‘HAPPY HOLIDAY TO YOU’
now that we’ve slogged through election season, let Andy Williams bring us together BY TOM GIFFEY
A
s I sat down to work on Volume One’s annual Holiday Handbook, it was inevitable that a seasonal song would emerge from my mental playlist and get stuck in my head. In this case, it’s a well-worn chestnut from the legendary Andy Williams Christmas Album that begins with resounding chimes and jingling sleigh bells, and then Williams’ voice ringing out: Happy holiday Happy holiday While the merry bells keep ringing Happy holiday to you Like many of the other tracks on that record – “White Christmas,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and “The Christmas Song,” to name just three – this one is probably etched deeply into your brain, whether you realize it or not. (Hey, they didn’t call Williams “Mr. Christmas” for nothing.) While I’m not typically the kind of guy who starts listening to Christmas music months before the big day – for me, less tends to be more when it comes to holiday tunes – I’ll admit that I didn’t mind having a virtual version of good ol’ Andy bringing me some good cheer. That may be because, to quote another seasonal song, “We need a little Christmas, right this very minute.” Why? This holiday guide is going to press on Election Day – which means that, by the time you read this, there could be pitchfork-and-torch-wielding mobs in the streets. Our democratic
system could be crumbling before our eyes. Or, more likely, roughly half of the population will be tweeting angrily at the other half. Regardless, we’ll all be suffering a hangover from the toxic, seemingly endless election season that has just – mercifully – ended. Thankfully, now that Nov. 8 is behind us, we’re heading into (cue Mr. Christmas again) “the most wonderful time of the year” (a.k.a. “the hap-happiest season of all”) – There’ll be parties for hosting Marshmallows for toasting And caroling out in the snow There’ll be scary ghost stories And tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago All that sounds really great right now – other than the ghost stories, which I’ve always thought were a little out of place in the song (but I digress). This year, let’s collectively agree to act like this really is the most wonderful time of the year, to treat the holiday season as the equivalent of a juice cleanse for our spirits. Although, instead of juice, I’d recommend hot apple cider or a Tom & Jerry. Let’s set aside our political and ideological differences and break bread – or, better yet, fruitcake – together. This time of year offers us countless opportunities to celebrate with our friends, families, and neighbors and to lend a hand to those in the Chippewa Valley who could use one. You’ll find resources to help you do all that (and more) in these pages. VOLUME ONE 2016

HOLIDAY HANDBOOK
Although the silly season may be behind us, there are some people who are prone to politicizing the Christmas season itself, suggesting that the mere use of the synonym “holiday” is somehow belittling the religious celebration on Dec. 25. I respectfully disagree, and I point to the aforementioned Andy Williams album as evidence that the religious and secular versions of the holiday can co-exist peacefully side by side: Side A of The Andy Williams Christmas Album is devoted to secular tunes, while Side B features religious songs such as “Away in a Manger” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” And consider the song stuck in my head, the purely secular medley “Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season,” which uses the word “holiday” not once but twice in its title. Fun fact: In its original setting in the movie musical Holiday Inn, the holiday referred to in “Happy Holiday” is New Year’s Eve, not Christmas. (Oh, and that song, as well as “White Christmas,” was written by a Russian-born Jewish immigrant, Irving Berlin.) My point is, depending on your preferences, you can metaphorically listen to only Side A or Side B of the holiday record – or, if you’re like many Americans, you can enjoy both sides together. Doing it one way or another won’t diminish anyone else’s enjoyment of the music – or the season. However it’s heard, Andy Williams’ voice will be as clear as a jingling bell and as smooth as that first sip of eggnog. So Merry Christmas and happy holiday!

