All of our photos (what decent ones we have) have frosted edges like a early ’80s Glamour Shots. And at the last minute the guy informed us he wouldn’t be able to shoot the reception due to his band getting a last-minute gig! Moral of the story, it one of the biggest moments in your life, so get a good photographer! I wore a beautiful black wedding gown, and we had a candlelight service in the evening at a church. I made the invitations, programs, thank you cards, wrote the music, and made the bouquets and a centerpiece for the head table. The service was beautiful. Some things that were absolutely worth the money for us were our photographer and planning to have an open bar. I wish we wouldn’t have spent so much on stationary products and spent more money on a videographer. Not having one is my biggest regret/mistake from my wedding day. We did a first look, and it was the most cherished moment of our day. Many people don’t realize how extremely busy you are the entire day, so spending that 10 minutes alone with my husband is my greatest memory.

" –BECCA JACOBSON were phenomenal. They are responsible for making the day’s atmosphere successful and for giving you something to remember the day for a lifetime. What wasn’t worth the money? My personal feeling is people spend too much trying to please other people. (On food, for example, we had pizza and it was one of our best decisions.) I kind of wish we had gotten a videographer in addition to the photographer. But even now I’m not 100 percent on the idea, for us personally we had more values in photos. It kills me that no one got my dad’s speech recorded. I’m not worried about any of the rest of the day, but that moment was important, and I didn’t plan for it.

H EATH ER RICH A RD S / EAU CLA IRE / I think people forget what it’s all about: It’s about the bride and groom, it’s not about impressing everyone else. Photography is always worth the money and you get what you pay for. My first wedding was all the stuff: We didn’t go crazy on the amount spent, but it was a traditional wedding and we had like 400-450 guests. I got married a year and a half ago in the middle of the Eau Claire County Forest with our immediate family and a good photographer. We spent about a week camping together afterwards, and I couldn’t have been happier with everything.

Planning a wedding is a huge creative undertaking. From decorations to dresses, a handful of people are responsible for planning one of the most important get-togethers two people will ever go to. It becomes that much harder to do so on a budget and in a region with limited resources for bridal supplies. LuAnn Hale discovered this when her daughter was married last August. “There’s not a lot of choices in Eau Claire,” she said, lamenting the loss of Younkers and Macy’s. She and her daughter, now Sarah Saldat, drove to Woodbury, Minnesota, to find a consignment store where they could save a bit of money on the dress. It was on the drive home that Sarah told her mother she should open a consignment shop a little closer to home. “It wasn’t a lot of planning, it was kind of a whim,” Hale, who owned a number of rubber stamp shops in town, said. She sold the stamping businesses and threw herself into opening Off the Rack. “I think there’s a big need for more options here, and this gives the girls a huge option because we have many styles, we have many price rang-

Hale loves searching through her inventory to suggest the best gown for the gal. “I love all the dresses,” she said. “If I could get married 350 times, I would wear them all.”

She recalls seeing mothers burst into tears of joy upon seeing the finished products, their legacies passed down to the girls they raised with renewed beauty. “That to me is my reward,” Barlow said. “My goal is to make it look like it hasn’t been altered; like it was made for them.” She’s been sewing since her childhood, when she made Barbie doll clothes on a treadle machine, and for the past 18 years she has operated an alteration shop out of her own home in Eau Claire. She works with a few SUBMITTED PHOTO other tailors, but saves the “fussy stuff,” as she calls it, for herself. New construction isn’t her game, but she hems, brings in, lets out, and alters bridesmaid dresses, suits, collars, shirts, pants, and gowns. Bridesmaid dresses are her favorite projects, with so many colors and styles coming through her shop. With a lifetime of experience, Barlow is full of advice for brides who need to stop for alterations on their way to the altar:

She points out that because most dresses are manufactured overseas, they run smaller than American sizes, and it’s completely normal to end up in a higher size than usual.

She has spent countless hours searching fabric stores, thrift shops, and more finding fabric to match a wedding gown that needed to be taken out. P L A N A H EA D ! While some alteration shops can take rush orders, giving tailors time to do a good job is kind to them and will put you at ease. Barlow

takes most of her orders several months ahead of the dates they are needed. F IN D TH E RIG H T TA ILOR . “Check out reviews, and make sure you’re comfortable with where you are and that the person knows what they’re doing,” Barlow said. Corsets, bras, shapewear, hoop skirts, and crinolines all change the shape of a dress, and the hem will need to be adjusted to suit a bride or bridesmaid’s shoes. K N OW W H AT YO U WA NT. When you come in with your gown, suit, or bridesmaid dress, know what you want done. “It helps for them to know what they want, because it isn’t my vision, it’s their vision,” Barlow said of wedding dresses in particular.

Sure, you can find photographers, florists, and caterers online, but wouldn’t it be nicer to meet them in person, especially without having to drive back and forth across Chippewa Valley? The annual Winter Wedding Fair in downtown Eau Claire is here to help. The fair, now in its third year, will be 11am to 3pm Sunday, Feb. 17, in The Halls at the Lismore Hotel, 333 Gibson St. The fair will feature two floors filled with dozens of wedding vendors, giving future brides and grooms – as well as their families and members of their wedding parties – a chance to meet and learn about photographers, dress retailers, venues, limousine services, bakers, caterers, and more. “The most important thing for brides and grooms at that event is they are able to meet with the actual service or product providers face-to-face,” said Lisa Gill of C&G Promotions, which puts on the Winter Wedding Fair. “A

wedding is one of the most personal events you will ever have, and when you start working with vendors you want to have a comfortable, personal relationship.” Good relationships are critical, especially in light of horror stories that Gill has heard about vendors hired online who fail to show up on the big day. In addition to meeting nearly 80 wedding service providers, visitors are invited to grab a “bride’s bag” at the door as well as a cocktail at the bar. There will be tours of the Lismore’s rooms and suites, bridal fashion shows, live music on both levels, limousines on site, and thousands of dollars worth of prizes – including a honeymoon package from Higgins Travel. And while fairs like this tend to draw a largely female crowd, Gill notes that grooms-to-be can get in free, which gives incentive for couples to attend together and make joint decisions about wedding vendors. “It truly is a one-stop shop,” Gill said of the fair. “There aren’t many products or services that we don’t showcase.”
