Small But Magnificent!

Jack the Magnificent, Eau Claire’s Most Famous Mini Horse W O R D S

Jack the Magnificent, as his Facebook page and owner Rose Vicent have dubbed him, is the Eastside Hill pony many Eau Claire residents have come to recognize and adore. Mini but mighty, Jack is a 7-year-old, 400-pound mini horse currently in training to be a therapy animal, and he’s been as much there for Rose as she has been there for him for years now. “I was paralyzed by a horse 14 years ago, so I was out of the horse world for years after that,” Rose recalled. “After I was done with rehab (which took about a decade), I met Jack just two weeks after I’d ridden again for the first time since. He was just determined he was going to come home with me.” Rose got her first horse after college years ago, having graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 2004, and had started several other young horses. Though she had loved riding prior to her accident, she remembered being more scared than she thought she would be once she began riding again. Jack entered her life during a time when they both needed each other most. Jack had been living with other horses and mules on one of Rose’s friend’s land, and though she had tried to acclimate him and the oth-

ers to each other several times, Jack ended up being a loner; he licked and played with the regular-sized horses too much for their liking, and even a donkey hadn’t liked his playful nature even though they were closer in size. He’d also been re-homed several times. “He was a better fit with people than with other horses,” Rose said. “He came home with me and found his purpose in life.” Many have wondered how Rose has been able to live with Jack inside the city limits. Though there are city guidelines about keeping animals such as Jack in the city, being a registered emotional-support animal and having enough land to live on allowed for him to move in just fine. Coming home with Rose around the initial years of COVID-19, Rose said he reminded people – herself included – about joy and being together. Kids have especially taken to him, and he has a soft spot for them, too. “The first time I realized that we were going to do more, that he was going to do more, was when a lady pulled over while we were walking down the road and said, ‘Can my daughter meet your horse?’ And this little girl got out, and you could tell she was quite fragile,” Rose explained. “I thought, ‘Man, I wonder what Jack’s gonna do,’ because at this point he was still so new to this life. She came up, and he just wrapped around her and stood there still as stone, and she played with his hair. It was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen; I

cried the whole way home.” Rose met that little girl’s teacher about a year later and found out she is doing very well and is cancer-free. “Jack just knows when people are hurting, so as goofy as he is, he’s got this big heart. You just can’t teach that.” Since then, Jack has become a favorite of area daycares, and kids run out to greet him when he walks by, exchanging hugs and kisses. He’s also been to outdoor birthday parties and recently made his first-ever school visit to the Chippewa Valley Montessori Charter School. Though he and Rose are limited to their general area since they don’t have a trailer to transport him long distances, they are happy to trot along together, Rose riding him too. They’ve walked about 500 miles together in total, she said. Though certainly still in training – mini horses typically live to be about 35, and Jack is just seven years old – Jack is a big ol’ sweetheart. Rose said he has a large vocabulary and is very smart, able to understand keywords and cues, but the biggest thing for them is working on boundaries, particularly with his mouth. Always licking and grinning, he’s never had an incident with anyone, but Rose wants to be able to fully trust him, she explained. “He needs to go a little farther on with his therapy training because I have to trust him not to panic, and that’s just going to take practice,” she said. “Once we get transport figured out, I think we’ll go to Farm and Fleet because they’re a good first-practice place. So, for right now, we’re just kind of meeting people outside and practicing.” Jack loves to curl up in the cor-

ner of his living space in Rose’s yard, toss balls and toys around (including a giant-sized Kong filled with carrots) and enjoy the cool Wisconsin weather thanks to the thick winter coat he grows each year. Folks can message Jack’s Facebook page to set up an outdoor event or a time to visit Jack; otherwise, he can often be seen trotting along with Rose beside him or riding him bareback around the neighborhood. “This was never for-profit or anything, it just really turned out to be a blessing that I want to share,” Rose said. “And, he’s kind of irresistible.” Keep up with them on their Facebook page, Jack the Magnificent!

