Ode to the Bloody where to find the best tomato-based treats in the Valley written by Taylor Kuether and Thom Fountain

ANDREA PAULSETH

The Bloody Mary is an unusual drink, to say the least. There’s a whole culture and community around the drink; people who love Bloody Marys really love Bloody Marys and are constantly on a hunt for the best one around. Here’s a closer look at the tangy, spicy, citrus-y concoction.

Wisconsinites love their Bloody Marys. The tangy, tomato-y drink – and the subsequent garnish/meal that often comes stuck in it – is the perfect refresher morning, noon, or night and can be found in just about any bar across the state (served with a beer chaser, of course). According to tradition, the Bloody got its start in the 1920s in New York City when bartender Fernand Petiot whipped up a vodka-tomato juice for a customer. The drink proved kind of bland, however, so Petiot began spicing it up with black pepper, cayenne pepper, lemon, and Tabasco sauce. The drink is said to be named after Queen Mary I of England, whose cruel reign over the country had her remembered with the less-than-flattering nickname, Bloody Mary. The customization that Petiot found to spice up the drink became a key to its success. Unlike other standards, Bloody Marys differ greatly between bars, each with their own unique blend of spices and ingredients, some even using unique vodka flavors to give the drink a new twist. There’s the consistency, which ranges from thin and light (try Clancy’s Bar or Ray’s Place) to the fullbodied variety (like Girolamo’s Court ‘n House). They also come in levels of spice, with places like Loopy’s presenting a sweeter option while The Livery serves up zesty Bloodys that are not for the faint at heart. And of course, there’s the garnish. In the state of Wisconsin, you can’t go wrong with anything that goes well with meat and cheese. Most Bloody Marys come with a standard garnish of a pickle and an olive, but then each establishment adds its own twist, such as a lemon wedge at The Firehouse, celery at Grizzlys or even a slice of bacon at Milwaukee Burger Company. The blank canvas that is a Bloody Mary allows a little something for everyone. Because, hey, when you order a drink, who can pass up a little free dinner too?

ODE TO THE BLOODY

Girolamo’s Court ‘n House According to You: Bloody Marys can be a very personal thing. Everyone has his or her own idea as to the perfect amount of tang or the precise consistency that makes a Bloody the best. Last year, we asked the readers of Volume One what their favorite Bloody Mary was in the Chippewa Valley in our Best Of poll. These three establishments came away as the top three places, so we decided to delve into them a little more and dig into these tomato delicacies.

Girolamo’s Court ‘n House offers a fullbodied, spicy Bloody garnished with a pickle and an olive. The drink has a medium consistency, so it won’t fill you up and you can enjoy more than one if you’d like. Court ‘n House Bloodies are ideal for someone looking for a classic, no-frills Bloody Mary – a true, authentic Bloody Mary experience! The drink fits in perfectly with the true Wisconsin atmosphere at the Court ‘n House. Comes with complimentary beer chaser.

Loopy’s Saloon & Grill Loopy’s places very well in the garnish competition. Topped with a pepperjack cheese cube, a mini beef stick, a peperoncini, a pickle, and an olive, this Bloody is both a beverage and a snack. The taste is on the sweeter side,– making this the perfect Bloody for those who shy

away from spice and the perfect drink to come back to after a hard-won or hardlost game of volleyball outside. Comes with complimentary beer chaser.

The Mousetrap Tavern The bartenders at The Mousetrap love to help you customize a Bloody Mary to your ideal standards. Want it spicy? They’ve got you covered. Cucumber vodka? Well, why not? The diversity of the Mousetrap’s bloodies make them a real treat – customizable enough to make them yours, recognizable enough to make them a Mousetrap specialty. We recommend their Bloody Mary with cucumber vodka, lots of spice, and a full beef stick. Truly unique, and truly delicious. Comes with complimentary beer chaser.

Scoring Sports Bars finding the best place to watch the big game written by Thom Fountain

Not every place with a TV is a real sports bar. Where you end up on Super Bowl Sunday or for the rubber game of the World Series has to have the perfect, comfortable game day vibe. Here’s a quick guide to help you find that perfect establishment.

