au Claire husband-and-wife duo Anthony and Katie McMorran share a passion: the health and overall wellness of others. They own the newly expanded Tuning Tree Healing Services, located in the heart of Eau Claire on the corner of Barstow and Lake streets. Anthony and Katie began their business working out of their home. When their family began to expand, they knew they needed more space. “We had been wanting to open an office downtown as we both like and support the new energy and growth of the downtown area of Eau Claire, so when we found the space on Barstow, we took the plunge,” Katie says. Anthony has 30 years of therapy experience and specializes in myofascial release and yoga. “I’ve always had an impulse to improve myself and to be more aware and to understand my past,” he says. “And in engaging with that, discovered that a lot of other people have the same desire for wholeness and health and understanding.” Katie shares the sentiment: “I have always wanted to help people but wasn’t sure how.” She explains how she grew up in a physician family, but that route was not for her. Because of her own injuries, she became interested in and eventually licensed in physical therapy. In 2005, while living in Arizona, she explored different holistic practices including yoga, Chinese

medicine, shamanism, reiki, angel healing, and more. “I love it when I get to hold space for healing to occur from despair to hope with wounds that have impacted lives in both large and small ways,” Katie says. “(Such as) changing my outlook on life and helping others change theirs with renewed energy, love, excitement, and hope.” Since opening two years ago, the holistic healing facility has been offering massage therapy, life coaching, bodywork, and small-group mind, body, and soul classes. “We have hired other healers to join our team who have had interesting life experiences, who treat people through weaving traditional and holistic approaches, and who love to help others,” explains Katie. “The new teachers bring an authentic spirit to their classes, deep healing, and personal growth opportunities.” The 15 staff members’ résumés include reiki master, physical therapist, yoga teacher, massage therapist, life coach, Asian bodywork therapist, and more. “We can effectively treat pain and movement problems, soft tissue injury, postural issues, and injury,” Katie says. “We address stress-related and lifestyle issues that get in the way of people feeling their best.” Client reviews show Tuning Tree’s
positive impact. “A few years ago, I was looking for alternatives for dealing with ongoing back pain,” explains one client, Michelle Larson. “Both (Anthony and Katie) are very skilled massage therapists and they are great at offering tips and advice on self-care. Regular visits for a chronic issue have helped me to stay active. I also really enjoy both of them as yoga teachers! They are just lovely people who care about what they do and about other people. They’re just

the sweetest.” Tuning Tree celebrated the opening of their expanded studio on the last weekend in May. The expansion has allowed the business to add larger group classes. Sound healing, meditation, support circles, and boutique-style specialty yoga are at the top of the list. Guests are already impressed with the new space. “This new studio is up-leveling your space and healings,” one client shared with Katie.

Both owners continue their work to empower and help clients reach their full potential. “I’ve always believed at the very least you should be no trouble to others but the highest calling is to be of service to others,” Anthony says. Tuning Tree, 515 S. Barstow St., Suite 117, offers services and classes nearly every day, which can be booked online at tuningtree.com. ater this month, something brand-new is opening in the Haymarket Plaza that will target peoples’ well-being, both physically and mentally. The Well, 40 S. Barstow St., is a fitness center that will offer classes focused on getting people to work up a sweat and relax at the same time. The owner of The Well is Amy Erickson, who also owns Latitude 44 Yoga Studio downtown. Her desire to branch out and offer classes beyond yoga goes back to her childhood in St. Francis, Minnesota. “High-intensity fitness is something I grew up with as a tri-sport athlete

and have pursued along with yoga through my adult life as well,” Erickson explains. “Previous partnerships with existing businesses have fallen short of what I desired for not only myself and members of Latitude but also members of our community.” Erickson’s vision for The Well is simple: She wants people to come as they are for whatever reason they’re coming in for a class. Classes are highly modifiable, and Erickson is in the process of training 10 coaches who will be available to guide people through a workout that works with their body. “We are not here to judge you, compete with you, fix you, or tell you

that your bikini body isn’t up to par,” Erickson says. “What we are ARE here to do is empower you to challenge yourself, to have fun, to dig deeper, and to set a strong foundation for physical wellness, enabling you to build upon that into depths of mental wellness and beyond.” Erickson wants to help people who come to The Well with making their foundation strong enough to withstand all of life’s challenges. She and the coaches will help people feel good and strengthen their physical well-being. Classes at The Well will involve Erickson’s two passions: fitness and yoga. Workouts begin with yoga, followed by an intense core workout and then a high-intensity strength and cardio portion. Workouts conclude how they begin: with yoga. The high-
intensity part of the workout is done with a person’s own body weight along with various equipment such as free weights, box steps, pull-up bars, resistance bands, and slam balls. Classes are offered in both 60- and 45-minute formats. Amenities include four shower rooms, yoga mats, a drinking fountain, natural lighting, and cork flooring. The Well is set to have its grand opening on Monday, June 24, at 40 S. Barstow St., but people can already book classes and become a member at thewelleauclaire.com. A class schedule can also be found on the website along with membership pre-sale prices and information on how to prepare for the first class. You can also follow The Well on Twitter (@thewelleauclaire) or email Amy with any questions at amy@ thewelleauclaire.com. SUBMITTED PHOTO

