THE MARITIMES By Jonathan Gloutnay, Director of Coach Travel

Whenever I think of the Maritimes, one word immediately comes to mind: hospitality! The people there always make you feel welcome, and really treat you like you’re part of the family. For me, travelling is all about enjoying good food, having a good time, and discovering new places. And, believe me, when you visit the Maritimes, you are sure to enjoy all of this—and so much more.

THE GASPÉSIE My earliest vacation memory is of my visit to the Gaspésie. My family and I took off on a road trip to discover all of the small villages running along Route 132. I explored the banks of the St. Lawrence River and discovered Percé Rock, Bonaventure Island, the Northern Gannet, delectable seafood and lots of friendly people. When I got older, I went back to visit on several occasions. As an adult, I saw the place in a whole new light and was truly able to see all that the Gaspésie has to offer. Whether you love to explore the outdoors, enjoy some hiking or fishing, or learn a little history, the Gaspésie has got everything you are looking for.

NEW BRUNSWICK With so much to see, it’s hard to know where to begin. So, why not let the Acadians guide the way? Anywhere you go, you are bound to find someone who would be thrilled to show

20

Vacation & Leisure 2016-2017

you this little corner of the world. These folks are just oozing with passion for their province and history… plus, you’ll be completely charmed by their accent. There is simply no better way to immerse yourself in this atmosphere than to take part in the Tintamarre celebration in Caraquet and march through the village with the Acadians. Your visit would not be complete without stopping at the Village historique acadien, the Pays de la Sagouine, the Olivier Soapery and the Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park, to name a few.

NOVA SCOTIA Who would ever think about visiting the Maritimes without taking the time to discover Nova Scotia? Recently, I had the chance to go back for a wonderful two-week vacation. And, I have to say, I was completely swept away. I took the time to really get to know the area and adapt its pace to my own. There’s just so much to discover here: the ocean, the beautiful city of Halifax with its Citadel and the Titanic graves, the old city of Lunenburg (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the famous Peggy’s Cove lighthouse and, of course,

Cape Breton Island. I was enchanted by every little bit of it—as I’m sure you will be too.

MAGDALEN ISLANDS The archipelago of the Magdalen Islands is located approximately 215 km from the Gaspé Peninsula. Aptly nicknamed “the pearl of the Gulf of St. Lawrence,” it will seduce you with its 300 km of gorgeous white-sand beaches running along an ocean of the deepest blue. The coastline is a spectacular combination of bays, inlets, steep cliffs, endless dunes and, as you make your way inland, beautiful rolling green hills. The minute you set foot on these magnificent islands, you will feel the legendary hospitality its people are known for; you’ll feel like part of the family in no time. You’ll fall in love with their wonderful accent and unique way of expressing themselves—and, of course, that joie de vivre that we’ve come to associate with the Acadian people. So, what are you waiting for? There is so much for you to discover in the Maritimes! Just choose one of these four fantastic regions, and get planning.

Few places in the world can boast the combination of nature, urban vibe and architecture that Toronto can. Every year, thousands of tourists make their way to this great city teeming with activity—and, of course, known for being very safe! Dedicated to becoming the most sustainable city in North America, Toronto is a nature-lover’s paradise replete with 10 million trees, huge parks and natural areas all the way from Don River on the east side to Humber River on the west. Strolling through the city has never been so refreshing and invigorating! Make your way down Yonge Street—recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as being the longest street in the world—stretching a total of 1,861 km from north to south! Explore the financial district and stop in at various antique shops, boutiques and furniture stores in the trendy Rosedale and Dabvisville neighbourhoods just north of Bloor Street.

Toronto also has a cool, edgy side that comes to life in the Distillery District—this superb little corner of the city is rich with history… and also offers an amazing variety of places where you can “quench your thirst!” Pastry shops, cafés, bars and restaurants abound in the heritage buildings of a former whiskey distillery. The chic, cosmopolitan feel and cultural diversity make you feel like you’ve taken a trip around the world. The Hockey Hall of Fame, the Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, the Bata Shoe Museum, Ripley’s Aquarium and the must-see CN Tower are just some of the City’s major attractions. NEW YORK... REVISITED By Serge H. Malaison, Tour Guide

again and discover something new every single time. New York is consistently charming no matter what time of year you visit—spring, summer, fall and winter are all equally glorious in these surroundings. Although it is renowned for the bustling streets of Times Square and Broadway, New York has so much more to discover. The gorgeous streets of SoHo, the quaint restaurants and mythical bars of Greenwich Village, the cool, hip bars of the Meatpacking District, the “new Brooklyn” with its restaurants and art galleries, etc. Let me take you on a journey of discovery with Gendrontours three and four-day packages as we travel to New York by coach bus. You’ll quickly understand why I love this city so much, and why I always love going back. Care to join me?

© Nathalie Dorr

New York… forever magical and mysterious. The City that never sleeps… and a city that I absolutely adore! It was this vision of New York that won me over when I first visited 20 years ago. I guess you could say that New York is to North America what Paris is to Europe. A city buzzing with activity and travellers who have come from far and wide to finally experience what they have long been waiting for: to set off on the adventure of a lifetime as they explore the City’s busy streets, not to mention the charming neighbourhoods that make New York one of the best travel destinations in the world. I’ve been lucky enough to work and live in this incredible city, to find love there (and have my heart broken!)—and to explore every last inch of it along the way. I have become well acquainted with the Big Apple, and it’s always a thrill to be able to share it with my friends and passengers. It gives me a chance to see it all

The skyline: The Top of the Rock, an observation deck located on the 68th, 69th and 70th floors of Rockefeller Center, is the perfect place to enjoy a 360-degree view of the New York City skyline. Thousands of skyscrapers intermingled with green spaces and some 100 bridges form the backdrop of this actionpacked metropolis. A second great option is the One World Observatory—an experience that kicks off with a 72-second elevator ride all the way to the 102nd Floor of the tower.

