You’ve made the decision. The
adoption process has been started at your local humane association and you are days away from bring home a new member of your family! Pets take time to adjust to new homes, but there are things that we can do to help introduce animals into our family, especially if there are other pets involved in the process.
Tips for bringing a new cat home with another cat. While pre-
paring to bring home your new cat, it would be best to give him/her a separate space. Once your new cat is home and in its room, they’ll now be able to smell and hear the other cats in the home without being able to touch them. After two to three days, switch the cats so they are able to wander and smell each other better. This also allows your new cat to look around its new home. At this point, if there have been no signs of aggression, you may slowly start introducing the cats. You can do this by placing two baby gates in the door frame so they can now see each other, or by putting leashes on each cat and letting them see each other but keeping them from touching. Let the cats find each other, but don’t place them right in front of one another

and keep a close eye on them: One cat’s play signals may be misread by another cat as aggression. Keep in mind that they may not be best friends right away. It may take a month or more for them to be comfortable lying in a windowsill together, or you may find them curled up in your recliner in three weeks’ time.

Keep your resident dog’s schedule as close to his or her normal routine as possible. Feed the dogs at scheduled times and from separate bowls. It is best to keep them apart while feeding to avoid jealousy and food aggression. Always remain calm and assertive when introducing your new dog into the household. If you’re stressed or anxious, the dog may pick up on your emotions and become stressed and anxious themselves.
Pets take time to adjust to new homes, but there are things that we can do to help introduce animals into our family, especially if there are other pets involved in the process.
Tips for bringing a new dog home with another dog. Introduce your new family member into the home slowly. Supervise them any time they will be able to play or touch each other. You can leave leashes on them if you want the added control. It is best to separate them at night. While they play together they may play roughly. If you feel that they are being too rough, you should separate them immediately. PE T PROJ ECT 2019
Tips for introducing a new cat home with another dog. Keep the
pets separate for AT LEAST the first three or four days. While the pets are still separate, begin to feed them on opposite sides of a closed door. The idea is to teach them to associate the presence 34

of the other pet with pleasant things, such as food. When the pets can eat their food calmly right next to the door, begin face-to-face meetings. Keep the first few sessions short and calm. Keep the dog on a leash and let the cat come and go as she wishes. Repeat these faceto-face sessions daily, saving the pets’ favorite treats for when they are together. If the cat attempts to leave the room, allow her to do so, and do not let the dog chase her. When both animals appear to be getting along well, allow them to be loose in the room together, keeping the dog’s leash attached and dragging on the floor. Shelley Janke is executive director of the Eau Claire County Humane Association and an avid pet lover. The Eau Claire County Humane Association serves the area by sheltering and caring for homeless pets. Each year, more than 2,000 animals enter the shelter in search of their forever home. Shelley joined the Eau Claire County Humane Association in 2018 after serving her entire career in the non-profit sector. She grew up on a farm in western Wisconsin and in her spare time loves to hang out with her three children, husband Scott, and cat named Katie Cat.

Comfortably housed between chattering lovebirds and a skeptical-looking Grey Parrot nicknamed “The Professor,” a gentle
bird from another time sits and enjoys sporadic bursts of attention from the daily visitors to his domain. His name is Romeo and Tropic Waters Pet Center on Eau Claire’s south side has been his home for the last 20 years. A mainstay of the store, Romeo loves to greet people, and he usually lives up to his namesake, stealing the hearts of all who encounter him. As a green yellow-crowned Amazon, Romeo may not possess the flashy looks of a bright red or blue parrot of the

Caribbean, but his breed tends to be more gentle and affectionate than its more famous counterparts. And Romeo is famous in his own right, as visitors to Tropic Waters seem to love the aging mimic. There isn’t a specific record to confirm it, but his name tag claims he’s somewhere near 100 years old. While we doubt the Guinness Book of World Records will be knocking on his cage anytime soon (this kind of parrot isn’t known to grow quite that old), Romeo certainly has the demeanor of a bird that’s been around for many, many years. Despite his big beak and striking colors, Romeo’s gentle personality is some-
thing you immediately notice, and even when his cage door is opened, he seems to want nothing more than a soft touch to the head and a little affection. Romeo’s days of flight may be long past, and vision difficulties may make him appear less welcoming, but fear not: He’ll probably say hello at least once while you’re in his presence.

