S U M M E R S O I R E E ? Want to try something more interesting than a typical catered meal? Whether you’re planning a reunion, a graduation party, or even a wedding reception, a food truck offers a unique alternative to feed your guests. The nationwide food truck trend has blossomed in the Chippewa Valley in the last couple of years, and now there are more than a dozen mobile food operations in the area eager to serve up great eats and good memories. We asked a few food truck proprietors for tips on booking their services for private events. YOUR

EVENT?
Yes! As long as they’ve got the date free and you can pay the fee, a food truck is likely to come to your event. While some are now licensed to set up shop in certain parks and streets in the city of Eau Claire (more on that later), you’re still more likely to find them at private events. For Jim Davis, proprietor of David Dogs, that means doing a little of everything, from block parties to graduations to baptisms (as well as larger events, such as music festivals and UW-Eau Claire’s Homecoming).

“The food trucks, not just me, have started booming,” Davis says. “Mine has definitely boomed from last year to this year. I have turned down so many jobs.” He credits that growth to his easygoing nature and his 100-percent beef hot dogs. Whatever the reason, Davis is sometimes booked a year in advance: He’s already scheduled to serve up dogs at a wedding next summer! He advises to reserve a food truck far in advance: “To be honest, you have to call me in March to get the day you want,” he says. Otherwise, you’re taking your chances. …

Joy Falch, who operates The Marigold Mobile Cafe with her sister, Sue Miller, has also seen her business continue to grow as she enters her fourth season. And while her calendar starts filling up in January, there are always some open dates. If you want a food truck on short notice, try planning your event for a Sunday, she suggests. PREPARE

Davis Dogs, on the other hand, brings meal-sized hot dogs dressed in any way you can imagine, from Chicago-style to bacon-wrapped and deep-fried. Other food trucks in the Valley offer Mexican fare, barbecue, pizza, and even locally sourced gourmet burgers. KEEP

If you can’t bring a food truck to your party, why not bring your party to a food truck? Many of them post their daily
whereabouts online, particularly on Facebook. You may find them set up on private property or in some public parks. In addition, thanks to a recent change in the City of Eau Claire’s ordinance, you’re likely to see more of them around town. In May, the City Council cut food truck license fees, expanded hours of operation, and opened more areas to food trucks (particularly near brick-and-mortar restaurants, as long as those restaurants grant permission). “I think everyone is really going to go and give that a try,” Falch says of the new ordinance’s impact. “The city really did us a favor by re-looking at it and giving us the opportunity.”

BIRTHDAY
in just a few weeks, we can’t imagine a world without fireworks. What better way is there for a backyard pyromaniac to kick off the summer than to do a quick review of Wisconsin state pyrotechnic laws? With this info in mind, we can indulge in that habit with style and safety. COMING
UP
L O C A L - Eau Claire is home to some of the best fireworks displays in the Chippewa Valley. There are loads of secret hideouts where you can catch the lights and big booms from the Fourth of July display. You can see the Carson Park fireworks from Half Moon Beach, Lakeview Cemetery, Phoenix Park, and Mt. Simon. Nearby towns that will have fireworks in their Fourth of July shebangs include Altoona, Menomonie, and many others. But you don’t have to wait for Independence Day to enjoy some true blue American fireworks. Create your own fireworks displays with products purchased from licensed local retailers. Action Fireworks & Kites on 33rd Avenue in Eau Claire has a great selection of fireworks to choose from! You just need to remember which ones are legal under state and local law. Consumer fireworks – i.e., fireworks that are specifically allowed for consumer use under 167.10 of the Wisconsin Statutes – are as follows: cylinder fountains, cone fountains, sparklers (not containing magnesium, chlorate, or perchlorate), snakes (not containing mercury), small smoke device, smoke bombs, caps, noise makers, confetti poppers (that contain less than ¼ grain of the explosive mixture), and novelty devices that spin or move on the ground. These colorful and fiery products will wow your barbecue guests and keep all of that fun legal. According to the Eau Claire Code of Ordinances, under Title 9 – Public Peace, Morals & Welfare, fireworks are designated as explosives (9.28). To use any GET
fireworks larger than those previously listed, you must be outside Eau Claire city limits and have a permit. The hard and fast rule for fireworks in the state of Wisconsin is as follows: Anything that shoots up in the air or explodes into the air is illegal. S A F E - Fireworks liven up a party, but make sure to keep safety in mind. The National Council for Fireworks Safety has a collection of tips to keep firework spectators safe and in possession of all their appendages. • Know your local laws! Know where you can set off fireworks and which ones you can use. • Read the firework labels closely, know how they will act once lit. • Only adults should be permitted to light fireworks: children should never handle explosives. • Avoid drinking alcohol while handling fireworks. • Wear safety glasses! • Keep water nearby. • Keep your pets safe, too! Avoid bringing them to fireworks displays. Exposure to the sound can cause hearing damage and many of our furry and feathered friends are afraid or anxious around loud noises or fiery displays. GET

S U N S H I N E , it’s time to take the party outside. Which parties? All of them. The new River Prairie Park off Front Porch Place in Altoona offers seven outdoor locations to host weddings, graduation parties, retirement celebrations, anniversary get-togethers, corporate events and more. Kirsten Bube, director of sales at King Pin Management, works with clients to plan events in the garden, on the plaza, by the river, on stage, or in the amphitheater. “They all have their own look and feel and a certain touch,” Bube said of the outdoor locations. The Forever Gardens are located just outside the River Prairie Event Center, featuring a meandering stream landscaped with lush grass and ruffled irises. The Four Seasons Plaza boasts a danceable hardscape and a sculpture that can be illuminated with party-themed colors. The Amphitheatre overlooks the Eau Claire river, with lit retaining wall risers covered in thick emerald grass. For a more natural setting, The Bluff offers native ferns and greenery with a serene view of the river. More secret treasures are scattered throughout the park, waiting to be discovered by savvy party planners. “It’s fun to see (the venue) through other people’s eyes,” Bube said. People frequently call asking to reserve spaces that weren’t originally intended to be ceremony backdrops, and she happily obliges. “This whole park was developed on placemaking principles, and creating a place, a destination. In my opinion, they created a masterpiece,” said Roy Atkinson, management analyst for the City of AND

Altoona. River Prairie Park is central to the River Prairie development, which is home to an apartment complex, a hotel, restaurants, health care options, a grocery store, and more. Woven among the venues is a network of sidewalks and paths allowing people to navigate from location to location without having to leave the pedestrian trails. Altoona’s upcoming P10 festival will take advantage of the versatility and interconnectedness of River Prairie Park. The June 16 event will feature live music, food trucks, contests, classes, lectures, and performances. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy activities from a bird walk to a beer garden. The festival celebrates the spirit of placemaking with which the park was designed. “People are very very happy with what we’ve done with (the park) – it comes a lot from great guidance from our City Council members and from our city administrator,” Atkinson said. “For a long time it wasn’t developed out here, and then it just caught fire. It speaks volumes to the vision of our elected officials.” River Prairie Park has nearly 50 weddings booked for 2018, and is already booking for 2020. Weekend slots for weddings and other events are waning rapidly. However, choosing a weekday for an event can add special meaning, according to Bube. She has worked with couples who chose to host weekday celebrations to coincide with a special anniversary, or use a significant number. “Everyone has a unique story,” she said. And she wants to help tell it. For more information about River Prairie Park, visit riverprairiecenter.com.
