five important things you must tell your wedding guests to avoid confusion
THE BASICS ARE EASY: who, what, where, when, and WHY. But don’t forget to make sure your guests are prepared to celebrate with you by making sure all their questions are answered.
1. DRESS CODE
“Come as you are” really doesn’t give people an idea of what they should wear to your wedding. Indicate on your invitation or wedding website whether attendants should glam up to “formal,” if “semi-formal” will cut it, or if they can dress up their denim with a pair of nice shoes and call it good. Like for real, can they just throw on their dress Carhartts?
2. RSVP DEADLINE
Let your guests know when they need to let YOU know if they can make it. Put it in bold letters. Embellish it with gold foil. That’s the piece of information they’ll check whenever they remember up until the day comes they realize they might not have enough time to mail it to you!
3. PLUS
Do your guests get one? Don’t leave them guessing. Make sure to include a space for a plus one on your wedding invitations, if they are permitted.
4. WEDDING REGISTRY
This isn’t one for your invitations, but if you’ve got a wedding website, do include a link to where you are registered. Asking for money instead of gifts is NOT tacky, especially if you are planning on moving or honeymooning. Your wedding website is a great place to include this kind of information – or if you’d rather not receive gifts at all.
5. CONTACT INFORMATION
Whether you’re fielding questions about your big day yourself or if a family member has volunteered to direct traffic, make sure to provide guests with a way to get in touch for clarifications or questions.
Your food and drink decisions will help shape the your cocktail hour and reception. The classic, white, multi-tiered wedding cake still reigns supreme, but modern weddings are incorporating additional dessert options like cupcakes, donut walls, wedding pies, and more, so get creative! If you’re booking a venue without exclusive catering, your choice of caterer will likely the the second vendor you book. Full-service caterers can arrange plated meals, appetizers, buffets, carving stations, meal customization, beverages, and more in a variety of styles to fit your wedding goals. Caterers and bakers will of ten arrange tasting sessions at a small cost so you can sample and get the right vendor for you. A number of restaurants (some listed here) offer limited food delivery for receptions or your small party venue. Some caterers, and mobile bartenders, offer professional bar service if your venue doesn’t have a license.

WHEN YOU STEP INTO WILLIAMS DIAMOND CENTER IN EAU CLAIRE, don’t expect to be upsold on a ring that’s outside your price range. Don’t expect to find pieces that only conform to what some marketing executive thinks should be “in” this season.
Instead, expect to find a knowledgeable staff that will treat you like family, combining traditional Midwestern honesty and quality with a cutting-edge flair for design that will wow you on your wedding day – and far beyond.
“It’s very special to be part of a moment that they will have forever,” says store manager and jewelry designer Teva Dekel, who helps customers select – and even design – rings, pendants, and other pieces of jewelry that define the happiest events of their lives. “You really do fall in love with the people in front of you. You love their story.”
In his eight years at Williams Diamond Center, Teva has crafted nearly 900 custom jewelry pieces. When asked about his own style and inspirations, he demurs. “I think I’m more inspired by the people who come in, especially when I’m doing custom,” he says. “For me, it’s not always about my own aesthetics. It’s about falling in love with their aesthetics, and how they visualize their dream piece.”
He continues: “You really get to insert yourself in this moment of time for somebody that’s going to be bound to that ring or that pendant forever. So for me, it’s really about falling in love with the journey of my clients.”
Teva’s own journey included eight years working as a fashion designer in New York, Italy, and Israel. When he returned to his home state of Wisconsin, he became interested in studying gemology, and his stepmother suggested he visit Williams Diamond Center, where he met longtime owner Denise Wurtzel. She connected him with some friends in the business, who helped him obtain a scholarship
to receive training and certification through the Gemological Institute of America. When they crossed paths again later, Denise remember, “I though to myself, ‘I am a fool not to offer this man a job’ ” – and so she did.
