10 SPRING/SUMMER 2018
How does it feel to be a silhouette in the spotlight? Brides tell me the truth about it all the time. As a makeup artist participating in wedding preparations, I’m always amazed when a bride slips into my chair and nervously shares – mere hours before her wedding ceremony – how she wishes she wasn’t the center of attention. The reality of wearing the most incredible gown of your life and all that goes with it – makeup, hair, jewelry, and uncomfortably high heels – can be overwhelming, even for the most confident bride. Butterflies often turn into buzzing bees that require tender words and a gentle hand of reassurance to calm the bride. Taking that final walk down the runway, with all eyes (and cameras) fixed, requires some deep breaths and a centered heart. Our spring/summer issue has much to say about the beauty of your day. Beginning with our stunning fashion editorial at Rassawek Vineyard, you’ll discover gowns that reflect the 2018 runway trends. Featured designs make dramatic statements throughout this charming venue. Inside, you’ll also learn about the new approach brides are taking with their selection of bridesmaid gowns. It’s no longer the dreaded decision that left some miserable. And don’t miss our preview of what designers presented on the New York bridal runways for the upcoming season. No doubt you’ll be inspired by many of the latest trends making brides the star. If you’re newly engaged, congratulations! We hope you enjoy the exciting months ahead, planning for your big day, and that you find some inspiration in these pages. It’s always a wonderful time to be a bride.
Your Wedding Is Our Next Masterpiece.

Lily Hecht-Leavitt & Anthony Schober
MAY 20, 2017 | FAMILY HOME, NORFOLK | DAVID SCHWARTZ PHOTOGRAPHY
Anthony Schober and Lily Hecht-Leavitt used the famous garden paintings of Monet as inspiration for their beautiful wedding. Lily wore a gown that featured a painted flower print. Anthony wore a tuxedo custom-made to match the blue of the hydrangeas. The happy couple danced their first song to “Moon River” as they overlooked the Lafayette River. Their advice for others planning their big day? Don’t sweat the small stuff. It will come together. And in the end, guests won’t know if something goes wrong. 12 SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Shelley S. Wong & Adam W. Park
SEPTEMBER 9, 2017 | THE HILTON VIRGINIA BEACH OCEANFRONT SHANNON MOFFIT PHOTOGRAPHY
A classic simple wedding was what Adam and Shelley (Wong) Park envisioned for their Virginia Beach nuptials. The two lawyers said their vows at Bayside Presbyterian Church and then celebrated their union at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront, surrounded by the colors of navy and white. Shelley’s gown was clean and classic, with a full skirt and plunging neckline. The bridesmaids were in floor-length ivory dresses. The night was full of fun and doughnuts (the couple loves them). Their advice for future couples? “Let it all roll off your back. Your wedding day will be the best day of your life no matter what.” 16 SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Melissa Johnson & William Webb SEPTEMBER 16, 2017 | MILITARY AVIATION MUSEUM DRAGON PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO
Aviation was the theme as pilots Melissa ( Johnson) Webb and William Webb said their vows. The two met in the Navy in Jacksonville, Florida, and knew that had to play a part in their special day. The ceremony was held on the tarmac at the Military Aviation Museum, Melissa in an ivory strapless with a sweetheart neckline and her maid of honor in navy blue. They wanted the night to be fun for everyone, and it was. Their advice for other couples? Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and take it all in. “It goes by quickly.” 20 SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Where Day Meets Night
STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH
Liven up your bridal beauty repertoire and make it beautiful, be it day or night. WEDDINGS ARE A TIME to reboot your beauty strategy, but often brides are unsure of where to start. At least six months out, begin assembling your beauty team and consider what’s most important: the state of your hair and face. For one of the most photographed days of your life, don’t rely on computer touch-ups. Set up a consultation in advance so you have a documented plan. And I would suggest you begin with this question: Are you a day bride or an evening bride? The time of day and the palette of colors trending will influence the direction of your makeup, according to Scarlet Byrd, owner of La Bella Chic Salon & Blow-Dry Bar in Chesapeake. “We encourage brides to bring photos of beauty inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram sites,” says Byrd. “Hair and makeup references give us a better visual on the direction a bride wants to go.” Equally important is seeing photos of the wedding gown. Shoulder and décolleté detail combined with wedding accessories will be important elements when considering your bridal beauty. 26 SPRING/SUMMER 2018

