A GRINCH’S LAMENT The holidays can be stressful and overwhelming. Here’s how to fight your inner Christmas villain BY LAUREN FISHER
I
t can be easy to be a Grinch this time of year. The holidays have something for everyone to dislike: traveling, cold weather, searching desperately for the perfect gifts, family pressure, premature caroling, and waiting in line for small eternities behind parents with carts stuffed with toys just to purchase a dozen eggs and a pair of headphones. Even those things we cling to that do bring us holiday joy can become a cause of discord. I can’t recall how many times my husband has groaned and whined while I perused the many styles and patterns of gift wrap, squeaking merrily at the glitter and square footage. And it would be difficult to count the sighs I have sighed while making his family’s traditional Christmas cookies, even though they make him so happy. Even before Halloween rolled around this year, I found myself on the phone with an old friend ranting about Christmas and its stresses. I was probably turning green, heart shrinking three sizes as I uttered the dreadful phrase: “I just hate Christmas.” “People who say they hate Christmas are wrong,” my friend informed me without skipping a beat. There was no malice in his voice, although there was a certainty that scalded just as though he had reprehended me. The overarching theme of most holiday celebrations and traditions, including Christmas, is rebirth. The
CREATIVE COMMONS
season follows the harvest, and coincides with the winter solstice, after which the days begin to grow longer once again and we move toward spring. Pagans celebrate this return. Christians celebrate the birth of the Savior. Ancient Romans celebrated Saturn, who represented personal limitations and growth through rebirth. My friend explained that the holidays, in whatever form they manifest, are a time to let go of old stresses and preconceptions and try to move forward into the new year with an eye toward growth and renewal. We Scrooges have got to refocus our efforts from resisVOLUME ONE 2017

tance to acceptance and improvement. How can we add to our friends’ and families’ jovial efforts and inaugurate new traditions? What gears can we grease to ensure social harmony? For one thing, we can refrain from frowning when we begin to see tinsel and inflatable Santa yard decorations. We can focus on the beauty of winter’s descent, the smell of homemade cookies, and the sweet friction of diminished chord progressions. We can channel Saturn to give new birth to our miserly spirits, and learn to derive joy from the joy our loved ones naturally glean from the holiday season.

PINEHURST HILL
KELSEY SMITH
SLEDDING HILLS
Nothing brings a family together like cramming together on a little plastic sled to shoot down a hill. Drainage Ditch Run Menomonie • It’s a crazy drain-
age ditch on the southeastern side of Lake Menomonie that leads out onto the lake. It might be a lot of fun, but definitely watch out for the black ice.
Dunn County Snow Park 620 17th St SE, Menomonie
• On the east side of the fairgrounds, there’s a hill that the water tower sits on, ominously looming over the site. Volunteers have recently spend a lot of time clearing brush, stumps, and debris from the hill, then setting up erosion precautions to create a low maintenance yet fun place for local snow goers. Like any hill, it’s still “ride at your own risk.”
The Flats Hill Eau Claire • Look to the left going
down Pumphouse Road hill, descending from the East Hill of Chippewa Falls, and you’ll find winter bliss just waiting. A sledding hill for all ages and skill levels, this place is wide open, with little to no risk of hitting any trees. Be careful of your speed, though, because legends of the hill have been known to clear the train tracks with one epic run.
Forrest Hill aka “Seven Bumps” aka “Dead Man’s Hill” Eau Claire • Right next to the Forrest Hill Cemetery (on Huebsch Boulevard) on the East Side Hill, the slope is small and gentle with no major obstacles. (Just the thing for weak-hearted novices.) In recent years, its easy accessibility has made it a favorite among area snowboarders, but don’t be intimidated by them. If there is an altercation over a collision, they will have a hard time chasing you with their feet strapped to those boards.
Mount Simon 100 Addison Ave., Eau Claire • 49-acre
park located on Dell’s Pond with access off either Madison Street or Birch Street. This park offers a boat
landing and dock, 2 picnic pavilions, 2 lighted sand volleyball courts, and an 9-hole disc golf course. Mt. Simon Park is also home to Eau Claire’s Babe Ruth Baseball program.
Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds Back Entrance 225 Edward St., Chippewa Falls • The
walk-in entrance to the grounds across from Irvine Park provides a perfect pat to safely walk to the top of a rather steep hill. Low person-on-tree collision rates have kept local kids sliding there for years.
Oakwood Hills Eau Claire • There’s a great little (unsu-
pervised) hill near the Oakwood Hills Warming House on Golf Road. The hill is open Sat. and Sun. 1-6pm, and could be a pleasant alternative to some of the aforementioned and slightly more treacherous places.
Pinehurst Hill • On Eau Claire’s north side, the
behemoth Pinehurst Hill stands as the mother of all sledding hills. This formidable giant was a downhill ski run with a towrope throughout the early 70s. Be careful: if you don’t brake or turn, you’ll end up in a parking lot. Try not to hit anyone climbing up the hill, and pay attention so you don’t get hit yourself.
UWEC Campus Hill Eau Claire • Feeling adventur-
ous, or perhaps like getting flat-out arrested? It has long been rumored that the most exciting hill in Eau Claire is also one of the most rare. With the perfect conditions, “The Hill” shooting down from upper campus gets covered with freezing rain then snow and becomes completely impassible. Mach 2 is potentially capable, but make sure to dodge the gate at the bottom... and the cops.
X-Hill Eau Claire • Just across the road from Chippe-
wa Valley Airport’s runways, it’s a real treat when jets fly overhead, close enough that you can feel your chest rattle. A crisscross hill unofficially called the “X-Hill,” you can start at one of two steep, twin trajectories that cross each other at a wicked intersection before going off in any number of directions. This is never the same ride twice and the risk for some intense crashes is high. So if you are on the hill, consider yourself forewarned and, therefore, fair game.

