In fact, sports and recreation have become a specialty of ours, and our image has been rejuvinated. As such, you now know why I’ve been working in the travel industry for the last 25 years! My theory is, when it comes to skiing, you can never really get enough. The more places you ski, the more you want to explore. And, this year, we’re giving you the chance to get back to basics and explore as many hills as your heart desires thanks to our ski getaways by coach. We’ve even included lots of weekday excursions for those who want to avoid the busy weekend crowds. At Gendron Travel, our goal is simple: provide you with everything you need to enjoy as much skiing as possible! The 2015–16 season is going to be exciting, with the best skiing… and, hopefully, mounds and mounds of snow! Start planning your winter getaways by visiting our Montreal Ski event on Sunday, November 1—an event that has been attracting countless ski enthusiasts for years!
Paul Dubrûle Summer survival tip: Keep your ski magazine close by to help curb those winter cravings. Hopefully, just thinking about all the wonderful places you can visit will keep you satisfied until the ski season hits (unless, of course, you’re lucky enough to get to enjoy a summer ski escape in Chile!)

a classic worth rediscovering! By Bianca Montpetit Ski Travel Consultant

eing a Ski Travel Consultant, people often ask me what my favourite Western Canadian destination is. As an intermediate skier, I tend to prefer long descents and spectacular views, without necessarily risking my life at every turn! So, Banff is a natural choice for me. Ease and variety are what this resort is all about. Let me explain what I mean. First off, once you get to Calgary, a coach bus will be waiting to take you to the Town of Banff, so you won’t have to rent a car. And, once on site, you can make use of the shuttle system—one of the most efficient in Canada. Free (and punctual) shuttle buses will get you to three ski resorts as well as several other attractions including the famous hot springs. I swear there must be a stop at least every 10 metres—really!

Accommodation-wise, if your budget is limited, you might want to stay in a youth hostel. If, however, you are travelling as a family and want access to a kitchen, there is a wide range of condos to choose from. Then again, maybe you are looking for luxury accommodations, in which case the renowned Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is sure to meet your expectations. No matter who you are or what you need, there is something for everyone, at every price, in Banff.
well advised to hire a guide). As an added bonus, Sunshine will inaugurate a new lift in 2016—the Tee Pee—which has the added luxury of heated seats, perfect for keeping your bottom toasty on those extra cold days! Lake Louise is another great option you might want to explore. Although this resort is a favourite for World Cup skiers looking to beat their speed records, I like to take my time as I glide down the runs here, contemplating the gorgeous scenery along the way.
When it comes to choosing where to ski, you simply can’t go wrong with any of the internationally renowned resorts you’ll find here. You would need way more than a week to try them all out, though. Sunshine, which happens to be my favourite, offers a multitude of intermediate terrain options with just enough oomph. This resort also has lots of legendary off-piste runs like Delirium Dive, which I will personally leave to the experts (who, be warned, are also
Often suggested for a first-time ski vacation, Banff has quickly become a favourite with Eastern Canadians. Fun fact: elk are often known to come strolling into town, so keep your eyes peeled if you want to catch a glimpse of them during your après-ski down time!

here is no place more incredible than Banff! As someone who absolutely loves groomed runs, I was truly in my element at Sunshine and Lake Louise, with all the incredibly long and amazingly wide mountain runs. You just feel like you’re skiing with no boundaries, on endlessly groomed snow. During my visit to Banff, not a single snowflake had fallen in over 3 or 4 days, and yet my skis were biting into the light snow and there wasn’t a single trace of ice to be seen. The sky was the most sparkling blue I had ever seen and I enjoyed consistently perfect ski conditions. After a day on the slopes, Banff also has every après-ski option you could dream of! In fact, there is so much to choose from, you might find it hard to decide what to eat. From sushi to vegetarian to steakhouses… there is truly something for everyone and every budget! When skiing at Sunshine, I personally recommend lunch at Chimney Corner, located right on the mountain. I don’t think I had ever eaten a burger that big before! Another great option is Eddie Burger and Bar, if you’re looking for simple food and a friendly atmosphere in the heart of Banff. The burgers here are definitely worthy of a spot on your to-do list. Banff was truly an amazing place: huge mountains, a lively town and ski conditions like nowhere else. If you’ve never had the chance to see it for yourself, don’t wait any longer!

I
have been fortunate enough to ski many of the resorts offered by Gendron Travel over the years. So, when people ask me which is my favourite, I am always hard pressed to choose. I tend to say that each of the places I’ve visited is special for its own unique reason. But, when it comes to Whistler, I have to say, the reasons are innumerable! Let me fill you in. Faced with all the options Whistler has to offer, I would definitely start with the bowls. Both on Whistler and Blackcomb, you’ll find areas with tons of potential for loads of fun. One look at the trail map and you’ll quickly realize that these wideopen spaces—Symphony, West, Glacier, Diamond, Ruby and many more (all named for precious stones)—are nothing like the ones we have back home. The beauty of it all is that, if you are not used to skiing on this type of terrain, Whistler is probably the best place for you to learn. To get to Harmony, for example, there are several paths you can take, ranging from steep to easy going. And, after a big storm, the snow really piles up nicely in these spots. So, one of the first reasons I would recommend Whistler is its phenomenal bowls! The variety, quality and sheer size of the terrain is another characteristic that sets this destination apart from the rest. The numbers speak for themselves: with 8,100 acres of terrain, Whistler is the biggest resort in North America. You’ll need at least a week to test out your legs on all sorts of terrain, from easy, mellow greens to steep blacks to terrain parks, bowls, Olympic runs, moguls and long groomers like Peakto-Creek and Chainsaw Ridge. This entire playground is at your disposal through an incredibly efficient and constantly improving network of lifts that will get you to your favourite runs in no time. The added bonus is that, unlike other resorts,
it’s incredibly easy to find your way around at Whistler. Reason number two for choosing Whistler—incredible variety. Whistler is also marvellous from a logistic perspective—in other words, getting there is a breeze! After a direct flight to Vancouver, shuttle to Whistler, settling into your choice of the countless accommodations, and maybe a quick stint at the nearby grocery and liquor stores, you’ll be geared up for a fabulous week-long vacation in no time (and I didn’t even mention the fact that you don’t have to go through customs!). In fact, getting to Whistler is so easy that, I have, on more than one occasion, chosen to hop on a plane at the last minute, fast on the heels of a snowstorm heading West! And, with the possibility of snowstorms from November to April, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to head out and enjoy this little piece of heaven… whether for the first, 10th or 20th time! gendronski.com/en/whistler/ Watch the video