DAY WEDDING
Soft shimmers always add light to the eye. Primrose lace “Coretta” sheath by Amy Kuschel, detailed with Alencon and Chantilly lace ($1,550) from Silk Bridal Studio in Virginia Beach. Diamond and pearl earrings in 18-karat ($5,700). Pearl necklace, 18 inches ($1,680). Engagement ring 18-karat with 2-carat oval diamond and pave diamond sides ($32,400). All jewelry from Diamonds Direct.
For day brides, start by deciding on a focal point: Eyes or lips? For lips, embrace a palette that’s fresh and defined by natural tones, soft blush, and subtle contour with a lip color that shows off your perfect pout in a neutral hue. Byrd suggests starting with well-prepped, moisturized skin. Perfectly matched foundation and well-placed highlighter for natural radiance are key additions. A matte finish lip is the new option with gloss at a minimum. For eyes, choose a universally flattering eye shadow color in nudes and browns to make eyes brighter and wider. Soft shimmers always add light to the eye. Eyeliner looks softer in espresso brown, slightly smudged. Finish the look with wispier false lashes or individual clusters to add allure. According to Byrd, hair for this time of day looks beautiful bound in a fishtail or side braid, or full with loose curls and smaller braids intertwined for added texture. Use lace or fresh flowers for a final flourish. For a foolproof finish that lasts, set your makeup and hair with setting sprays. VOWBRIDE.COM 27
NIGHT WEDDING
Bridal etiquette requires that weddings 6 p.m. or later mean black tie or semi-formal. This signals the perfect time for your inner glamour to shine. According to Byrd, eyes get a bolder smoky look with darker shadows; a full set of false lashes adds pop. Contour and highlighting make a stronger presence as every aspect of the face takes on added dimension. When it comes to evening hair, Byrd suggests maintaining the texture; softly pull up the sides and back full of curls and twists. A messy bun with scattered crystals offers a standout updo without the usual tight, sleek approach. “For the bride to stand out, her bridesmaids should do the opposite hair design to complement her,” says Byrd. Braided ribbon embroidered “Faith” A-line gown by Claire Pettibone with silver Guipure lace straps ($2,100) from Silk Bridal Studio. Crystal floral barrettes ($18 each) from Nordstrom MacArthur Center in Norfolk. Diamond open square earrings ($5,700). Pave diamond bangle bracelet ($2,415) and the engagement ring 18-karat with 2-carat oval diamond and pave diamond sides ($32,400). All jewelry from Diamonds Direct.

The Beauty of All-in-One
STORY BY ALISON JOHNSON
More couples turn to multiuse locations to simplify weddings and maximize joy.
PUTTING TOGETHER the details of a wedding can feel like tackling a giant jigsaw puzzle. It can have you running all over town, fighting a nagging feeling that something will slip through the cracks. That’s why more couples are turning to all-in-one venues – places that offer everything from space for rehearsal dinners, ceremonies and receptions, to the food, drinks and guest rooms. These kinds of venues typically include onsite planners to coordinate details, such as tables, chairs, silverware, and linens. They can recommend florists, photographers, entertainers, and bakers. Some sites can host bridal luncheons, farewell brunches, spa retreats, golf outings, and other special events. Guests, meanwhile, can drink and dance for hours, and then walk back to their rooms. Cutting down on logistics and vendors helps keep the focus on a couple’s union, says Brittany Duarte, catering sales manager at the Founders Inn and Spa in Virginia Beach. “Everyone can enjoy the wedding weekend without traveling to different places.” Local brides and grooms have access to a wide range of such venues, some more well-known than others. Here are five spots to consider. 32 SPRING/SUMMER 2018
FORD’S COLONY COUNTRY CLUB This semi-private country club sits on 3,000 acres not far from Colonial Williamsburg and across the street from Marriott’s Manor Club at Ford’s Colony, a 276-room hotel. Couples can hold events beside a lake or in a pavilion, banquet room or formal dining room, with space to accommodate anywhere from 60 to more than 200 guests. The most popular venue is the Garden Pavilion, a climate-controlled space overlooking a golf course. The pavilion features floor-to-ceiling windows, an open floor plan, flowing white drapery, and string lights. For food, Ford’s Colony offers a choice of buffet or plated dinners. Between the country club and hotel, guests have access to golf, tennis, basketball, swimming, shuffleboard, horseshoes, bicycles, walking trails, and a children’s playground. In addition to standard hotel rooms, Marriott’s Manor has one- and twobedroom villas with kitchens, dining and sitting areas, fireplaces, and washer/dryers. 240 Fords Colony Drive, Williamsburg; (757) 258-4120 or FordsColonyCC.com. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FORD‘S COLONY
COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG While Colonial Williamsburg hosts mostly destination weddings, locals shouldn’t overlook its unique offerings. The landmark has 922 rooms in its five hotels and Colonial homes, with a huge variety of indoor and outdoor venues – from intimate rooms at the luxurious Williamsburg Inn to elaborate gardens at the Governor’s Palace to a ballroom at the Williamsburg Lodge that can hold up to 600 people. The location can host rehearsal dinners and other events at its restaurants or taverns, and it has a pastry chef who specializes in wedding cakes. A long list of optional extras includes Fife and Drums Corps escorts, horse and carriage rides, and appearances by historical interpreters – Thomas Jefferson toasting University of Virginia graduates, say, or the Marquis de Lafayette adding a French flair. And while bridesmaids might enjoy a relaxing spa treatment, groomsmen can opt for golf, musket range or even ax throwing outings. Guests receive discounts on hotel rooms and historic area tickets. The Sanderling features 120 guest rooms and five vacation homes, along with onsite catering services and a full-service spa. Ceremonies can take place at the beach, on an observation deck, or on an event lawn; the hotel’s various indoor and outdoor dinner and reception venues are equipped for gatherings of 25 to 180 people. Generally, couples and their guests have an ocean view during the ceremony and the Currituck Sound as a backdrop for the reception. The resort also specializes in elopement packages for 15 to 60 guests that include an officiant, appetizers, dinner, a champagne toast, and a two-tiered cake. In addition to the usual resort amenities, Sanderling guests can sign up for water activities, such as sunset and moonlight kayak adventures, surf lessons, jet ski rides, charter fishing expeditions, and dolphin tours. 1461 Duck Road, Duck, N.C.; (877) 300-0624 or Sanderling-Resort.com