If you’re a pet owner, your pet is your world. And when that world
is shaken by an injury to your pet, you want to get them the best care possible to heal. Two businesses in the Chippewa Valley – Pets in Motion in Elk Mound, and Embrace Orthocare in Chippewa Falls – cater to pets (and their parents) who have a significant injury by offering custom-made braces and artificial limbs so those animals can heal properly and get back to their active, happy lives. Terry Kufner of Pets in Motion (E9898 County Road M, Elk Mound) has built human artificial limbs for a living. When people began asking him for help with their animals, he decided to make what he made for humans for those with four legs. Kufner says it takes him about three to four hours to make a brace and about 10 to 12 hours to make artificial limbs. He typically creates prosthetics for dogs, but he did make a leg for a goat once. Local veterinarians recommend Kufner’s services to pet owners who need help with their pet’s care. “Many people don’t go that route because of the cost,” Kufner said. “But I recommend the braces and artificial limbs as a strong option, and I will work with the owners with the cost of services.” He has crafted more than 200 braces, and really likes working with people and pets.
Embrace Orthocare (10688 State Highway 178, Chippewa Falls) is owned by husband-and-wife team Mike
Mike Antonson of Embrace Orthocare
and Sara Antonson. They have helped a variety of animals over the years. Mike, a certified orthotist for more than 30 years, began receiving calls from people asking if he made braces for animals. When the calls become more frequent, Mike decided to branch out and give it a try. After designing a brace that was very successful, it was an easy transition to start the business and help injured animals. As the interest grew, Sara came on board, and the couple is excited to grow the business together. Every type of animal has a chance at Embrace Orthocare. Sara says each brace Mike makes is custom-designed to each animal: “There have been many interesting cases, from pets needing carts due to a loss of limbs to a sheep that wasn’t able to stand on its front legs and needed stabilization.” Sara says they encourage pet owners to maintain communication with their veterinarians. She adds that an injury that is not addressed can cause other limbs to be compromised, so it’s important to get professional advice. Embrace Orthocare is more than happy to consult with local veterinarians as well. For more information about the services these businesses offer, check out Pets in Motion on Facebook (@ ElkMoundPetsInMotion) or by emailing petsinmotion@gmail.com. Wisconsin is known for belowfreezing temperatures, snow-
storms, and icy conditions throughout winter. Some dogs are all over it, while others need a little more help staying warm. What breeds are cold-hardy, and which should bundle up and brace themselves?
Let them loose!
1. Husky These quirky animals were literally bred for northern climates. Famous for their work as sled dogs, huskies have thick double-coats with soft, bouncy insulating fur under their guard hairs. They’re efficient – huskies eat less on average compared to other breeds when considering weight and activity level. Most of all, they (generally) LOVE the snow. Many husky owners know that when the ground is white, it will be much harder to haul their beloved pets inside.

2. Bernese Mountain Dog Bernese Mountain Dogs are another breed designed to withstand cold temperatures and get things done. The animals were developed to protect farms and drive herds in the Swiss Alps, even being used to pull carts on occasion. These friendly, family-loving dogs have thick, silky coats that keep their large (75-110 pounds!) frames toasty in the snow. 3. Samoyed These herding spitz dogs were bred in Siberia to hunt, and then herd, reindeer – I kid you not. Sammy’s are snow-white with extremely thick fur coats. They’re strong and quick on their feet, able to run endlessly. And what seems like a sweet smile is actually another cold-proof adaptation: Their mouth corners turn up to prevent drooling that would turn into icicles.
Bring ‘em inside!
1. Chihuahua Two big strikes for Chihuahuas are their tiny stature and their short fur. There’s not a lot of meat on their bones to keep them warm in cold weather. These little puppers are happier inside, or at least wearing some booties or a doggy coat. 2. Greyhound Greyhounds have very thin skin and fur – it’s perfect for regulating body heat after a summer run, but a big weakness in a white winter. When their core temperature drops, they send less blood flow to the extremities in order to prevent organ failure. Cold muscles are also more prone to injury, so it’s best to keep these sprinters warm. 3. Bulldogs Due to their short snouts, bulldogs should be kept indoors in the winter if at all possible. They don’t have a long enough nasal passage to warm air before it enters the lungs, leading to quick drops in core temperature. Their feet and bodies are poorly insulated as well, making them prone to frostbite.
