MENOMONIE: NEW IDEAS IN A C L A S S I C W I SCO N S I N TOW N MANY ARE TEMPTED TO CALL MENOMONIE A “COLL E G E T O W N , ” and while that’s a fair description, it barely scratches the surface of one of the Chippewa Valley’s most beautiful communities. Nestled around gorgeous Lake Menomin, the town generates a storybook vibe, with enough hills and urban trees to make exploring the place a mini adventure. But don’t let Menomonie's small town looks fool you. It’s home to some of the region’s most interesting shops, businesses, and eateries, showing us how the people of Menomonie don’t shy away from new ideas and concepts. And speaking of that college, UW-Stout adds a powerful dose of forward thinking as well, offering some of the state’s most exciting degrees in fields such as industrial design, fashion, environmental science, and game design. That’s on top of the thousands of young people it draws into the city each year. Finally, proving Menomonie is a Wisconsin town through and through, it rests alongside some of the region’s very best trails, waterways, forests, and parks, giving its residents easy access to all kinds of outdoor fun. Oh, and lest we forget, this town also features one for the Midwest’s most celebrated historic theaters. In short, check out Menomonie. You’ll be happy with what what you find. menomonie's weird news thrills

he city of Menomonie caught the eye of an online travel and entertainment magazine recently, and not because of its award-winning university, its picturesque and historic downtown arts center, or the fact its waterpark shares a name with the fictional African home of the Black Panther. No, this western Wisconsin city thrilled the folks at Thrillist because it’s apparently been a vortex of weird news over the years. Under the headline “This Adorable Midwest Town Is Like the Twilight Zone of Weird News,” the June 18 article by Janelle Lassalle recounts a number of odd occurrences that attracted the national media spotlight to Menomonie, including the escape of a circus elephant, the so-called “Smiley Face Bomber,” the theft of Star Wars film reels, and the robbery of the Kraft State Bank. While the fact these events occurred in 2002, 2002, 1999, and 1932, respectively, might blunt the article’s suggestion that Menomonie is “America’s weird news capital,” it’s still nice to get the attention of an online publication with 5.5 million Facebook followers. (The only “weird” stories cited from the past decade is the 2019 arrest of a guy who tried to parachute from a 300-foot transmission tower.) Surprisingly, the article leaves out one of the stranger Menomonie head-

lines of the current millennium: The June 2002 theft of a 400-pound fiberglass moose from town’s Moose Lodge. At the time, that particular bizarre news item caught the attention of the popular Canadian radio news program As It Happens, which subsequently used Menomonie as a geographic reference point for oddball American stories. (Hey, Canadians love their moose!) The Thrillist article notes that British writer (and erstwhile Dunn County resident) Neil Gaiman drew inspiration for his fantasy novel American Gods from the Midwest in general and the Menomonie area in particular, which certainly burnishes Menomonie’s quirky cred. “Menomonie seems prone to the wild and bizarre,” Lassalle writes, “a place whose mix of wholesome and strange comes off as a cross between Eerie, Indiana; Twin Peaks; and Gravity Falls.” She goes on to mention some of Menomonie’s less-quirky (but nonetheless cool) points of interest, including Brewery Nonic and Zymurgy Brewing. “It’s the kind of deeply wholesome town where bake sales, fish fries, and outdoor concerts are the norm,” she writes. “It just so happens that the likelihood of those events being interrupted by some Twilight Zone occurrence are exponentially higher than normal.” You can read the full Thrillist article at thrillist.com/travel/nation/ menomonie-wisconsin-history.

stout craft co.