the wild side of skiing By Ghyslain L’Heureux Ski Travel Specialist

he first time I visited Revelstoke in 2009, the mountain was just in the early stages of development. Its potential was largely untapped and the village was barely a rough draft of what it is today. Regardless, the first thing that hit me at the time was the enormity of the mountain… and I hadn’t even stepped out of the car yet! Six years and millions of dollars later, Revelstoke is now an exceptionally modern resort that somehow still manages to remain true to its wild side. In the morning, you can hear the sound of helicopters taking off and dynamite exploding. The terrain is steep, the bowls humongous and the glades simply perfect. You can see trees for miles—with just the right amount of space in between to let you weave in and out, and thinning out at the base to let everyone through. And, of course, there is massive powder for you to enjoy carving up! When I was there, it hadn’t snowed for days and the temperature at the base of the mountain was almost 10 degrees Celsius—and, still, the bowls and glades were packed with tons of light snow. Those looking for a colossal playground and crazy amounts of snow are sure to find what they are looking for at Revelstoke.
the mountain completely to the right when you get off the Stoke lift. The side-country also offers great terrain. You can easily go from glades to groomers at Revelstoke, but I won’t hide the fact that this is some pretty intense skiing. If you’re comfortable on all sorts of trails, you might want to ask the locals about some of the best places. You’ll always find someone—maybe even sitting beside you in the gondola—who’s ready to tell you about some secret powder spot. A 20-minute climb just about anywhere will take you to beautiful cornices for jumping, and to mounds of untouched snow. And, for you thrill seekers who always like to kick things up a notch, Revelstoke also has cat-skiing and heliskiing options. If you’ve thought about it and you’re still on the fence, just talk to someone who has had the chance to do it and I’m sure you’ll be convinced. After all, there aren’t too many places where you get to enjoy 500,000 acres of heliskiing terrain! So, take advantage while you’re here! gendronski.com/en/revelstoke/ Watch the video

There is, however, also plenty of terrain for those who aren’t experts. The Ripper Chair sector has a few intermediate runs and, under the Stoke lift, you’ll find several beginner pistes as well. kick it up a notch! By Bianca Montpetit Ski Travel Consultant
K
nown as the Champagne Powder Capital of Canada, Kicking Horse has brought sheer joy and delight to expert skiers for the last 15 years. Located in the Purcell Mountains between Banff and Revelstoke, this resort enjoys a larger-than-life reputation thanks to its huge and exceptionally challenging terrain. During my stay at Kicking Horse, which I combined with Banff and Lake Louise as part of my ski safari, I had an amazing time—even though I am not an expert skier. After a few runs, I quickly realized that my sector of choice was the lower part of the mountain, aimed at beginner and intermediate skiers, rather than the top which caters to powder hounds in search of great couloirs (there are 85 in all!) and colossal bowls like the extraordinary Super Bowl added some 5 years ago. With only five lifts covering this expansive ski area, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the trail map in order to make the most of your day. Don’t be surprised if you experience varied conditions during the same descent. Also, in certain areas, it’s recommended you wear a backpack to hold your skis in order to safely get around. For skiers like me, runs like It’s a 10 (as in 10 km!) are a good challenge. You’ll feel the burn, believe me! After a few arduous runs, you’ll want to break for lunch at the everpopular Eagle’s Eye Restaurant at the summit. Its gourmet menu and panoramic views from the dining room are internationally renowned.

ver the last few years, I have been lucky enough to check off several places and experiences on my skier’s bucket list—from the Lofoten Islands in Norway to the Mer de Glace in Chamonix as well as Western Canada. One item on the list I never thought I’d check off though is heliskiing… much less before my 30th birthday!
Heliskiing
Photo: Alain Sleigher Photo - www.alainsleigher.com
Last winter, my dream came true as I made my way to Revelstoke, considered the heliskiing capital of Canada, if not the world! I had managed to land a job with Selkirk Tangiers as part of the reservations team. Along with this fabulous job came the opportunity to join heliskiing groups on my days off. To say that I was the envy of my family and friends is an understatement!