Green spaces: With over 113 km2 of park space, New York

is much greener than people tend to think. The most famous of all these green spaces is, of course, Central Park. Battery Park, located on the southern tip of the Island, is also fabulous and has an excellent observation deck on the Statue of Liberty. Bryant Park, 3.9 hectares at the heart of the financial district, is always busy and still within walking distance from Times Square and the theatres. The High Line is a public park built on a historic 2.5-km freight rail line elevated above the streets on the Lower West Side. They’re all just waiting to be discovered!

Neighbourhoods: The boroughs surrounding Manhattan also have lots to offer! A little less touristy, these areas let New York’s true culture shine through. Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are alive with artists, cafés, bars and one-of-kind shops. Boasting a rich history, these neighbourhoods should definitely be part of your must-visit list. Broadway: This famous street runs 21 km and is the oldest north–south thoroughfare on the Island, dating back to pre-colonial times. It is also the most-visited street in all of New York. The theatre… off of Times Square, Broadway and a few adjacent streets form the Theater District, where you’ll find over 40 professional theatres. This particular area is such a point of reference that it is used as a classification system for New York theatres: On-Broadway, Off-Broadway or Off-Off-Broadway. Fashion: You’ll get a free fashion show 24 hours a day, 7 days a week just by watching people go by in New York. And, needless to say, the many boutiques and styles are a great source of inspiration for your next outfit. Plus, with Gendrontours, you get a discount at Macy’s and Century 21! Food: Discover New York’s culinary scene, and enjoy the best from every culture on the Island of Manhattan! When it comes to food, the Big Apple is synonymous with endless choice, variety and authentic restaurants! Vacation & Leisure 2016-2017

CHICAGO The Capital of the Midwest

© City of Chicago

By Jonathan Gloutnay, Director of Coach Bus Travel

© Skydeck Chicago

The third largest city in the U.S., Chicago is relatively young when compared to Boston and New York. Still, Chicago is full of endless treasures, just waiting to be discovered. Did you know that Chicago is home to the starting point of legendary Route 66? With an urban landscape rich in both modern and old-school architecture, it’s plain to see why Chicago is a city unlike any other. Its strategic location alongside Lake Michigan also procures some of the most breathtaking views you’ve ever seen! From the Skydeck at the top of the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower, you can take in spectacular views spanning the City, the Plains of Illinois and Lake Michigan. Braver souls can also step out onto The Ledge, the glass-floor balcony extending out from the Skydeck! When it comes to good food, Chicago has clearly earned bragging rights. There are tons of restaurants to choose from with a variety of dishes to suit every taste and budget. Just make sure you try the signature deep-dish pizza! And,

28 Vacation & Leisure 2016-2017

while you’re there, you will also want to indulge in some delectable gourmet sweet/salty popcorn at Garrett Popcorn Shops, established in 1949. There’s nothing better! Chicago’s downtown core, commonly referred to as The Loop, has several must-see places to visit. First off, there’s Millennium Park, which offers a wide range of free outdoor concerts. Just a hop, skip and jump away, you can also check out the Cloud Gate—a cool-looking iconic bean-shaped sculpture you’ll want to photograph from every angle! But, above all, you won’t want to miss the Chicago Riverwalk. Its canal and lift bridges are as synonymous with Chicago as Central Park is with New York. Stroll along the Magnificent Mile, recognized for its amazing nightlife, high-end boutiques, brand name shops and architecture. With over 70 museums of all sorts, beautiful fountains, endless green spaces and 45 km of beaches along Lake Michigan, Chicago has nothing to envy of other major North-American cities. In fact, thanks to its avant-garde urban vibe, Chicago rivals just about any other city you can think of. On top of it all, Chicago is one of the cleanest and quietest cities around. You’ll understand what we mean when you see the public transportation and many taxis running on hybrid energy. This considerably reduces noise

pollution and makes the city more eco-friendly. You’re sure to love it! One more thing you’ll want to add to your list is a game or two, whether it’s watching the Cubs or White Sox at baseball, the Blackhawks at hockey or the Bears at football. If you’re looking for a new destination and eager for great discoveries, I promise you Chicago won’t disappoint. You’ll be under its charm in no time. In fact, you’re bound to be sad to leave, and soon be dreaming of the day you get to visit again. BRING

ATLANTIC CITY AND PHILADELPHIA © Bob Krist

By Jonathan Gloutnay, Director of Coach Bus Travel

When you think about Atlantic City, casinos are most likely the first thing that come to mind. But, don’t be fooled! The “Las Vegas of the East coast” has so much more to offer, for every taste and for all ages. Atlantic City initially became a popular destination as a result of its proximity to big cities like New York and Philadelphia. Starting in 1870, the city laid down its very first wooden platform along the beach. This marked the beginning of its now famous boardwalk, so popular it has been lengthened and modified countless times since its inception, and is now considered the longest in the world. The Atlantic City of yesteryear, however, has not always been the same. In the 20s, during the prohibition, hotel proprietors would serve liquor in coffee cups to avoid going bankrupt. During the Second World War, American soldiers would stay in the city’s hotels before being deployed to Europe. And, did you know that the Miss America Pageant was held in Atlantic City every year between 1921 and 2000? That the city served as inspiration for the inventor of Monopoly? That the very first legal casino was established here only in 1970? Indeed, Atlantic City has had a colourful past. Today, the city offers a vast array of shows to choose from throughout the year. You can also enjoy its many beaches, take in some fishing or enjoy a cruise. In addition to this, there are 20 or so golf courses located close to the city. Or, if you like shopping, Tanger Outlets has over 100 shops and restaurants for you to explore. In the mood to party or let off some steam? The city has tons of

places where you can have a drink and enjoy some good times. While in New Jersey, you can also visit Philadelphia. Philly is a city replete with history, culture and great food. Did you know that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both signed here? In fact, Philadelphia was the very first U.S. capital, and was home to Benjamin Franklin for almost two decades. If you’re a history and culture buff, you can’t miss seeing the iconic Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the President’s House, the Rodin Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Masonic Temple. You’ll also want to check out the Reading Terminal Market where the Amish come to sell their wares. And, if you’re interested in discovering more about the Amish community, try the guided tour in Lancaster. This farming community’s lifestyle will take you back to an era before technology, running water and electricity. Also, we will take you to see the mega-production Samson presenting a large-scale show which will amaze you, just like the million people having seen it in 2015.

