local educator uses the building blocks of music and dance to teach Spanish

nita Wahl – or as she is called by her fans, Miss Anita – teaches music and movement alongside the Spanish language to kids ages 1 through 12. A native of Waunakee and a graduate of UW-Madison with a degree in international relations, Wahl has traveled extensively to Uruguay, Denmark, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, and more. Eventually, she settled in the Chippewa Valley to assist with a youth mission group in Chetek. Now, she says, “I love the north woods.” She was initially certified to teach Musikgarten, an approach that melds music and movement. After doing music and movement with the goal of classical ear training, toning, and rhythm, Anita recognized it was a great way for kids to learn Spanish. As a mother of four, a piano teacher for more than 20 years, and the leader of several youth mission trips to Spanish-speaking countries, she had the experience for it. “I’ve always loved learning Spanish and music, both, and when I took my kids to music art and classes, I loved it,” she said. “I loved the experience with your ¡Olé! ew toys have survived through decades and generations like LEGOs. These resilient little plastic blocks have made it over a hundred years through world wars and various economic revolutions (and probably millions of angry outbursts after finding themselves under an unsuspecting foot). But through all of that, LEGOs still reign supreme in the toy aisle and in playrooms around the world. There’s something about LEGOs that goes deeper than just the fun of

Phillips Memorial Public Library offers a monthly LEGO Club where they choose a theme and ask participants to build on that theme. Kids have to work with a single collection to share the pieces they need and create a final product they dream up themselves. The library also has a LEGO speedway event on March 26 where partici-

LEGOs have been shown to have real-world educational benefits, teaching children everything from sorting skills to engineering. Plenty of places around the Chippewa Valley have picked up on this opportunity. Many local libraries and other play areas have begun having LEGO specific programming that encourages kids to get creative using those primary colors. For young children the benefits are seen in simple sorting and counting skills as well as helping with fine motor skills. Kids have to find the color they want, then

pants will build their own LEGO cars and race them down a track, again opening their minds to the creative possibilities of making a fast (and funlooking) car. The Altoona and Fall Creek public libraries also host similar clubs that challenge young builders in various activities, but also allow plenty of time for free play. The Altoona Public Library even partners LEGOs with chess, a game known for its educational value. So while LEGOs might still be one of the most fun toys on the block, they also carry some weight for the future. VolumeOne.org 25 Feb. 28, 2013

Tiny Hiney Tiny Hiney is written by Eva Paulus, the six-and-a-half-year-old daughter of Volume One columnist Mike Paulus (who writes The Rear End). For this installment, Eva agreed to be interviewed about her story writing process. How do you write a story?

How do you come up with a title?

You have to think of a little tiny idea, and then write it down. And then the idea grows and grows until you make a story. ... I’m not ready for writing chapter books yet unless the chapters are only, like, three pages long.

Well, you have to sort of group all of the things in the book together to come up with a great title. Well, sometimes I do the title first.

Do you think of the whole story before you write it? I think of it as I write. Like the fairy one [Eva and the Fairy] ... I just had the idea of a fairy that I met in the garden, with goblins, and then I had the idea that the wand turns the grass and everything pink.

Do you go back and change things? I just like it how it is.

Why are illustrations good to have? Well, they show what the words are, in case you’re wondering ... what ... someone squishing their brain out looks like. For example.

At the end, do you always write “The End?” Well, sometimes. But it’s not necessary, because I could do “and they all lived happily ever after.” But that would be too hard to fit on a page, so I just like “The End.”

Where do you get your ideas?

Do you need a cover? Of course I do. It’s not like ... “Here is the first page! La la-la la, blah blah blah, type on a computer.” Because there has to be a title on the first page.

Well, I usually sorta ... sometimes I bang on my head. Sometimes I already have an idea and write it down. And sometimes I bonk my head.

FAMILY PLANNING

LOGS WILL ROLL

Childbirth Preparation Class Mar. 2, 10am-4:30pm •

YMCA offers families awesome logrolling class Logrolling Class • Sunday afternoons • Chippewa Valley Family YMCA, 611 Jefferson Ave., Chippewa Falls • 3:40-4:40pm • $3 for members, $6 for nonmembers • 723-2201 • ChippewaYMCA.com • Paul Bunyan, sawmills, and rivers are as much a part of the Chippewa Valley as cheddar is a part of cheese curds. Now, thanks to the Chippewa Valley Family YMCA in Chippewa Falls, area families can reconnect with their inner lumberjacks and lumberjills through a new, weekly logrolling class. Logrolling, or birling, has a simple objective: Stay on the log. People around here have been doing it for more than a century. In 1898, Omaha, Neb., hosted the very first logrolling world championship, and guess who took home the title? That’s right: an Eau Claire native, Tom Fleming. When Chippewa Valley Family YMCA Aquatic and Youth Coordinator Kyle Beach tried logrolling for the first time, he only lasted two seconds. “If you can stay on for three seconds,” chuckled Beach, “you’re the next Olympic logroller in the making.” During Sunday-afternoon classes, which began Feb. 24, families can try this totally local tradition. Although the Chippewa Y once offered logrolling, until recently, the activity had been benched – literally. “We had the official logrolling log, but without the qualified people,” explained Beach, “our log turned into a bench.” Beach said the log sparked many conversations, and this fall logrolling classes once again became possible when a staff member revealed her history as a roller. Families can choose to go to one, some, or all of the classes, which will cover the history of logrolling, how to logroll, and a crazy-fun game called Roleo. Think King-of-the-Mountain except on a log in the water. (This is a game that can be played in something called “Flap Jack Style” – how could that not be fun?). This kid-friendly activity is a great way for families to connect through exercise. “It’s fun. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to spend a Sunday afternoon,” Beach said. “The family’s in the water, laughing, hoisting each other up – this is everybody together.” –Sarah Bodeau
