The Holiday Guide to Giving offers opportunities for you to make a difference in our community through donations of money, food, gifts, or your time and talent during the holiday season and beyond. This list is derived from non-profit and public agencies that serve Howard County. When you contact the agency, please mention that you found the opportunity through the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County’s Holiday Guide to Giving 2012. The agency listing is alphabetical. If you are interested in collecting food to help a family in need enjoy a special meal at holiday time, look for notations below agency requests indicating that they can identify such families. If you are interested in helping in a soup kitchen on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, the following agencies need volunteers. Please keep in mind that these organizations need help every day, and that opportunities to volunteer on these specific days fill up quickly. The Arc of Howard County Achieving full community life for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities — one person at a time. Twin or full-size mattress/box spring set with frame for our respite house; silent auction committee members; gift certificates to restaurants, museums, events and services; fax machines. Athelas Institute, Inc. Provides a variety of quality educational rehabilitative, residential and employment options for adults with developmental disabilities in a supportive environment to maximize opportunities for individual growth. We are in need of 150 turkeys for families along with non-perishable food and canned goods for our food pantry. We truly appreciate any size food donations. We are also in need of 3 flat screen televisions, exercise tapes (DVD or VHS) and 2 large stereo CD/radio players. There is a need for 3 Karaoke machines for therapeutic recreation at our day program sites. Volunteers are needed to help decorate group homes in December. Days End Farm Horse Rescue Ensuring quality care and treatment of horses through rehabilitation, humane education and community outreach since 1989. Plastic pitch forks, 20 gallon feed/water buckets, duct tape (silver, yellow, red, and green) Vet Wrap, working lawn mowers, weed wackers and a large tractor with bush hog. Volunteers are needed daily from 8am-5pm, Monday thru Sunday. Opportunities include barn chores, care of abused and neglected horses, farm tours, educational programs and maintenance/construction. Fidos For Freedom, Inc. The mission of this organization to strive to increase the quality of life and provide assistance dogs, service dogs (for people with mobility impairments), hearing dogs (for the deaf or hard of hearing), and therapy dogs (well trained personal pets of our volunteers for visitation in health care facilities). Fidos also provides community education on disability awareness through demonstrations and information booths at schools, churches and businesses. Donations are needed to pay for food, vet care expenses and equipment for our service dogs. Fidos For Freedom service dogs are trained to offer mobility assistance or hearing assistance for our clients with disabilities in the Baltimore/Washington area. To minimize costs, all training and care of the dogs is provided by our volunteers in their homes. However, it costs $2,500 per year for food and well vet care to support each dog. Typically our service dogs are in the training program for 2-3 years and we currently have about 25 dogs in various stages of training. g Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center Grassroots empowers people in crisis to make positive changes by offering professional 24-hour crisis intervention, shelter and outreach services. Gift cards to food stores, Target, Walmart, haircuts, pre-paid phone cards, gasoline cards, diapers (all sizes), pull-ups, baby wipes; pillows (new), twin size sheets, bath towels and wash cloths. Cleaning supplies — disinfectant, cleanser, laundry detergent, fabric softener sheets and bleach. Paper products — plates, bowls, cups for hot and cold drinks, plastic utensils, paper towels, napkins, foil wrap, food storage bags and food freezer bags. h Healthy Families A free and voluntary non-profit that works with first-time parents that are experiencing challenges and aligns them with community resources and offers them support in their new role as parents. The Holiday Project of the National Capital Area The Holiday Project of the National Capital Area organizes visits to people in nursing homes and hospitals in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. We bring the spirit of a holiday to those who would otherwise not have a celebration. The Holiday Project of the National Capital Area is currently in need of greeting cards and small personal care items (bottles of lotion, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.) that can be distributed to nursing home residents during the holiday season. Howard County Cat Club We believe that no cat deserves to be put to death because it is no longer wanted or in the way. We operate a free cat behavior hotline, advise feral colony caretakers and people who need to rehome their cats. We also shelter cats in a no-kill group home environment. We accept donations of PetCo gift cards, top-loading cat carriers, Fancy Feast canned food, Before Grain dry food, large cardboard scratching pads and clumping cat litter. Howard County Conservancy Our mission is to educate children and adults about our natural world, preserve the land and its legacy for future generations and model responsible stewardship of our environment. Howard County Public Schools, Office of Pupil Personnel Workers The mission of the Howard County Public School System is to ensure excellence in teaching and learning so that each student will participate responsibly in a diverse and changing world. The HCPSS Pupil Personnel Workers (PPWs) help ensure that many families in need receive food and clothing packages at holiday time. The HCPSS PPW Office requests: 1. Cash donations or gift cards (food and discount stores, e.g., Walmart, Target, grocery store, etc.) for low-income families. 2. Sponsors to “adopt� a family by providing food for a holiday meal and/or gifts. 