REJECTION LETTERS FROM SANTA
colorful correspondence between area folks and the big, bearded guy
Dear Mr. Claus, Ow! Jeez, that hurts! We had everything figured out – we wear the right kind of guards for our soccer games, and we try to be REALLY CAREFUL on the playground. But now, thanks to the new Pinehurst sledding hill, we’re once again on alert. Have you ever been hit by a thirdgrader doing 30 mph on one of those plastic saucers? It’s brutal. So, we need ice! And aspirin! Thanks Santa! Love,
Dear Santa Claus, So, the new lighting on the Phoenix Park footbridge looks nice. You bet. Real pretty. But you know what? Nobody bothered to think about how that would make all the other pedestrian structures feel, and quite frankly… It hurts. I’m not going to lie. For Christmas, I’d like some fancy lights, too. Maybe something that makes it look like people are underwater. Or maybe those laser-y ones that look like Christmas trees or smiley faces or whatever. Those are a hoot! Thanks Santa,
– T H E S H I N S OF ARE A KIDS
–THE PEDESTRIAN UNDERPASS AT THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 312 AND MCKINLEY ROAD
Dear Shins, That sounds like it smarts. Have you tried jumping right before you get nailed? That reminds me of a story. So, Dancer stole Comet’s salt lick, and they’re chasing each other all over the place. Mrs. Claus hates when they roughhouse, so she tries to break it up and Comet trips over her, falls, and nails me in the shin with his antlers. It was excruciating. So, anyway, I know what you’re going through. I’ll bring you ice; we‘ve got plenty of that.
Dear PUATIOH312AMR, Oh dear. There’s something I need to explain. Come have seat here on Santa’s lap. You see, civic investment, whether on behalf of local government or private interests, needs to take into account the number of residents affected. And how many people traversed under the North Crossing at McKinley this year? Four? I’ll bring you a couple of strings of those rope lights that used to hang above the pool table in the elf den. They mostly still work.

Santa, So I hear you’re bringing lights to the McKinley Road underpass? What the hell? There are other pedestrian walkways that would appreciate some artistic illumination. You better not forget about me, if you know what’s good for you. Don’t leave me hanging,
Dear Dr. Claus, Lately I’ve been having some odd symptoms. The white part of my eye is pink, and it itches a ton. When I wake up my eye is crusted shut. I haven’t been around anyone with similar symptoms. This has been going on since this past summer. Sincerely,

–ITCHY AND CRUSTY IN EAU CLAIRE
Dear SSBTOKB, Eau Claire’s pretty safe, but maybe you should just keep your distance. I’m not going to tell you what I’ve got under the ol’ red suit, but let’s just say you don’t want to mess with me, all right? If I bring you a couple of tiki torches maybe you can step back a little? OK?
Dear Itchy and Crusty, You know who this is, right? I deliver toys to kids on Christmas. I’m not actually a licensed medical doctor, but I’m going to take a stab at this. I bet you went tubing down the Chippewa River this summer. You’ve got pink eye from when the barge broke that sewage pipe and no one noticed. There are drops that can help. This reminds me: I’ve got a few drums of used elf grease I need to get rid of (if you don’t keep them greased, they squeak and seize up like crazy). Maybe I can “accidentally” pour them down the river and no one will notice?
Santa
Dear Dr. Claus, We just need ONE MORE hospital. We’ve got this thing on our elbow, and our throat has been a little weird. A fourth opinion could really help. Thanks.