SMITHFIELD STATION With an intimate waterfront setting that overlooks the Pagan River and its broad marshes, Smithfield Station caters to couples looking for smaller weddings. Families can rent out the entire 44-room hotel, which can accommodate as many as 25 guests for a lighthouse ceremony and 125 for a boardwalk ceremony in a waterfront gazebo. Dinner and reception space is available for between 60 and 125 guests, either in a private dining room or along the boardwalk. As an added perk, couples can stay in one of two suites inside the Light at Smithfield, an exact replica of a working Chesapeake Bay-style lighthouse; the topfloor room has a Jacuzzi tub and fireplace. Guests can take a boat trip from the marina, bike, swim or venture across the street to Windsor Castle Park, which has 4½ miles of walking trails. Gone are the days when bridesmaid dresses were little more than unattractive afterthoughts. Increasingly brides are shifting their fashion focus and taking their besties into consideration when choosing the perfect gown. Finding a tasteful option for your closest friends has become the new priority. The union of modern style and sexy inspiration offers today’s bridesmaids choices that mix and match color and approach. But finding the perfect dress for different body types can be a challenge. When Angela Krause chose her bridal party, she faced a dilemma: how to dress seven gorgeous women of completely different stature and size. While one gown might look stunning on some, it could leave others feeling self-conscious and unhappy. Not wanting them to resent spending money on a dress they hated, Krause opted to let each pick whichever style she wanted, as long as they chose the specific color (blush), fabric, and length. “They were so happy to show off their personalities with a unique style option, they sent pictures asking which look I thought was best,” she said. “I had a blast helping them.”

There is also a trend now of finding one dress with endless ways to wear it. For example, the company twobirds Bridesmaid offers one dress that features 15 ways to wrap it, a welcome freedom that allows it to be flattering for various body styles (short waist, full bust, wide hips, etc.). Elizabeth Rand, owner of Richmond’s Bella Bridesmaids, has even seen brides focus on designers and colors as the only unifying theme of their maids’ dresses. “Brides really want to be accommodating to their girls and get them in a dress they not only like, but might possibly wear again,” she said. For her summer wedding, Abbey Harr wanted her maids in the happy summer color of bright coral, but was mindful that when it came to choosing a style, having them feel beautiful was most important. “I liked the look of mismatched styles while keeping the continuity through color and fabric choices,” Harr said. “Everyone was able to incorporate their own style and chose a dress that complemented their figure.” For Harr, the best part was seeing how the variations made for more interesting photography. Most brides agree that it’s all about a day filled with beautiful memories. “If you’re surrounded by a joyful bridal party, it makes your special day even more wonderful,” Krause said.

Bowed Over STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH
“It all comes down to the raw materials being used and the inspiration behind it – the starting point to every piece of work. This is where the magic happens!” – BERTA BALILTI, BRIDAL DESIGNER 56 SPRING/SUMMER 2018
The looks for spring 2018 New York Bridal Fashion Week shifted from beautifully constructed traditional gowns – where lace and embroidery were the pervasive story – to sexy silhouettes that revealed far more than expected for today’s bride. Still, it was the surprising presence of darling details that captured all the attention: from feathers and 3-D flowers, to capes and sleeves, to plunging necklines, backs, and sides. From shoulders to hemlines, interpretations were fresh and innovative. But bows were the detail du jour and flattered so many gowns with their charm, be it on the shoulder, the waist, the back or the sleeves. This new spin on an old favorite was tied up and fastened on everything, including veils, headpieces, and shoes. The cape made a daring entrance in either full-length princess or capelet style in fresh interpretations, including pearl-trimmed tulle or billowy satin. And let’s not forget the presence of the proverbial bridal hue: blush. Almost every designer offered up at least one gown paying homage to the color. Yet another sign that today’s designers have been inspired to create gowns that are as varied and unique as the brides who wear them.
“This ‘Romantic’ collection is a combination of this moment and timeless. Smooth silk fabrics adorned with appliqués and delicate stones create a ‘jewel’ for the bride.” – INBAL DROR, BRIDAL DESIGNER
“You can be your own legend. Be your own bride.” – ROMONA KEVEZA, BRIDAL DESIGNER
“
The spotlight shines on drama. Silhouette, simplicity, and embellishment take center stage. The melding of exquisite fabrics brings it all to life.” – JUSTIN ALEXANDER, BRIDAL DESIGNER