These days, Teva is store manager, and Denise is easing into semiretirement. But her dedication to the business – which she joined in 1985 and purchased in 1997 – remains.
“We try and treat people like our family,” she says. “We actually do care, and I would rather care and lose a sale than just not care and get a sale.”
Consider, for example, her attitude toward expectations of how much customers are “supposed” to spend on engagement or wedding rings. “I always say, you’re supposed to spend what you can afford and works in your lifestyle, and we can find that for you,” Denise explains.
Rather than upselling customers, she adds, Williams tries to find value.
“I think if somebody says, ‘I have X amount of dollars,’ I’m a maximizer, which means I’m going to find you the biggest and the best I can for that price,” Teva says.
Williams Diamond Center has a not-sosecret weapon for buyers on a budget: a large stock of estate jewelry, all of it inspected to ensure quality. Some couples may choose estate pieces – or stones from these pieces – to use on their special day.
“It’s amazing how an estate diamond can really save you some money,” Teva says. Such jewelry isn’t less expensive because it’s of lower quality, but because the costs of mining, cutting, and shipping have already been taken into account.
When working with a client, Teva gets to know them and asks questions to determine their preferences. Do they like pear, marquis, or round stones? What colors do they love? Is their style traditional or contemporary?
“I have an advantage because I was a fashion designer before, so I really do pay attention to how people present in their clothing,” he says. “I can see the kind of jewelry they’re wearing, the color of gold they’re wearing in their ears, are they wearing diamonds studs, are they having a little classic diamond band on? All these things are like clues.”
With the help of customers’ preferences, an extensive inventory of his own creations, and his computer-aided design skills, Teva creates options for brides- and grooms-to-be in a back-and-forth process. Once designs are finalized, they are crafted by master goldsmiths in Louisiana and throughout the U.S.
“I believe he’s so successful with it because he’s a good listener,” Denise says. “I think that’s important. If you only want to interject what you offer, that’s not helping anybody.”
Williams will even help with a bit of coaching for men who are going to propose. “Some guys need a little bit of help,” Denise says with a laugh.
“ I’ve seen proposals happen in the store,” Teva shares. “At least we try to get it in a box, and say, ‘You take it and give it to her.’ You’ve got to create some romance!”

YOU’VE
AT JOHNNY’S ITALIAN STEAKHOUSE or stayed in the Holiday Inn on the Southside of Eau Claire, but did you know that there is a beautiful event space within that building?
Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse and Holiday Inn South have been hosting weddings and other small to large-scale events from that space for the last nine years, and they’re committed to giving guests the highest level of experience without breaking the bank.
Over the years, their well trained staff has helped plan an abundance of wedding ceremonies and receptions in their space and has taken so much stress off of many couples who get married there. Johnny’s gives couples an all-in-one wedding experience by offering the event space and the Holiday Inn in one convenient and beautiful location.
With everything in one place, Johnny’s takes on the bulk of the planning – and decorating – for you. Oftentimes newly engaged couples feel overwhelmed by the amount that needs to be done for their big day, but Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse will manage the process for you.
“We create a stress-free kind of wedding because you don’t have to worry about setting up your decorations and getting your catering to match the timing of the ceremony and reception,” said Holiday Inn’s Director of Sales, Teresa Connolly. “We handle it all internally.”
When booking your wedding with Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse and Holiday Inn South, the Sales Team will meet with you at the start to talk about your vision and get some preliminary planning done. About six months before your wedding there will be another meeting to discuss more precise details and then the last meeting ten days before the wedding to finalize everything. They will set up the event space for you on the day of the wedding and clean up everything for you when the day is done.
With your banquet hall reservation, Johnny’s supplies tables, chairs, linens, napkins, and more. You’ll receive a complimentary two-room suite, and room blocks for guests are provided at a discounted rate.
“We want to accommodate everyone,” Connolly said. “We want to make sure your vision comes to life.”

