‘dogs are good for the soul’ one Eau Claire groomer uses love, body language, and passion to pamper area pets W O R D S

Libby Baribeau transferred a decade of horse riding and training experience to a new arena when she began her grooming career more than 20 years ago. Working alongside Puckabee’s Canine Salon owner Melissa Kullman, Baribeau uses her extensive knowledge of animal body language to groom a wide range of animals: cats and dogs, of course, as well as the occasional guinea pig. Each grooming session begins with a bath and is followed by a blow dry and a haircut. All the products used in the salon are biodegradable and are made from natural materials and cruelty-free ingredients. Some of Baribeau’s regulars are so experienced – and love their time in the salon so much – that they head straight for the tub when they arrive. “We have massage jets in there,” Baribeau said, “and you can see how much they enjoy it. … The personalities we get to see every day are great! After their haircut, the show-offs often get down and strut around. They know they look good.” As well as providing traditional services, the salon also specializes in grooming dogs with special needs, including age- and behavior-related challenges. Both Baribeau and Kullman have more than 20 years of grooming experience, which makes them experts at understanding how to help animals relax. “After so many years of working

with animals, large and small, we have great reflexes and are very good at reading their body language,” Baribeau said. “We have very little surprise trouble. We can almost always tell when something is brewing and so we work to prevent it. Sometimes we have to take extra time with a pet who’s really nervous. Patience is so important.” Because the salon accommodates special-needs dogs, both Baribeau and Kullman undertake regular continuing education certifications. Baribeau’s current course focuses on helping fearful dogs overcome anxiety, and she is in the process of studying for her Reiki master qualification. “I’m looking forward to being able to use it on the dogs,” she said. “I love being able to pamper them.” A lifelong animal lover, Baribeau began riding horses in fifth grade. For the next 10 years, she rode, trained horses, and gave riding lessons. Even after she stopped riding, she continued giving lessons. It was on a whim that she decided to try grooming. “I love it,” she said. “I couldn’t do anything else now. It’s such a satisfying job. We get to see the best of human-animal relationships. The pets that come in are adored by their families.” Ultimately, as Baribeau explains, “Dogs are good for the soul.”

early, just when empty cars in driveways are coming to life, remotely triggered by the owners getting ready for work. There’s very little traffic then, though more than it’s been over the past year, and Penny and I usually walk in the street, since otherwise Penny would have to stop and sniff every blade of grass, mailbox, or fire hydrant another dog may have visited in the past decade. Besides burning a few calories, you’d think these walks would be a great opportunity to plan out my day, think about obligations, enjoy the squirrels and crows, or even meditate over some mystery of life. However, usually I find myself thinking about … poop. You see, since moving into a city after 40 years in the sticks, I’ve discovered dog poop is a pretty big deal here. Will this be a one or two poop walk? Have I brought enough plastic grocery bags? If Penny hesitates on someone’s lawn, will the owners be hovering at their window, ready to harangue me if I don’t seem to be preparing for a poop scoop? And what about pee? My neighbor got scolded the other day for allowing her little cattle dog to urinate on someone else’s boulevard. “I have cameras!” the pajama-ed property owner yelled. Granted, a female dog’s pee may kill a little patch of grass, but am I now required to carry a catch-cup in addition to a poop bag? I guess there are dog diapers, but who would be humiliated the most, me or Penny? Within walking distance is a scrubby little woods where I sometimes let Penny off leash, hoping she’ll find a hidden spot to leave her calling card. I like to think she

Lately, however, Penny seems to be realizing that once she poops she’ll be back on leash, so she saves it for the walk home. I heard a comedian once say that

if aliens on another planet were watching us through gigantic telescopes, they’d probably guess dogs are the masters here on Earth, since we – their apparent slaves – feed them, groom them, take them for walks, and dutifully dispose of their most disgusting bodily functions. No matter who’s the master and who’s the slave, I get it: Nobody wants to step in dog poop. And no matter the unpleasant inconve-

nience of cleaning up after Penny, at the very least, a little humility is said to be good for the soul. But this small adjustment to city life, for me, has broader implications. Leaving the seclusion of living in the woods to rejoin a community, coupled with the experiences of the past year, has brought me a richer appreciation for the notion that we are, as echoed so many times in 2020, “all in this together.”