New ECCHA Facility Update overwhelming support for shelter’s campaign puts construction a year ahead of schedule W O R D S

M C K E N N A

S C H E R E R

The Eau Claire County Humane Association’s “Be the Voice” campaign is closing in on its $6.5 million goal after about a year and a half of fundraising and an outpouring of support from the community, the animal shelter aiming to be moved in by fall of 2024. A facet of the community to animals and humans alike since its opening in 1968, the current ECCHA building has housed and helped thousands of animals since it was built 25 years ago. Being a sanctuary to 1,500-2,000 animals a year for that length of time means the expected wear and tear, and alongside ECCHA’s increased standards of care over the years, the organization has outgrown the space in a variety of ways. The campaign site’s critical need for more boarding space for animals, an on-site veterinarian treatment unit to be used as a safe place for treatment and triage at the shelter, natural lighting, and basic building

updates like plumbing and ventilation. ECCHA is just under $1 million in funding away from achieving its goal, currently sitting at $5.8 million, its official launch occurring just this past May. “We are about a year ahead of schedule and we could not do it without the amazing donors! It’s so true that every single dollar counts,” ECCHA Marketing and Development Director Addie Erdmann said.

| NOVEMBER 3, 2022

The overall idea for a new building site for the shelter have been in the works for several years, Erdmann said. Project bidding and the creation of the campaign’s committee began in early 2019 and had hoped to launch plans in 2020, but had to hold off due to the pandemic. A quiet launch phase kicked off in the summer of 2021, and because of the generous support of the community and donors, ECCHA had raised $5.5

million by mid-February of this year. The new building will be double the size of the current space and will be constructed near it on the same area of land at 3900 Old Town Hall Road in Eau Claire. Once construction does begin, tentatively in early 2023, the shelter will continue to operate, moving usable items from the current space into the new building while gradually moving in. Erdmann said the build process should take about 18 months, but since the campaign is ahead of schedule, ECCHA is not on Market & Johnson’s schedule until next year. “We are able to start on building now that we have surpassed a certain percentage of our goal and will continue to raise the remaining (about) 10% until the project is completed,” she explained. “We hope to be all moved in by the fall of 2024, or earlier if it’s at all possible. We can’t wait!” Learn more about the campaign and how to donate at ecchabethevoice. org.

Meet CeeCee the Pomeranian See CeeCee at the UW-Eau Claire McIntyre Library, where she makes all of the students’ hearts melt. CeeCee is a part of UW-Eau Claire’s therapy dog program that has been around for almost 12 years now, with 30-35 different dogs visiting over the years. Students, staff, and faculty endlessly enjoy the visits with CeeCee and the other dogs, especially during finals week when stress runs high. The dogs sit in the library for about an hour at a time and greet any students or faculty they may see. “I always joke that there are three kind of people who see the therapy dogs,” joked Jenna Vande Zande, McIntyre’s User Services and Communications Coordinator. “There’s the walkers – the ones who will just walk by and smile; there’s the quick petters – the ones who just run up and give the dogs a quick pat on their way to classes; and there’s the squatters – those who will sit there for the whole visit and chat with the handlers and play with the dogs. But no matter what, everyone’s happy to see them.”

Meet Murphy the Labradoodle Reporting for cutie duty, Murphy is the Eau Claire Police Department’s resident therapy dog. Murphy was gifted to the ECPD as a pup back in June (check out the Volume One article from when he joined the force at VolumeOne.org) by Blueberry Cottage Labradoodles because they knew he would have the best temperament to help and calm both police officers and the general public. Since we last met with Murphy, he has started working toward his career as a therapy dog. “He has been to Puppy Einstein class at emBark and did a two-week training that included boarding at Barks N Rec,” said ECPD Public Informations Officer Josh Miller. “He’s got a ways to go until he’s a full-blown therapy dog but we are impressed by his progress! He’s pretty much the star of any tour we bring through.”

