Producing bridal editorials is really all about imagining the possibilities and making them happen. From conversations I’ve had with advertisers devoted to the world of nuptials, weddings can fall into the same category. Taking a blank canvas and composing a picture that is filled with beautiful flowers, memorable tablescapes, signature details and fabulous food is a definite form of magic, fueled by inspiration. Whether it’s for a magazine; or a real wedding, there’s an art to making it breathtaking and memorable.
wedding photographers in the world; Laura Kleinheinz, an awardwinning photojournalist published by some of the world’s leading news organizations; and Janie Medley, owner of the nationally acclaimed wedding blog The Bride’s Cafe. UNDER THE STARS. Magical, loving and accepting was the tone for David and Tim’s special day. After five years of dating, they decided to tie the knot at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, overlooking the spot where they first met, five years prior - to the exact date. David and Tim wore matching Hugo Boss black tuxedos, which required watching several YouTube “tie-tying” tutorials. The couple wanted to feel like everyone was included in the celebration, so they kept the mood relaxed, but elegant. Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour on the veranda, then sat at tables surrounding the ceremony. All white towering centerpieces consisting of lilies, roses, carnations and cherry blossoms added a sophisticated touch to the breath-taking views of the grand rotunda. The magical feel they were going for was topped off by a spectacular sunset and dancing under the stars. 14 vowbride.com

john best kept secret Jackie and John couldn’t have planned a more romantic day, filled with personal details from the unity ceremony painting to the hand-written notes at each place setting. Westover Plantation was the idyllic site for their “secret garden wedding, with the James River as the perfect backdrop for friends and family to witness the ceremony. The bride wore a Berta Bridal gown with dramatic details and feminine lines. Her bridesmaids wore striking champagnehued sequin dresses to compliment the picturesque surroundings. Blush roses and peonies, sprawling candle arrangements, antique lanterns and sequin table runners set the vintage chic tone to this already stunning venue. As a franchisee of Burger King, John convinced Jackie to try her first hamburger at their clever food truck before ending their unforgettable celebration with family and friends.

Making memories. Capturing moments. Immortalizing emotions.

Think about who’s there until the “happily ever after” send off and you’ll know the answer. We tip our tiaras to all the Image Makers who are making the difference and capturing the moments that matter. – Kim Wadsworth, Editor in Chief | Vow Bride

There’s an art to being a gentleman and behaving like one. What better time to start than as a groom. You have far more wedding responsibilities than merely showing up. Your involvement in the planning process; the food and music selection; and what you and your groomsmen wear are all important decisions that will make the difference. Once the time and location have been determined, you can define your wedding style accordingly. Whether you get married in a tuxedo, suit, or linen shirt and khakis, one thing is for certain: you will share the spotlight and be continually photographed so taking the extra time to attend to your appearance should be a welcome priority. vowbride.com 65

Where to start? Step up your workout routine; be mindful of what you are eating and drinking leading up to the big day; get plenty of rest; and plan to get groomed the week of the wedding. This includes a haircut, a professionally trimmed beard or shave, a facial, and a manicure (yes, people will ask to look at your ring as well.) Consider scheduling your dental cleaning close to the wedding day. If you’re into outdoor sports, wear sunscreen and be mindful of sunburns – there’s nothing worse than a overly flushed face, complete with hat and sunglass markings that even photoshop won’t correct.

