HOT DOGS AND CATS KEEPING YOUR BEST FRIEND SAFE YEAR ROUND BY HAILEY MELANDER ANDREA PAULSETH

We all love Wisconsin, right? Right? After last winter we may have lost a few Midwesterners to sunnier climes, but most of us have stayed on and are stepping into summer with vigor, and always at our sides for both summer and winter activities are our dogs. They’re happy to catch snowflakes and chase rabbits while we shovel snow – who hasn’t paused from that task, stretched an aching back, and wished they were clever enough to invent a canine-powered snow removal device? We can’t begrudge the dogs their fun, however, because in the summer they’ll always join us for crazy, water- and sweat-soaked adventures, then collapse with broad grins. ¶ Conversely, cats will have their own agendas, and I don’t think we really want to know the details. However, we do love their mad mousing skills that keep our garden sheds free of rodent invasion, and there’s nothing nicer than a purring ball of fur in your lap when it’s 20 below outside. ¶ So, in the interest of our pets’ well being, whether in July or January, a few local vets have shared some common problems and preventative measures that should keep your furry pals kicking up their heels – or snoozing. Whichever they prefer, because it is a dog’s – or cat’s – life, after all.

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke top the list of warm-weather issues, particularly for dogs. “When you reach temps in the high 80s or 90s with high humidity, that’s when we start to see issues,” said Dr. Duane Vollendorf at Westgate Animal Hospital in Eau Claire. Indicators of heat exhaustion include dizziness and constant, heavy panting. Heatstroke is more severe, and can cause loss of consciousness, hemorrhage, and, potentially, death. All dogs are vulnerable to heat exhaustion when they don’t have access to shade or cool water, but athletic dogs – like humans – can be particularly vulnerable, because they don’t realize that they can be overdoing it. “Smooshed-face” dogs, like pugs or bulldogs, are also highly susceptible to heat exhaustion, said Dr. Erin Wise at Eau Claire Animal Hospital. Dogs don’t sweat like humans and must cool themselves by panting,

but short-faced breeds can’t breathe or pant efficiently, and often have trouble cooling themselves down. If your dog displays symptoms of heat exhaustion, wetting their coat, providing cool water, shade, and setting them beside a gentle fan may relieve the condition, said Dr. Charlie Arntson of Kindness Animal Hospital. Dr. Wise added that other common summertime issues include lacerations, sprains, and strains, all a result of increased activity. Ear and skin infections are also common. “It’s important to examine your dog’s skin often,” Wise said. “Dry them off thoroughly after swimming, and clean their ears regularly.” Every vet emphasized the importance of providing dogs and cats with a constant supply of cool water and shade during the steamy months. Keep strenuous activity to the cool morning and evening hours, and both you and your pet will be happier.

“ Dogs and cats generally do quite well in cold temperatures , until it gets below 0,” said Dr. Vollendorf. That’s when, after you’ve discovered icicles on your nose, you want to check your pet’s extremities as well. Noses, feet, ears, and tails are all susceptible to frostbite. Cats in particular are susceptible to losing ear or tail tips; in dogs the problem often lies with breeds that have either very floppy or noticeably upright ears. “Athletic dogs generally don’t have as many issues with frostbite,” said Dr. Arntson, “because they have a good blood flow.” Another potential issue to watch for is paw irritation caused by salt or de-icing chemicals. Some vets recommend dog boots for those with sensitive feet, which may be accepted with varying degrees of tolerance. No matter the animal, said Dr. Wise, it’s important that they have shelter out of the cold and snow. Water should be available at all times.

Flyball This competitive canine sport includes a 51-foot long course that requires four puppy participants to jump four hurdles, activate a spring-loaded box and catch a tennis ball. When one dog returns to the start/finish line, the next leg in the four-dog team begins. The American record for the timed event is 15.2 seconds. If you think your four-legged friend is smart and swift enough, they may be right for the Chippewa Valley Wuff Pack or the Canine Dirt Diggers. SLED RACES Though Wisconsin and Minnesota aren’t known for their sled races or agility championships (Alaska and Europe have those honors), dozens seem to sneak into the states’ borders every year. So take apart the swing set and construct a course, or hop on a toboggan and get a really long leash. After all, you don’t need an Alaskan Malamute or pot-bellied pig named Babe to take home the trophy.

