When it comes to marriage, there are laws. No, not the don’t-leave-the-toiletseat-up kind of laws: We mean actual legal requirements written in actual law books. To save you the trouble of dusting off your copy of the Wisconsin statutes, we – with the help of the Eau Claire County Clerk’s office – have compiled this list of must-dos and must-haves make the knot you tie legally binding. to the clerk’s office. If 1 Get you’re a Wisconsin resident getting married in the Badger State, you must apply at the County Clerk’s office in the county you (or your betrothed) has lived in for the past 30 days. If you’re not actually getting married in that county, don’t sweat it: The license is good anywhere in the state. And while both bride and groom have to apply in person, they don’t have to do so at the same time. addition. However, 2 Out-of-state if neither spouse-to-be has lived in Wisconsin for the past 30 days, the couple must apply in person in the county where they will be married. license expires. have expiration dates. You must apply for a license at least seven days – but not more than 35 days – before the wedding. The license will be issued five days later, and must be used within 30 days. your paperwork. To get 4 Gather your marriage license, you’ll need some other official documents, too. Here’s a checklist: A certified birth certificate, which you can get from the Register of Deeds office in the county where you were born. (Note: It has to be a certified copy, so hospital-issued certificates, faxed copies, photocopies, etc., won’t do.) Photo IDs for both people (driver’s license,

passport, school ID, etc.). Proof of current address of where you’ve lived for the past 30 days (driver’s license, lease, bank statement, bill, etc.). If you’ve been married before, you’ll need a signed and dated copy of the divorce decree or annulment from your previous marriage (or your late spouse’s death certificate). Also, you have to wait six months after you’re granted a divorce before you remarry.

5

Get your digits. You’ll need your Social Security number for the license application. (Pro tip: You should memorize this – and your anniversary date – to avoid problems later.) your details. To complete 6 Know the application, you’ll need the date of the wedding, where it will take place (both the city, village, or town as well as the church, facility, etc., where it will be held), and the officiant’s name and address.

some dough. The license 7 Bring costs $80, and (in Eau Claire County at least) they don’t accept out-of-state checks, credit cards, or bank cards. And if you get jilted at the altar, tough luck: The fee is nonrefundable. and Juliet beware. You 8 Romeo must be at least 16 years old to get married in Wisconsin. If you’re between 16 and 18 years old, you’ll need the consent of your parent or guardian. Sorry. Wisconsin hasn’t 9 Same-sex? caught up with the 19 other states (and the District of Columbia) that allow gay and lesbian couples to marry. You’ll have to settle for the state’s domestic partner registry (which provides 43 rights compared with the 200-plus that married couples get under state law) or traveling to one of Wisconsin’s neighbors – Minnesota, Iowa, or (as of June 1, 2014) Illinois – where same-sex nuptials are legal.

Would you clear these customs? Handfasting, the act of tying the bride’s and groom’s hands together, is an ancient Celtic custom that coined the phrase “tying the knot.”

The origin of giving a toast began in France, when a small piece of toast was literally dropped into the couple’s wine to ensure a healthy life.

During the Victorian era, the white dress was meant to symbolize purity, not virginity. The veil was meant to symbolize virginity.

The traditional Bedouin wedding dish involves cooked eggs stuffed in a fish, stuffed in a chicken, stuffed in a sheep, stuffed into a whole camel. Take that, Turducken.

In Romania, the musicians also function as guides through the wedding rituals and moderate any conflicts that may arise during what can be a long, alcohol-fueled party over a period of nearly 48 hours. Uninhibited kissing is more than encouraged in Swedish tradition. If the bride or groom steps out, guests line up for a turn to kiss the newlywed.

VolumeOne.org 32 Jan. 9, 2014

In India, the grooms’ shoes are the hub of mischief. While the groom’s family tries to guard his shoes (which he has removed for the ceremony), the bride’s family tries to steal them. If the robbery is a success, the bride’s family can name a price before giving them back.

Who can help you tie the knot? Three different kinds of people can conduct a ceremony – including one you’ve probably never CONSIDERED. The question “Who can conduct the ceremony?” is actually more complicated than you might think. Generally speaking, there are three different kinds of people who can do the hitching. Clergy member. If you go the traditional marriage route as a member of an established church or other religious entity, your minister, priest, rabbi, pastor, or other holy person can do the honors and sign the certificate. Things get a big more complicated when the religious officiant is from out of state; in that case, he or she needs a letter of sponsorship from an in-state church or denomination. And they get even more complicated if your religious officiant is nontraditional (for example, if he or she got ordained over the Internet). As the Eau Claire County Clerk’s office notes, there’s no statewide registration system for religious officiants, so it’s up for the couple to figure out if their officiant is legit. (Consulting with a lawyer may be necessary.) “Common sense needs to be exercised by the nontraditional marriage officiants,” the state Vital Records Office states in a memo to prospective brides and grooms. “They need to understand they are completing a legal document and it will be with