AVOIDING COMMON RUNNING MISTAKES WO RDS:
A DA M
CONDI T

ou’re all fired up and ready to run! In fact, you might have a longer term goal you’re working towards and want to make this year your fittest year yet! Motivation is at an all-time high and you have daydreams of flying down the homestretch of your neighborhood with the city children whooping your name as they ride behind you on their bikes. But wait! Beware of the following common mistakes that beginning and experienced runners alike will fall prey to from time to time: 1. TO O MUC H TOO SOON Before you eat your raw eggs, pull up your grey sweatpants, and train hard like Rocky, be careful not to push your body beyond its limits. Running and exercising too much too soon can lead to injury, burnout, and lack of motivation later. Most running injuries stem from too much stress on the body, and everybody is different in the amount of pounding they can handle before they start to break down. Start by using
the “10 Percent Rule” where you don’t increase your weekly mileage by more than 10 percent from week to week. 2. GET T I NG ST U CK IN A RUT Change things up! Don’t think of yourself as only a “trail runner” or “marathon runner” or “non-competitive” or a “morning runner.” We all have our favorite parts of running, but changing up your common routine can help

freshen up your legs and your mind. You may LOVE running on the trail alone, but catching a group run on one of the Chippewa Valley’s paved bike trails might be a great change of pace. Some folks love to run the same races every year which can lead to the same training every year. Try to keep your body guessing by trying out a different distance or terrain. Treat running like

a house or apartment – changing up the furniture or layout sometimes gives you a new appreciation for the same space! 3 . N OT FUELI N G A FT ER T H E RUN Running is a stress on the body. We break our bodies down when we run. We are quite literally in worse shape after we run than before we run. What
H E

makes us better and more fit is everything that happens BETWEEN the runs. Sleep, nutrition, and recovery are key. Fueling your body with the right food and hydration within the first 30 minutes and during the next full meal are essential to putting your body in a position to benefit from the stress you put on it. Carry a bar, banana, shake, and/ or extra water if you’ll be finishing your run somewhere other than your house … or just end the run at your favorite burrito food truck! 4 . B U YI NG THE WRONG EQ U I PM E NT There are many reasons people buy different running shoes, socks, and gear. Some buy for fashion, some for support, some for comfort, and some buy for all of the above. Running shoes are tools, and you have to have the right tool for the right project. Just because a friend or training partner likes a particular brand or model doesn’t mean it will work for your training and foot. Having the wrong footwear can lead to discomfort or even injury; do yourself
a huge favor and have your walking AND running gait looked at by a local running store that specializes in shoe fittings and gait analysis. Your love of a particular shoe’s look or sale price will quickly fade when you don’t enjoy running or end up in the doctor’s office. 5 .
RUNNI NG
WIT HO U T
GOA L S Need motivation to move? First, write something down! Scheduling something either on the calendar, in the mirror, or in your journal can be a great motivator when you wouldn’t feel like running otherwise. This does NOT necessarily mean signing up for a race. For some, having an event or race on the calendar is what works to stay motivated, but for others having a more personal goal of self-care, happiness, weight loss, or having a healthy way to relieve stress can be what gets them out the door. Write it down. Look at it. Often. Then run!

FOUR HEALTH TIPS FOR MUSIC FEST SEASON WO R DS :
A
K I R K
G UNDER S O N
ttending local or regional music festivals is an annual tradition for many people and can be a fun time to reconnect with friends while enjoying great music. I have staffed many first aid tents at music festivals and helped attendees with a variety of medical issues over the years. Here are a few safety tips to remember so your music festival experience doesn’t end on a sour note:
1 . STAY H Y D RAT E D • Bring a reusable water bottle. At sweltering summer events, dehydration can creep up unexpectedly. Bringing your own water bottle is key to having the best experience possible. Most festivals have easily-accessible water filling stations. • Sip early and often. With your attention focused on the festival activities, it’s possible you will forget to drink water until you begin feeling thirsty. However, thirst is a sign that you’re already dehydrated, which is proven to dampen your mood and energy. • Check your urine. You should be using the restroom about every two hours if you are well-hydrated and your urine should be light yellow in color. If it’s a darker color, similar to apple juice, you need to consume more water. 2 . PR OTEC T YOUR SKIN • Apply sunscreen. Ultraviolet radiation is extreme during the summer, and it can take as little as 11 minutes in the midday sun to get sunburned. Choose a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating. • Find the shade. Many music festival venues lack shade. Do your best to find and remain in the shade between 10am and 4pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest. It will make a difference in keeping your
skin safe. • Wear a hat and sunglasses. Large, floppy hats can help protect your face from the sun. Protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them by wearing sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Even if the sun doesn’t bother your sight much, it’s still important to keep your eyes safe by protecting them from ultraviolet rays.
4. CONTROL CAMPFIRES • Keep things under control. Hopefully, the festival grounds provide fire rings or pits. If not, choose a location at least 15 feet from tent walls, shrubs, low-hanging branches, trees, or other flammable objects. Keep a
3 . MIND MEDI CAT IO NS & A LCO HO L • Remember your medications. Some festival-goers forget to bring along their prescription medications. You may not be able to fully enjoy the festival if you stop taking necessary medications. • Avoid mixing alcohol and medications. Alcohol can make some medications less effective or even useless. Mixing alcohol with some medications can cause issues you won’t want to deal with when you’re enjoying a festival including; nausea, vomiting, headaches, fainting, or loss of coordination. It also could put you at risk for internal bleeding, heart problems, and breathing difficulties. • Beware of over-the-counter pain relievers and sleeping medication. Drinking alcohol while taking ibuprofen can cause nausea, stomach bleeding and, possibly, liver damage. Sleep medications mixed with alcohol can cause increased drowsiness, difficulty breathing, and memory problems.

source of water, a bucket, and shovel nearby at all times for extinguishing. Don’t burn aerosol cans, pressurized containers, glass, or aluminum cans. When putting out the fire, pour lots of water on it to drown all embers, not just the glowing ones.