ONE-WAY OR ROUND TRIP TRANSPORTATION BY PLANE PRICE ON REQUEST

By Julie Trahan, Travel Consultant

In this year of presidential elections, Gendrontours invites you to discover the U.S. capital, where major world decisions are made, day in and day out. In Washington, everything is clean, classic and oozing of patriotism. No matter where you look, there is sure to be an American flag standing tall and strong, flapping proudly in the wind. Lovers of politics, history and culture… this is the place for you!

All things political

Anyone planning on going to Washington should expect to visit the city’s major historical monuments and emblems: the iconic White House, the Pentagon, the Capitol (with its highly recognizable dome), the Lincoln Memorial with its obelisk and statue of the 16th President of the United States. You’ll also want to stop in at the Library of Congress, which houses an incredible 138 million documents stacked across 850 km of shelves! If you have the time, you absolutely must visit the National Archives Building, where you can see the original Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States. Lastly, make sure you take a few minutes to pay tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives, from the

30 Vacation & Leisure 2016-2017

American Civil War to today, by making your way to Arlington National Cemetery located across the Potomac River. Along with soldiers who have died in the line of duty, many dignitaries have also been buried here, including JFK.

Safe and clean

When visiting this hub of U.S. politics, keep in mind that there is a very heavy police presence here, especially in the northeast portion of the city where the political elite are concentrated. This area is also where you’ll find the main tourist attractions. As such, you’ll be able to stroll the streets without a worry, enjoying the surroundings of crisp white buildings standing in contrast to the impeccably manicured green spaces. Plus, getting around in Washington is as easy as it gets; the streets are laid out in a straight checkerboard pattern and all main roads lead you back to the central squares.

Sociocultural life

If culture is your thing, a single visit to Washington will not suffice. The city has 200 museums for you to explore. And, the best part is, 95% of them are free! The Smithsonian Institution, established in 1846, currently includes 19. Here, you’ll be able to

enjoy a variety of sites dedicated to key areas of interest such as aviation, space exploration, art, history, natural science and native peoples. Those who are into architecture will certainly have plenty to see as they explore the city’s splendid mix, which includes Ancient Egypt, classical Greek, Medieval Europe and 19th century France. Indeed, Washington is known for its neoclassical style, particularly evidenced in the structures of Georgetown University. Enjoy the gardens and green spaces as you get acquainted with modern or contemporary art at the National Mall, an immense park that is home to several commemorative monuments. If you’re in the mood to enjoy some fresh air, the Potomac River is a great place to start. Running through the heart of the city, the river offers you the chance to enjoy water sports and other recreational activities. Or, you can simply hop on a cruise and explore. On the culinary side, Washington does not disappoint. You will have access to a wide variety of ethnic restaurants and boutiques. This wonderful city boasts tremendous culinary diversity and something for every budget. For a vacation rich in history, Washington, D.C. is definitely the place to be!

Immerse yourself in the world of American music: from country to rock ‘n’ roll © Memphis CVB

There are many sides to American culture, and Gendrontours invites you to explore one of them as you discover everything there is to know about music—from country to rock ‘n’ roll. Travel back in time on the roads of Tennessee. From Nashville to Memphis, come experience American music from every possible angle.

A musical adventure Synonymous with a party atmosphere and smoky rooms, American music pairs perfectly with a shot of bourbon or whisky, or perhaps even an ice-cold beer. Re-live everything from wild-coloured album covers, shiny jukeboxes blasting classic tunes and cool neon signs as you take a musical journey from 1940 to 1975. Country icons such as Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn were a true influence on rock ‘n’ roll legends from Bob Dylan to Elvis—all of whom are responsible for getting generations of music lovers up on their feet. It’ll really take you back! During your getaway, we suggesting filling up on history, movies, photos and archival documents by visiting some of the most beautiful historical places, museums and recording studios. Tennessee abounds with places dedicated exclusively to country and rock music. Expect to enjoy some great memories and a taste of some of the best music around.

Nashville: more than just country music Despite being the home of country music and second largest music production hub in the United

States after New York City, there is so much more to Nashville than its musical side. Did you know that it was a strategic town during the Civil War? Nashville also has several universities, including prestigious Vanderbilt University. Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, owned several acres of cotton plantations there. And, the city is also home to Centennial Park where you’ll find an art museum that is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. Take a guided tour of the city and discover all of its hidden treasures.

Stroll Beale Street in the evening and let yourself be transported by the music. This pedestrian street is a hub of restaurants and bars filled with bands belting out tunes of every musical style! Re-live the American Dream as you tour Cleveland, Cincinnati, Nashville, Louisville, Memphis… it’s every music lover’s dream come true! © Nashville Convention & Visitors Corporation

Louisville: derby, and bourbon You simply can’t visit Tennessee without stopping in Louisville. Although sports lovers might know the city as the home of the famous Louisville slugger baseball bat, the city is equally as famous for its bourbon. Louisville is an eclectic and vibrant place with a spectacular blend of historical and contemporary architecture. Visit the third largest historic district in the U.S., discover the world of the Kentucky Derby and experience a variety of outdoor, cultural and just plain fun activities!

