CELEBRATING & BUILDING OUR RESTAURANT SCENE You can be a part of the return of Restaurant Week, featuring nearly 50 restaurants, Sept. 21-30
R
estaurant culture is a crucial component of the value of a community. It impacts the lives and experiences of the people who live there, it affects visitors’ interest in spending time there, and it makes up an important piece of the community’s overall economic and cultural success. So it’s critical we as a community give credence and support to the sustainability and growth of our restaurant scene. That includes supporting the scene’s financial success as well as its ability to find additional cuisines and restaurant models that can succeed here and create a stronger, more diverse culinary culture. That comes through experimentation on the part of the restaurants and entrepreneurs, through open-mindedness and curiosity on the part of the dining public, and through spreading the word to friends and family about what’s new, what’s good, and what you want to see more of. With that celebration in mind, 50 visionary restaurants in Eau Claire, Menomonie, and Chippewa Falls have signed on to launch the second year of Restaurant Week, offering special menus and deals with the hopes that you’ll come out to support their endeavors and celebrate their hard-working staffs. You’ll find each restaurant’s offers in the back of this guide. I’ll just say there’s some pretty tasty-sounding stuff back there. You can also read about a handful of special events and prizes you can win for participating (including a trip for two to Mexico). Public reviews from last year’s inau-

gural Restaurant Week told us the event has already become a favorite tradition for diners across the Chippewa Valley. So whether you took part last year or not, now’s your chance to get out there and experience something new. Along with Volume One, our presenting community partner this year is Time Federal Savings Bank, which has signed on to help support the restaurant scene of the entire region through its involvement in Restaurant Week. A number of other sponsors stepped up to play a role as well (see the list below), creating a truly community-fueled event supporting the restaurants taking part and the diners who will benefit from the offers and events. Restaurant Week is about celebrating the great restaurants we have and the amazing culinary and service talent that runs them. It’s about inspiring what might come next. It’s about getting outside your usual routine to find the participating restaurants you haven’t yet visited, or trying a dish that might push your boundaries. But it’s also about enjoying the classic comforts of your tried-and-true favorites. In whatever way works for you, use this event to vote for the future you want for our restaurant scene. Check out the list of restaurants who stepped up to take part and take these 10 days to visit all your favorites, discover some new ones, and send the message that you’re ready for our restaurant scene to thrive. –Nick Meyer

Square Roots Farms • Fall Creek – Square Roots Farm is a diversified vegetable farm resting on 40 acres just south of Eau Claire in Fall Creek. They produce vegetables without the use of synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or insecticides. This farm has been providing nutritious greens to Chippewa Valley restaurants since 2014. Sacred Blossom • Mondovi – This local farm grows a number of flowers, trees, and fruits, which are used to create all-natural tea blends. Sacred Blossom uses mixed polycultures (where multiple plants are grown in the same space in a supportive ecosystem) and hand-picks ingredients to dry and process. Products are available at numerous local eateries and retailers. Together Farms • Mondovi – Livestock at Together Farms are raised with attention to animal care and environmental impact. Animals are given lots of room to roam among hazelnut and oak trees, and tended to using Intensive Rotational Grazing, which helps sustain them and the land they feed off of.

HEARTY MEALS FOR THOSE IN NEED
Kickoff event will raise funds for the Community Table
C
elebrating the thriving culture and burgeoning variety of Chippewa Valley restaurants comes with a responsibility to remember that not all of the people in our community have consistent, reliable access to food – it also comes with the opportunity to do something about it. One out of nine people in west-central Wisconsin is food insecure, meaning that they don’t know when their next meal will be or where it will come from. That’s why when you purchase ticket to the First Taste Culinary Crawl event, Restaurant Week’s kickoff event, a portion of the ticket sales will go toward The Community Table. The Chippewa Valley Community Table has been serving the region by