Sound Levels

A bar doesn’t have to have walls full of TVs to be a great place to watch the game, but whatever TV firepower they have has to be positioned in a very precise way for the optimal viewing experience. If there’s a long bar, there should be a TV on each end so everyone has a clear sightline to the screen. If there are tables or benches, get used to cozying up with friends on one side so none of them have to strain their necks.

Now, we’re not stupid. We know that the sound from a bar in Fall Creek isn’t going to affect anything at Lambeau Field or Miller Park. However, we are incredibly superstitious, so you bet we’re going to pretend it does. For example, when the Packers are on offense a sudden hush should fall over everyone. When they’re defending a fourth and goal, however, the place should be exploding. And while whether the announcers are audible on the TV’s is a matter of personal preference, we think everyone’s in agreement that an ideal situation has the hometown guys piping in on the radio.

ANDREA PAULSETH

TV Placement

Camaraderie It’s not a lot of fun being singled out in a bar, especially during a big game. Being the only Cubs fan or the only Vikings fan can’t be easy. Luckily, if you’re a fan of Wisconsin sports you’ll be at home at most establishments in the Chippewa Valley. More than just sharing fandom, though, patrons should share a passion for the game they’re watching. Some of the best parts of going to a bar for the big game are meeting other fans, sharing high fives, and complaining about why the heck that guy can’t hit a free throw.

The Drinks

Milwaukee Burger Company (2620 E. Clairemont Ave.) has plenty of seating, plenty of TVs and plenty of scrumptious burgers and drinks for the next big game. V1’s Night Out 2013

Obviously one of the reasons you end up at a bar for the game (besides the cable TV package) is to drink. Sports bars usually have specials for game day, so ask and save yourself a few bucks. Hold off on the shots too – you might get those free with a touchdown or home run. As for normal fare, pitchers are a must. It’s much easier to send up one person during a timeout than for your whole group to run up and order 10 different drinks.

Pub Puzzles brain teasers when you’re bored at the bar 1 Make this point down by only moving three coins

2

Make four equal-sized boxes (same size as shown) by moving two matches

4 Make the similar coins grouped together by moving opposites together, two at a time. Coins must be slid together and end up touching another coin. This can be done in five moves. 3 Redraw the goal post by moving only two matches and making the “football” miss

6

5

Get the odd coin in the middle. You can touch and slide it, but can only touch the coin next to it (no sliding). Don’t touch the other with your hand or the odd coin.

Make four equilateral triangles without altering any matches (i.e. breaking or bending them) or creating any other shapes (e.g. squares)

SOLUTIONS & STRONG HINTS 1) The coins to move are on the points. 2) The boxes you make are two on top, two on bottom, but don’t share sides – only a few corners. 3) Slide the middle stick left, pick up the upper right post and place it in the lower left. The “glass” should now be upside down. 4) Move two from end A to end B. Then slide the next pair on end A to end B. Then go back to end A, but now there’s two like coins, so you have to leave one and move the pair inside of that coin to end B. Then do the same thing on end B, filling in the gap you left on end A. The final move is to fill the gap on end B with the two coins on end A. 5) Use the coin you can slide to hit the middle one while you touch it, thus making the untouchable one slide over enough for the odd coin to fit in the middle. 6) The triangle is 3D with a triangle base and a “teepee” balancing above it.

Clancy’s has a style all it’s own. Most people that come in are willing to strike up a conversation with anyone. The mixed drinks are served strong and cheap in mason jars. They have a good selection of beers that changes seasonally. The jukebox is pretty much awesome, same with the bartenders.

The Joynt

322 Water St., EC • 835-6959

review by AndyPlank

The Joynt is a second home to many people. It’s a dive-type bar that doesn’t really fit in with the Water St. scene – which is perfect for the artistic and openminded people. There’s a lot of good conversation, the best rotation of bartenders in town, a good jukebox (jazz, indie, reggae, Frank Sinatra) and cheap drinks.”
