Here at Volunteering Kirklees we realise that first step into volunteering can often be a confusing one. We’ve produced this easy to use step-by-step guide to get you on the right path 1/ Read through the rest of this guide. The FAQs on the next page will answer some of the basic questions you may have. Roles which involve working with vulnerable people (children, young people, people with disabilities & the elderly) often require a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check. The DBS check is a new process introduced in 2013 to replace the previous Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check. Action On Hearing Loss Org Details: Formerly known as the RNID, Action On Hearing Loss are working to reduce the impact hearing loss and tinnitus has on people’s lives, as well as provide information on how to look after your hearing. Featured Role:Befrienders – To reduce feelings of isolation & loneliness suffered by those with hearing loss. Befrienders are required to provide support and friendship. This involves helping with everyday activities such as trips out in the local community, as well as home visits. Support: Out of pocket expenses, training provided Commitment: Flexible – weekdays or weekends Location: Kirklees Other Roles: Fundraisers, Hear To Meet Volunteers, Information & Outreach Volunteers Age UK (Calderdale & Kirklees) Org Details: Providing older people with a variety of services, including information & advice, advocacy & support, day care & befriending. Featured Role:Social Media Marketing Volunteer - To help grow their new Trusted Traders directory they require a volunteer to promote this via social media such as Linked In, Facebook & Twitter. IT Skills essential, marketing or writing skills desirable. Featured Role:Classroom Assistant – Volunteers are required to provide support to team leaders in the delivery of learning engagement and support for services to learners (aged 16-25) on the Princes Trust Programme. The role will be based in the classroom and involves encouraging young people and acting as a positive role model. Each programme lasts for 12 weeks and covers team building, a residential (optional) working on a community project, progression routes and a team challenge. DBS check required. Better Future For The Blind Org Details: A befriending service for the visually impaired, aiming to reduce loneliness and isolation. Featured Role:Befrienders – Visit a visually impaired person once a week to provided companionship & friendship. DBS check required. Support: Induction training provided Location: Kirklees Other Roles: Activity Club Volunteers, Committee Member Canal & River Trust Org Details: Entrusted with the care of 2,000 miles of waterways in England & Wales, the trust works to inspire as many people as possible to connect with their canals & rivers. Featured Role:Huddersfield Broad Towpath Taskforce – Held on the second Friday of every month, the Towpath Taskforce is a drop in session (from 10am-3pm) for volunteers to help with tasks such as painting, weeding, cutting back vegetation, litter picking & general maintenance. Featured Role:Breast Cancer Awareness Ambassadors – Helping to distribute information in your local area, as well as contacting local businesses, encouraging them to support the ‘Join The Fight’ campaign. Support: Travel expenses paid, on the job training provided Commitment: Weekdays or Weekends Location: Kirklees Other Roles: Fundraising Campaign Volunteers, Kirklees Action Team Members, Shop Worker Carers Count Org Details: A brand new project to provide advice and information for adult carers who generously give their time & energy to look after a family member or friend who can’t manage on their own. As well as giving carers a voice, they also offer training and raise awareness of carers’ rights and issues. Featured Role:Carers Count Volunteer – An ideal opportunity for anyone looking to start a career in health and social care. A varied role, with duties including assisting with phone calls and other office based tasks, and to providing a listening ear for clients. There will also be opportunities to go out and visit carers in the local community, and in their own homes, to provide emotional and practical support. Citizens Online Org Details: A national charity set up to tackle the issue of digital inclusion – to make sure that everyone has access to the Internet & that individuals & communities alike understand the benefits of being online. Featured Role:Digital Champion – Volunteers needed to help out at events & sessions; showing people the basics of using a computer, helping them to access the Internet, setting up email accounts & general guidance. Support: Induction training provided Location: Kirklees Cloverleaf Advocacy Org Details: Cloverleaf help people to get their voice heard. Cloverleaf provides independent & confidential advocacy services for carers, older people, people with mental health needs, learning disabilities, physical & sensory impairments and people with brain injuries. Featured Role:Volunteer Befriender – To provide one-to-one support to vulnerable adults who are socially isolated. Support can be given in person, over the telephone or in a group setting in Huddersfield or Dewsbury. DBS check required. Support: Travel expenses provided. Induction and on-going training available Commitment: Flexible Location: Dewsbury & Huddersfield Library (10am Communities United Project Org Details: Working with under-resourced communities, helping them to set up & run sports & creative activities