Memphis: Graceland and Elvis It’s impossible to talk about Memphis without mentioning The King! The first thing you’ll want to do in Memphis is join the thousands of other tourists who have come to see Graceland and learn everything they can about how Elvis lived. You’ll visit mythical places where blues, soul and rock legends got their start. Sun Studio, the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum and Heartbreak Hotel—there is something for everyone to enjoy.

and diversity have made it an incredibly popular tourist destination. And, no doubt, the warm, friendly nature of Bostonians also adds to the appeal! I personally have a special place in my heart for this city because of the fact that it welcomed tens of thousands of Irish immigrants, including many of my very own ancestors. If you like to party, you are sure to love Boston. Irish pubs abound, from one end of the city to the other. And, as a university city with gorgeous campuses such as those of Harvard and MIT, Boston also boasts countless green spaces you are sure to enjoy. It is truly a historic city—one of the oldest cities in the U.S., in fact. Its wealth of culture and historic districts make it a pure pleasure to discover.

Boston remains one of my favourite cities on the American East Coast. Its colonial past, rich culture

BOSTON AND NEWPORT’S CASTLES

Its French past is still very much evident throughout the city, with the French Quarter standing as testament to this incredibly rich history. After the French Quarter, Boston’s North End is another neighbourhood definitely worth checking out. Known as Boston’s Little Italy, this part of the city is packed with top-quality restaurants, pastry shops (famous for their cannoli) and, of course, a slew of art galleries. After New York the fabulous, Boston the marvelous is a joy to visit, thanks in part to its dozens of parks, and the countless places you can enjoy the water throughout the city. As much as I love New York for its sheer size, I have to say that I love Boston for its quiet charm. Of course, no visit to Boston would be complete without exploring the neighbouring areas. Cape Cod is a must-see if only for its fabulous beaches. And, a little farther off, the splendid castles of Newport are a thrill to see. I simply can’t contain my love for this region! Join me on one of our next departures and you’ll quickly understand why!

Group travel …

Advantages

galore!

Tempted to take part in a group trip, but still weighing all the pros and cons? Let us tell you about all of the advantages of travelling with a group so you can be well informed and ready to make an enlightened decision. Travelling as part of a group can relieve you of a lot of the stress that comes with visiting a new destination, and all of its unknowns. That’s because everything is taken care of for you—from start to finish. You won’t have to worry about booking your flights, hotels, restaurants or about getting your tickets to visit museums or monuments. Hotel checkins and travel to the various activities will be handled by your guide, who is also a great source of help during your trip, and who generally speaks the language of the country you are visiting (which can be a blessing for those who are a little more linguistically challenged!). Group travel also offers a lot more freedom than people think. Although

these trips generally follow a set schedule, there are tons of opportunities for travellers to go off on their own and explore. Besides, scheduled activities usually include most of the essentials such as visits to the main sites and monuments. Group travel is also a great way to meet new people, share with others who have the same interests and create friendships that can continue even after your trip. Travelling with fellow Canadians who speak your language can make you feel safer and more comfortable when visiting an unknown place. During a trip to very exotic places, having this sense of belonging can really help ease the culture shock certain individuals may be feeling. What’s more, if you particularly enjoyed the guide you had during a given trip, you can always choose to be part of his or her group again in the future. You’ll be free to discover other

destinations with complete peace of mind, and without any of the fear of the unknown you may have had before your first group trip. It’s the best of both worlds! On the practical side, travelling as part of a group means you won’t have to drive, look for parking (or pay for it!) or take taxis in unknown countries, which takes away most of the stress that comes with travelling—a clear advantage! Group travel is also rewarding from a financial perspective. Travellers who reserve a spot in a group can have access to a set price for a given date as well as preferential rates for certain excursions and visits.

CRUISES

Cruises

Navigate the waters of the latest trends with Gendrontours By Mathieu Robert, Travel Consultant, Cruise Specialist

The best advice I can give for your first cruise is: pick something that reflects your personality and your needs. The company, ship, itinerary and even the cabin will have a direct influence on your travel experience. At Gendrontours, we stay up to date on the latest in the world of cruise travel to ensure your trip is an unforgettable one. Trends in this industry tend to slowly be adopted by each of the various cruise lines. The all-inclusive concept is an interesting example of an approach that more and more companies, including Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises seem to be taking advantage of. In fact, the current trend seems to be offering regular promotions that include alcoholic beverages, on-board credits, tips and even free Internet access. River cruises and smaller ships are also an emerging phenomenon that is attracting a wider clientele thanks to their attentive service, longer stopovers and, quite often, a heightened culinary experience. Catering to those who are travelling alone is also a growing trend. Many ships now offer single cabins with no added costly fees to accommodate those who need it. Cruise itineraries are gradually changing too. We are seeing a wider selection of destinations, cruises planned in conjunction with special events and the option of spending more nights at ports of call,

allowing you to enjoy even more time at unique and diverse destinations. Our 2016–2017 line-up includes our usual specialties: • • • • • • • • •

Alaska Bermuda Bahamas Caribbean U.S. East Coast Northern Europe Hawaii The Mediterranean The Middle East (Dubai)

…as well as exclusive cruise stopovers oceanwide where you can experience countless popular festivals such as the Rio Carnival, Mardi Gras, the Lantern Festival, New Year in Dubai, and much more! • • • • • • • • •

Interview UNITED STATES

Lucile Martin Bordeleau’s best advice for

living Well

Photos © Alexis De Gheldere

The road of life is one filled with unexpected twists and turns, with countless decisions to be made along the way. Of course, the decisions we make as we come to these crossroads lead us all in different directions— inevitably, some of us end up on more exciting and inspiring paths than others. It is my pleasure to introduce a woman whose journey thus far has been a most memorable one—Mrs. Lucile Martin Bordeleau. – Bernard Gendron, President of Gendron Travel By Alexis De Gheldere, Journalist