ANYONE WHO HAS EVER GOTTEN MARRIED –
heck, anyone who has ever even been to a wedding – knows there are countless colorful wedding traditions out there. Every culture and community has them, and Wisconsin is no exception. Forget “something borrowed, something blue,” though: Around here, the wedding colors are more likely to be camouflage or Packer green and gold, and the toast is more likely to be done with a plastic cup of Leinie’s than with champagne. Depending on your perspective, this list gives you a chance to other avoid Wisconsin wedding clichés or to revel in your Wisconsin pride.
1. AT THE WEDDING DANCE, A POLKA IS MANDATORY
Sure, the DJ’s playlist might otherwise be dominated by such timeless classics as “The Electric Slide” and “Baby Got Back,” but if you really want to get everyone on the dance floor, fire up the “Beer Barrel Polka.” Credit the dance’s popularity to the large share of Wisconsinites with Polish and German roots.
2. SO IS THE “CHICKEN DANCE”
Something about being around two lovebirds makes us shake our wings, wiggle our tails, and clap-clap-clap-clap. Either that, or it’s the beer. Yeah, it’s probably the beer.
Roughly half of Wisconsinites have some German ancestry, and it shows when the guest list – erm, beverage list – includes names like Leinenkugel and Miller. Beer is essen tial after (and sometimes even during!) a wedding. We’ve even seen a Catholic school cafe teria/banquet hall outfitted with beer taps (no kidding). Open bars are standard, as are personalized beer glasses for the wed ding party. In Wisconsin, having a “dry wedding” merely means there’s a tailgate party going on in the parking lot outside.
The ceremony ends at 3pm, and the reception doesn’t start until 6. Why? The usual explanation
is that the wedding party is being photographed. The real reason, of course, is the bride and groom’s post-wedding bar crawl.
In a religious wedding ceremony, couples are reminded to leave room in their marriage for God. But whether or not they’re religious, Wisconsin couples also have to leave some room for the Green Bay Packers. If the best man’s speech doesn’t reference the Pack, then the bridesmaids are probably clutching green and gold bouquets.
For the Wisconsin groom, there’s no need to choose between a love of hunting and the love of a beautiful woman. For a more subtle look, there’s always a camouflage vest or complementary blaze orange tie.
Camouflage attire is one thing, but you might also see somebody wearing bib overalls and a seed corn cap. Please forgive this fashion faux pas;
Uncle Frank probably just got done milking and didn’t have time to change out of his barn clothes.
Want some “alone time” with the bride or groom on the dance floor? Well, be prepared to pitch in a buck in this traditional Polish ritual. You’ll find dollar dances at weddings elsewhere, but they’re particularly common in Wisconsin where Polish heritage is strong.
Today’s Wisconsin brides must all be browsing the same Pinterest page for crafty ideas, because it appears Mason jars have taken over. Need vases, glasses, candleholders, or party favors? Just raid grandma’s cellar for supplies.
Winter weddings are a growing trend nationally, but we’ve been doing them for a long time in Wisconsin. Maybe it’s because we’re frugal (winter weddings tend to be less costly). Maybe it’s because snowy wedding photos are pretty. Or maybe it’s just because winter lasts six months here, so why not make the most of it?
WHEN BECKY DIXON MULLANE AND HER HUSBAND JIM were first scouting out land in the Chippewa Valley for their new orchard to call home, they were looking for rolling, lush land against a backdrop that would be as memorable as it was invigorating, and not just for their signature Champagne Apples.
“When we first saw the property we are now on, we thought, ‘We see weddings here,’ ” Becky recalled.
With more than 100 acres of land in Cadott, Wisconsin – just an afternoon drive through apple country outside of Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls – Dixon’s has grown to be a true destination with its apple orchard, wedding venue, and Dixon’s Autumn Harvest Winery. To match its three-strong business, the sprawling orchard and wedding venue includes three separate venues for couples to choose from.