During my time here, I have realized that heliskiing is about more than just the vertical drop or the number of descents—it’s really about the overall experience. You get to ski optimal conditions thanks to a guide who evaluates weather forecasts and maps while busily working out the perfect plan for the day. You have the chance to meet people from all over the world who share your passion for skiing. Plus, you are treated to stunning views from the helicopter, especially as it takes you over the clouds to reveal mountain peaks as far as the eye can see. On top of it all, you’ll eat a meal fit for a king as you sit by the foot of a glacier or at the bottom of a valley near the river. Best of all, you will be all smiles, all day long—mostly because skiing this kind of powder and being the first to make tracks has no price tag. I can fondly remember one particular day when the helicopter let us off on top of a glacier after which we enjoyed an amazing descent that lasted over an hour and 15 minutes! After that, we were clearly ready for our gourmet mountain lunch. Let me tell you, nothing is more satisfying than a nice hot bowl of soup after an intense run down the mountain.

I also learned, that in order to enjoy a successful day of heliskiing, you have to be physically fit, start off the season with lots of resort skiing, and have lots of experience skiing powder. You also have to be honest about your skill level and carefully heed your guide’s advice. The truth is, if you are going to invest in a heliskiing vacation, you might as well come prepared. After all, it’s not the kind of trip you’re going to take every year.

week-long heliskiing trip in a 5-star lodge located 1,000 km from home is not exactly the type of vacation every powder hound can afford. But, spending a few days in a cat-skiing lodge is pretty much within anyone’s reach—plus, it can be an amazing trip and the perfect getaway from it all.

I would probably compare the experience to the time I spent at camp when I was a kid: a few days in the woods, little communication with the outside world, and the only priority was playing outside. Of course, if we’re talking about the Monashee Powder Snowcats (MPS), my comparison to the camp experience pretty much ends there. First off, here all the playing is done in the snow. Plus, your group will consist of no more than 20 guests at a time, the food is spectacular, you won’t have to make your bed and, needless to say, there is enough hot water for everyone!

My friends and I had been talking about this kind of ski lodge vacation for years when we finally made our reservations. Of course, as plans always need to be made in advance, we would have to spend the next year daydreaming and eagerly anticipating all the amazing places MPS would take us skiing. And, let me just say, this place definitely lived up to our expectations. With 17,000 acres and a limited number of skiers (only as many as two snowcats can fit), MPS ensures there is enough snow for everyone and a good variety of terrain. You can carve up some great technical lines in wide-open areas or on narrow pistes through black tree silhouettes. No matter what your preference, you will always enjoy masses of incredibly light powder in the Monashee Mountains. And, the owners of the Monashee Powder Snowcats seem to have found the perfect spot for their operation—and it only keeps getting bigger and better, year after year. After a day spent carving up some glorious powder, it’s back to the lodge where the fun continues with a soak in the hot tub, an après-ski drink and a delectable meal. As you would expect, the food is fabulous and enjoyed in the best way possible—in good company! There’s nothing like swapping stories of your day’s adventures in a cozy pair of slippers while sipping a glass of wine. But, of course, there’s no lingering until the wee hours of the morning here—lights out comes quickly to those who want to hit the slopes early the next day! And, after a peaceful nights’ sleep in the tranquility of nature, the adventure continues. I sure wish every morning started out this way!

warm and friendly natural beauty, RED Mountain has nothing to envy of the other superstar British Columbia resorts that regularly grace the covers of ski magazines. Located at the heart of Powder Highway, near Rossland, this resort enjoys an average annual snowfall of 7.6 metres. A generous amount of powder covers this vast playground of 4,200 acres of skiable terrain, 2,700 of which are accessible via seven lifts. Recognized for its legendary glades bursting at the seams with tall coniferous trees as well as its triple black diamond runs, RED made some major additions to its back yard in 2013. Line-ups were already practically non-existent at this resort—and, since these expansions, crowd-phobic skiers are twice as happy! Red and Granite mountains now also have a third player on their team—Grey Mountain— increasing the total number of trails from 83 to 110. Much like Granite Mountain, Grey offers 360-degree descents from the summit. Serviced by a quadruple chair lift, this new territory provides advanced skiers with over 860 metres of vertical terrain over 1,000 acres. At the top, a snow cat takes more daring types to the wide-open spaces

of the Monashee Mountain Range. Thanks to these recent developments, RED now ranks as one of the top 20 resorts in North America. If you aren’t an expert, there is still plenty for you to enjoy at RED, with 20% of the mountain’s territory aimed at beginners and close to one third of runs geared towards intermediate skiers. This is where you might regularly cross paths with RCMP officers who patrol the area on skis or snowboards.
Rossland, located about 3 km from the mountain. You won’t find a McDonald’s nearby, nor will you be able to satisfy your craving for a double-double at Timmy’s—but one thing you will find (including a Subway restaurant) in this small town of 3,500 is endless charm. gendronski.com/en/red-mountain/ 18 % 31 %

a little-known piece of heaven by Jean-Luc Brassard Special Contributor and Olympic Champion
T
his little-known piece of heaven came as a real surprise to me, not to mention an absolute treat! Before even hitting the slopes, I soaked up some of the most idyllic mountain views I had ever seen while driving along the access road from Nelson. Once at the mountain, though, the two somewhat rustic-looking lifts had me wondering what I had gotten myself into— but, I consoled myself knowing I could snap a prize picture of my fabulous surroundings from the summit! I am happy to report that I was incredibly mistaken! The lifts at Whitewater may not be the latest and greatest, but the skiing itself is simply out of this world! All three sides of the mountain offer long, undulating runs— but what most impressed me was the forest of beautiful, tall trees. What a thrill to weave in and out of those massive beauties! Easily accessible, this forest is also chock-full of peaks and valleys, and other great surprises that will keep you wanting more. Favourably located in the Selkirk Mountains, where the snow is dry and abundant, Whitewater is continually replenishing its stores of white gold. It’s always great fun to explore and discover little hidden spots in the
forest where the wind-sheltered snow is as deep as it gets! Another detail worth noting: traverse routes at the base of the mountain will always easily get you to the closest lift. Of course, Whitewater isn’t meant for every type of skier. If showing off your latest fashion accessories is part of your enjoyment, then Whitewater may not be your kind of mountain. This resort is intended for hard-core ski fanatics whose enthusiasm for the sport is wildly contagious and makes this jewel of a mountain shine ever brighter! When it’s time for lunch, hurry over to the mountain restaurant, where the exquisite cuisine alone is worth the trip. It’s so good, in fact, that most visitors end up purchasing the chef’s recipe book to take home as a souvenir! Created by ski aficionados who exude passion for the sport, Whitewater is all about skiing at its purest. The lifts may not be the fastest, but don’t forget that your legs may very well need the rest in between runs! gendronski.com/en/whitewater/