Formerly Stout Ale House, Stout Craft Co. recently got a total rebrand of the restaurant. With new paint, new TVs, new neon, new trimwork, a new bar, and newly added axe throwing (a first for Menomonie!), this restaurant is sure to be a hit. Featuring craft burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and appetizers; 25 LED TVs and two projection screens; private skybox rooms for small parties; and games like pool, darts, axe throwing, tables, and boards, and the Broadway Bowl located right next door with 20 bowling lanes, Stout Craft Co. has no shortage of options to make your night out one for the books. Along with their slew of craft beers and burgers, general manager Jay Ouellette said a top seller is their Sizzlin’ Cajun Jalapeño Burger: a jalapeño-infused burger with jalapeño bottle caps, onion rings, pico de gallo, pepperjack cheese, and Cajun sauce. Squeaky cheese curds, fried pickles, nachos, pretzel bites, buffalo chicken dips, smothered hot beef sandwiches, reubens, bacon ranch wraps, taco salad, gouda macaroni and cheese, Friday night fish fries, and ice cream cakes are just a few of their mouth-watering options. They also have daily specials available from 4 to 9pm. If you’re playing it safe and not quite ready to dine-in because of the pandemic, Stout Craft Co. even offers online ordering options (see stoutcraftco.com for details).

wilson creek inn

The thought of Wilson Creek Inn, 932 N. Broadway, should bring warm thoughts of old-fashioned Friday fish fries and prime rib Saturdays. The owners, Jim Maguire and Kim Spizale, initially weren’t looking to get into the food industry, but noticed a need for a more upscale dining experience. The two take pride in using cast iron skillets for most dishes to produce a flavorful experience, and thus receive lots of local rave for their ribeye and fillets. The scallops and unique pasta dishes seem to be gaining some traction in popularity as well – not to mention that the woodwork and dining scene are unmatched. Maguire and Spizale wanted to show off the original restaurant’s look, so instead of a complete remodeling, they decided a little rejuvenation was all the club needed. (The building formerly housed Skoog’s Parkside.) On your next night out, be sure to add this unique eatery in your plans. The Wilson Creek Inn is perfect for those nights you’re wanting a formal dining experience but don’t want to stray too far from home. Learn more at wilsoncreekinn.com.

T H E ‘ R E A L’ W A K A N DA —

Wakanda has existed in the imaginations of comic book fans since the 1960s, then sprang into the broader public consciousness worldwide two years ago with the release of the blockbuster superhero film Black Panther. In fiction, Wakada is a secretive, technologically advanced East African kingdom whose king becomes a super hero, the Black Panther, portrayed on screen by Chadwick Boseman. The success of the film and the popularity of the character led fans around the world to search for the “real” Wakanda. Spoiler alert: You won’t find it on any map of Africa. You will, however, find Wakanda thousands of miles away on the shores of Lake Menomin in Menomonie, Wisconsin. In this case, Wakanda Park is scenic spot featuring everything you could hope for: park shelters, playground equipment, baseball diamonds, horseshoe pits, a disc golf course, and a lakeside beach. While you’ll find no vibranium mines or heart-shaped herbs that will give you mystical powers, there’s undoubtedly a good picnic spot or two. Nearby, you’ll also find the Wakanda Water Park and Wakanda Elementary School. So where did the park’s name come from? In the language of the Dakota, one of the Native American peoples who called the Menomonie area home, “Wakanda” is “the omnipresent, invisible life force” – making it a word with spiritual significance. You’ll find similar place names (spelled “Wakonda” or “Wauconda”) in Illinois, Oregon, Washington, South Dakota, and Missouri.

E F F I GY M O U N D S —

While Wakanda Park may not be connected to an ancient, mysterious culture from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is does have a connection to an ancient, mysterious culture in the real world. Wakanda Park is home to some of the only Native American effigy mounds in the northern half of Wisconsin. At the south end of the park you’ll find three conical effigy mounds, which may have been built roughly

WA K A N D A WAT E R PA R K O N " D O G G I E S W I M D AY "

1,000 years ago in what is known as the Late Woodland Period. The park once contained 17 other mounds, but those are now underwater (a dam built in the 1950s raised Lake Menomon’s water level). According to the 2000 book Indian Mounds of Wisconsin, 14 of these mounds were excavated before they were inundated by water, and they were found to contain stone “altars” as well as burials, including “an individual who had been cremated while wearing a clay face covering or mask” – something that’s been documented in only two other places in Wisconsin. These mounds were dated to between the years 1000 and 1400.