3. Unwrapped, new holiday gifts of toys or clothing for children (newborn to age 12). k KidsPeace KidsPeace is a Foster Care and Community Programs agency. The mission of KidsPeace is to give hope, help, and healing to children, families and communities, and to help people in need transform their lives by providing emotional and physical healthcare and educational services in an atmosphere of teamwork, compassion and creativity. Donations are needed to provide care packages for all children placed in KidsPeace foster homes and for ongoing needs of the family. Care packages can be customized to include these items: blankets, journal/ coloring books, 2013 calendar, stuffed animal/toy, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, brush, comb, toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion, pillow, soap or body wash, socks, pens/pencils/crayons. Gift cards to Walmart, Target, food stores. There is also a need for donated gift cards that we can give foster families that promote healthy fun family activities such as gift cards for movies, restaurants, grocery stores. The Little Things for Cancer The Little Things for Cancer mission is to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caregivers. n NAMI Howard County Inc. The mission of NAMI Howard County, Inc. is to improve the lives of individuals and families living with mental illness through education, advocacy and support. NAMI Howard County provides various educational programs throughout the year that are offered free of charge to the participants, but incur expenses for printing materials for each class. Our courses, which are taught by trained facilitators, are Family-to-Family (12 week course to help families dealing with severe mental illnesses their relatives face); Peer-to-Peer (10 week course on the topic of recovery for any person with serious mental illness); NAMI Basics Education (6 week course specifically designed for parents and other primary caregivers of children and adolescents who are living with mental illness.) National Family Resiliency Center, Inc. National Family Resiliency Center, Inc. has provided comprehensive clinical and educational services to families for the past 26 years. NFRC is committed to helping children and adults preserve a sense of family, foster healthy relationships regardless of family configuration, and constructively adjust to change, especially during times of separation, divorce, remarriage and other family transitions. Holiday donations can be made in the form of grocery store gift cards for families who are experiencing financial difficulty over the holidays. Neighbor Ride Neighbor Ride enhances the health and quality of life for Howard County's seniors by providing affordable, volunteer-based supplemental transportation. Neighbor Ride is a volunteer-based nonprofit committed to helping Howard County seniors stay active and independent by providing transportation for medical appointments, social outings, religious services, fitness activities, educational pursuits, shopping and other personal needs. Volunteers are truly the “driving force” behind Neighbor Ride; and new drivers are especially needed now, as demand reaches all-time highs. Volunteering as a Neighbor Ride Driver is an incredibly flexible and rewarding service opportunity. Daytime, evening and weekend volunteers are needed and drivers may choose to provide rides that are convenient to their homes, offices and daily routines. No set schedule is required. Parents are also welcome to bring their children along when volunteering for a wonderful inter-generational experience. Clothing donations for men and women especially plus sizes; jewelry; bottles of perfume (may be slightly used); handbags, especially black; new undergarments for men (tees, briefs and boxers); new dress socks for men; queen-sized panty hose and knee highs in black and brown; male and female dress form; mirror; round racks; women’s shoes, especially size 8 and up; men’s shoes, especially size 11 and up. Therapeutic and Recreational Riding Center, Inc. Equine-facilitated therapy for riders with and without challenges, especially involved with Special Olympics Equestrian training for the State Summer Games, wounded soldiers, children and adults with specific developmental delays in an inclusive, bucolic environment. Snack table items for very hungry riders who are coming from school: hot/cold cups, packets of hot chocolate, cookies, pretzels, snack packages of crackers, napkins, plastic utensils, birthday cakes, which could be frozen, paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper, fruit for riders, apples and carrots for the equines. u Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults seeks to enhance lives by supporting, educating, and connecting young adults, and their loved ones, affected by cancer. For the fourth year, the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults will host a gift drive in the Baltimore City and Howard County communities to generate gifts for local young adult cancer patients and their families. Undergoing cancer treatment is physically, emotionally and financially draining. Often, the majority of family income is directed to medical expenses and families are forced to make difficult decisions on how to spend limited funds. The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, would like to try to alleviate the financial burden of purchasing holiday gifts. We are seeking donations of gifts from Friday, Nov 16 through Friday, Dec 14. Suggested gifts include: DVDs, handheld video games, magazines, art supplies, fleece blankets, robes, soft socks, restaurant gift cards, maid service, beanie\hats, gas gift cards, gifts for children ages 1-12. Howard County’s CASA Program - We train and supervise volunteers to be court appointed special advocates for abused/neglected foster children in Howard County, in an effort to ensure children have a safe and permanent home. Walters Art Museum Walters Art Museum brings art and people together for enjoyment, discovery and learning. We strive to create a place where people of every background can be touched by art. We are committed to exhibitions and programs that will strengthen and sustain our community. We seek coat room managers for each weekend until April, but especially during the holiday periods. Coat room managers are a key “face” of the museum and often create the visitor’s first and last impression. Coat room managers welcome visitors, check their coats and bags, issue wheelchairs and strollers, and keep the coat room organized. Coat room managers serve from 9:45am-5pm, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. We ask all volunteers to serve at least 12 days during the coat season. All volunteers should have good social skills and enjoy working with people of diverse ages and backgrounds. Each volunteer must pass a background check and complete a short training program. Training will be provided on Nov 10 at 9am-noon or Nov 17 at 9am-noon. Applications must be received no later than Nov 3, 2012. This volunteer assignment is suitable for 17-18 year old high school students interested in pursuing a career in the arts, humanities or hospitality industry, with preference given to those who have taken an art history course. Teens can earn community service hours and build workplace skills that can be added to a resume. Teens should call or email Marla Krogh to obtain an application package. Winter Growth Inc. Our mission is to assist health-impaired older and disabled adults to remain in the community, avoiding unwanted nursing home placements. All services are designed and provided to support independence, enhance self-esteem and promote the dignity of each individual. Come have fun with us at Winter Growth! Share you interests, talents, and skills to enrich the lives of our older adults! Sample activities include: arts/crafts, entertainment (music, magic, theatrical, etc.), play games read stories, group discussions, socializing, sing alongs, and manicures.