ooking for a destination where you won’t have to compromise on anything? I’ve got one word for you: Fernie!
Far too few people have had the chance to discover this spectacular mountain. Although located quite a distance from the bigger city centres, this is one place that has got it all! For starters, Fernie has 6 bowls to choose from. With a yearly average accumulation of 11 metres of thick, light snow, just imagine all the powder you can tear up! What’s more, these bowls are suitable for skiers of all levels, including beginners and intermediates, who can enjoy some of the more mellow runs Fernie has to offer. So, everyone gets to enjoy the view from the top. Speaking of runs, Fernie has quite the selection to choose from: 142 in all, without counting the off-piste trails. Plus, making it from one side of the mountain to another is a breeze—you won’t have to waste precious ski time taking one lift after another. Over and above the skiing, the Town of Fernie itself is a place you are sure to enjoy. Soak in the warm, friendly atmosphere as you share an ice-cold pitcher of Kokanee on the terrace at the Griz Bar. There is also a wide array of ski-in/ski-out condos to meet your accommodation needs and help you make the most of your time in Fernie. Of course, a quick jaunt outside of town is always fun, and I promise you won’t regret it! The restaurants may not seem exactly “five-star” from the outside but we all know you can’t judge a book by its cover! In fact, this is the Western Canadian destination that most satisfied the foodie in me! I highly recommend the Curry Bowl for its unbelievably delectable Indian dishes and Yamagoya Sushi for those who are into Japanese cuisine. It was so good, we actually went there twice in four days! gendronski.com/en/fernie/ Photo: Henry Georgi

fter breakfast at the condo, just throw on your skis and, before you know it, you’ll be at the lift. And the best part of all is… no line-ups! Just Panorama’s warm, friendly staff waiting to greet you with a cheery “Good morning!” The summit brings you to 7,792 feet where the view is simply astounding. The surrounding landscape provides breathtaking 360-degree views definitely worthy of a PANORA-mic picture! Before embarking on that first descent, you can warm up or energize with a steaming cup of coffee or hot chocolate at Summit Hut. That is, unless you’d rather come back for lunch and enjoy one of their famous Smokies!
No matter when you’re ready for that first run… I guarantee you’re in for a real treat. 4,000 feet of incredible vertical! Expert skiers might want to explore Taynton Bowl (terrain that used to be exclusively reserved for rk heliski) while less daring types can enjoy a smooth groomer or gently weave through the glades. Panorama boasts incredibly vast terrain that is perfectly adapted to everyone’s needs. By the time you’re ready to take a break, you’re bound to only be halfway down your first run— as you take in the spectacular surroundings, you’ll get the impression that you have the mountain to yourself! That feeling of solitude stems partly from the fact that Panorama is much less crowded than other centres located closer to big urban centres. Even after a huge snowfall, you’re sure to be able to lay down the first tracks more than once in the same week—and even the same day!
Photo: Kari Medig
After a quick break halfway down, you’ll be ready to continue on your merry way, gently cruising on wide open groomers or shaking things up by hitting the off-piste areas. One thing is certain, as the day wears on, you are sure to appreciate how easy it is to take a quick break thanks to the ski-in/ski-out facilities.
As fabulous as the skiing is, however, Panorama is truly so much more than just a great ski resort. It’s a charming little town replete with boutiques, a variety of restaurants, pubs, cafés as well as a massage centre, daycare and ski school. Oh, and let’s not forget the thermal pools which we guarantee you are going to love! There are endless activities to

choose from and there is always something going on in this wonderful and very familyfriendly resort. When the sun sets, it’s time to head off for an ice-cold beer at the T-Bar. Or, if you are the more adventurous type and in the mood for something truly unique, you can head to the summit to enjoy an après-ski cheese fondue and then make your way back down, headlamp lighting the way, for a final, adrenaline-pumping run! …discover Panorama with me!