The picturesque Pond/Island makes for fairytale-like moments, couples tying the knot on a little island across the water from guests in a serene, intimate portrait; its peaceful Woodland setting is cradled by overarching trees with unique wood benches and a trellis; and beauty in the Orchard is an unforgettable one, a large trellis with long rows of apple trees surrounding for a captivating scene.
While the Woodland venue is Dixon’s most popular, when couples choose to have their special day at Dixon’s, they get the entire property to themselves. While one venue will be the place to say “I Do”, people are free to roam to the other venues. “We always hear from couples how beautiful they found each venue, and they’re surprised when we tell them the entire property is open to them,” Becky said.
Dixon’s reception space comfortably seats up to 250 people, sprawling across 5,300 square feet, an open-air porch overlooking a
bonfire space while a separate bar and food area means space for everyone in the family to enjoy. Plus, a separate groom shack holds barstools and foosball to hangout at, while the bridal suite hosts a full salon inside for ultimate ease.
At Dixon’s, only one wedding is booked per day, allowing Becky and Jim to commit to assisting each couple and their guests.
“As a family operation, we put our heart and soul into each wedding. We care about each and every couple, and that’s another reason we love having just one wedding per day, so we can really focus on that one couple,” Becky explained.
With three wedding package options, couples are able to form the day of their dreams, even if it’s hosting just the ceremony or reception at Dixon’s, or choosing the Full Package. The Full Package
includes everything – and when Dixon’s says everything, they mean that. A ceremony and reception that includes a horse-drawn carriage and tractor-pulled wagon, full usage of the groom shack and bridal suite, privacy and ability to peruse the full property, and schedule a meeting with Becky and Jim prior to the wedding while they assist the day of.
While Dixon’s hidden-gem venue seems to transport people to a simpler, peaceful time, it offers couple’s the ability to completely craft their own vision for what decor and food they’d like. Not only is it a money-saver but it also gives full creativity to the couple.
“We’ve seen a wide array from pizza trucks, caterers, and people who do it all themselves; we see it all and want people to create exactly what they want,” Becky said.
Plus, Dixon’s Autumn Harvest Winery being just three miles from the venue means a close, quaint space to host bridal showers or rehearsal dinners, and couples who’d like the option of Dixon’s Autumn Harvest wine at their wedding are offered 20% off their wine order.
Becky recalls the joy of seeing families make a tradition of picking apples at the orchard together, year after year; groups chatting and laughing over wine at the winery or individuals settling in with a book and a glass; and being part of some of the happiest, warmest days of people’s lives at their weddings.
“We want Dixon’s to be a destination place, whether it’s for your wedding, to visit the apple orchard, or the winery,” she explained. “Our desire is for families and individuals from all backgrounds to come and truly enjoy their day in our space.”

Congratulations! Now let’s get to work and plan. Your wedding venue is probably the first vendor decision you’ll make. Here’s some tips to get started: DIY. Looking to bootstrap it? More power to you! Pick a venue with fewer amenities, then cover the rest yourself.
Indoor/Outdoor. The Outdoor venue list below features rustic venues like upscale barns, vineyards, orchards, gardens, etc. The Indoor list features hotels, event centers, golf courses, theaters, etc.
Package Deal. You might book your ceremony and reception at the same place, or separately to get your style just right. Many indoor venues also ofter outdoor ceremony locations, and outdoor venues offer covered reception areas.
Party Venue. Use this list for your bridal showers, bachelor/ette parties, rehearsal dinners, gift openings, etc. Some reception venues offer packages that include party space.
Capacity. A venue might have options to customize its space to fit your guest list. Coverage. Some venues take the work out by offering all of the services you could need. Others are more affordable and need to be supplemented with other vendors like catering, DJ, decor, etc.
Food & Drink. If a venue offers catering, it generally does so exclusively (not including cakes). If the venue doesn’t have bar service, be sure to ask what their liquor license status is. Generally, you or a caterer must do an open bar at a location without a license.
