This massive migration happens each year as part of Spring Festival to welcome Chinese New Year. In 2016, the festival is going to last for 40 days, starting from January 24. It is also considered the biggest migration worldwide that happened in a single year. A team of Higher Negotiation Committee (HNC), that represents Syrian opposition, arrived in Geneva to talk about resolution to Syria’s war. Farah Atassi, HNC member, said that the talk was not meant to be set with Syrian current government, however to discuss about the matter with United Nations officials. The high-level meeting officially began in February 1. UN Envoy to Syria and Swedish-Italian diplomat, Staffan de Mistura, addressed that the discussion will be difficult as well as complicated. Previously, Syrian opposition bloc unwillingly chose not to attend the talks, as the opposition demanded humanitarian aids for the civilians. The war in Syria is still happening since March 2011 that has killed at least 260,000 civilians and displaced millions of others to leave their country. Verona by Shanna Budihardjo

“Verona has more to offers than just love”

5 | TRAVEL

Verona, located in Veneto region of North–East Italy, just 30 minutes by train from Venice. Verona gains its fame from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet story where you can find a 14th-century house called Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s Home) who claimed to have the “Juliet’s balcony”. Every year, hundreds of thousands tourists visited this house to see the infamous balcony, hang lock-love, and rub Juliet’s right breast as a symbol of luck. You can also witness the gum wall, where visitors stick gummy candy to the wall and write their name on it, and endless sprawl of graffiti. That’s why Verona is really identical with love. During the Valentine’s Day, there will be a four-day Verona in Love Festival where tourist can find concert, art exhibition, and various themed activities. Luckily, Verona has more to offers than just love. The value of its historical building made Verona became one of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unfortunately, most of its Middle Ages building was destroyed during an earthquake on 1117. This lead to a massive rebuilding to a new architectural style called Romanesque architecture.

Piazza Delle Erbe Located near Casa di Giulietta, it’s claimed to be Italy’s most eye–popping square. It’s a market by day, and a photogenic square by night filled with outdoor cafes, beautiful fountain in the center, and Renaissance-era architecture building.

In this lovely month of Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, Vos+ will expose you about two of our inspirational women who have been acknowledged internationally. They are our own Sri

Mulyani and Anindya Kusuma Putri.

ANINDYA KUSUMA PUTRI WORDS BY SANAMIRA ALIAZAHRA

In an exclusive interview from Indonesian Pageants, Anin said, she has a hope that everyone in this world would have a positive thinking. Being kind and supportive is also a must. So, there will be no more of terrorism and war, only peace and love.

Being in top 15 of Miss Universe 2015 is not far from what she has worked hard on. She is not getting all of that instantly. It takes time and faith. Believe that she will achieve it, believe that the work hard will be finally paid off. The struggle she went through has shaped her.

The statement was proven by herself on one of her recent captions of her photo on her Instagram @anindyakputri. On that picture she is supporting her friend, the winner of Miss Universe 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach from The Philippines.

“Keep doing your best” is what she said in her

“Congratulations to Philippines! @piawurtzbach You make Asian proud! God and people trust you are a good example to inspire women and make a change in this world. All the best for your journey as Miss Universe 2015. Always be positive and keep moving forward because we have beautiful life beside Miss Universe.”

mind

The journey started from 2011, when she failed on Puteri Indonesia Jawa Tengah 2011. Instead of giving up, she motivated herself to enrich herself with many things. She believed that whenever she feels enough and achieves great things, it means that she gets trapped in the hole of failure. Four years later she applied again on Puteri Indonesia Jawa Tengah and made it as the winner of Puteri Indonesia 2015. She achieved such a great reward from many obstacles, long journey, hard learning process, commitment, discipline and a big dream. Even after she was crowned as Puteri Indonesia 2015, she is still eager to learn to give the best for Indonesia.”

From Miss Universe Pageant 2015, she learned a lot. Not only beauty, she also learned to have the diverse cultures, respect every country and be friends with them. SRI MULYANI:

MORE LEARNING AND MORE SHARING FOR BIGGER INDONESIA She is tactile, capable and influential. Those words represent Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Indonesia’s leading economist, the best. Let’s learn some leadership essences from one of the most successful Indonesian women abroad. WORDS BY RANDY MULYANTO Sri Mulyani Indrawati is known by the world as the current Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer for World Bank, the major global-scale financial institution, since June 2010. Forbes.com, the site of American business magazine Forbes, even dubbed her as the number two person of the World Bank. 9 | BE INSPIRED

On the other hand, Indonesians rever her as an icon that successfully reshaped Indonesian economy. During her years as coordinating minister of economic affairs and minister of finance, she was involved in some of the most dramatic reformations in Indonesian economy. She altered the nation’s corrupt tax administration system. The brand new taxation system itself generated more tax revenues that the government desperately needed during that time. She also steered the nation away from 2008 Financial Crisis. She is shining under the global spotlight.