Meet 92-year-old Lucile Martin Bordeleau. Incredibly witty and in stellar health, there is practically nothing to keep this traveller down. “I can still do everything on my own. A few years ago, I really wanted to go to China. But, after doing a little research, I found out there is quite a bit of pollution there. And, well, at my age, I do have to be somewhat careful … ” My meeting with this amazing woman took place on a beautiful spring morning. After making my way up to the 21st Floor of a high-rise apartment in Laval-des-Rapides alongside Rivière des Prairies, I was warmly greeted by Lucile who eagerly invited me into her impeccably neat fourroom apartment. I quickly learned that Lucile was first bitten by the travel bug back in 1950, when she and three friends, all in their 20s, decided to go backpacking across Europe for three months. “We travelled by train, and even hitchhiked. And, we were part of a small privileged group who met Pope Pius XII at

44 Vacation & Leisure 2016-2017

the Vatican. There were only about forty of us! It was quite impressive to be able to meet the Pope in person. It was almost surreal!” When she settled down and had five sons, Lucile enjoyed countless camping trips throughout Québec and the U.S. And, once the children left the nest, she and her husband decided to spread their own wings and start travelling abroad. “Travelling is never a waste of money,” says Lucile, “You learn so many things. Of course, we’ve been to Florida, but we’ve also travelled to Portugal, Egypt, Ecuador and Thailand.” A collection of plates displayed on Lucile’s wall stands as testament to the countless destinations she has visited. Now at age 92, Lucile’s still has plenty of travel plans. “I went to Cuba by myself when I was 88, and this year I plan to take a cruise to St-Pierre-deMiquelon, either alone or maybe with my children.” Everyone knows that travelling keeps your mind active. But, of course, the body has to be able to keep up! That’s why, in her 40s, Lucile completely changed her eating habits and became a certified

naturopath. Her book Les bonnes combinaisons alimentaires perfectly summarizes Lucile’s core beliefs: you can’t eat whatever you want, however you want. She explains that the rate of digestion differs greatly with different foods. Some digestion waste can obstruct your bowels before being carried throughout the body by your blood. So, overall, can we say that travelling and good eating habits are the secret to successful ageing? “These things are important, but you also have to stay active,” explains Lucile, who played tennis for much of her life and has always enjoyed walking. “We did a lot of skiing. A bunch of us used to take the P’tit Train du Nord to Val-David in the 50s. Every day, after breakfast, we’d head outside, come back in for lunch and then head outdoors again. There’s no way we would stay cooped up all weekend long! I once read something in a magazine for seniors that I still repeat constantly repeat to myself: ‘Grouille ou rouille!’ In other words, ‘Get moving, or you’ll start rusting up!’ Definitely words to live by!

Dubai is the only place in the world where you can ride a Jeep in the desert and go downhill skiing—all in the same day! Located in the Arabian Desert along the beautiful shores of the Persian Gulf, Dubai looks like a scene out of a futuristic science fiction movie. The most populated city in the United Arab Emirates, the city made its fortunes on the oil industry before turning its focus to luxury tourism. Dubai boasts countless immense shopping malls and prestigious hotels, and even has a man-made island in the shape of a palm tree! You’ll also find some of the most incredible architectural elements in the world—case in point, Burj Khalifa, the tallest structure in the world—as well as eccentric tourist attractions like an indoor ski resort. Dubai, of course, is also synonymous with camelback expeditions through the desert, beaches, dhow cruises on the sea and bargaining sessions in the souks. Caribbean’s Splendour of the Seas bring you first to Khasab in Oman—a country that has always been at the maritime crossroads between Asia, Eastern Africa and Europe. The Khasab fjords are an incredible place to enjoy some swimming and watch the dolphins in magical surroundings. The second stop on your journey is Muscat, the capital of Oman—a city that has truly preserved its identity, values and way of life. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a tale from One Thousand and One Nights as you make your way through the streets of this enchanting town with elegant buildings of sculpted white stone. Don’t miss Sultan Qaboos’ Grand Mosque, the Al Alam Palace and the Al-Jalali Fort (Mirani). Reserve your next trip to Las Vegas and visit all of the new restaurants, stores, spas, clubs and more! Downtown Las Vegas is likely to be quite different from the way you remember it. The city’s revitalization has opened up a world of possibilities with hip urban accommodations including the Oasis at Gold Spike as well as stores and restaurants such as Downtown Container Park, located in the Fremont East Entertainment District. Enjoy a bite at Kerry Simon’s Carson Kitchen (4*½ according to Yelp) where you can indulge in artisanal cocktails, stone-baked flatbread and other signature dishes. While you are downtown, you simply can’t miss the Slotzilla zip line, a unique attraction that will have you soaring over the heart of the Fremont Street Experience.

Costa Rica

An excursion in the very HEART of nature! By Patricia Lemieux, Travel Consultant

Imagine you are flying over the Caribbean Sea when suddenly a seemingly endless stretch of lush rainforest appears below you. As the plane descends, you witness the terrain beginning to emerge—volcanoes, waterfalls, canals and, in the distance, the magnificent city of San José, surrounded by majestic mountains. The moment you step off the plane, you will be greeted by locals living the pura vida lifestyle, laid back and in perfect harmony with the boundless nature that surrounds them. To the east, Costa Rica borders the Caribbean Sea, with its gorgeous dark and white sandy beaches, brilliant sun, seaside boardwalks and Tortuguero National Park—a rainforest that is home to countless species of turtles, including the ever-impressive sea turtle. There are no roads that can take you to this hidden gem, so be prepared to make your way down a few canals by canoe! The Pacific side of Costa Rica is a surfer’s paradise and also boasts a superb spot for scuba diving near Corcovado in the southwest.

Farther inland, you’ll find yourself completely immersed in nature. Here are just some of the many wonderful activities you can enjoy:

Manuel Antonio National Park A true gem, this park is incredibly rich in wildlife and biodiversity, at the center of which are its two star attractions—the White-faced Capuchin and the sloth. It’s also a great place to enjoy rafting and kayaking or simply explore the white sandy beaches as you discover the best this country has to offer in terms of fauna and flora.