Meet Watson the Golden Retriever Elementary, my dear Watson. Watson is a therapy dog legacy since his mom had also been a certified therapy dog. His handler, Cindi, and her family then agreed that Watson had the perfect temperament to follow in his mom’s foot steps. Cindi’s daughter was also in the hospital years earlier, and a therapy dog had helped both her and Cindi feel better. Back in 2015, Watson and Cindi trained in the Pet Partners pet therapy program that is sponsored by Mayo Clinic Health System. Since then, Watson had been such a shining light for all of the patients he has visited at Mayo Clinic, particularly those on hospice. Though the Mayo Paws Force program has been paused since the COVID-19 pandemic, his years of service are still appreciated. “One patient in particular we had visited three times, and she hadn’t said a word to us. However, she always made eye contact,” Cindi said. “On our fourth visit, as we were leaving, I said to her that we would stop again soon to see her. She spoke to us for the first time saying, ‘I hope you do.’ I knew at that moment that Watson and I were making a difference and were giving back what my daughter and I were given in the hospital so many years before.”

Meet Bernie the Golden Doodle Feel the Bern! Bernie is also from the Mayo Clinic Paws Force team and had been volunteering with his handler, Eugene, since 2016. Bernie has a knack for brightening the day of anyone he comes into contact with, and Eugene said he could tell by the visits that Bernie is hugely impactful to the healing and well-being of others. The Mayo Clinic Paws Force program is still on pause, but Bernie already helped so many people during his time as at Mayo. (Learn more about the program on page 49.) “Dogs are nonjudgmental, calming and help get your mind off a bad day,” Gagnon said. “Bernie is a very important part of my life, and we hardly are ever separated. To be able to work with Bernie to help those in need is a truly amazing experience.”

Meet Piper the Chocolate Lab Polly and her pretty Piper have a passion for people. Unfortunelty, a car accident caused one of Piper’s legs to be amputated, but that didn’t stop her from spreading joy over at Eau Claire’s Mayo Clinic before the Paws Force program paused. “One of Piper’s favorite stops is the staff in Trauma Services because she knows they keep treats for her,” Polly said. “She has a lot of other staff member friends throughout the hospital who spoil her as well. Sometimes it is staff who need to see Piper the most because we can all have rough days working in this field.”

Paws Force is Coming Back! Do You Think Your Pup Could Help Others? Mayo Clinic Health System in Northwest Wisconsin partners with Pet Partners’ Therapy Animal Program. They train volunteers, and screen volunteers and their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities. The program ensures that both ends of the leash — people, as well as animals — are well-prepared to participate in animal-assisted activity and animal-assisted therapy programs. Once trained, dogs and their handlers can become part of the Paws Force volunteers. Your dog may be a good fit for Paws Force if you answer yes to these questions: 1. Is your dog friendly and well-behaved? 2. Does your dog enjoy meeting new people of all ages? 3. Is your dog reliable and friendly around other dogs? 4. Has your dog completed several levels of obedience classes in the past two years? Note: these classes must be positive reinforcement-only training programs. Those interested in learning more can email volunteerservices@ mayo.edu or call (715) 838-3262.

program was born,” ECCHA’s Marketing Director Addie Erdmann said. The program requires potential adopters to have a rural outdoor shelter available and the willingness to adopt at least two cats. That way, the cats have a warm spot to go to in the Wisconsin winters and a safe spot to retreat to in case they get scared or hurt. Having a home to roam back to also means that food and water you put out are always available and vet checks are possible. As for the reasoning behind adopting barn cats in pairs, Erdmann explains, “cats relocated in pairs are also more likely

to stay after release and they keep one another warm during winter.” One of the positive personality traits that ECCHA looks for in potential adopters is a commitment to the animal’s welfare and willingness to set up their cats for success in their new rural environment. It is also great to see animal lovers and well-researched individuals who are willing to go the extra mile to see what exactly they are getting into with the type of pet they adopt.