SLEDDING HILLS
Nothing brings a family together like cramming together on a little plastic sled to shoot down a hill. Chippewa Fairgrounds Back Entrance Chippewa
Falls • They may no longer be serving cheese curds and cotton candy, but the rides are not completely gone when the carnival leaves town. The walk-in entrance to the grounds across from Irvine Park provides a perfect pat to safely walk to the top of a rather steep hill. Low person-on-tree collision rates have kept local kids sliding there for years. but look out, because they still like to build a jump or two at the bottom.
Drainage Ditch Run Menomonie • It’s a crazy
drainage ditch on the southeastern side of Lake Menomonie that leads out onto the lake. It might be a lot of fun, but definitely watch out for the black ice.
Dunn County Snow Park Menomonie • On the east
side of the fairground below the looming water tower sits a hill-turned-terrain park that provides local snow goers with a fresh spin on winter fun. Dunn County Snow Park, built and run entirely by volunteers, was once rundown and full of brush, stumps, and debris. Now beginner and freestyle snowboarders, skiers, and sledders will find a vast blanket of snowy hills where creativity runs freely. It’s a BYOS (bring your own shovel) kind of facility with many features like boxes, rails, bonks, and jumps for you to enjoy. Like any hill, it’s still “ride at your own risk.”
Flag Hill Chippewa Falls • Irvine Park has provided
a ton of fun opportunities for people of the Chippewa Valley, but many do not realize the awesome potential for its sledding hills. Venture to Flag Hill once we have gotten a decent amount of snow, and then walk to the edge of the hill in between the parking lot and the Rutledge manor. There is a wicked hill waiting, but it might take a few runs to pack the high grass/ snow down before it’s super fast.
The Flats Hill Eau Claire • Look to the left going
down Pumphouse Road hill, descending from the East Hill of Chippewa Falls, and you’ll find winter bliss just waiting. A sledding hill for all ages and skill levels, this place is wide open, with little to no risk of hitting any trees. Be careful of your speed, though, because legends of the hill have been known to clear the train tracks with one epic run.
Forrest Hill aka “Seven Bumps” aka “Dead Man’s Hill” Eau Claire • Right next to the Forrest Hill Cemetery (on Huebsch Boulevard) on the East Side Hill, the slope is small and gentle with no major obstacles. (Just the thing for weak-hearted novices.) In recent years, its easy accessibility has made it a favorite among area snowboarders, but don’t be intimidated by them. If there is an altercation over a collision, they will have a hard time chasing you with their feet strapped to those boards.
Mount Simon Eau Claire • This hill is known to be
an intense thrill-ride, only for the adventurous and seasoned slider. It may not be Cool Runnings, but some bobsledding skills could come in handy. Usually constructed by area snowboarders, one winding trail could help you meet a tree up close and personal, and the other track’s gnarly plunge is not for the faint of heart, either. So bring a change of underwear, but be warned, parks and recreation does not condone the activities here.
Oakwood Hills Eau Claire • There’s a great little
(unsupervised) hill near the Oakwood Hills Warming House on Golf Road. The hill is open Sat. and Sun. 1-6pm, and could be a pleasant alternative to some of the aforementioned and slightly more treacherous places.

PINEHURST HILL
Pinehurst Hill • On Eau Claire’s north side, the
behemoth Pinehurst Hill stands as the mother of all sledding hills. This formidable giant was a downhill ski run with a towrope throughout the early 70s. Be careful: if you don’t brake or turn, you’ll end up in a parking lot. Try not to hit anyone climbing up the hill, and pay attention so you don’t get hit yourself.
UWEC Campus Hill Eau Claire • Feeling adventur-
ous, or perhaps like getting flat-out arrested? It has long been rumored that the most exciting hill in Eau Claire is also one of the most rare. With the perfect conditions, “The Hill” shooting down from upper campus gets covered with freezing rain then snow and
becomes completely impassible. Mach 2 is potentially capable, but make sure to dodge the gate at the bottom... and the cops.
X-Hill Eau Claire • Just across the road from Chippewa Valley Airport’s runways, it’s a real treat when jets fly overhead, close enough that you can feel your chest rattle. A crisscross hill unofficially called the “X-Hill,” you can start at one of two steep, twin trajectories that cross each other at a wicked intersection before going off in any number of directions. This is never the same ride twice and the risk for some intense crashes is high. So if you are on the hill, consider yourself forewarned and, therefore, fair game.

REJECTION LETTERS FROM SANTA
colorful correspondence between area folks and the big, bearded guy BY ERIC RASMUSSEN
Hey Santa! Sorry if this is a little weird, but I’m in a bit of a bind. I had this super delish dinner last year during our Mexico vacation, and I got the recipe, which was in Spanish, if you can believe it, but I finally got it translated and I need a type of pepper called a “Pimenta Biquinho”? Have you ever heard of these? I checked Festival, Target, all the Gordy’s (even the one by Lake Wissota), and all of the bodegas. Woodman’s doesn’t even have them! Crazy! Thanks Santa,
Dear Santa Claus, Don’t get us wrong, we love all the new hotels. Big ones, little ones, downtown, out by the highway … But here’s our question: What about new motels? What about the little places with thrift store bedspreads and terrible shower pressure? And not only do folks love a nice wood-paneled room that smells a little like cigarettes, our guys need the work. The whole union is hurting. We’ve got families, too. Just a few motels. Thanks Santa,

