5 things you should know about reptile keepers D I S P E LLI N G M Y TH S ABO UT CO LD - B LOO D E D CR IT TE RS AN D TH E P EO P LE WH O LOVE TH E M WORDS & PHOTOS BY HILLARY BE LL 1. WE AREN ’ T C R E E PY G U YS WHO WEAR E Y E L I N E R A N D LIVE IN MOM ’ S B AS E M E N T. (O K , THERE MIGH T B E O N E O R T WO. When I tell someone, “I own snakes and lizards,” I get very confused looks, as if the person doesn’t understand what I’m saying. Yes, to answer your question, I am a woman and I own things that aren’t warm-blooded or that don’t have legs or that have eight legs. Reptile owners don’t have a generalized look to them. It’s anyone really, even your grandma. 2. WE LOVE R E P T I L E S AS M U C H AS WE LOVE C ATS A N D D O G S . Your love for Fluffy the fat cat is just as real and genuine as someone’s love for their 20-foot albino reticulated python named Cuddles. Reptiles are not everyone’s cup of tea, and we are OK with that. No one is going to make you love something you don’t or judge you for it; just like the people who love reptiles aren’t going to judge you for loving the animals you love. We share the same respect for every animal and all personally love different ones, whether they are cats, dogs, birds, etc. All any reptile owner wants is for their love to be respected. Love is like an opinion; everyone has his or her own to give. 3. WE ARE A CO M M U N I T Y. One of the most interesting things to know about reptile keepers is that we are a very large and passionate community. There is absolutely nothing that I’ve
ever experienced that is quite the same as connecting with other reptile keepers. There are shows and events, charity fundraisers, rescues, and even people who dedicate their lives to educating others about our community and our love for our hobby. Once you are a part of that, it’s like you’ve discovered another family. People don’t look at this as just a hobby; it’s their entire

understanding threatens this hobby. You need to know that not all snakes you see are venomous, not everything that’s cold blooded is vicious (unlike your ex), and while everything that has a mouth CAN bite, that doesn’t mean it will. Being educated about these things help with the fears you have. It helps you understand. It helps you love. 5. WE HAVE STRONG BONDS AND AN UNDYING PASSION THAT WE SHARE. Like I said before, we are a community. We learn together, we argue together, and we enjoy things together. In the world of reptile owners there are bonds made over the passion we all share for animals. Great friends are found in this way of life, whether it be at an expo or in the reptile section of a pet store. I’ve gone through high school and now college, and I’ve found there are few people left who personally talk to me. When it comes to my reptile friends, though, we see or talk to each other frequently. We discuss new morphs or species that we find out about. We grab coffee and talk about breeding projects and what we hope to produce next year. We help each other out with information or tips on how to improve something we’re struggling with. Obviously, we aren’t the perfect family; there is no such thing. We can be a dysfunctional, awful mess. But we still all share the same basic ideas, goals, and passion. We rescue. We educate. We grow.

ogs. There’s a reason why we call them man’s best friend. Dogs provide unconditional love and companionship. Sometimes they even enter your life and change you for the better. Here’s the story of how one dog has made a positive difference. Rescued from a cardboard box in New Mexico, she was among nine other Australian cattle dog pups waiting for a home. Her light brown speckled fur caught the eyes of Mike Dillon and his daughter. After scrounging up enough change, they took their newest addition home to meet the rest of the family. Soon, the pup was given the name Rosarita by Dillon’s son, who thought her coat looked like Rosarita refried beans. Now, this 7-year-old cattle dog is known as Harley Rose, and she’s not your typical dog. Typical dogs don’t like loud noises or moving things underneath them, but this red heeler doesn’t seem to mind. From what started as motorcycling through the backroads in Dillon’s hoodie pocket grew into riding in his hoodie. When she outgrew the hoodie, Dillon created a sling so she could ride and put her paws up, nicknaming her a “squat goblin.” It was through riding with Dillon that Rosarita, nicknamed Rosie, became Harley Rose – named after the motorcycles she loved to ride. Harley Rose is famed for her love of riding motorcycles – some could even say she’s an icon. You can spot her riding shotgun with the wind in her face and Mike Dillon behind her. Harley Rose even has her own pair of pink riding goggles that she wears when they’re out and about. She’s been featured in parades, charity runs, numerous YouTube videos (keep your eyes peeled for local landmarks), her own Facebook page, and she even