A UNIVERSITY NAMED AFTER A PERSON —

Menomonie’s UW-Stout has the distinction of being the only university in the UW System to be named after a person. (The rest – like UW-Eau Claire – have geographic names.) UW-Stout has its unique name for good reason: It traces its roots to James Huff Stout, a lumberman and politician who founded the Stout Manual Training School as a vocational institution in 1891. Later, Stout opened training schools kindergarten teachers, manual train-

ing teachers, domestic science teachers, homemaker’s, and others. These were merged into the Stout Institute in 1908, which was transferred to the state of Wisconsin when Stout died in 1911. Over time, the Institute evolved into today’s UW-Stout. The university is unique for more reasons than just its name: It prides itself as being “Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University” – its the only school designated as such by the UW System Board of Regents – because of its emphasis on applied learning and its career focus. In 2001, UW-Stout became the first higher educational institution in the nation to be awarded the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, which is given to a handful of businesses, nonprofits, and other institutions annually by the U.S. Department of Commerce to honor outstanding organizational performance. UW-Stout, which has an enrollment of about 8,400 students, currently offers 49 undergraduate degrees, 22 graduate degrees, and three advanced degrees. Popular majors include business administration, mechanical engineering, and computer science, and the university is also known for its programs in game design, packaging, and golf enterprise management. Whatever their major, 98.8% of UWStout graduates are either employed or continuing their education within six months of graduate!

410th Street, Menomonie The Devil’s Punchbowl is a surreal geological rarity just outside the city created by glacial movement over 500 million years ago. The bowl itself is made of sandstone where water trickles down to the center. In the summer, it’s a cool shaded place to hang out, and in the winter it becomes so magical, you might not even think you’re in Wisconsin. The falls freeze into a wall of icicles and it’s really something to behold, especially when the light hits it just right. And just down the road, Tripp’s Falls is a ravine with spectacular cliff faces, beautiful trees, and an enclave of multiple gentle waterfalls. Both are accessible right off the Red Cedar bike trail, too. SUBMITTED PHOTO

If you’re looking for a pristine beachscape, or a chill secluded place to camp, nothing beats The Bottoms. Once you make your way along the dirt path toward the water, the beach stretches for about a mile along the Red Cedar River in the shadows of a walking bridge from the Red Cedar Trail. The sand is soft, the water is cool, and half the fun is in finding it. Once you’re there, it’s the ultimate oasis for a sun-soaked getaway right here in the Valley.

The Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area offers 700 acres of preserved and restored wooded hills, wetlands, and prairie landscapes – absolutely perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing. It’s a versatile area, where hikers of all experience levels can enjoy a fulfilling jaunt through the area. Make your way to the 60-foot-tall observation tower – one of the highest points in Dunn County – for a breathtaking view of the surrounding scenery, especially in the fall.

A bit of a hike from Menomonie, but still a very cool place to check out if you haven’t. Crystal Cave was discovered in 1881 by local farm boys, and transformed into a public destination in the mid-20th century. Nowadays, you can do an hour-long tour with expert guides through a maze of well-lit passages among the glistening stalactites and stalagmite 70 feet underground. (The cave is closed for the 2020 season, but plans to reopen in April.)