At a faraway glance, you might not quite understand why this mountain is called Big White—but, I guarantee that once you get up close and personal, it will become abundantly clear where the name comes from!
W
hat a joy to discover this huge mountain and its vast round summit located above the tree line. The pure white as far (and as high) as the eye can see is no doubt the inspiration for Big White’s name. A choice of three lifts– the Falcon Chair, the Cliff Chair and the Alpine T-Bar—will take you to the top of this colossal almost-mythical giant that opens up to the horizon. No matter which of the lifts you choose, you will be treated to jaw-dropping views on the way down. Having skied dozens of

mountains around the globe, I thought I had seen it all—but, clearly, I was wrong. The landscape at Big White was unlike anything I had ever laid eyes on before—it’s somewhat reminiscent of the Valley of the Ghosts at Monts-Valin, only on a much bigger scale! At Big White, a huge army of ghosts stands guard over endless square kilometres of the mammoth summit. You’ll be absolutely blown away by the surroundings, especially as you ski through the giant phantoms, each one uniquely sculpted by the winds and precipitation. To get a better view of these superb figures, I let loose at the top of the Falcon Chair as I made my way along the ridge above the Grizzly run. My telemark skis made gliding along the flat terrain a breeze, allowing me to drift off into quiet contemplation as I weaved in and out of the great ghosts. It’s an experience I will never forget. Although I was the most impressed by the awesome snow ghosts, there is lots more to Big White than these cool phantoms. For starters, half the terrain here is considered intermediate. Plus, there are incredibly well organized supersonic lifts that will get you up to the smaller summit lifts in no time flat. To the delight of glade lovers, there is backcountry terrain aplenty from one end of the mountain to the other. Big White 23 24

located farther away from the Pacific coast, which means it is less vulnerable than its more Western counterpart to the unexpected warm winds that can disrupt the ski season. Because it kicks things off early in the year and gets an average annual snowfall of 6 metres, it’s no wonder Sun Peaks is the training ground of choice for close to 25 competitive teams in November and December. Sun Peaks is a mega resort with a truly intimate feel. It is also abundantly clear the village here was meticulously planned out. The architecture was inspired by South Tyrol, with its charming tile roofs and colourful facades. You can choose from nine very different hotels, all of which provide ski-in/ski-out access. And, as far as restaurants go, there are 24 options available to you as well as a variety of small cafés and fast food places that are sure to please everyone’s palates. Located one hour from the Kamloops airport, Sun Peaks is also the stomping grounds of choice for Nancy Greene and her husband, Al Raines, Mayor of the municipality. Their connection to Sun Peaks is undeniably strong and they are always eager to share their love of the place. In fact, whenever they can, they are thrilled to enjoy a run or two with the resort’s visitors. Where else can you say you’ve had the chance to follow in the footsteps of—or, should I say, ski in the tracks of?—an Olympic Champion? gendronski.com/en/sun-peaks/ Watch the video

Best known for its climate (the mildest in all of Canada), the Okanagan Valley is home to several ski resorts that have nothing to envy of their countless Western Canadian neighbours.

n the northern part of the valley, in the backcountry behind the City of Vernon, a long road weaves and climbs, higher and higher, taking you all the way to the amazing Silver Star resort, perched at 1,609 metres in altitude. All of the quaint little buildings make the place look like the Wild West— only slightly more colourful! This town is literally painted in the most vibrant yellows, blues, greens and reds.

Provided that the snow is abundant during your visit, you’ll have the chance to tackle an impressive amount of steep glades where you can lay down some tracks as you weave through thousands of those iconic coniferous trees. At the top of Powder Gulch Express, don’t miss the restaurant with a century-old look and fantastic food. But, as delicious as it is, make sure you don’t overdo it. There won’t be any time for digesting as you take the lift back to the top!

SKI SAFARIS
why COMPROMISe? by Alexis De Gheldere Outdoor Travel Journalist
seasoned travel consultants are on hand to help.
Sometimes you can choose—not to choose! With so many fantastic destinations available, why not group a few together and treat yourself to a real ski extravaganza? There’s nothing better than hitting several resorts within a single week of adventure!
All you have to do is decide where you want to go and your consultant will take care of the rest—flight, car rental, lift tickets and accommodations—while keeping your budget in mind. Certain itineraries are an obvious choice, since many resorts are grouped together in these areas. For example, you might want to combine Sun Peaks, Silver Star and Big White for a ski vacation to the heart of the Okanagan Valley in the south-central portion of BC.
V
isiting several resorts means you’ll have to move around a bit more once you get to your destination, but all the fun will be worth it! If this is your first ski trip, going to several resorts can also help you decide which particular one you like best—that way, you can go back and explore it further on your next vacation. Other than the iconic Western Canadian ski resorts you’ll discover during your stay, you might also want to add a day of cat-skiing and heliskiing to your itinerary. The great thing about a trip like this is that you can adjust your rhythm based on each resort and hit more runs at those that suit you best. In short, Gendron Travel wants you to enjoy a customized ski vacation, and our
If you are so inclined, you could always add Revelstoke and Kicking Horse—located closer to the Alberta border—as part of the same trip. Although this particular jaunt only includes two ski resorts, they are actually so big, there is no way you’ll be able to do it all. The two other typically offered ski safaris require a little more moving around, but also cover a lot more ground. The first of the two features Red Mountain and Whitewater and finishes off at Revelstoke. This might be the kind of trip you are looking for if you prefer a more laid-back atmosphere. In fact, Whitewater is as easy-going as they
come, and the snow here is endless! Add Revelstoke and Red Mountain to the mix and you’ve got a perfect combination. Gendron’s Grands Classiques ski safari allows you to discover Kicking Horse, Panorama and Fernie, three enormous ski areas with crazy steeps and an abundance of natural snow. Colossal bowls, intense glades, narrow couloirs and steeps by the dozen along with endless moguls and backcountry terrain. Kicking Horse alone has 85 narrow couloirs accessible by lift. Panorama, for its part, is one of Western Canada’s best-kept secrets. Calgarians have known about it for years, and now it’s your turn to discover this bucket-list destination! Another advantage Panorama has to offer is its proximity to Calgary. No need to travel through Kelowna and take a bunch of side roads like you do with the three other ski safaris described above. A three-hour drive and you’ll be at the heart of the mountains, enjoying skiing at its best. Now, all that’s left for you to do is choose between all of these unbeatable ski safari options!