Dear Medical Head Cases, I’m not a doctor! Is my name on some website? What gives? In regards to your letter, good grief. Three hospitals is plenty. Here’s your fourth opinion: Instead of bugging area health professionals, try eating a vegetable every once in a while. Or take a walk. Honestly. Merry Christmas,
Dear Father Christmas, I am contacting you on behalf of our entire organization. Our monthly meetings used to be magical soirees full of spreadable meat. The effervescent joy found in the right balance of pickle. The sublime satisfaction of the perfect ham viscosity. But now our gatherings are sad affairs where our advanced palates are left unfulfilled because of the area’s limited grocery store options, many of which don’t even have delis. Please, bring us some relief. Respectfully,

THE CHRISTMAS CARROT
what happens when an 8-year-old creates the not-so-perfect gift for mom WORDS BY RON DAVIS / ILLUSTRATION BY JANAE BREUNIG
E
veryone has probably gone through the do-it-yourself Christmas present routine at some time in their life. I went through mine when I was only 8 years old. Weeks before Christmas, I had caught a glimpse of a great gift idea in Boy’s Life that I thought would be perfect for my mom. It was a little pencil holder to be hung near a calendar or wherever pencils were frequently needed. It looked like a carrot that had been hollowed out from the top to accommodate a pencil, and it had strings attached for hanging it up. Not being any more of stickler for details than I am now, I didn’t bother to read the directions which pointed out that the gift was to be fashioned out of wood and painted orange, not fashioned out of a real carrot as I, in my abundant 8-year-old wisdom, had guessed. Anyway, I first found the perfect carrot in the fridge and painstakingly began drilling out the center. This is not an easy task for 8-year-old hands, and I had to go through a number of carrots to get just the right effect. (I was careful to eat my mistakes so as to avoid revealing my secret idea.) Orange fingers and all, I went on to the next step of boring two small holes near the top with a toothpick for the string. Unfortunately, at that moment all the string in the house was tied up in a swinging foot bridge for my army men, so I substituted a broken rubber band. Not exactly up to Boy’s Life standards, I admit. To disguise the true nature of my mother’s pencil holder, I wrapped it in an old shoe box. Then, after wadding on a few yards of wrapping paper and Scotch tape, I was positively beaming with the knowledge that all my shopping was done for the family, with more than three weeks to spare. In the days leading up to Christmas I could hardly contain my excitement when my parents and brothers and sisters would open their gifts from me. I took particular delight in my mom’s puzzlement when she shook her present, even urging my dad to take a turn. That poor carrot. After what seemed like centuries,
Christmas morning finally arrived. As usual, before dawn I was already nervously perched at the top of the stairs, waiting for the rest of the family to get up, so we could all tromp downstairs as a group. Reaching the bottom of the stairs, I could immediately see Santa had come in the night and had set up a new electric road race set. I also got my “Fort Apache” that year I think. It included painted tin walls that slotted together and hundreds of Indians, calvarymen, cowboys, and cowgirls, all frozen in poses from their wild – and apparently very violent – lives. After dumping out stockings full of candy, pencils, tablets, and other goodies, we advanced to the living room where we kept the tree and the rest of the presents. Even in the midst of tearing open all the treasures I was

receiving, I kept an ear cocked for the signs of appreciation for the gifts of my arduous labor. My sister, who received a ring toss game, was, well, polite; my dad’s obligatory “Did you really make this yourself, Ron?” in reaction to a flour and water ashtray was sufficiently reassuring, and the present pile wound down to just a few, including the fateful carrot. By this time things had quieted down so the whole family could observe each box. As my mother opened the lid, she paused with a quizzical expression. Was this another of the prank gifts my family gave from time to time? “Ron...?” “How do you like it?” No one could yet see what had once been a carrot. “Well ...” Sensing a possible catastrophe at my expense, my family
hovered in. “What is that?” asked my sister. Moving to look in myself I said, “It’s a carrot pencil holder, you know, to go by a calendar or something.” Then I saw it. Instead of a carrot in the box, there was this thing. I remember thinking some tiny animal had crawled into the package, eaten the carrot and then died itself, but it actually looked more like something that might have come out of an animal. Suddenly the full impact of my colossal screw-up was upon me. Even the rubber band was indistinguishable. “I guess it got rotten.” I looked up into the faces of my family; they seemed to struggle momentarily to control themselves and then gave in, to burst into laughter. Kleenex was coming out, glasses were coming off, my brother was holding his sides and bending over, unable to even speak. Even my mother, who was one of those people who lose their breath when they get hysterical, was starting to make little high-pitched wheezing noises. I didn’t know where to look. Thoughts of Fort Apaches and road race sets had been dashed from my head, and the tears finally came. My brother and sisters, however, were already scanning the remaining gifts for To/From tags with my name, making comments like, “I wonder if anyone else is getting a vegetable this year?” Mercifully, soon my mom came in with the traditional crescent coffee cake, and I was able to retreat into the bittersweet isolation my new toys provided. Starting that day, the carrot story became a family favorite, but the following Christmas some strange things happened. Early in December, my oldest sister offered to take me shopping, when she normally acted as if she would die of embarrassment to be seen with me. My dad secretly advanced me a few weeks of my allowance, and my mom sat down with me one snowy afternoon to make a list of presents. Was this the same family who had delighted in my utter humiliation the year before? I was learning something. The carrot fiasco was not the end of the world. My family really did care. Finding this out was probably the best Christmas present I ever received – even better than a carrot pencil holder.
