaxation, as well as help with nausea, back pain, and sleep problems, according to prenatal yoga instructor Katie McMorran, who also emphasizes the social benefits of being in a supportive group of women. Donna Wagner Backus at The Yoga Center of Eau VolumeOne.org 39 Jan. 10, 2018
Claire teaches classes for strong bones and for “older women who are insecure about their ability to move their bodies.” The Valley has classes for Parkinson’s and fibromyalgia, people with large bodies, runners, and other populations.
HOW MUCH EDUCATION SHOULD A TEACHER HAVE? You might not realize that teaching yoga is an unregulated profession. This means that anyone, with any level of yoga experience or teacher training, can consider themselves a yoga teacher. There are certifications, however, which many teachers will display on their websites. “RYT” means “registered yoga teacher,” and it means that someone has graduated from a school registered with the Yoga Alliance. You’ll see a number after RYT, like “200,” which gives the number of teacher training hours that the teacher has gone through.
D O Y O U C O N N E C T W I T H Y O U R T E A C H ER ? An oft-repeated concept from local teachers is that your “resonance” with your teacher is more important than the style of class. Indeed, many teachers teach more than one style, and students will often take more than one type of yoga from the same teacher. Whatever the type, pick a teacher that you can relate to and learn from. Basically, this will take a little shopping around before you can tell who will work best for you. In the end, after all of these styles, specialties, and schools, you just have to try a class for yourself! Chris Hayden practices bodywork and movement therapy at Tuning Tree Healing Services in Eau Claire, and provides mental health recovery services through Milkweed Connections.