Your sartorial skills don’t have to be extreme– use common sense when organizing your checklist of what you’ll need for the big day. As silly as it sounds, make certain everything you wear is new, right down to your underwear and socks– your partner certainly is! Whether you are renting or buying a tuxedo or suit, make certain you try on your tailored garments before you leave the store to be certain your measurements were correctly executed. Nothing is more frustrating than an ill-fitting jacket or trousers discovered hours before a wedding. Create a checklist of items you’ll be wearing and keep it with your wedding day attire so you don’t forget anything (like cufflinks from your parents, a new watch to mark the day, or lucky striped socks.) Loving eyes will be on you at the end of the aisle so look just as unforgettable. vowbride.com 67

he element of surprise is one of the most exciting parts of attending the Bridal Collections in New York twice a year. Big reveals of fresh interpretations by renown designers is a much-anticipated part of being a fashion editor. But even a front row seat at a massive runway show provides just so much detail as gowns sashay by. To my delight, collections this Spring were presented in a new light at a number of intimate settings including niche hotel ballrooms; designer showrooms and ateliers; photo studios; and roomy lofts. Claire Pettibone offered an Old West mise en scene that was all about Romantique, with a nod to pioneer style, vintage lace, and untamed romance. Models sat on bails of hay or walked amongst guests wearing cowboy hats while striking relaxed poses at a photo studio. At the Rockefeller Plaza penthouse atelier of Romona Keveza, gowns were presented one by one as the

designer herself described each gown, allowing editors to touch and admire favorites up close, while listening to personal commentary about her iconic fabrications. Anne Barge went chic and intimate in a tucked away ballroom at the Baccarat Hotel where models mixed with Proseccodrinking guests for up-close look-see peeks of her stunning beaded details. Anne moved from guest to guest to field questions and chat up her inspirational style. Austin Scarlett opened up his airy Greenwich Village apartment on Fifth Avenue where he shared his inspirations and parlayed with guests, making them all feel like the best of friends. At the Villard Mansion in the Palace Hotel, Israeli designer Galia Lahav presented her “Les Reves Bohemiens collection featuring fairytale elements, revealing fabrics, and extravagantly sexy styling, inviting gasps and non-stop photo ops. Kelly Faetanini was inspired by beauty and intelligence of the modern muse, presenting in the EZ Film Studio a collection that was flirty, charming and inventive, with blush feathered gowns a crowd favorite. vowbride.com 75

talent and a runway fashion event that was the talk of the town. Segments included Sweet Petite children’s fashions, American Heart Association Little Red Dress, Maids, Men and Moms, Pretty & Plus. Our grand finale did not disappoint, with entertainment supplied by Frank Sings Frank!, Astro Entertainment and SnackBar Jones. In March, our grand entrance at the Hampton Roads Convention Center couldn’t have been possible without the generous support of the City of Hampton, Boyer’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry, The Bridal Dish Williamsburg, Hampton Roads Event Rentals, Embassy Suites, and once again, our treasured sponsors including Style Events, Stage Right Lighting and Distinctive Event Rentals. Our brides were able to share their photo booth pictures across the internet at the Traveling Photo Booth; and Grand Prize drawings included a private plane charter to the Outer Banks of North Carolina thanks to Horizon Flight Center, Sanderling Resort and the Sea Ranch Resort, with jewelry provided by Madison Jewelers; and Boyer’s Diamond’s and Fine Jewelry. Feeding those near and dear to you on your wedding day is a big responsibility and can consume a large part of your budget. Finding a caterer that will create and execute a reception menu that reflects your taste and price range can be challenging. Asking the right questions long before the tastings begin is a great place to start. Editor Kim Wadsworth invited three of Tidewater’s premiere caterers– Louise Nagourney of Cuisine & Company; Cathy Carter of East Beach Catering; and Susan Byrne of Catering Concepts; along with ice sculpting expert Andrea Latham of Ice Art; to share their knowledge and experience in serving up some of the finest fare and culinary spreads in the area. Sharing breakfast– and inside tips– became the starter course of the day.