R
esearch shows that during a typical winter’s day at a destination resort like Mont Tremblant, a 90-minute drive north of Montreal, there are “six hours of skiing, eight hours of sleeping and several hours of ‘What should we do next?’” Its casino and other venues like Aquaclub La Source, movie theatre, live acts on Place SaintBernard, skating rink, and tubing are part of Tremblant’s answer to ensure guests can fill their free time with enjoyable activities. Besides that, Tremblant’s purpose-built fourseason village boasts enough restaurants, bars, cafés, retail shops and additional venues to maintain the excitement. As added value, guests staying at participating hotels get to enjoy the Tremblant Privileges pass, which allows
them to be at the top of the gondola by 8:00 a.m. and enjoy one or two runs before the regular guests board the lifts at 8:30 a.m. Believe me, this makes a huge difference on a powder morning! Other perks include skating at the rink in the lower village by Chapelle Saint-Bernard and tube sliding at the Équilibre area next to the Fairmont Tremblant. These evening activities start at 6:00 p.m. and are very popular with families who have young kids or teenagers. Tremblant’s skiing is extensive but, if you can manage it, try to choose a mid-week stay. Otherwise, to avoid congestion, ski the top half to mid-mountain. While on the hill, a favourite pit stop of mine is Le Refuge du Trappeur located on Versant Soleil. There’s nothing like sitting by its woodstove and enjoying a nice, hot coffee or a hearty soup. Don’t miss it! gendronski.com/en/tremblant/ 29 30

t took a while, but the sleeping giant of a mountain, Le Massif de Charlevoix, located about 75 minutes east of Québec City with its international airport, has finally shed its reputation of “a tough mountain catering only to the strongest skiers.” This misconception stems from its humble beginnings in the 1980s, when the slopes were ungroomed and its very few runs were serviced by a school bus. We all know how first impressions can last, and many still don’t consider driving or exploring any farther than Mont-Sainte-Anne. Thankfully, things have now changed by leaps and bounds, due in large part to the international profile and the vision of Le Massif’s owners. The mountain is now a vast, modern family ski area, providing all the amenities that today’s discerning skiers and riders expect. Over the past few years, the resort has added a gondola, opened the new Camp Boule sector, further developed the off-piste skiing sector on Mont à Liguori,

And, of course, the slopeside village is certainly not worth writing home about but, on the plus side, everyone knows everyone at the cafeteria or the bar during après-ski festivities. Welcome to Sutton! This skier’s paradise, known for its superb glades and natural snow, is also one of the most authentic ski resorts you’ll ever come across.

Interesting fact: Sutton, along with Jay Peak and Owl’s Head, is located in a very unique corridor that gets hit with mysterious isolated snowstorms. The snow at Sutton is so extreme that, in 2015, I actually experienced glorious mid-winter powder conditions… in April!

ski trip to Japan is a truly unique experience, and one that requires as much preparation as possible. In addition to the 14-hour flight and the ensuing jet lag, you’ll also have to prepare for the culture shock and language barrier. Another thing you should expect to see in Japan is snow—and lots of it! The Town of Hakuba, located in the heart of the Japanese Alps, in Nagano Prefecture, is the best place to indulge is some fluffy white stuff. The average annual snowfall here is over 11 metres. Hakuba is a mere 90-minute ride by Shinkansen (high-speed train) via Tokyo Station in the heart of the megapolis. Once in Nagano, a 40-minute drive or bus ride will get you to your hotel at the foot of the slopes. My choice of accommodations was the Tokyu Hotel, a modern facility boasting

two restaurants (Japanese and French) and shuttle service that will take you right to the main gondola. Happo Village, with its restaurants and boutiques, is a great slopeside option. Over the backdrop of a gorgeous blue sky, the Japanese Alps are absolutely majestic as you look out atop Happo-One—host to the alpine skiing and ski-jumping events during the Nagano Olympic Games in 1998. With the Olympic rings still displayed throughout the site, it’s almost as if the place is frozen in time. During my visit over the 2014–15 Holiday season, the resort had gotten over 4 metres of snow and conditions were just perfect on this vertical drop of 1,071 metres. There was so much snow, in fact, that the grooming machines had to clear out the space under several chair lifts to keep them running properly. There are plenty of groomed runs to enjoy here. But, because it snows often and heavily, you should expect 32 33

to tackle some fabulous moguls in the afternoon. The powder was so deep and light, making fresh tracks was a breeze—even with the Holiday crowd! Although there are few marked trails, they are incredibly wide and provide 543 acres of skiable terrain for you to enjoy. However, I strongly recommend a guide if you are looking to explore. Certain off-piste sectors here are indeed very much appealing and are always better tackled with the company of local experts who are knowledgeable about the snow cover conditions. The North Face of Happo One (nicknamed Happy Face!) is, without a doubt, the best place for adventurous types to let loose and enjoy some amazing bowls and dizzying runs. Be aware, however, that this is considered an unpatrolled area! After an intense day on the hill, it’s time for a little après-ski enjoyment in the heart of