onstructed with ornate, hand-carved details during the Victorian era, the Mabel Tainter Theater is a historic gem of Menomonie and a must-see tourist attraction. It was built in 1889 as a performing arts and cultural center dedicated to Mabel Tainter, daughter of Capt. Andrew Tainter, a lumber baron and partner of Knapp, Stout, & Co., and his wife, Bertha. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a charter member of the League of Historic American Theatres, and a designated Wisconsin Historical Marker Site, the Mabel Tainter features hand-stenciled walls and ceilings, a marble staircase and floors, stained glass windows, walnut and oak woodwork, and four fireplaces – along with an original pipe organ with 1,597 pipes, according to the theater’s website. While performances are on hold for the time being because of the coronavirus pandemic, you can still enjoy the Mabel Tainter: Tours are currently set for Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 3pm with no reservation required. Face masks are requested, and a $5 donation is highly encouraged. Tours are provided by dedicated and trained docents. More information about this historic site can be found at www.mabeltainter.org.

“I

f you really have a love for the Earth, it shows.” Or at least that’s what Mary Smith, a sixyear-long member of the Menomonie Community Gardens says. Gardening is something that she, along with her husband Charles, find therapeutic – particularly during pandemic times. This year, the pair grew an over 30-pound cabbage that they donated to their church family. The secret to their incredible success, Smith said, is that she layers fertilizer in the soil. In addition to their cabbages, they also grow tomatoes and potatoes. “It keeps us going,” Smith said. The Smiths’ incredible cabbage is just one of many success stories of this year, according to Menomonie Community Gardens President Mary Lotten, who has been a part of the community for eight years. “We’ve had just a lot of success,” Lotten said. Kathy Westaby, who has been a part of the gardens for three years, decided this year was the year to

By the end of its growing season, Westaby estimates her pumpkin will weigh around 500-600 pounds, though the Engels often have pumpkins that reach the 800-1,000 pound range. “It will get out of there somehow,” Westaby laughed. “I might have

a pumpkin smashing party.” All 94 of the garden’s plots were rented out this year – which Lotten suspects has to do with a fear of food shortage due to the pandemic. Nonetheless, each plot has a unique personality relative to its gardener, with unique birdhouses, solar-powered gardening system, and a few “junky” items that give each plot its charm. “If you’re going to be in a pandemic, the garden is the place to be,” Smith said.

hether you’re looking to find something new and exciting to do in your own backyard or planning an itinerary for visiting friends and family, a recent episode of the long-running tourism series Discover Wisconsin has you covered. Menomonie was the focus of the second episode of the current season of Discover Wisconsin, which premiered in January. The episode treated viewers in eight states (and online) to a four-season look at the city of Menomonie. The program’s hosts, Mariah Haberman and Collin Geraghty, lead the audience on a tour of everything from fast summer nights at the Red Cedar Speedway to winter evenings in the historic Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts to spring lambing season at Govin’s Farm.

“This city brings the excitement of a college town and the charm of the northwoods together,” Haberman says during the episode. “It’s fun, it’s eclectic, it’s beautiful, and it’s all year long.” Dustyn Dubuque, executive director of Downtown Menomonie Inc., said the episode emphasizes how much there is to do in Menomonie no matter what the season. For example, the fall segment features the annual Ladies’ Night Out in October, which brings crowds of women – many decked out for Halloween – to visit the unique boutiques that downtown Menomonie offers. (Unfortunately, this annual event won’t be held in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.) The episode begins by showcasing warm-weather activities in Menomonie, including dining outdoors at Jake’s Supper Club, the annual Lake Menomin Wa-

It’s got an extensive beach full of rocks and chilly water to cool you down in the heat.

The cave is accessed by a series of steps and ramps that allow you to descend 70 feet underground where your journey follows well-lit, graveled trails. The cave temperature hovers near 50 degrees, so a sweatshirt is recommended. See contact info for admission costs.