“A LEADER SHALL NEVER STOP LEARNING AND SHARING.”

What can we learn from the 53-year old pride of Indonesia? Merdeka.com, Indonesia’s major online news portal, described Sri Mulyani as someone who is keen and eager to learn. Although she attained Ph.D in Economics from University of Illnois Urbana-Champaign, United States, in 1992, she has never quit learning. She regularly attends seminars in both Indonesia and United States. This time in the US, she tends to learn about international economics issues. She applies the people development concept really well, as she shares what she knows to solve economics problems in her country. She is often invited to be a speaker at various grand seminars. She regularly gives lectures and offers her knowledge to the wide audience. She was even invited by Jusuf Kalla, Indonesia’s Vice President on Working Cabinet term, to discuss about domestic matters under her tenure as director of World Bank. We certainly believe that a leader may change the world once the leader has the position and authority to do so. Sri Mulyani decided to create momentous effects on economy of the world by maintaining her position at the World Bank. However, being a global leader has its price, as one of those sacrifices is to be distant from one’s homeland. That might be the reason why Sri Mulyani didn’t return to her country to serve another 5-year term as government’s aide. She may have been planning to change Indonesia through World Bank, as she will fight for Indonesia too. Who will say no to her idea? Her treacherous journey to the top already inspired us to be a leader with a passion to create changes for our nation.

Chinese New Year Traditions by Sanamira Aliazahra

This year we have Monkey Year for the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, according to the Chinese calendar. What is behind the Monkey Year? Old people say that it is a very unlucky if a person was born in the Monkey Year and they have to wear read underwear for the day. That is only one small tradition during the Chinese New Year. What other things that should be in the Chinese New Year?

The Dragon Dance It is a very rare to see it in the regular day, but it is typical thing to see when we are in the Chinese New Year celebration. Everyone would really be amazed by how these people, which mean the dancers, to be dancing in such a costume. It is very hard, but they manage to make it really great, big appreciation for them. The Dragon Dance has two styles, the first one is the Southern Dragon Dance (ĺ?— ) and the second one is the Northern Dragon Dance (ĺŒ— ). The Southern Dragon Dance is named according to its originates place which is from the south of Yangtze River, while the Northern Dragon Dance was developed in the north of Yangtze River. They are very different from one to another, if the Southern Dance Dragon are emphasizes on momentum and strength, the Northern Dance Dragon emphasizes more on flexibility of its dancing moves. So, the material of its

dragon would not be the same too. The southern dragon is made of bamboo and paper, while the northern dragon is made with fluorescent material that would make the Northern dragon dances in a dark environment.

The Lion Dance

Hong Bao

The lion dance (Barongsai what we used to call it) is a very special performance on a big occasion, especially during the Spring Festival. They say it will bring good luck because the ancestor believed that a lion is an auspicious animal. The lion dance came from one of the oldest story. They said that long time ago it is very hard to see a lion or a Chinese dragon. It is as impossible, so they believed it as an animal, which only existed in myth. Nevertheless, before the Han Dynasty, only a few lions have reached China. People are so excited about the newly arrived lions as they mimicked the appearance and actions in performance. This performance became so popular and in the Tang Dynasty the lion dance was one of the court dances. Until now the lion dance become one of the performance we have to see during the Chinese New Year, which is a symbol to pray for good luck and now it is already spreading across the world.

When the Chinese New Year is coming, everyone gets very excited about it. Who does not? We get to see the lion and dragon dance performance, making and eat dumplings. However, the most anticipated during the Chinese New Year by the children are the Angpao (Hongbao). Yeah, everyone is waiting for it. We can get a lot of money from our family and relatives; we can even saving the money.

Do you realize that hongbao, as well as other decorations, in most of the times are in red color? Well, they said that Chinese people LOVE the red color. Red has the symbol of energy, happiness, and good luck. With that understanding, hongbao is believed to bring more happiness and blessing to the receivers.

Chinese New Year In Indonesia: Elements Of Happiness Chinese communities in Indonesia always welcome the brand new year with such excitement. These popular Chinese traditions are behind those cheerful faces. by Randy Mulyanto

Reunion Dinner

New Year Pictures

Those who celebrate Chinese New Year surely can’t miss Chinese New Year Eve’s dinner. A family and their relatives are present at the dinner. Dinners are done at homes, although a lot of families are having their special dinner at restaurants. No matter whether it is done at homes or restaurants, togetherness and sense of belonging within the families are amongst the most important to be celebrated.