kiing in Japan is an incredibly unique experience we guarantee you’ll never forget.
The charm of the Japanese culture and the sheer joy of skiing some gorgeous powder are just two of the reasons you are sure to love a ski vacation in Japan. Your trip will start off with a few nights at one of the downtown core’s magnificent hotels. This will give you a chance to explore Tokyo and discover all that Japan’s modern culture has to offer. Visit the most popular neighbourhoods or go off the beaten path— the choice is yours! Indulge in some local delicacies or try foods you’ve never seen or heard of before! This brief stay in Tokyo will give you enough time to shake off the jet lag, and satisfy your curiosity for Japanese culture before you are ready to hit the slopes. Next stop: Niseko on the Island of Hokkaido! You’ve probably heard all about the everpopular “japow”—or Japanese powder— and now is your chance to experience it

for yourself. You’ll have a blast skiing this superbly light and incredibly abundant snow. The cold winds from Siberia pick up moisture over the Sea of Japan to form snow clouds that leave an impressive blanket of japow on the mountain, day after day, all winter long.
Both of these mountains are exceptionally well groomed, and every run will take you back to the highly efficient chairlifts or gondolas. Just use the easy-to-follow signs to find your favourite runs and enjoy a day of skiing at temperatures oscillating around –10 degrees Celcius.
Niseko offers endless fields of powder accessible through a gated system which strictly controls access to individual areas based on the day’s conditions. And, the morning after a good snowstorm, don’t go searching for the nice mechanically groomed runs—tracks will already be made for you by the many, many skiers who have tackled the mountain first.
The time spent on the slopes is only part of what makes this vacation so wonderful. You’ll also enjoy some fantastic après-ski time, starting with a dip in the hotel’s Japanese hot spring—or, onsen—which you’ll be addicted to in no time. After a relaxing soak, you can choose to dine at one of the hotel’s restaurants or take a shuttle and make your way off to discover cuisine as varied and enjoyable as the day’s adventures. gendronski.com/en/niseko/
For a change of scenery and the chance to experience a playfully unique ski resort, you might want to spend a day at Rutsusu—a tremendously vast ski area which, although lower in elevation, is known for its wooded valleys offering practically uninterrupted access to that fabulous japow. If your visit coincides with a recent snowfall (which is very likely), you will be treated to endless hillsides of untouched snow just waiting to be explored.

or many, Alaska brings to mind images of cruises, oil rigs and crab fishing. But, true carving enthusiasts know that Alaska is also synonymous with the most majestic mountains in the world, superb tracks, and snow of the finest quality. I’m not ashamed to say that the first time I skied Girdwood in the Chugach Mountains, I was so blown away by the place, it took me six months to recover! First of all, it is truly a feast for the eyes. The scenery is absolutely awe-inspiring: endless high snowy peaks, glaciers at every turn, the nearby ocean, the Aurora Borealis, gigantic coniferous trees… before I even hit the slopes, I had already fallen head over heels for Alaska. Of course, the skier in me was also completely spellbound by the place. Alyeska, Alaska’s main ski resort, located in Girdwood, has some pretty intense terrain, including some fantastic steep and deep runs. Snow accumulation is generally abundant here
too. The North Face, for example, gets very little sun exposure—which translates into some crazy big snow! This sector is a long and continuous run that takes you back to the Alyeska Hotel. You can make your way down on a smooth cruiser like the Autobahn or take a double black diamond run like the Christmas Chute or the New Year’s Chute. The descent is pretty wild and, in good conditions, it’s the type of run that makes you feel like you’re dragging all the snow down with you. Pure skiing enjoyment! My second ultimate thrill was cat-skiing with Chugach Powder Guides (CPG). The immense terrain here is tremendously varied, offering a mix of more wooded sectors, wide open fields and some highly challenging areas… all just steps away from your hotel. In fact, Hotel Alyeska provides ski-in/ski-out as well as cat ski-in/ski-out accommodations. When a glorious winter storm leaves two or three feet of fresh, new snow on the Chugach Mountains (which, I might add, is not a rare occurrence), cat-skiing here is a sheer delight. With its breathtaking beauty and amazing skiing, how could I help but fall in love with Alyeska? What’s more, the village of Girdwood and its people are absolutely charming. They made me feel right at home, from the moment I arrived on that very first trip. And, they have welcomed me with open 11 % 52 % 37 %

arms every time since. The staff at the resort and the hotel, the town’s restaurant owners and all of their fellow Alaskans always make you feel like a long-lost friend they have been eagerly waiting to see again. In short, Girdwood offers all the advantages of an authentic village resort—welcoming, not too crowded and, no over-the-top bling! At the same time, you’ll also find luxury accommodations and excellent restaurants with well-stocked wine cellars. The best part is, everything is just steps away from a great resort with challenging terrain as well as cat-skiing and heliskiing options. For some intense skiing in a spectacular setting (and some luxurious indulgences too), there is no place like Girdwood. gendronski.com/en/alaska/

f you’re a skier, you’ve no doubt heard all about the unbelievable snow in Utah. You probably also know that this destination is renowned for its practically perfect ski conditions and superb mountain stats. So, what are you waiting for? We guarantee you’ll enjoy some of the most incredible runs of your life—and, as an added bonus, getting to Utah is a breeze! There are tons of flights to choose from, and its just a 10-minute hop from the airport to the city. Few people know this…but, in the late 80s (before I started working at Gendron), I spent three winters in Salt Lake City as a destination rep as part of Normand Perrier’s team. And, I have to say, these were definitely the best years of my skiing career.

