AEC Hey, Vosters! Do you know that the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC or we often heard as MEA) will affect us, the young people, soon in the future? Seeing the “hot” competition is emerging right now in our market, are you guys ready for it? Let’s find out some Popcorn about AEC and Indonesia here!

“I think, AEC is an opportunity for Indonesia to develop more, especially to maximize its export. Well, we can say it's an opportunity to gain revenue.”

“From labor perspective, I don’t think Indonesia is ready for AEC. The current education in Indonesia is still in the lower level compare to other ASEAN countries. In addition, we still need to improve the human capital in order to compete in global scale.”

“Hmm, I see AEC as a challenge for Indonesians, who is not ready yet. “I think for a university like me, I will concern for I’m afraid that AEC will give bad side effect more than the good one the competition in working career as the foreignbecause of more competitive free trade in ASEAN. If people are not ers now have the same opportunity here.” ready, it’s just going to be another destruction rather than development.” “I think AEC has the good side effect especially for a rich-natural-resource-country like Indonesia. We can maximize the potential of our natural resource to do more export now.” “I think Indonesia is not ready to face AEC. The AEC itself is supposed to be an opportunity for Indonesia to be developed. However, seeing the current condition of the Indonesian, I don’t think it’s possible. We still do more import than export. In terms of price competition, we can’t defeat the foreigners. What’s good is that Indonesia can do partnership with other companies with international standards, so the local companies can be developed as well.” 3 | POPCORN

FIVE PEOPLE CONFIRMED DEAD AFTER CENTRAL ISTANBUL’S SUICIDE BOMB BLAST

Suicide bombing happened at Istiklal Cadessi in Istanbul, Turkish largest city. The bustling pedestrian street routinely frequented by shoppers and tourists was hit on March 19, 2016, on the mornings. So far, five people were killed and 36 others were injured. No group has claimed responsibility, however pro-government media stated that the attack is linked to Islamic State’s actions. Those series of bombings would affect Turkish economy. This year alone, three major explosions happened in both Istanbul and Ankara, the capital. On January this year, 12 were killed at Sultanahmed District, near the world-renowned Blue Mosque. Islamic State was behind the attack. A month later, 29 were killed in Ankara after a car bomb exploded during rush hour. ON EQUIPPING YOURSELF FOR AEC Dear youngsters, we believe that you all are aware of your potentials to face ASEAN Economic Community. Now what do you need to do to create bigger success in Southeast Asia? BY RANDY MULYANTO

5 | GLOBAL NEWS Source: bintang.com, international-careers.com, careerealism.com

Your ability to connect with international people will put you ahead ASEAN Economic Community is all about free labor market. That means people from various ASEAN member states will be able to work anywhere (in Southeast Asia, of course) they desire. Consequently, you will also meet people from different nationalities. To tackle these barriers, you might need to implement some basics on effective “cross-cultural communication”. Those include avoiding stereotypes, being able to distinguish your perspectives, also respect each and every difference your Southeast Asian friends may have. This should have been a no-brainer and you know how to implement those techniques, don’t you?

If you are great with languages, well, you are indeed a precious commodity There will be influx of workers from our country neighbors. You won’t like it if a Vietnamese or Cambodian or Malaysian (didn’t mean to discredit any country, really!) sales specialist takes your spot in your dream job in Indonesian company, only because your language skills do not match the par, right? Like, seriously, AEC is only established to push you to be the best version of you. One of the ways to endure the pressure is by perfecting your English or another language that you’d like to adopt. Learning a new language is never easy, but it shall distinguish which employee is entitled grade A and grade B- quality.

Being professional is still the rule You may work in any company in Southeast Asia, as early as 2016. Aim for the big ones, but you need to follow their codes. Your ability to be flexible with your surroundings will secure your place. Wherever you are employed, professionalism is the thing you shall not forget. Striving for excellence and being engaged actively are the universal ways. Want to work in foreign companies in hopes of better remunerations and facilities? Start these simple ways to get your path smoothly. Take an internship at one of the companies in your city, for instance. Or you might consider applying for organization in university to get the better picture on how structures function.

LESSONS FROM ASEAN: INDONESIA TO FACE

MALAYSIA

LAOS Although AEC officially began in 2016, Laos prepared itself from a year before. The country committed not to set any tariffs higher than 5 per cent from the beginning of 2015. Laos also created trade portal to increase transparency on trade-related governance. This program will end up with trade repository being finalized.

Malaysian government set 100 per cent income tax exemption for newly made or established companies. This is seen to be lucrative move as foreign investors will be more than likely to invest in Malaysia. To be eligible for the exemption program, these companies should broaden their business operations in not so developed areas of Malaysia.

CAMBODIA Cambodia is striving much harder to face the AEC. Cambodia tries to position itself to benefit from the integrated community. It is also added that the government is establishing reforms and necessary regulations in terms of tax, trade and investment to align with ASEAN. The country, until now, is still nurturing local talents and businesses to grow in quality to welcome the competitive era.

Filipino top-tier companies are being aware of AEC. One Filipino fast food chain established its international operations as far as 2004. This country with abundant oil resource is going to establish National Competition Law. In the meantime, this policy will end up prohibitive business operations that would not bring any benefit for both businesses and users.

Indonesia is obviously still in need to create bigger strength to face the integrated community. Luckily, Indonesia is actualizing its potentials to win the competition. Our government currently undergoes reforms on economy to minimize amount of constraints. We are also opening up Batam, Karimun and Bintan for foreign investors. However, we may learn good things that our neighbors accomplished, by learning their ways.

With the theme ‘Santa Fe’, Pop Up Market move the bow of the year 2012-2015 themed fashion district to creative district. Not only paying attention to fashion, but also to creativity, which scope is greater than fashion. Creativity has become the spotlight of the young people. They do not just dwell on the profession that once people are proud of. “Pop Up Market is a place for the local brand provides a showcase to the audience. This bazaar is the result of the creativity of students. So, when they give us an idea, we encourage them to implement it. Pop Up Market is different than other bazaar. Pop Up Market is giving an engagement between sellers and visitors, not just a trade and exhibition only. When hanging-out and business combined, the engagement becomes more powerful. Sixty percent of the AED market is in Indonesia, are we willing to let our market taken by outsiders? Indonesia has become a consumer champion, why does Indonesia not become a producer champion as well? The level of entrepreneurs in Indonesia should be improved. It becomes the task of, not only students Prasetya Mulya alone, but the society as well. - Rudy Handoko, Director of Undergraduate Programs, Prasetiya Business School