–AREA MOM WHO NEEDS A REALLY SPECIFIC TYPE OF PEPPER
Dear Wood Panelers, Did you know that in some of these fancy new hotels I can charge my phone right from the nightstand? That’s unbelievable. The days of moving the dresser and having to unplug a lamp are long gone. I love a good motel, but I’m going to give you the thread count of the sheets in some of these new places to explain why I’m going to have to pass you by this year. 700. Sorry. Maybe you can wood-panel some Kwik Trips? We’ve got plenty of those.
Dear Area Mom WNARSTOP, I’m sure this dinner will be quite the fiesta, but we don’t normally deliver produce. We need to use the very limited greenhouse space up at the North Pole to keep the elves fed. Most of them have scurvy as it is. I’m positive you can grab a can of jalapeños and it will taste identical. Merry Christmas!

Hey Santa! This is so funny. You’re not going to believe this. I read the recipe wrong! I actually need pasilla peppers, which is the dried version of the chilaca pepper. Ha! Disaster averted! I understand you don’t deliver produce, so maybe you can bring a trendy place to get groceries downtown? Indoor market, food co-op, whatever. It doesn’t matter, as long as it carries literally every foodstuff humans have ever created, most of which I will pass by while saying, “Gross!” until I find the one thing I need, but then decide it’s too expensive and just get Subway for the family on my way home. SANTA CLAUS, CHILDLIKE WONDER, AND REINDEER POOP ON THE ROOF one father’s struggle with maintaining belief in the jolly old elf WORDS BY BJ HOLLARS / ILLUSTRATION BY SERENA WAGNER
T
here comes a time in every Santa-believer’s life when that believing hits a snag. Often the seeds of doubt are planted by way of schoolyard bullies, or dreamshattering friends, or one’s own late night sneak from a bedroom to catch a parent in the act. At some point geography always gets in the way (“That’s a lot of ground to cover!”), or zoology (“Reindeer can’t fly!”), or ethics (“What kind of labor laws protect those elves anyway?”). At some point, to be frank, it’s simply easier not to believe.
Yet when faced with my own “Doeshe-or-doesn’t-he?” dilemma, I was given a momentary reprieve from the truth. Though 8-year-old me had suffered the irreversible effects of watching The Simpsons Christmas special– including Bart Simpson’s claim to his rotund father that “there’s only one fat guy who brings us presents and his name ain’t Santa” – I was nevertheless certain that the fat guy was named Santa. While I understood there was much evidence to the contrary, I rebuffed all Santadoubters with a single,