Lodging. If you have a lot of guests from out of town, consider a hotel or a destination outdoor venue with lodging.
Details. What kind of A/V support is available? Are tables and chairs included? Linens and tableware? What kind of decor is provided, and can I bring my own? To what degree do you help with planning & consultation? What optional addon services are available?

EC Pro Audio shares essential tips for PA systems at your wedding
– people often forget the importance of having the right equipment. While your venue may supply a couple of speakers and microphones for you, not all audio equipment is “one-size-fits-all” for your specific wedding needs. Owner of EC Pro Audio (ECPA), Zak Schweitzer, has over 15 years of live sound engineering and events experience and is sharing the things everyone should think about when renting or buying audio equipment for your wedding.
Speeches are a great way for those especially close to you to share their thoughts on your wedding day. Whether it’s your best friend sharing an embarrassing story or your little niece singing her favorite song, making sure you have the right kind of microphones and sound systems is extremely important.
First, you must figure out how many people will be speaking and what kinds of microphones would work best for each, according to Schweitzer. If you’d like your officiant to have a microphone, an over-ear or lapel microphone may be ideal if they are also carrying things, or holding onto their speeches. For speeches made at the reception, it may be best to have a handheld micro - phone that can be passed around.
Many people have never been taught how to properly use a microphone and this frequently causes distracting audio mishaps during an event.
Handheld microphones used for speeches must be in tight proximity to the speaker’s mouth for ideal performance - poor microphone technique results in low volume or conversely, loud feedback. Schweitzer suggests having a quick chat with anyone using a microphone on your wedding day so there is no confusion.
“No two events are the same,” Schweitzer said. “So these are all things an audio professional will be able to assist with and provide guidance to what will be best for your specific scenario.”
Is your wedding more rustic or off-the-grid? Wireless and battery-powered PA systems come in all shapes and sizes including single PA speakers for small weddings, full stereo line array systems for several hundred people, and wireless microphones for the reception. You can confidently and securely have all of your audio needs wherever your dream wedding is.
Aesthetics are arguably the most important things to think about for every wedding, so choosing a good sound system doesn’t mean having to give up your dream wedding look. ECPA offers both black and white sound systems, depending on your visual needs.
“We also never send out bigger systems than are needed, so your sound system will not only look good, it won’t take up as much visual real estate as sound systems of 20 years ago,” Schweitzer said. “Wireless microphones and battery-powered speakers can also be used to cut down on the mess of cables that can accompany large sound systems.”
No matter your route for reception entertainment, having reliable and clear sound systems is a must to ensure everyone has a great experience. According to Schweitzer, the biggest item to consider is what you want to be heard through the sound system.
If your reception is more casual with a jazz trio or string quartet, you may not need a large sound system, but if you’re wanting your guests to bust a move at your reception, you’ll most likely want a sound system to produce thumping bass and quality audio
for several hours. Don’t forget the extra microphones, cables, stands, and other items to facilitate the event.
Visit ecproaudio.com/weddings for more info and to download ECPA’s free Wedding Audio Essentials checklist. Leave your audio needs with the experts at ECPA who offer set-up, take-down, delivery, and engineering services to make sure your big day goes as smoothly as possible.

Flower arches, arrangements, bouquets, corsages, invitation design, table settings, tableware, and of course centerpieces are all ways to customize the look of your event to your style. Stationary designers can create design from invitations to place settings, yard signs, and thank you cards. Flower bouquets can complement your choice of bridesmaid dress or venue colors, and these professionals can help get the color just right. If your venue has a more DIY approach, or you want to add more decor to your event, we’ve listed some decor rental vendors to help with all the little odds and ends you’ll need, from pavilion tents to cutlery. And yes, of course, the centerpieces. All of these pieces together can help shape your event to your style be it elegant, modern, traditional, classic, rustic, minimalist, or all your own.