you, the couple, the rest of your lives.” Civil officiant. If you’re not interested in the religious route, you can be married by any judge (including a municipal court judge, a reserve judge, or a tribal judge) as well as by a court commissioner or family court commissioner. And if you’d like your ceremony to be imbued with all the romance the Eau Claire County Courthouse provides, contact family court commission Nathan Novak at (715) 839-6029. You can yourself! (Well, maybe.) In certain circumstances, a bride and groom can legally marry themselves – no need for a minister, judge, or anyone else in a robe. Under state law, a couple can do so “by mutual declarations that they take each other as husband and wife, in accordance with the customs, rules and regulations of any religious society, denomination or sect to which either of the parties may belong.” This is where it gets tricky: In an informational sheet, the Eau Claire County Clerk’s office notes that “there are very few religions or sects that allow this option.” And while no one will demand proof that a bride or groom belong to such a sect, the office reminds them that “it is illegal to provide false information in order to claim coverage under this provision.” In other words, be careful if you’re considering this unusual approach.

Starting out planning your wedding can be pretty intimidating. Choosing your themes, color schemes and “branding” will set the tone of the whole event. We sat down with Andra Christianson of Andra Delores Design to pick her brain about the process she uses to get started on designing for a wedding.

A MOOD BOARD FROM ANDRA DELORES DESIGN

5

STEPS TO MAKING YOUR WEDDING LOOK GREAT (AND PERSONALIZED)

WITH YOU. The first thing to do 1 isSTART figure out, well, what you want. This seems simple because it is. Sometimes it’s as easy as having a conversation with someone who doesn’t know you (your wedding planner or designer might be perfect for this) about where you met, what you do together, how your families are, etc. If you’re a couple of partiers, you probably aren’t going to want to use formal, scripty fonts and black and white, and if you like classic and fancy you probably don’t want bright colors and Comic Sans. (Well, actually no one wants Comic Sans.) FIND INSPIRATION. Christianson sug2 gests creating a “mood board” with

different colors, themes and textures that draw you in. Don’t stick to other weddings, either. Maybe you’re drawn to certain paintings or nature photographs or outfits that will say something about what you’re looking for. 2014. USE WHAT’S THERE. 3 IT’S There’s no way you’re planning a wedding and haven’t heard of Pinterest. The pinboard website is a great tool for compiling items and finding others lists and the open, visual presentation of it should help you pick things out.

CONNECTIONS (OR HAVE DON’T WORRY, THINGS CHANGE. 4 FIND OTHERS HELP). Take a look at your 5 Christenson said often brides and

mood boards and figure out what those connections are. This will give you a good basis to start planning. Connections can be in colors, textures, or even just moods. Again, sometimes it’s easiest to have someone else look for you – they may find something you would’ve completely missed.

grooms will come to her thinking they know exactly what they want, but once they start to go through the process they find an even better theme they had never thought of. It’s better to figure it out early than when you’re already halfway through all your planning.

HOW TO KEEP IT GREEN To keep with the ever-growing trend of being green and saving the environment (oh yeah, and just being a good citizen of the world), here’s some extreme tips for keeping your wedding environmentally-friendly, and some alternatives if you’re not such an intense tree hugger: Exchange dull, luster-less rings made out of wood. Or mud. ...or at least... Buy an antique, heirloom, or vintage ring. Incorporating such an item into your ceremony will also take care of the “something old” required by that traditional rhyme. Strut your bed-head right down that aisle proudly. ...or at least... Brides (and some grooms) usually need hairspray. But hairsprays and holding gels don’t have to be all aerosol and fumes. Organic lines of beauty products are becoming more common, and if you use them, the earth will personally indirectly thank you. Keep your tables naked, with a freefor-all to sit near the newlyweds. ...or at least... Reuse centerpieces in your household after the wedding, or

give them away as gifts. Swap cut flowers for potted plants, which last much longer. Or talk to your florist about locally sourced blooms. Fashion a dress out of olive leaves, Eve-style. ...or at least... Opt for “green” fabric. Dresses and suits made from hemp and organic cotton are sustainable and available at environmentally conscious online retailers. Also, the material itself is usually not too fancy – in other words, your attire may not be confined to onetime-wearability. Rely on word-of-mouth to invite your guests: it leaves no trace. ...or at least... Choose 100 percent postconsumer recycled papers for your invitations or save-the-date cards. Lots of texture and color options exist as these choices are becoming more popular.