She has opened up a new world for him.” With the weather cooling down, bikes are being put away. But keep an eye out for Mike Dillon making appearances next spring and summer. You can spot him riding through the Chippewa Valley with Harley Rose, the dog that rides hogs. any organizations throughout the community donate food and money to feed people in need of a helping hand. What many donors don’t realize is that these people frequently have pets, and they are searching for places that provide food for them as well. In order to help the furry members of these families, the Chippewa Valley Cat Club and Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital have teamed up anually to raise donations. Over the past few years of this collaborative effort, the donations have grown. Last year 6,621 pounds of pet food was delivered to St Francis Food Pantry, one of the few places that distributes pet food to the needy locally. This year the drive will run from Nov. 1 through Dec. 15. Boxx Sanitation will be providing the donation containers for those who want to help the cause. Donors are encouraged to drop off any pet food, treats, or cat litter to participating businesses. All donations will be taken to St. Francis to be distributed. There are many generous businesses participating in the drive, including Boxx Sanitation, Chippewa Veterinary Clinic, Eau Claire Animal Hospital, emBARK, Kindness Animal Hospital, Lake Wissota Animal Hospital, Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital, Paws and Claws, Pet Food Plus, Northside Pet Hospital, Riverview Animal Hospital, St. James the Greater Catholic Church, The Ark Animal Hospital, Unity Christ Center, Vets Plus Inc., and Westgate Animal Hospital. Pet Food Plus and HuHot will also be hosting an event at Pet Food Plus on Nov. 4 from 10am to 2pm to help raise money. Guests will be able to purchase up to four bean bags per try at a cost of $1 each to win some great prizes from HuHot’s bean bag toss
game. All proceeds will be used to buy additional pet food to be donated to St. Francis. hen people struggle financially, it can affect their ability to care for their pets. The Dunn County Humane Society (302 Brickyard Road, Menomonie, 715-232-9790) offers programs that assist pet owners in need. The Little Pet Food Pantry was built after DCHS began receiving regular calls asking for help with pet food. The pantry is a small wooden cupboard located outside the shelter, and offers free dry pet food and other small items. It is accessible to anyone, 24/7. Simply take what your pet needs; you don’t need to talk to anyone or sign up. The Little Pet Food Pantry is stocked by donations, so anyone who can help is encouraged to do so. “We’re seeing very steady usage. Community members are donating, but more would be welcome,” says DCHS Executive Director Josh Dalton. Big, bulky bags of dry pet food should be repackaged into smaller, labeled bags. DCHS asks that canned pet food not be left, as the pantry is not temperaturecontrolled. In addition, DCHS has partnered with local veterinarians to offer low-cost spay and neuter services. Having your pet spayed or neutered is critical to helping curb the pet overpopulation crisis. The Feline Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Program helps defray the cost for cat owners. The Bully Breed Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Program is specifically for dogs that are American Staffordshire terrier and pit bull terrier breeds and mixes. If you are a Dunn County resident and would like to see if your pet qualifies for either spay/neuter program, please contact DCHS. Pet owners can attest to the strength of the humananimal bond. It may be a cliché, but it’s true: Pets become a part of our family, and these programs are here to help. –Cassandra Kyser