KEEPING THE BOWL FULL PETS NEED FOOD DONATIONS TOO BY TY LER JENNINGS HENDERSON than last year’s $500 to continue to keep up with the rising need. Anyone who qualifies for food through the St. Francis Food Pantry eligibility system can collect pet food. “People don’t realize that these people have pets, and their pets might need food too,” she said. “That’s why we thought we’d shed a little light on that too.” Karen Rabideaux of the Eau Claire County Human Association sees this as a necessary step in slowing down the influx of pets at local shelters. “About 25 percent of pets that are brought in are due to not being able to care for them, about 8 percent would be food-related,” she estimated. “People wouldn’t be surrendering their pets if they have that resource to go to.” The ECCHA also has a program available to people who are unable to attain pet food. WALOP, or We All Love Our Pets, is a program that in partnership with Meals On Wheels delivers pet food to senior citizens and people with special needs. Established in 2006, the program currently serves about 25 senior citizens in feeding their pets, with more opportunities available through application. It’s easy to forget about pets in the larger picture of poverty, but luckily these organizations are there to catch any that might slip through the cracks.

“About 25% of pets that are brought in are due to not being able to care for them, about 8% would be food-related. People wouldn’t be surrendering their pets if they have that resource to go to.” - Karen Rabideaux, Eau Claire County Humane Association

ANDREA PAULSETH

Pets are known to increase health, happiness, and overall quality of life, so when families find themselves in a financially troubling situation, the last thing they want to do is part ways with Sparky. Lisa Wenholz of Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital, 4616 Commerce Valley Road, is hoping to help pets in households by collecting donations of cash and animal food in partnership with the St. Francis Food Pantry. “We did a food drive last fall in November, but turned out to be mostly ‘in-house,’ ” she said “We still raised about $500, and along with donations from the Purina brand, we purchased over 800 pounds of dog food and 90 pounds of cat food.” Numbers were calculated via a poll at the pantry, and it turns out that more and more families are in need of food in order to keep their furry friends. “We decided to do it again in June because the summer months have a higher need,” Wenholz said. “We decided to contact news stations to see if they’d get that (news) out, and Pet Food Plus has partnered with us.” That partnership has led to donation barrels outside Pet Food Plus, 3460 Mall Drive, hoping to bring in more bags of food. Wenholz says that Oakwood Hills is trying to raise more

NEW DOG PARK COMING SOON? BY TOM GIFFEY

ANDREA PAULSETH

Dogs need exercise too – even in the dog days of summer – and that’s where dog parks come in. Eau Claire’s offlease recreation area, also known as the Otter Creek Dog Park, provides pooches with nine acres in which to chase their own (and each other’s) tails while free of their owners’ restrictive leashes. And the city has plans to add a second dog park in the next couple of years. Phil Fieber, Eau Claire’s director of parks, recreation, and forestry, says the city is working with the state Department of Transportation to acquire a plot of

land along the Chippewa River south of Interstate 94 across from the wastewater treatment plant (which is at the end of Ferry Street). The roughly 20-acre area is subject to spring flooding, “but the rest of the year it’s a fantastic area for dogs who like to have access to water,” Fieber says. The city hopes to conclude negotiations this year – the DOT wants to retain an easement on the property so it can repair or replace nearby I-94 bridges – and get to work on planning and design next year. The project would also include the construction of a parking lot and the improvement of a nearby boat landing. Construction could start in 2016 and would have to be coordinated with the remodeling of the wastewater plant, Fieber adds. That may seem like the near future for us humans, but remember 2016 is 14 years away in dog years.
