They’ve had to navigate the pandemic and its continued fallout in numerous ways: rapidly changing health regulations, staffing challenges, and supply shortages – to name just a few. Reviews from the first years of Restaurant Week told us the event had already become an annual tradition for diners across the Chippewa Valley. It impacts the lives and experi ences of the people who live there, it affects visitors’ interest in spending time there, and it makes up an important piece of the community’s overall economic and cultural success. The grand prize is a four-night stay for two peo ple at the Iberostar Quetzal, an all-inclusive resort along the white sand beaches of Playa del Carmen. After that, you have until Nov. 16, 2022 (60 days) to visit 10 different participating establishments and have them stamp or sign your passport prov ing you visited.

Fall is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than to enjoy picking apples, touring farms, and eating a delicious lunch? This event will happen rain or shine, so no need for worrying. The tour will start at The Glass Orchard where participants will be able to pick some apples, check out the glass studio, and shop their retail store! The next stop is Sunbow Farm, where participants will receive a complete tour of the farm and free samples along the way. Last but certainly not least on the tour is Together Farms where there will be lunch and a tour of the farm!

Pedals and pints are quite a combination, right? This event is hosted by Bike Chippewa Valley and is free for all. The event starts at the Brewing Projekt, with a pit stop at Eau Claire Cheese & Deli for free samples, and then to K Point for $1 off beers. The ride will end back at Brewing Projekt. The route is approximately 11 miles with city streets and bike trails. Helmets are required! Feed My People is the charity beneficiary of this year’s Chippewa Valley Restaurant Week, which runs Sept. 16-25 at nearly 30 participat ing restaurants around the region. Specifically, a share of proceeds from the Fall Foliage & Farm Tour on Sept. 24 will be donated to Feed My People. (Learn more about how you can take part in that event, which includes firsthand experiences at local farms as well as a delicious lunch, on page 6.)

Gilbert recalled a situation that occurred at a pop-up food pantry earlier this year at the Brewing Projekt in Eau Claire: Someone’s vehicle ran out of gas while they were waiting in line for “Unfortunately,food. those were the choices that people have to make,” Gilbert said of the fuel-ver

Among the food bank’s most frequent benefi ciaries are children. Last year alone, Feed My People provided more than 224,000 meals to kids –amounting to 615 hungry children fed each day.

Today, while the employment picture has brightened, rising prices have made it hard to fill grocery carts for many people in the 14-county area Feed My People serves.

“Inflation’s really having an affect on people,” said Jeremy Gilbert, corporate giving specialist for Feed My People. “The people who are not able to deal with the rising cost of inflation are the people we see in our lines.”

BANKING ON HELP

Feed My People, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, distributes 6.6 million pounds of food annually, most of it through more than 260 hunger relief programs across western Wisconsin. These include the likes of the Community Table, which serves free meals daily in Eau Claire, as well as numerous food pantries and meal programs.

While Feed My People gratefully accepts dona tions of surplus food, it is also in need of financial donations and the help of volunteers. Gilbert noted that many current volunteers are retirees, so it’s important to continue to engage younger generations in the food pantry’s work as well. A good time to do so is during September, which has been designated Hunger Action Month.