Where should a couple start when approaching a caterer? I like to start with a budget– it’s the biggest frustration. We customize all of our proposals and it helps to know their limits. Then we can create a menu for them. Louise Nagourney:
It’s nice to make it their wedding. Customizing it to make it theirs happens once we have a budget in place. Cathy Carter:
Yes, a catering budget has to be at the top of the list. We have to handle it all and need to know that there’s money enough to take care of it.
Susan Byrne:
Giving us a budget is essential before we can say how much an ice sculpture will cost.
Andrea Latham:

Once we have a budget, I like to guide couples about what foods to choose. They need to know that, for example, heavy hors d’oeuvres are not cheaper than serving a meal. They also need to know that, if they want great food, they have to lower the guest count in order to stay within their budget.
CC:
Arrange to make monthly payments. It’s so much easier than paying one big bill at the end.
LN:
KW: How involved should a caterer get in
the overall planning and execution of a reception beyond the food? AL:
Caterers know how to run the show.
We do it all. If something goes wrong at the reception, we have to have a plan to take care of it.
CC:
SB: We
just had a cake literally implode because the bride wanted it displayed outdoors when it was too hot and refused to listen. It became our problem and it’s something that could have been avoided if we were allowed to be more involved.
AL: An
ice pedestal cake stand would have helped!
The caterer is the last person standing. If anything goes wrong at a reception or is off kilter, it’s always our fault.
LN:
KW: Couples wants to “cut to the chase” and
sample their menu. When should a tasting be scheduled and who is included? They can schedule it once they settle on a menu and it is normally the couple and their parents- or whoever is paying for it.
LN:
CC: We
like to keep it to four people and charge for tastings. If they book us for the wedding, then we apply it to their catering fee. We suggest getting the proposal and menu set first before scheduling.
KW: What was one of the hardest lessons
you learned about working with food and serving others? SB: Trying to be everything to everybody– and killing ourselves in the process. We are all bleeding hearts with great ideas for our couples and then we “eat it.”
everything based on what’s in the contract. LN: Everything
has to be in writing and listed. We like to keep our client on the same page in terms of what we’re providing and detailed out.
We have to do 15-20 sculptures in a week so we’ve learned that there’s always room to add one more. We have a freezer. We’re good. AL:
KW: At the end of the day, everyone wants a
dazzling display and a memorable meal. How do you achieve that? LN: People need to remember what the event is about and
what the day represents. They also need to consider the facts of the day and the location they choose. If it’s an outdoor wedding and 95 degrees outside, things are going to happen. Keep in mind that items like ice sculptures look pretty but they really function to keep cold foods cold– especially outside in warm weather. AL:
SB: Timing is everything. We all have worked with coordinators that have no sense of time. When a schedule is set and food is involved, there’s not much wiggle room. If the planner forgets to tell you that four people are going to make a toast before dinner, that’s a problem. We’re serving food fresh out of the oven. It’s not like a hotel. AL: Offsite caterers have a totally different situation. They are setting up, hauling food, serving, packing everything back up, taking it away and returning it. It’s a really hard job.
People have no idea what it takes to make it incredible. You’re talking two days just to prepare for a wedding; a day doing the event; and then another day or more to get it all back in place.
CC:
We’re like a one-act play: we hit the road, then set the whole scene, do the play, then break it down– all in one night. SB:
CC:
I don’t do that any more. I deal with the facts and price

Anything served in a special dish. People love the Pommes Frites bar of hot fries served with special sauces and five different signature salts. A beverage favorite is the “make it yourself” juice bar where pureed fruit juices are paired with liquors, bubbly waters or sodas. Cathy Carter, East Beach Catering
We’re featuring anything that is presented with fresh eye appeal. We love using lots of fresh herbs, flavored oils and vinegars. Brides are definitely leaning towards Southern Virginia selections for a portion of their menus that reflect the location of their day. Louise Nagourney, Cuisine & Company
Plain and simple, ice carvings at weddings make people happy. Andrea Latham, Ice Art
Food truck-themed foods presented in mini dishes have been a fun food. Comfort food that refers to childhood favorites of our couples continues to offer a hint of yesteryear warmth, whimsy, and charm that everyone loves to include in their reception menu. Susan Byrne, Catering Concepts