H U E T T N E R

Let the good times roll – Mardi Gras style – with the Eau Claire County Humane Association’s second annual Cat’s Meow fundraiser, slated for 5:30-9pm on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Wild Ridge Golf Course. Guests can expect a night slam-packed with live entertainment, food, drinks, a silent auction, raffles, and more. Some of the prizes up for grabs include various intricate works of art, pet packages, tickets to Pablo Center events, evening-out packages, and even an aviation tour that will give winners a bird’s-eye look at Eau Claire. Guests will have the opportunity to mingle with one another, learn more about the shelter, view photos of adoptable animals they’re supporting, dance, and bust out a sweet Mardi Gras outfit at this paw-some

event! On top of a night full of fun, 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales and revenue will benefit the shelter over the coming year. “I encourage people to come to the event not only to have fun, but to have fun while also supporting the shelter and the hundreds of animals we take care of,” said Shelley Janke, executive director of the humane association. Wondering how you can attend this event? The ECCHA has 250 tickets available for pre-order through their donation website for $75 a person, covering the live performance and free food, so act fast before they’re gone. doggone good idea UW-STOUT GRAD’S INVENTION PLACES IN national DESIGN COMPETITION W O R D S

Claire Dronen, a recent UW-Stout industrial design graduate, loves walking, running, and being outdoors with her mixedbreed dog, Benji. To protect Benji’s paws, Dronen tried doggie boots, which Benji disliked and pulled off quickly. She then started to use wax to protect Benji’s paws from snow, ice, salt, and other elements as well as to provide better traction on slippery floors. “It’s really messy,” Dronen said of applying the wax. “You had to use your fingers and it took a long time to get the wax applied.” Then Dronen came up with the paw-fect idea to create an applicator for paw wax. For her Industrial Design 5 class in fall 2020, Dronen designed the PupRub Speedy Paw Protector, an application device for the paw wax. “It is really neat,” Dronen said. “This applicator solves multiple

B Y

P O W E R S

problems for both humans and canines. Color, materials, and finish were important considerations, and its portable size makes it easy to bring Dronen when you are on the go.” PupRub garnered Dronen, who graduated in May, third place in the International Housewares Association Inspired Home Show’s annual Student Design Competition. She garnered a $1,000 award. Dronen is elated with placing in the contest. “There were 146 applicants,” she said. “There were entries from last year and this year so there was a larger pool.”

Design Professor Jennifer Astwood taught the class in which Dronen developed PupRub. “She was headed in a specific direction during the midterm part of the project, but she trusted her instincts and she followed her design research,” Astwood said. “Claire chose to pivot her final direction to an area that made more sense. She continued to develop her design work and do additional prototyping to develop a more successful design.” Dronen works full time as an associate industrial designer at Avient Design in St. Louis, a product manufacturing, design, and testing company. She was an intern at the company from September to December 2020 as part of the Cooperative Education and Internship Program at Career Services. After working at Avient Design, Dronen said she would have incorporated a broader knowledge of

injection molding to her PupRub design, which she does not plan to market at this time. “I love the problem-solving of industrial design,” she said. “It has really practical applications. I do feel some responsibility as an industrial designer to consider sustainability and all its facets and make quality items.” Dronen also hopes more women will enter the industrial design field. In the U.S. just 19% of industrial designers are women, and in the United Kingdom that figure is 5%. “That isn’t enough representation,” she said. “We need more women in design.”

‘dog mom’ ventures into cat territory adopted scaredy cat helps longtime dog owner cope with loss W O R D S

B Y

C A I T L I N

B O Y L E

I am – and always will be – a dog mom. My dog, Ripley, was a blind, senior pooch who was my entire world. He was the best thing to come out of a painful breakup, and the bond we shared was indescribable – the two of us against the world. So when I lost him quickly and unexpectedly this past spring, I didn’t know how I could go on without him. The phrase “losing a pet can be harder than losing a family member” is so true. I knew I wanted to adopt another pet by the fall, but I couldn’t imagine having another dog that wasn’t Ripley. Enter Marley, a cat from the Eau Claire County Humane Association with a slight birth defect on her right eye. After raising a blind dog for two years, I didn’t consider it a big deal, but I have never owned a cat or considered myself a cat person. When I came across her bio on the humane association’s website, though, it seemed meant to be. Needless to say, I was quite anxious to meet her. Our first meeting did not go well. She was so panicked; she didn’t want anything to do with me. Despite her initial reaction – and her distaste for being at the shelter – I was still willing to take a chance on her, and I brought her home. Immediately, I gave her space to explore and get acclimated to her new surroundings and was amazed at how fast she came around. She quickly let me pet her more and began snuggling with me. Our bond has gotten stronger ever since. I still, and always will, miss Ripley. But Marley has brought brightness back into my life. You might think you know what you need in your life – you might think you don’t want to adopt the old, mangy, scrag-

But

sometimes life throws you curveballs. And you need a furry friend to fetch those curveballs back for you.

And you never know until you look right into the perfect pet’s eyes, and they seem to say, “It’s meant to be.”