D O W N TO W N M E N O M O N I E RELIEF GRANTS AID BUSINESSES DURING COVID

BREWERY WINS AWARD FOR REMODELING Since opening in 2018, Menomonie’s Zymurgy Brewing Co. has attracted tastebuds with a creative lineup of beers ranging from English ales to Russian imperial stouts. Now, it has also attracted statewide attention for its creativity remodeled space. This summer, Zymurgy won the Best Adaptive Reuse Project Award from the Wisconsin Main Street Awards, which are given out annually by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. to recognize the state’s best downtown revitalization projects. Zymurgy’s building, 624 Main St. East, is more than a century old and most recently housed an auto body shop. Zymurgy owner and brewer Jon Christiansen said the remodeling entailed replacing greasy concrete, adding coolers, installing brewing equipment in what had been a car wash, insulating the building, adding handicapped-accessible restrooms, and (naturally) building a bar. Most recently, an outdoor patio was completed this summer, allowing patrons to enjoy the latest microbrews in a relaxed outdoor setting. Because of the coronavirus, no Wisconsin Main Street Awards ceremony was held this year, so Zymurgy received its award in person recently from Downtown Menomonie Executive Director Dustyn Dubuque and Board of Directors President Jeff Frawley. –Tom Giffey

The shutdowns and uncertainty caused by the coronavirus hit all businesses hard, including the unique retailers and service providers in Menomonie’s picturesque downtown. This spring, Downtown Menomonie Inc. – a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the downtown business district – sprang into action to create a COVID-19 relief grant program. Using $15,000 in seed money from its own coffers and soliciting donations from other individuals and businesses, Downtown Menomonie Inc. was able to give out 17 grants worth a total of $23,000 in June. The grants, which were as large as $1,500 each, helped small businesses pay rent, keep up with their bills, or meet other expenses caused by the pandemic. Recipients included Acoustic Cafe, Artysta Boutique, Beauje Hair Salon, Bookends on Main, Collective Souls, Donut Sam’s, Fleet Feet, Game Quest Gaming, Heroes Welcome, La dee dah, Leissa’s Hair Studio & Day Spa, Mike’s Art & Design Supply, Mood Boutique, The Raw Deal, Town & Country Antiques, Uptown Curl, and Zymurgy Brewing. FA B FA R M F U N & A N E W C O R N M A Z E AT G O V I N ' S Many Chippewa Valley folks – especially those of us with children – associate Govin’s Farm with the joys of spring. Located just off Interstate 94 between Eau Claire and Menomonie, Govin’s is well known for its lambing barn, where during the spring kiddos can cuddle lambs, piglets, chicks, and other newborn critters. But Govin’s offers opportunities for agriculture-themed entertainment during the fall as well: On weekends starting Sept. 26, visitors can explore an 11-acre corn maze (this year’s theme: “Proud to Farm”), take a wagon rides, play mini golf, pick out pumpkins – or, if they want to SUBMITTED PHOTO pay a few bucks extra, even fire a pumpkin out of a cannon! It’s a great way to enjoy the traditions of a Wisconsin fall while maintaining physical distance from other visitors. Learn more at govinsfarm.com or by finding them on Facebook. –Tom Giffey

M E N O M O N I E C O M M U N I T Y TA B L E S E E S A B I G G E R N E E D TO F E E D Of the three Menomonie Community Tables – the Tuesday Table, the Wednesday Table, and the Thursday Table – each has seen a fluctuation of people joining the group dinners as a result of food insecurity due to the pandemic. For the Wednesday Table, this has meant a big increase in people looking to join the community dinners. Though the community table isn’t necessarily for people who are food insecure – many doctors, families, and single folks looking for some camaraderie come join in as a way to come together and feel less alone – the table has seen higher demand for their now to-go style dinners as a result of the pandemic. In the week of August 3-August 7, they saw over 200 people. “There’s a big need for it,” said Kathy Westaby, a volunteer for the table. “That really is a gift to this town.” Many of the goods are donated from the Menomonie Community Gardens. Last year, when all of the plots weren’t rented out, some gardeners adopted the extra plots in their “No Plot Left Behind” initiative, where they would plant extra vegetables to donate to the local tables. “It’s just like a community of friends,” Westaby said.