Monteverde Cross the famous suspension bridges overlooking the rainforest as you enjoy a hiking tour.

The Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja and Poas volcanoes… and many more

Photos © Costa Rica Monkey Tours

Costa Rica has 112 volcanoes, many of which are active. You can choose to either hike to the summit or simply soak in the hot springs at places like La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano.

Activities are aplenty and for everyone. It’s no surprise that the country welcomes every year about two million visitors. Our very favorites: • Dole’s pineapple and banana plantations • Charmingly rustic hotels • Costa Rican coffee tasting • Picking your own coconut!

Costa del Sol By Jean-Guy Simard, Guide and Destination Rep

LSpain is an absolutely magnificent country, and its people are so welcoming you may actually never want to go back home! I’ve personally been to Costa del Sol every winter for the last seven years and, quite frankly, I expect to keep going back again and again and again! Going on a trip is always great, but truly experiencing a trip is a thousand times better. And that’s precisely what it’s like in Spain. On a three to nine-week vacation, you can adopt a slower pace of life as you explore the local markets, discover laid-back terraces and good wine, or stroll along the beach… in Costa del Sol, life is simple and oh-so sweet. Your “base camp” will be in Fuengirola, a seaside town surrounded by eight kilometres of cliffs and beaches opening up to the Mediterranean. In the 1950s, Fuengirola was nothing more than a tiny fishing harbour with a castle in ruins as a backdrop. Today, Fuengirola has matured into a small town equipped with absolutely everything you need. Somewhere between all of your local discoveries, why not set off on an excursion? Gendrontours offers a great variety of options I will be thrilled to (re)discover with you! For those of

you who loved the experience so much (and there are quite a few!), this year’s edition offers several interesting variations. In the Fall of 2016, combine your stay with a transatlantic cruise from Barcelona. I’ll be there to enjoy it with you! And, for the Winter 2017 season, discover our Costa del sol – Andalusia and Costa del Sol – Barcelona combos.

TRAVEL CONFERENCES Join us on May 12 at our Valleyfield offices, on May 4 at Hotel Espresso in Montreal or on May 5 at the Plaza Hotel in Valleyfield, where Mr. Simard will share his knowledge and love of Spain with you.

Mere words cannot do it justice

You have to experience India’s unique culture, landscapes, religion and food for yourself. By Chantal Leclerc, Senior Travel Advisor

The Taj Mahal Located in the heart of an immense 17-hectare Mughal garden, the Taj Mahal is considered the architectural crown jewel of Indo-Islamic art.

Agra Fort Within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, this powerful fortress of red sandstone includes several fairy-tale palaces, audience halls and two very beautiful mosques.

Fatehpur Sikri The City of Victory, built in the latter half of the XVIth century, boasts several monuments and temples, including of the greatest mosques in India, Jama Masjid.

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur India, one of the world’s three oldest civilizations, is a land replete with charm and mystery several thousands of years old. Customs differ from one region to the next, and are all colourfully expressed through dance, religion, architecture and music. The incredible wealth of culture is evidenced in everyday life, and in the smiling faces of the locals. Birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism—with over two billion followers altogether—India is likely one of the most religious places in the world. As such, worship is clearly a central part of everyday life, and even commonplace greetings have a much deeper meaning… Namaste. India is so incredibly beautiful, it’s easy to imagine that Divine intervention somehow played a role in its creation. From the snow-covered Himalayas of the north, to the arid Thar Desert of the west, the lagoons and lakes (backwaters of Kerala) of the south and, of course, Udaipur, the city of lakes in the heart of it all, India’s allure is endless. Jungles, colourful birds, tigers, temples and seashores covered in lush vegetation create a landscape that will simply take your breath away. A total of 25 cultural sites and 7 natural sites in India have been classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. They include:

Qutb Minar, Delhi Built in the early XIIIth century, a few kilometres south of Delhi, this minaret offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. The neighbouring architectural area contains funerary buildings, the magnificent AlaiDarwaza Gate and two mosques. A land of intense contrasts, India is, on the one hand, deeply rooted in tradition and, on the other hand, also extremely modern. So, you’re as likely to come across a snake charmer as you are a computer geek (The country is, after all, the world’s leader in computer technology)! So, what are you waiting for? Iceland LAND OF FIRE AND ICE By Julie Trahan, Travel Consultant

Incredibly vast, pure, serene and somewhat apocalyptic (at times!)—these are just a few of the adjectives that best describe this amazing country of contrasts, which captivates us with its geothermal phenomena and its indescribable natural beauty. What is it that makes Iceland a choice destination? What exactly is there to see? I would often ask myself these very same questions… until I got to experience it for myself a few years ago. Now, it is abundantly clear to me that there is so much more to Iceland than its famous Blue Lagoon. First off, Iceland is worth discovering if only for the Nordic charm of its capital city, Reykjavik, perched along the ocean. Then, of course, there is Thingvellir National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—where you can see geysers (one of these erupts every 10 minutes), fumaroles, hot springs of the most hypnotic turquoise blue and, last but not least, Gullfoss, an enormous waterfall you can truly get up close and personal with. These three attractions are part of what is known as the Golden Circle.

ocean are definitely snapshot-worthy. Yet another must-visit stop while in Iceland is the Jokulsarlon ice lagoon, a magical expanse of icebergs from the Vatnajokull Glacier floating all the way out to the ocean. You can stroll on the shore, zigzagging between ice forms of all shapes and sizes of the most glorious shades of blue, shaped and sculpted over time by the wind and water.

In the northern part of the country, you can indulge in the thermal baths of Myvatn while taking in the beauty of the surrounding crater. Now, really, is there anywhere else in the world you can do this? We think not! Green prairies teeming with sheep and wild horses, countless waterfalls along the road (including the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe!), thermal springs, volcanoes, the East Fjords, seaside villages and the possibility of swimming in the Blue Lagoon—all this, and so much more, is precisely what makes Iceland a unique destination worth discovering.

