A VERY D.I.Y. CHRISTMAS FROM DECORATING TO CELEBRATING, EAU CLAIRE BLOGGER RENEE SREENIVASAM HAS A SLEIGH FULL OF IDEAS TO MAKE YOUR SEASON BRIGHT. WORDS & PHOTOS: RENEE SREENIVASAM of RENEELOVESDIY.COM
T
he holiday season is upon us, and it’s time to start prepping for holiday parties! Whether your gettogether is for a few friends, an extended family, or a slew of employees, here are a few helpful tips for you to create an amazing party, Chippewa Valley style! From the moment my guests arrive, I want them to feel welcome!
Before I even have a chance to usher them into my front door, I greet my guests with beautiful decorations outside my home. The decorations may be as simple as a lit lantern or as elaborate as thousands of shimmering lights. The most difficult part of decorating for the holidays is limiting yourself to just a few of your favorite decorating options.
TO CREATE THIS BEAUTIFUL LOOK, SIMPLY WRAP A SINGLE COLOR OF LED LIGHTS AROUND A METAL GARDEN SPHERE. This effect is especially nice when it contrasts with white lights in the rest of your holiday lighting. (The small ball has 210 lights and the large balls have 300 lights). Wind will move the balls, so anchor them. I use a tent anchor, but anchors for landscape edging would work well, too. Where can you find garden spheres? I would check gift stores and garden centers. Recently, I spotted them at May’s Floral Garden (maysfloral.net)
PORCH POTS
DO YOU PREFER TO DO YOUR OWN DECORATING? Create beautiful porch pots and centerpieces using bundles of greens, berries, and other embellishments available at garden and floral centers such as May’s Floral, Lowes Creek Tree Farm, Down to Earth, The Potting Shed, Avalon, and Brent Douglas. If you are one who wants to create your own porch pot, but you are not sure how, don’t worry: Classes are available at May’s Floral, Down to Earth, and The Potting Shed. If their times don’t work for you, get a group together and schedule a class of your own. Try local florists and garden centers to see if they can accommodate you and your friends.
LIGHTS
VolumeOne.org 34 Nov. 27, 2014
COLORED BALLS
LIGHTS ARE ESSENTIAL, BUT THERE ARE SO MANY CHOICES: traditional lights or LEDs, white lights or multi-colored lights … and if I go with white lights, do I use warm white lights or cool white lights? My advice for you is to pick whatever you like! If it pleases you, then that is all that really matters. No one will be pulling up to your house this holiday season as often as you will! If you love the look of lights, but don’t want to put them up yourself, there are local companies such as Green Oasis Lighting (greenergrasssystems.com) that will do it for you. They take care of it all: design, installation, maintenance, removal, and storage. How easy is that? For those seasoned light installers, I have a couple of fun ideas for you to add to your lighting landscape. Here is an easy suggestion: If you are hanging colored lights this year, whether it is outside or inside, step outside the box and mix up your bulb types. Shimmering light emitted from different sized bulbs creates a stunning look and one that is so easy to achieve! The key to creating this look is to make your two types of lights as different as possible while keeping the colors the same. I used mini multi-colored LED lights and large, solid multi-colored LED lights. There is one more benefit to this mixed-up light look: The large solid-colored bulbs are clearly visible in the daylight hours, giving a nice look to your tree 24/7!
NOTHING SAYS CHRISTMAS IN THE CHIPPEWA VALLEY QUITE LIKE EVERGREEN TREES AND BOUGHS. After all, it was the huge stands of pines that brought lumberjacks and settlers here in the first place. If you’re seeking the perfect tree, gorgeous garland, or wreath, look no further than the “Frolicking” section of Volume One’s Holiday Handbook. Inside you will find a large list of local tree farms where you will encounter the fresh evergreen aroma from beautiful trees, wreaths, garland, and porch pots. Many of these tree farms will also custom decorate your favorite garden pot for your home or business! Looking for more custom decorating? Local floral shops, gift shops, and garden centers will create a one-of-a-kind pieces for you or decorate your entire home or business!