How tiny chips save lives MICROCHIPPING IS QUICK , EASY, AND INVALUABLE IF FIDO RUNS AWAY WOR D S BY S A R A H H E W I T T • P HOTO BY A N DR E A PAU LS E T H
A
t the Eau Claire County Humane Association, we microchip and register every single cat and dog that gets adopted. We also scan every single stray cat and dog that comes in with a microchip scanner, hoping to find some sort of link to an owner. This whole process has become second nature to all of us here, and it amazes me how little the public knows about microchips: how they work, what they do, and even that you can, in fact, microchip a cat. Considering how few stray cats even have a microchip to find, this should really not be surprising at all. Nonetheless, this information needs to get out there: Microchipping saves lives. Here’s why this is more important than ever. Recently, the state of Wisconsin reduced the legal stray hold from seven days to four. This means that animal groups are required to hold stray animals for four days before evaluating them and deciding if they will be put up for adoption, fostered, or in some cases, humanely euthanized. This also means that owners who previously had seven days to locate their animal in a shelter now have four. That may seem like plenty of time, but it can take animal owners a shocking number of days before coming to a shelter in search of their missing pets. This is where microchips come in. As I stated earlier, we scan every lost animal on its way in the door, usually more than once or by more than one employee to avoid missing a chip. If

electing a pet for your family is a major life decision. And as with any major life decision, it warrants some planning, family discussion, and thoughtfulness. Here’s a quick guide to get you on your way.

breaking, crying at night, vet bills for shots, obedience training – so would an adult dog be better fit than a puppy?
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN SELECTING A DOG:
• Pick a good breeder who is reputable by looking at referrals from a veterinarian, a kennel club in your area, or maybe a trusted friend. Make sure you visit the kennel and look at the conditions: Is it clean? Is the staff knowledgeable? Look at the sire and dam (mom and dad): Are they friendly? If you cannot see the dam, buyers beware! • Do not buy from a puppy mill (someone with many different breeds). Pet stores often buy from puppy mills! No quality breeder will meet you on the highway or halfway. • Resist impulse buying. Instead, have the patience to make a responsible choice. Responsible breeders usually have a waiting list of puppy buyers. They rarely have a sign out front or newspaper advertisements.
• Most important: Make sure if you have children, you pick a breed of dog that is good with kids. Temperament is the most important, so pick a breed of dog that is conducive to your lifestyle. • Are you active, and do you have room for a large dog to run daily? • Do you want a dog that sheds? If not, grooming is expensive and needs to be done every three months – and that can be costly depending on the breed of dog. • Big dogs are harder to walk. • Some dogs drool. • Protective breeds can be aggressive. • Puppies are a lot of work – house-

come looking, no lost pet waiting in a kennel for days, no need to even realize the pet is out: Sometimes we’re the first to know the Rex has dug a hole under the fence, or that Fluffy found a way out the bathroom window. So many stressors and fees are reduced because you took 10 minutes and $25 to microchip your pet just one time. Having said that, a microchip is only as good as the information it carries, so keeping it up to date through moves and new phone numbers is as important as getting it in the first place. There’s nothing more disappointing than finding a chip just to learn that the phone number is disconnected and the address is three states away. We cannot stress this enough: Be sure you have the correct information with your microchip company. If your pet goes missing, call them immediately to let them know and ensure they have a current phone number at the very least. There’s a lot we can do to make our lives easier as pet owners. A one-time microchip is one of the least expensive options, both in terms of financial cost and time investment. There is literally no downside, so do yourself and your pet a favor: Get them chipped and check the info today. Sarah Hewitt is a long-time animal shelter employee, dedicated humane off icer, and lifelong animal advo cate. She wants everyo ne to know that October is National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, and that choosing to adopt is a literal lifesaver.
• Never pick out your puppy until it’s seven weeks of age. They are too young to leave before seven weeks. • Make sure both parents have hip clearances and other necessary clearances for your breed. (Your pre-buying research should help guide you.) • Most breeders have contracts. Look them over. Is the breeder willing to provide you with references and numbers of other people who have purchased puppies from them?
BREED RECOMMENDATIONS: For families, I highly recommend golden retrievers, Labradors, collies, beagles, springers, standard poodles, cocker spaniels, and cavalier King Charles spaniels, just to name a few. The American Kennel club has a great breed book to look at all the different breeds and decide what’s right for you! Karen Rude is the owner of Rude Dog University & K-9 Dorms.