The black volcanic sand beach in the small town of Vik is another captivating place to visit. The cliffs and massive basalt columns sculpted by the

NATURAL PARTNERSHIP By Jimmy Sévigny, Personal Trainer

Last year, when I met with the people at Gendrontours, I felt an instant connection. They were a really cool bunch. Plus, they truly believed in all my crazy projects (and heaven knows, I’ve got lots of those!). In the end, this natural partnership resulted in a variety of one-of-a-kind travel experiences for Gendron’s customers. Whether you want to try a boot camp in Mexico (where you work out up to three hours a day), mountain climbing that requires four months of prior training, or a yoga retreat in a eco-responsible hotel complex in the middle of the jungle, you are sure to find something just for you. My team and I will prove to you that travelling can be an opportunity to push your physical limits while respecting a healthy lifestyle (of course, a little indulgence never hurt anyone!). Lastly, we make sure that our travel options are suited to all levels of physical ability, so anyone can take part and progress at their own pace. I would personally like to invite you—or rather, challenge you—to join us and push yourself to excel on both a physical and personal level during any of our amazing trips. I look forward to meeting you! And, in the meantime, keep training and stay fit! www.jimmysevigny.com

People love Hawaii for its great diversity when it comes to scenery, climate and choice of activities. The Hawaiian Islands are part of a volcanic archipelago of 137 islands that sits at the heart of the Pacific Ocean. Located 3,200 kilometres from the closest continent, they are considered the most isolated in the world. Discovering Hawaii is a little like time travel, where you can see an island in the midst of creation. The active volcanoes continue to expand the archipelago with every eruption, and each of them is testament to how time has altered the landscape. The resulting erosion has moulded and shaped the mountains and carved out valleys and waterfalls, creating some of the most spectacular landscapes. The Island of Oahu, a gateway for the majority of visitors, is a great place to adjust to the Hawaiian lifestyle and enjoy everything the biggest city in the state, Honolulu, has to offer, as well as the ever-popular Waikiki beach. Big Island, for its part, has some of the highest volcanoes in the world as well as the biggest astronomical center,

the Mauna Kea Observatory. In Kauai, the Waimea Canyon, known as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” boasts numerous hiking paths for outdoor enthusiasts as well as breathtaking views of the Napali coast. The diverse landscape of the archipelago, its tropical climate, abundance of public beaches and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists and surfers alike. It’s a fabulous place to relax with your feet in the sand, play a round of golf, enjoy some mountain biking, take part in a surfing competition, swim with the dolphins or go whalewatching… or take part in any other of the countless other activities available to you here. If you are so inclined, you can also hop on a cruise ship and set off to discover several other islands. A culture rich history and mythology adds that special touch that is sure to make your stay in Hawaii unique and unforgettable.

In certain places, you’ll feel like you have been transported back to the Edo era, while in other areas, it’s almost as if you have stepped right into the future. Needless to say, the contrast is the most striking in the city of Tokyo. This is a city where you can stroll through the vibrant modern neighbourhood of Shinjuku just before visiting the Senso-Ji Temple in Asakusa, where cultural heritage has been impeccably preserved. Tokyo is also renowned for its fine cuisine, culture and fashion, not to mention its massive electronics stores! And, when the time comes to relax and recharge, you can soak in an Onsen at the foot of Mount Fuji, the most sacred mountain of the Shinto religion. In Hiroshima, the resilience of the town’s inhabitants will become remarkably vivid when you visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which pays tribute to the victims of the first nuclear attack in history in 1945. Miyajima, a tiny island paradise located a mere 30-minute train ride from Hiroshima, is a must-see for anyone visiting Japan. Its Heian architecture and Itsukushima Shrine, built right over the water, will take your breath away. Kyoto, for its part, is the ideal spot for discovering anything and everything about Japanese

culture. The city has been named the cultural capital of Japan, most notably because of its 2,000 temples and shrines! You can also wander through the iconic bamboo forest and check out the Iwatayama Monkey Park for a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Anyone visiting Japan can expect endless adventure and discoveries—but comfort and safety as well. Because it’s so easy to get around here, so impeccably clean and so welcoming and friendly, Japan is clearly a destination absolutely everyone can enjoy.

LET YOUR GOLF BALL TRAVEL!

Terms and conditions Please read the following conditions carefully and make sure you understand them completely before making a reservation. We reserve the right to make changes any time after publication in order to correct errors or omissions, or for any other reason beyond our control. Coach bus vacations: at the time of the magazine’s printing, unless otherwise indicated, spots were still available. Please visit our Web site for updates. PACKAGE PRICES Prices are quotes in Canadian dollars and are based on availability at the time of reservation. Prices include services as described on our Web site. For example: return transportation, accommodations where applicable, guide (see the “Guided Group Trips” section), hotel service fees unless otherwise indicated, contribution to the Indemnity Fund of $1 per $1,000 for packages under $1,000, and taxes. RESERVATIONS/SECURITY DEPOSIT Day trips are payable in full upon reservation. We recommend that you reserve at least 45 days before your chosen departure date for packages including overnight stays. A security deposit of 25% (not including insurance) is required upon reservation. For payments made by cheque, no reservation will be confirmed until the cheque has cleared and we have received the full deposit. Please note that cheques will not be accepted in the case of reservations for departures taking place within 30 days or less. A deposit of 50% is required in the case of promotional rates. FINAL PAYMENT The balance of the payment must be received at least 45 days before your departure date; otherwise, Gendron Travel reserves the right to cancel said reservation without prior notification and without any possible recourse, and will retain a cancellation fee. For reservations made 45 days or less before the departure date, payment must be made in full at the time of reservation. Cruises: the final payment must be received 60 days before the departure date. UNUSED SERVICES No refunds will be provided for services that are unused or cancelled before or after your departure or as a result of circumstances beyond our control. TRAVEL INSURANCE Gendron Travel strongly recommends that its customers purchase comprehensive travel insurance adapted to their needs. Customers are solely responsible for obtaining insurance that covers trip cancellation/baggage loss/medical care/trip interruption, etc. Please contact our travel consultants for more information. CANCELLATION FEES 45 days or more before departure: total deposit. Less than 45 days before departure: total cost of package, including all taxes. CUSTOMER’S RESPONSIBILITY The customer is responsible for informing the travel consultant of any condition (physical, health, pregnancy, etc.) that may restrict their ability to travel in any way whatsoever, as stipulated in Article 28 of the LPC. Depending on your destination, you may be required to pay a departure tax and/ or tourist card (per person) immediately on site. ACCOMMODATIONS Hotel management is solely responsible for the allocation of rooms. Gendron Travel will be happy to forward any special requests at the time of reservation, but can in no way guarantee that they will be honoured. INCREASE IN PRICE AND COSTS In the event of an increase in taxes, royalties or other fees authorized by a recognized public authority, the indicated prices are subject to change. Gendron Travel reserves the right to increase fees and prices as a result of fluctuations in exchange rates, fuel costs, taxes and other applicable fees. Should the price increase occur following a fuel surcharge imposed by the carrier or an increase in the exchange rate (if the exchange rate applicable 45 days before provision of