OTHER DECORATIONS
YOUR HOLIDAY DECORATIONS DON’T ALL HAVE TO BE GREEN! Create a beautiful centerpiece for your table with a simple bowl or vase filled with Christmas ornament balls! Tie an elegant bow on a lantern and you have a gorgeous decoration for your doorway, fireplace, or table. This beautiful lantern was found at Willow (410 Water St., Eau Claire). The possibilities are endless: Use candles, leftover greens from your porch pot creations, or the branches trimmed off of your Christmas tree. Buy battery-operated lights for decorating your fireplace mantel or for lighting up the centerpiece on your table. VolumeOne.org 35 Nov. 27, 2014

E
TIME FOR A THEME SICK OF BORING OLD HOLIDAY SOIRÉE? MIX IT UP WITH A THEMED XMAS PARTY WORDS: TOM GIFFEY
T
ired of the same-old, same-old for your holiday gathering? When you think about it, all Christmas parties are theme parties – the theme, of course, being Christmas (or, more broadly, all the pine-scented and gingerbread-flavored accoutrements we stick under that particular tree). And, as with any theme, sometimes this one might get a little tired. You may still love Christmas – and the get-togethers with family, friends, and co-workers that go with it – but you want your gatherings to have a little more spice (and we’re not talking about nutmeg here). What you need, then, is a nonholiday-themed holiday party. That’s the approach taken over the past decade by the folks at Five Star Plastics in Eau Claire, who have taken their company Christmas party from “blah” to “aha!” with a series of themed gatherings and special attractions. The upshot, says vice president Steve Piltz, the idea man behind the company get-togethers, is increased attendance – and increased fun. In the beginning, Piltz says, the company’s holiday party was a relatively formal affair, held at a nice venue. Employees came, they ate, and then they left. Attendance was low – which may be good for the party budget, but isn’t good for coworker camaraderie. Piltz decided to make the parties bigger and better: “I took that on and said, ‘How creative can we be with this?’ ” he explains. The answer is “pretty creative.” One year, for example, the Christmas shindig had a Western theme. The venue was decorated with hay bales, fence posts, and wagon wheels, and employees came in their Western garb. The evening’s entertainment was local whip-cracker extraordinaire Adam Winrich, who holds multiple world records and puts on a unique, high-energy show. (FYI, he can crack a bullwhip 257 times in one minute.) “That was awesome,” enthuses Piltz of Winrich’s performance. Several times, the Five Star Plastics Christmas party has had a Las Vegas theme, complete with play-money gambling tables (courtesy of DJ and entertainment business Rock n’ Roll to Go Plus). Another year, it was a Clue-style murder mystery. Sometimes the focus has been on outside-the-box entertainment choices, including dueling pianists, magicians, and improv comedians (who last year were paired with a Swinging Seventies theme, featuring Piltz clad in an era-appropriate leisure suit). So how have these parties gone over with employees and their families? The proof is in the (plum) pudding: Over the past 10 years, the company has doubled its number of employees but has quadrupled party attendance. Piltz suggests other businesses looking to jazz up their gatherings should simply find out what their employees and guests would find fun. “You’ve got to figure out what your group is about, and adjust it from there,” he advises. “It’s not about any one person. It’s not about me, what I want to do.”
VolumeOne.org 38 Nov. 27, 2014
OTHER IDEAS Nothing says “Christmas” like eight tiny reindeer – or even just one or two of them. A couple of local farms will rent out the antlered Arctic beasts for your soiree, including Fantasy Corral in Woodville (715-698-3079) and Noel Productions (715-533-4468), which can bring reindeer magic to private or corporate parties, community events, or schools. (Take note that these animals are in high demand this time of year, so it’s best to book them early.) Christmastime is the season of lights. Instead of cruising the streets to enjoy them with only the passengers in your Subaru, why not rent a limo or party bus and bring the whole gang on a light-sighting adventure? A chauffeured nighttime drive with a hot toddy in your hand makes for a party few will soon forget. Want to record your guests’ ugly sweaters and goofy hats for posterity? Don’t rely on your co-worker’s iPhone. Instead, rent a traveling photo booth. (See the listings in this section for contact details.) The Chippewa Valley’s improv comedy scene has exploded in the last few years, offering up a variety of groups that will come and riff on whatever theme you have to your party. Broken copy machines? Drunk uncles? Curmudgeonly teachers? Whatever the occasion, improv can lighten the mood. There’s nothing like a little Mediterranean flavor to spice up your holiday party, right? Local belly dancing groups may seem out-of-season, but the flavor they bring can warm up the room. Eau Claire Jazz Inc. books local professional and student musicians in solos, trios, and plenty of other arrangements to class up your get-together. You can have a jazz group as a main act or off to the side, casting a hip vibe over the whole party.