inarguable line: “Haven’t you ever heard of Christmas magic?” My shaky case was buoyed a few weeks later when I waltzed past a television to catch a few minutes of what appeared to be a news program featuring “real footage” of Santa’s workshop in the North Pole. Today, I can find no record of this show, but if memory serves (and I doubt it does) it was hosted by an Ed Bradleytype—some reputable journalist whose face I’d come to recognize when glancing up from my Legos to glimpse the nightly news. For me, the footage (complete with
h
hazy, snow blown colored lights captured by way of helicopter) was proof that Santa was – as I always suspected – just another law-abiding (well, except for the breaking and entering) tax-paying citizen like the rest of us. The only differences: He lived forever, descended chimneys like a seasoned contortionist, and ignored all aviation regulations. As the years wore on, my case became shakier still. Despite the vast photographic evidence of his existence (who doesn’t have a picture with Santa?), it soon became clear that I was the last in the schoolyard still invoking “Christmas magic” as a defense. Since my classmates couldn’t get through to me with words they tried snowballs, flinging them toward my face and suggesting where I might shove my Christmas magic. Well, it wasn’t quite as traumatic as all that. Though for some, learning the truth about Santa is indeed traumatic, so much so that a handful of scholars have researched the conditions under which a parent might best break the news. WebMD notes that the key is in figuring out “how to convert the belief in Santa into other expressions of the holiday spirits,” though other websites offer a bit more “practical” advice, including the assurance that parents should simply relax and remain mum – sooner or later somebody’s spoilsport kid will break the news on your behalf. This may be true, but thankfully, the spoilsports’ argument rarely sticks when the victim is below the age of 5. According to University of Texas psychologist Jacqueline Woolley’s 2009 study, 5 is the peak age for believing in Santa. Soon after, however, this belief begins to decline, leaving parents with a difficult question: How many lies are we willing to tell to keep our children from the truth? While I have
much respect for those intensely-committed parents who take to their shovels to hurl reindeer poop on their roofs as “proof” of Santa’s having been there, I’ll admit that I’m not ready to go to those lengths. For me, Christmas magic becomes a little less magical when preserving it requires such orchestration. However, for those who enjoy orchestration, might I point you to the Official North Pole Mail’s Evidence Kit, whose contents includes “glasses, torn fabric, a coat button, a jingle bell, toy list, snowy footprints, and even reindeer tracks!” all at the low, low price of $19.99. It’s hard for me to imagine who buys such a kit, though I suppose it appeals most to parents who want their kids to believe that Santa lost a battle with the family schnauzer. Since we lack both schnauzer and evidence kit, my wife and I try to keep Christmas magic alive by other means. To that end, over Thanksgiving break last year we corralled our children back to our hometown so that they could enjoy what we always had – the annual Santa lighting. There, in the crowded streets of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a crowd 10,000 strong cheered mightily as 24,000 lights burst to life, reawakening the grand display featuring Santa and reindeer aglow on a building downtown. In the moments prior to the lighting, my then 3-year-old son ran into a middleaged Santa wandering the streets of Fort Wayne. Henry tugged on the fringe of that man’s Santa suit, and the man inside turned around. “Hi, Santa!” Henry called. The man – as if forgetting his attire – appeared puzzled by the encounter. “Hi Santa,” I repeated, shooting him the eyes. “Oh yeah, hey!” the man said. “Ho, ho. How’s it going? Or … Merry Christmas.” Henry took Santa’s greeting as an invitation to reiterate the entirety of his Christmas list, and thankfully, the man – who remembered the responsibilities that came with the suit – had the good sense to play along. Once Henry was through – once we’d released that man back into the night – my son held my hand and skipped us closer to the lights. “Dad,” he whispered, his eyes as wide as sugarplums. “I just saw Santa!” “I know,” I said, refusing his gaze. “I just saw him, too.” Hollars is a father of two, a writer, and a professor of English at UW-Eau Claire. GIVING THE GIFT OF LITERACY Give a Kid a Book program brightens season with reading BY TOM GIFFEY
T
he seasonal charitable effort by the Friends of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is summed up pretty well in its name: Give a Kid a Book. Of course, this program, now in its 22nd year, does more than give just a kid a book – it gives lots of kids books. Last year, Give a Kid a Book distributed more than 4,000 new books to children in need in the Eau Claire area, says chairwoman Nancy Sowls. The books go to kids in the community – from babies to teens – whose families are struggling to meet their basic needs and may be unable to buy them books at Christmas. The Friends of the Library distributes the volumes through a network of organizations, including the Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Community Table, and others. “The Friends of the Library feel that any time we can get a kid to read a book it helps them in school,” Sowls says. “It’s giving kids their own book. Having a book is something exciting.” The book that a child receives through Give a Kid a Book may be the only one he or she owns, making the program all the more important. Give a Kid a Book kicked off for the 2016 holiday season on Nov. 13. Now through mid-December, donors are encouraged to bring new children’s books to the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, 400 Eau Claire St., Eau Claire, where they can be left under the evergreen in the lobby. And if you see the perfect book on the shelf at Books a Million, 4030 Commonwealth Ave., you can buy it and donate it there: The bookstore collects books for the program
“... any time we can get a kid to read a book, it helps them in school. It’s giving kids their own book. Having a book is something exciting.” NANCY SOWLS, FRIENDS OF THE L .E . PHILLIPS MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY right at the register. Book donations are also accepted at UW-Eau Claire’s annual Holiday Concert (this year, that’s Sunday, Dec. 4) and come via Scholastic book sales at various local schools. The program will accept any kind of book for children, including board and cloth books for babies; fiction and nonfiction for elementary, middle, and high school readers; and special items such as bilingual books and audiobooks. The Friends of the Library also accepts cash donations to buy books. Give a Kid a Book is a great way to introduce your children to concepts such as generosity and charity. Have you children pick out new copies of their favorite books and donate them to the program; they’ll be thrilled to know that other kids just like them will be able to share the joy of reading at Christmas.