services has increased more than 5% since the date of contract signing; and/or if the increase in price, without taking the QST and GST into consideration, is equal to or higher than 7% of the price of services), the customer may cancel said services (with full and immediate refund of services) or opt for a substitute offer of similar services; if the price of these similar services is higher than those originally reserved, the customer will be required to pay for the price difference. No price increase may occur within 30 days before provision of services. Any price reduction resulting from a promotion or decision made by Gendron Travel applies to new reservations only. For the most recent prices, please contact one of our travel consultants. No changes will be brought to previously made reservations. GENDRON TRAVEL’S RESPONSIBILITY Gendron Travel is responsible for offering all of the services described on its Web site. If, for any reason whatsoever, the stipulated services cannot be offered, Gendron Travel will offer the customer services of a comparable nature. Gendron Travel reserves the right to cancel or modify a trip at any time. The passenger waives the right to all claims of any nature or any kind against Gendron Travel for loss, theft, accidents or damage. Gendron Travel will not be held liable for the closing of facilities, strikes, bankruptcies, political crises, terrorist acts, bad weather, the quality of services provided by suppliers, overselling by its suppliers, the traveller’s failure to obtain all necessary travel documents, flight delays or any other circumstances beyond its control that may prevent or impede the normal and anticipated activities of the trip. RESERVATION CHANGES – COACH BUS Name changes are possible for coach bus travel only. The applicable fees for changes are as follows: 30 days or more before the departure date, $25/pers.; 29 days or less before the departure date, 100% of the total cost. Any name or date change will be considered a cancellation. See paragraph on “Cancellation Fees” for more information. GUIDED GROUP TRIPS If the minimum number of passengers required for any of the group trips advertised in this magazine is not attained, Gendron Travel reserves the right to cancel the trip. If, however, the customer would still like to take said trip on his own, the package cost may be higher or lower depending on the price in effect at that particular time. If the trip is cancelled for the reasons stated above and the customer chooses not to travel on his own, he will be reimbursed in full. The Group Guide is only guaranteed to accompany the group if the customer minimum is attained. In the case of cruise groups, the Group Guide is only guaranteed once the 8th cabin is sold. COACH BUS For most destinations, it is possible to reserve your seat upon reservation. Should multiple coach buses be used for a single package, Gendron Travel reserves the right to alter seat selection and boarding/pick-up locations for logistical purposes. For certain destinations, or in situations where there are few travellers, Gendron Travel reserves the right to use its 15 and 31-passenger coach buses in order to avoid cancelling the trip. The day of the departure, we strongly suggest that you arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before your boarding time. Note that coach buses may arrive late in certain cases due to traffic. Do not leave your boarding/pick-up location until the coach bus arrives. DEPARTURE – BOARDING LOCATIONS Coach bus departures include the following boarding/pick-up locations: L’Aubainerie (1375 Mgr-Langlois Blvd.) in Valleyfield; Tim Hortons (420 Harwood Blvd.) in Vaudreuil-Dorion; Palais des congrès (301 St-Antoine Street) in Montréal. PASSEPORT A valid Canadian passport is your only proof of Canadian citizenship and is required any time you travel outside the country. Some countries required that your passport be valid for 6 months beyond your anticipated date of return to Canada.

BAGGAGE Each air carrier has its own set standards regarding number, weight and size when it comes to baggage. The customer is responsible for obtaining information on applicable restrictions either from his travel consultant or directly from the air carrier. TRAVEL DOCUMENTS Coach bus: your invoice serves as confirmation. Itineraries are available on our Web site as well as in the coach bus during the trip. You may also leave us your email address in order to receive a copy of the itinerary and your guide’s contact information. Coach bus and plane: The customer is solely responsible for having all required travel documents (passport, visa, etc.) in his possession before his departure. The customer is also responsible for ensuring that he receives all vaccines required by the authorities of the country he is visiting, at his own expense. Specific documents may be required for minors travelling alone, for children whose name is different from the adults accompanying them, or for a parent travelling alone with his/her children. The customer is responsible for obtaining information on all documents required either from his travel consultant and/or the appropriate consulate before his departure. Should a passenger not have all of the documents required by his destination’s government authorities in his possession, he may be refused entry, in which case Gendron Travel will not be held liable. Travellers who do not have all required travel documents in their possession can be refused the right to board a coach bus or airplane and will be required to find their way home through their own means, will not be refunded for any of the services paid for, and shall in no way hold Gendron Travel liable. Regardless of the situation, Gendron Travel will in no way be held liable for the consequences suffered by an customer who does not possess the required travel documents for a trip reserved on its behalf and shall not provide said customer with a refund.
