olks have been taking full advantage of the sunshine splaying across the Valley so far this June – rightfully so – but don’t let that sunshine get to you.

“Summer in the Midwest is a wonderful time to be outdoors hiking, gardening, camping, and swimming,” Fibeger said. “Of course, these fun activities increase our risk of exposure to sunlight, insects, and poisonous plants.” Most people know to slather on sunblock before spending a day out on the lake or in the park, but if you’re swimming or even just sweating in the summertime heat, you should be reapplying. “Everyone should wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above sunscreen,” Fibeger said. “Make sure to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.” While you can definitely find water-resistant sunblock, Fibeger pointed out that “waterproof” sunscreen is nothin’ but a fib. “There is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen,” Fibeger said. “Water-resistant sunscreen will indicate on the bottle [to reapply every] 40 or 80 minutes.” For child and adult sunblock (yes, there is a difference), sprays are convenient and easy to apply for all but need to be rubbed in thoroughly. Children’s sunscreen usually has ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which tend to be less likely to irritate the skin, Fibeger said. For kiddos under the age of six months, however, it is recommended to keep them in the shade as much as possible and wear sun-protective clothing. In addition, sun-protective clothing with ultraviolet protection factors (UPF) can be worn to protect your skin during water-specific activities, too. Our beautiful neck of the Midwest is chock-full of abundant greenery and wildlife to explore and enjoy, but as Fibeger said, it’s important to note more than just sun safety when out and about. Brushing up against poison ivy and oak or even sumac can cause an intense, itchy eruption across the skin. (Ouch!) “The best way to avoid this is to know what these plants look like and wear long clothing when hiking or working in the woods,” Fibeger said. Just because you may be in the water doesn’t mean you’re free from skin irritants, either. Swimmer’s itch occurs when splashin’ around infested lakes: Parasites nestle into the skin and creating itchy red bumps. (Again, ouch.) Fibeger recommends avoiding bodies of water with any “warning” signs and showering ASAP after swimming. As far as specific product recommendations, Fibeger says “the best sunscreen is the one you are willing to use and reapply frequently.” Stay skin-safe out there, folks!

THROUGH THE UPS AND DOWNS Chippewa Falls teen aims to break world record for chin-ups WO R DS :

s of right now, the most chin-ups completed in 24 hours is 5,340 by Idai Makaya in the United Kingdom, but Chippewa Falls’ own Calvin Betters is hoping to change that. Betters’ decision to break this record came from uncertainty in his future after high school. He wanted a big goal to strive for and thought that this sounded the coolest. At first, he wanted to complete the most push-ups in 24 hours but said he was already pretty adapted to push-ups and wanted to challenge himself, which caused the switch to chinups. When he started training two years ago, the training began to consume most of his time; he would even train for six hours a day, six or seven days a week. After a slight hiccup in his training, he took a break and came back to his training trying not to overdo it. Currently, Betters is training three times a week, and working on his chin-ups once a week. He’ll complete anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 chin-ups in a day. His plan for the big day in question is to com-

plete five chin-ups every minute for an hour straight, which is about 300 chin-ups every hour. After each hour, he plans to take a five-minute break as well as six 10-minute breaks, three 15-minute breaks, and two 20-minute breaks which will equal about 18 breaks in total. If his plan runs smoothly, he should have three extra hours during the day for eating and sleeping. Betters is also in the process of raising one dollar for each chin-up he plans to complete through United Way to help the community. Specifically, the funds will help Hope Village, which builds tiny homes, as well as to help those with medical needs as well as people with mental health issues. The date of his attempt has been pushed back a couple of weeks and he doesn’t have an exact date quite yet. Getting everything together with the volunteers to help count his progress and getting representatives to witness has been a challenge, but Betters isn’t one to back down. To donate to Calvin’s fundraiser, go to 4giving. com and search for “Calvin Betters.”

PAY THE FARMER NOW OR THE DOCTOR LATER Six simple tips for eating better in the summertime WOR DS:

JA NESSA

VA N D E N B E R G E

ealthy eating and getting active doesn’t need to be complicated. Stick with a few simple and sustainable changes that most health professionals agree will promote a long, happy, and healthy life.

drinks, juice drinks, energy drinks, or soda are a major source of added sugars. Cut calories by drinking water or unsweetened beverages like unsweetened tea. Try adding fresh fruit to your ice-cold water or even sparkling water.

MAKE HALF OF YOUR PLATE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. Choose a variety of colorful fresh, frozen, canned, or dried fruits and vegetables. Pack it as a snack for long car rides or even at work. Check what’s in season to help save money.

COOK AT HOME. Many processed foods contain high amounts of sodium, often hidden in breads and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats, sandwiches, pizza, soup, and chicken.

BALANCE THE OTHER HALF OF YOUR PLATE WITH WHOLE GRAINS AND LEAN PROTEIN. Make at least half of your grains whole grains by adding brown rice to your stir-fry dishes. Go lean with your protein such as fish, skinless chicken breast, or beans. ADD A SERVING OF LOW-FAT WISCONSIN DAIRY TO YOUR MEAL. Enjoy a yogurt parfait for breakfast. Add cheese to your sandwich or make a smoothie with low-fat milk. Make or order your next coffee, latte, or cappuccino with low-fat milk. SIP HEALTHY DRINKS. Sweet coffee

ENJOY YOUR FOOD, BUT EAT LESS. Avoid oversized portions by reading and following the serving size on the food label. Eating food off a plate instead straight out of the box or bag will also help limit your portions. By making small changes in your diet and your activity level, you can lower your risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Take control of your health today! It’s up to you: Pay the farmer now or the doctor later. Janessa VandenBerge, MPH, CHES, is a community health educator with the Eau Claire City-County Health Department.