offering a free, no questions asked meal to anyone who needs it for 25 years, and is bringing volunteers and community members alike together Sept. 13 to celebrate a quarter century of service. The event will take place after normal Thursday lunch service (11:30am-1pm) from 4:30-8pm in the facility and in the parking lot. Festivities include a celebrity chef cooking competition, a bake sale, food trucks, a massive group selfie of volunteers from the present and past, and a few words from four of the program’s founding volunteers. Since Executive Director Michelle Koehn came on at the end of 2017, the Community Table has doubled down on fundraising and grant writing efforts.
“We had a very big hole to fill, and the community did a great job in helping us overcome that,” Koehn said. With renewed community investment and an overhaul of internal organizational systems, the program was able to pay back the debts that existed at the end of last year and make new investments in the facility with the replacement of several appliances. Now, they are expanding outreach to Chippewa Valley youths through educational programs and activities. They are designed to be hands-on and fun, creating a positive association between the Community Table, food, and children’s daily lives. “Those programs are new, those initiatives are new, and now we’re trying to sustain them,” Koehn said. “We have very very generous donors who believed in this program.” With youth programming scheduled for the remainder of 2018, the Community Table expects to provide 8,000 meals for young people by the end of the year. This will be more than six times the number of people under the age of 18 they served in 2017. This focus on area young people will extend to the 25th anniversary celebration. Youth groups will perform martial arts sequences, Korean dances, and
music from 4:30-5:45pm, and of course, attendees of any age are welcome. Koehn hopes that by exposing children of all economic backgrounds to the Community Table, the organization can eliminate the negative stigma associated with soup kitchens. “I think there’s a very real phenomenon called the ‘domino effect,’ of youth helping youth,” Koehn said. If young people who don’t necessarily need to use the Community Table tell their friends about it in a positive light, others will learn that it’s a safe place to go if they need food, she explained. Overall last year, the Community Table used 60,000 pounds of food to provide more than 38,000 meals to Chippewa Vallians. The program is always looking for volunteers to make this happen; they need 7-12 volunteers a day for a total need of about 3,500 helpers a year. Financial donations are also welcome, as they provide the organization with the flexibility to prioritize and address their needs. “We don’t take a dollar for granted,” Koehn said. For more information about the Community Table, including the anniversary celebration, how to donate, and how to sign up to volunteer, visit their website: www.thecommunitytable.org.

ESSENTIAL CHIPPEWA VALLEY DRINK CHECKLIST
The Chippewa Valley is becoming increasingly known for its breweries, distilleries, and wineries. Be sure to plan a stop during Restaurant Week to check out the following picks for the perfect cocktail, beer, or glass of wine ...
“SUMMER HEAT” — INFINITY BEVERAGES WINERY & DISTILLERY
“OKTOBERFEST” — LAZY MONK BREWING
The Summer Heat is one of Infinity Beverages Winery and Distillery’s most popular cocktails, made with your choice of Infinity’s Original Audacity Vodka or naturally infused Audacity Chile Pepper Vodka. The cocktail is a combination of house made simple syrup, lemonade, fresh cucumber and jalapenos making it slightly spicy but also delightfully refreshing. The majority of Infinity’s cocktails change seasonally, but Summer Heat is so popular that it remains on the Tasting Lounge Menu regardless of the season!
Lazy Monk Brewing keeps the historic tradition alive with its Oktoberfest, one of the oldest and most beloved bier styles. Dating back to the early 1800s, this classic style of bier rings through in all the elements of our Oktoberfest. With a beautiful copper hue, this light refreshing lager has a slight malty sweet flavor with hints of caramel throughout. Okotberfest is a customer favorite and definitively a bier worth celebrating for the season.

“RASPBERRY SWEET TART” – CHIPPEWA RIVER DISTILLERY
“AUTUMN APPLE PIE SLUSH” — AUTUMN HARVEST WINERY
Made from their brand new, just-released Raspberry Schnapps and Black Currant Flavored Vodka, the Chippewa River Distillery’s Raspberry Sweet Tart cocktail is the perfect way to welcome autumn in the Valley. A little sweetness with a tart kick, it’s an ideal fall drink.
Come on out to the orchard and stroll into fall with us! To celebrate our favorite season we’d like to share our homemade Autumn Apple Pie Slush with you! It’s a new signature beverage made on-site only with our Honeycrisp apple wine, a sprinkle of organic cinnamon, a hint of raw sugar, and a cinnamon stirring stick. Refreshing, with just the right amount of rich flavor and even antioxidants!

“LAVENDER COLLINS” — RIVER BEND VINEYARD & WINERY
“VERSE/PROSE” — MODICUM BREWING COMPANY
River Bend’s Lavender Collins is a reiteration of a classic with a fresh twist. This cocktail is made with gin, lavender simple syrup, fresh squeezed lemon, and club soda. However, River Bend’s Craftsman Gin is what really enhances this cocktail with natural citrus and lavender notes, setting it apart from any other Collins. On a visit to River Bend, it’s one drink you absolutely have to try.
These two sister beers are brewed with the exact same recipe: same malts, hops, etc. but they’re fermented with different yeast strains. Prose is a classic euro-style pilsner. It’s clean and toasty with a floral hop note. Verse is a Belgian-style saison. It’s bursting with fruity esters and an earthy spiciness. Try them both in an 8 oz. comparative flight to see what a difference yeast makes.

“OKTOBERFEST BEER” — LEINENKUGEL’S
“GUNPOWDER IPA” — THE BREWING PROJEKT
Our proud German heritage shines through in our homage to arguably the world’s greatest festival. A traditional Märzen-style beer, our Leinenkugel’s® Oktoberfest has a toasted malt flavor and subtle, spicy hop notes that make it perfect for celebrating fall in true German fashion. So let your steins runneth over. Pairs with: brats, spaetzles, pork chops, soft pretzels and spiced apple cake.
A bright and bold IPA that won’t burn you buds. This beer gets its aroma from Gunpowder Green Tea and citrus zest in the boil with generous dry hop additions of Citra Hops. With it’s herbal complexity and balanced backbone … this IPA is sure to please.