Chinese New Year paintings are usually hanged on walls days before the new year. Some of those paintings depict women, babies and goldfish. Different styles of paintings exist in many parts of China, although those paintings are quite famous in Chinese-Indonesian communities. The drawings express messages that are desired to happen in the upcoming year. The New Year Pictures actually started during the reign of Tang Dynasty, year 618 to 907, to evict the evils. These paintings are now used to decorate the house, together with lanterns and various red-themed ornaments.

Red Packets Chinese communities and Indonesians are surely no longer a stranger to the word angpao. The older family member, usually those who are already married or even grandparents, passes hong bao or red envelope to younger ones and those who aren’t wed yet. The red envelope itself contains banknotes. Young generations obviously can’t wait to earn more money, right? Hong bao itself has philosophical terms, as the package is considered lucky money. Those who get the money will live a safe and prosperous life throughout that year. Parents who hand the red envelope have a wish that their children may be healthy and away from evil spirits. The unique thing is, the youngsters are somehow obliged to say “Kiong Hi” (Gong Xi in Mandarin, as of Gong Xi Fa Cai) before older people hand the envelopes.

Visits to Relatives Chinese families in Indonesia usually visit their older relatives’ homes. They come to see their relatives, greet them with “Kiong Hi” saying and spend some time with the older relatives. Doing this means to respect the older people. In return, older relatives give red packets to younger folks. However, older relative visiting younger ones is not something that must be done.

Dumplings

Food always plays a vital role during Chinese New Year. Take a look at the meanings of these foods to a great Lunar New Year celebration.

Five Plates to Chinese New Year by Randy Mulyanto

17 | CULTURE

Dumpling is undoubtedly considered one of Chinese culinary icons, and is still widely favored by Chinese Mainlanders. Dumpling appeared as early as 5th century. Throughout centuries, dumplings regain its popularity during Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. Jiao zi, how dumpling is named in Chinese, has deeper philosophical context. Chinese people believe that dumplings represent new hopes for the new year. Dumpling’s shape reminds Chinese of money, which hopefully may bring greater wealth once eaten. Stuffed meat inside the dumpling is some kind of symbolism. The Chinese are being auspicious for the brand new year.

Fish

It is common to have a whole fish for dinner at Chinese restaurants with your family. Having fish on the table is kind of a manner during New Year’s Eve dinner. Here’s the catch: Fish is related to prosperity. Yü or fish in Mandarin is pronounced the same way as yu, meaning prosperity in Chinese. To sum up, fish is seen as prosper. Yu also means having more things than basic necessities every year. The whole fish is usually steamed, added with ginger and soy sauce to strengthen the flavors. To follow the tradition, Chinese Mainlanders don’t eat the whole fish at one night. They leave some of the fish to eat tomorrow, as the leftover is seen as a mark of completeness.

Noodles

Orange

Rice Dumplings

For Chinese ethnics, noodle is seen to be the sign of longevity. Just take a look at how Chinese eat so-called “birthday noodles” once they grow a year older. It is expected that if a Chinese eats their noodles, they will create bigger success ahead. So does long noodles that depict the thought of longevity. Plus, it is also served uncut. These noodles, however, may be fried or boiled which it goes back to a Chinese family’s choice.

Ever heard of Mandarin oranges? The naming didn’t come off as random, but it’s because oranges are believed to bring luck and wealth for Chinese ethnics. The bright color of oranges comes up close with gold, meaning good luck.

These sticky and glutinous rice dumplings are called as tangyuan in southern part of the country and yuanxiao at the north. It is quite simple on how to make the dumpling wraps. Glutinous rice powder is being processed into the dough, then it is used to cover the stuffing each piece. The fillings tend to be much sweeter by having beans, nuts, fruits and brown sugar. In most places in China, those families have the sweet dumplings when it’s already Lunar Festival. The festival itself is held on the 15th day of first month of the year. Its round shape reflects harmony and unity in a family, as the family reunites.

Qi Pao Cheong Sam by Shanna Budihardjo

19 | CULTURE

The word Qipao or Choengsam comes from Canton accent in Guangdong province, China, means long dress in English. Choengsam is used in sountern part of China, while Qipao is used in the northern part, but both have the same meaning refer to traditional Mandarin gown. Originally Qipao was a wide and loose traditional Chinese female dress that only shows the head, hands, and tips of the toes. But it started to shift and change to a dress with stand collar, fitting waist, and right side opening, set off the beauty of woman figure. Legend said Qipao was first created by fisherwoman lived in Jingbo Lake who wanted to wear more practical dress that can make her move easily. She then married a young Machu emperor who ruled China after he dreamt about a lovely lady lived in Jingbo lake and wearing a Qipao would be his future queen. During Qing Dynasty, Qipao became popular among royal family’s ladies. Each pattern of the Qipao represents something, for instance, peonies represent prosperity and welfare, lotus flower represent beauty, dragon represent power, or fish represent luck Now, Qipao is no longer a tradition, it’s a vogue.