Tell It With (Moving) Pictures STORY BY CINDY BUTLER FOCKE
VELL PRODUCTIONS VIDEO STILLS BY LO
THE FINAL SCENE IN THIS MOVIE features a couple holding hands as they leap into a swimming pool, dressed in full wedding attire. Music plays, and the crowd cheers as they embrace and kiss, soaking wet. Your typical movie happy ending, right? Not quite. This is a wedding video produced by Lovell Productions, the Hampton Roads-based firm that specializes in photos and videos of life’s special moments. This particular video captured key moments of the wedding for Chesapeake residents Angie and Matt Horton. “Epic” is how Angie Horton described the finished product. Not only do they have a 25-minute video of their special day, but also a 4½ minute version, which the Hortons call “The Trailer.” “Every year we watch our trailer and full video, and re-live our day,” she says. It’s pretty common for today’s wedding to include some form of video, especially with the proliferation of iPhones. But increasingly couples are investing in quality, high-end videos. Jim Ullian, owner of Distinctive Beach Weddings, says years ago people “would just set up a tripod and video the ceremony.” But times have changed and now people are opting to hire videographers who capture not just the vows, but the entire experience, using everything from multiple cameras to drones. The Hortons didn’t originally include a videographer in their wedding budget, but really wanted one after watching a friend’s video. Matt Horton learned about the gift when he read a letter from his bride-to-be while getting ready for their 58 SPRING/SUMMER 2018
Sandbridge beach wedding. That moment was caught on camera, along with more from behind the scenes, such as the bride getting ready, close-up shots of the wedding party’s matching Vans tennis shoes, and the bride and bridesmaids’ ride to the beach on a golf cart. Most of the audio in the “trailer” is music, interspersed with spoken words. Lovell Productions, owned by the husband-wife team of Justin and Sarah Lovell, started the Portsmouth-based company in 2011. Their business is 90 percent weddings, and they take on about 10 to 12 weddings a year, Sarah Lovell said. They’ve traveled to Hawaii, Thailand and other faraway places. Lovell said they get to know the bride and groom, so the finished product reflects “who they are as a couple.” They utilize two Canon C100 Mark II cameras. Justin Lovell and his camera hang with the groom and groomsmen pre-wedding, while his wife films the female entourage. Then they converge and shoot video for the rest of the day or evening. Packages run from $5,000 to $7,000 and include a shorter highlight film. They love the work, even if it does remind them of the missed opportunities of their own wedding. The couple did not video their own wedding. Sarah Lovell said she “would give anything to be able to go back and see – and even more importantly, hear – important moments like our vows and toasts.” Some wedding day memories become a blur for the bride and groom, and having a video helps preserve those precious and fleeting moments, she said.

The Eternal Flame
STORY BY JOSH SEABURG
M
arriage should be forever. So should your love for this tipple. For this stunning crowd-pleaser of a cocktail, combine all liquid ingredients and one sprig of rosemary in a tin. Shake very hard, and then strain into a chilled cocktail glass, or into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with the remaining rosemary sprig, and perhaps some candied cranberries. The sweet/tart flavors of the cranberry syrup combine with the acid of the lemon juice to perfectly balance the botanicals in the gin. The addition of herbs accents the botanicals even further. For an easier serve, scale the recipe up for as many servings as you'd like. Combine the ingredients in a punch bowl over the largest ice cubes possible, and cut with sparkling water to dilute. In this case, mineral water would be a great bet, as the slight salinity would help the rest of the flavors pop.
ETERNAL FLAME 2 ounces Botanist gin ¾ ounce cranberry simple syrup* ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice 2 sprigs rosemary (one for garnish) * To make cranberry simple syrup: Combine equal parts cranberries, sugar, and water by weight in a pot. Cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the cranberries begin to soften and lend their flavor into the syrup. When the berries are soft and the sugar is dissolved, remove from heat and allow to cool. Strain and bottle. Note: Adding 1 ounce per liter of high-proof vodka will extend the shelf life. 62 SPRING/SUMMER 2018