for young people. Featured Role:Sports Buddy -Supporting adults (including vulnerable adults) to access physical activity such as walking, sports, dance classes and swimming, as part of schemes to increase participation in sport. Each scheme lasts for 12 weeks, after which the aim is that participants will be able to continue unassisted. No experience needed, but must be reliable and trustworthy. DBS check required. Commitment: Weekdays or Weekends, part time Location: Kirklees Other Roles: Marketing Support Worker, Multisports Coaching Assistants, Office Worker, Playscheme Assistants,Trustees Community Service Volunteer (CSV) Org Details: Creating opportunities for people to take an active part in the life of their community. Featured Role:Social Care Volunteer – Ideal for volunteers wishing to gain experience in social or health care. Full time placements available. Support: Volunteers will be provided with free accommodation and £35 per week towards day-to-day expenses. Training available. Cool 2 Care Org Details: A not for profit organisation which specialises in recruiting, screening, training and placing individuals with children and young people with disabilities. Their trained volunteers give the children & young people the independence to enjoy an active and fulfilling life at home and in the community. Featured Role:Volunteer Befrienders –An enjoyable and rewarding role, which can involve anything from helping with creative activities in the home, to playing a game of football in the park or visiting the local swimming baths. Some young people will require more support than others – but Cool 2 Care will support volunteers and match you with a child or young person near to you, so you can fit visits around your other commitments & responsibilities. Support: Travel expenses only, training provided (free courses include listening & communication skills, working with children, disability and awareness) Commitment: Flexible, Weekdays or Weekends Location: Across Kirklees CRI ‘The Base’ Org Details: Working with at risk groups in society, empowering individuals to make positive changes in their lives. To achieve this, they provide access to training, education, employment opportunities & leisure activities. Featured Role:Young Person’s Substance Misuse Volunteer – Working with young people (ages 10-25), providing assistance & support, as well as maintaining records of clients. Monday – Fridays, ideally for a minimum of six months Location: Based in Huddersfield, but working throughout Kirklees Other: DBS check required Dark Horse Theatre Org Details: A national touring theatre company, producing plays that feature actors with learning disabilities. They provide training for disabled actors, work with writers and directors to improve their productions, and encourage further integration. Featured Role:Marketing Co-ordinator – Can you help spread the word about Dark Horse? Communication with targeted audiences regarding touring venues required, by email and phone, as well as working with Dark Horse’s Marketing Team to produce marketing materials. Helping people affected by EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) – a genetic disorder where the skin blisters and does not repair it. The organisation works to promote research into the cause, nature, treatment of EB & to relieve the physical & mental suffering amongst those suffering with EB. Featured Role:Shop Volunteers – Providing retail help in the organisation’s charity shops, serving customers & sorting stock. Location: Kirklees. They believe that physical or mental impairment should be no barrier to living or opportunity.They design, manufacture and modify everyday equipment to better suit the needs of disabled individuals. Featured Role:Collection Box Placer & Collector – Volunteer required to collect existing fundraising boxes on a regular basis, as well as to search for new locations across Kirklees. Current sites include local post offices, public houses and shops. Own transport desirable, but not essential. Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Org Details: Supporting life-limited children, young people & their families. They offer nursing care, practical help & emotional support to families at their purpose built hospice at Brackenhall to give a wide range of care, therapies & play activities. Featured Role:Administration Support – Offering support to the Hospice’s Community Fundraisers, duties will include making phone calls, typing, filing, handling cash and general admin. Support: Induction training & travel expenses provided. Commitment: Weekdays & Saturday daytime Location: Kirklees Other Roles: Event Assistants, Fundraiser, Retail Assistants, Volunteer Drivers Friend To Friend Org Details: A local charity offering a range of activities for older people including: arm chair exercise, mobility & walking groups, monthly meals, a men’s group, arts & crafts, local history and monthly get togethers. Support: Travel expenses can be provided for all roles, meal for some. Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust Org Details: Funding research into cancers affecting young people (ages 13-24) and providing support to the 38 hospitals admitting young cancer patients throughout the UK. Featured Role:Telephone Sales / Fundraiser – Based within the Fundraising department you will be responsible for making calls requesting support from organisations and individuals, information to update the Trust’s records and promoting the cause. Energy, enthusiasm and good communication skills essential.