Part of my job involved visiting countless destinations around the world and, over time, I grew to have my favourites. But, despite it all, when it’s time for me to book my vacation, I tend to go back to my first love—Utah! After all, just like my customers, I know that you just can’t get snow like this anywhere else! Plus, Utah just feels like home. I know every inch of the mountains, all the best spots for backcountry skiing and, of course, it’s the one place I’m guaranteed to need my skins! Salt Lake City is the only place in the world where you’ll find 9 major ski resorts less than 40 km from the city. Not only are there lots of options to choose from—each one is as different as the next, with its own unique personality and style. If hip-deep powder is what you’re dreaming of, then search no more!

magical and historical by Marie-eve Jarry Special Contributor and freelance Journalist
I remember my visit to Park City like it was yesterday. It was midDecember and the charming downtown core was alive with Holiday magic. The streets were lined with twinkling lights and a light dusting of snow covered the sidewalks. Though I didn’t yet know it, this first impression would set the tone for the rest of my stay, and for the entire ski season!
T
he atmosphere that reigns over the historical town of Park City is a true testament to an era gone by. Precisely 147 years ago, in 1868, U.S. soldiers discovered rich silver veins in the hills and quickly settled in what would become a mining boom town, building houses and cabins, including several along the mountain. Not surprisingly, these early miners often used skis as a means of transportation to the mines! Many historical buildings, including the Whisky Distillery, still stand in Park City’s downtown core. You’ll also see remnants of the mining era in the Payday/Town, Crescent, Silverlode/Bonanza and Thaynes/Motherlode sectors. Keep your eyes peeled for these vestiges of the old mining days.
Photo: dancampbellphotography.com
When it comes to skiing, Park City may not be the highest peak or the steepest incline you’ve ever tackled, but it is definitely one of the most incredibly well maintained! Runs are groomed several times a day so that you can enjoy fresh corduroy on a total of 116 trails. A true powder hound’s dream! We are, after all, in the middle of Utah—renowned for having the lightest snow around! In addition to the runs are the spectacular bowls, where you can get a taste of that famous champagne powder Utah is legendary for. This is definitely one for the bucket list! My suggestion for your stay in Park City is: Go big, or go home! If you’re going to indulge in this amazing powder, go all the way and splurge on some slopeside accommodations. With the vast array of ski-in/ski-out condos to choose from, you are sure to find something that suits your needs. Plus, if you stay at the foot of the hills, you can take advantage of the Town Lift, which will get you to Historic Main Street in no time flat. In a mere five minutes, you can go from sitting by your condo fireplace to sitting at the restaurant table—an added bonus you won’t want to do without!

ucked between Snake River, a few national parks, elk refuges and various parts of the American Rockies, the valley of Jackson Hole is, quite literally and geographically speaking, a hole right in the middle of Wyoming. Sure, with a population of less than 10,000 inhabitants, the Town of Jackson Hole is far from being a metropolis—but even if it seems to be lost in the middle of nowhere, when it comes to ski vacations, Jackson Hole truly stands out from the rest. And, with good reason. Jackson Hole seemingly has it all: steep incline, a long skiable vertical, big, beautiful snow… and a Western town that just oozes charm.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s (JHMR) reputation is firmly established. With a huge percentage of runs considered difficult or very difficult and its infamous Corbet’s Couloir, this resort is known for its extremely challenging terrain. JHMR also boasts the longest vertical drop in the U.S. as well as great snow accumulation. As great as its numbers are, there is, of course much more to Jackson Hole than statistics. True, there is lots of advanced or expert terrain here. But, unlike other resorts, JHMR likes to groom several of its double blue runs, making them somewhat less intimidating. If you are accustomed to skiing the typically eastern American walls of ice, you are sure to find some great slopes here, steeper than your Quebec mountains but with soft, groomed natural snow.
Something else the numbers won’t reveal is that, though you can ski Jackson Hole’s long vertical drop in sections, you can also enjoy it in a straight line from the summit to the base. A good run down from the top of the gondola all the way down to the base is certainly a good way to warm up those quadriceps! Or, you could choose to ski down from the tram—more than 1,200 metres down, practically no false flats, and just turn after glorious turn! Speaking of the tram, this amazing machine is really quite efficient: 100 skiers, 9 minutes, 1,260 metres of vertical… but, the real appeal of this bright red box comes from the endless possibilities which open to you once you get to the top. You can take Rendezvous Bowl towards the Hobacks or the Sublette sector, or, if you are adequately prepared, you always have access to some adrenaline-pumping backcountry skiing. After a big snowstorm, make sure you go up with the first tram in the morning—I guarantee it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. The atmosphere is electric as you eagerly wait for the thrill of picking out that first intense powder run of the day. It’s such an awesome feeling… you’ll want to do it every morning. And, let me just say, it is certainly one of the main things that attracts me to Jackson Hole year after year! gendronski.com/en/jackson-hole/

Needless to say, there are also lots of ungroomed trails to choose from. Something the statistics won’t tell you is that several of these great trails are sheltered from the sun, which means the snow stays fresh longer. The Tower 3, Alta and Paint Brush chutes are only a few examples of this excellent configuration.

ive summits, 187 runs, 34 lifts and a neighbouring resort (Keystone) where you can indulge in some great night skiing. Clearly Breckenridge—or, Breck, for short—has enough to keep you busy for at least a week. Not surprisingly, this western playground, located a two-hour drive from the Denver Airport, has become North America’s darling ski destination—a title it shares with another Colorado resort: Vail. Every year, over 1.6 million visitors flock to Breck to tear up the slopes. It’s hard to believe that, just 50 years ago, Breckenridge was something of a ghost town. Since 2013, skiers have been blessed with a choice of not four, but five, mountains as well as a vertical drop of over 1,000 metres at this Colorado ski utopia. Peak 6 is the latest addition, joining Peak 7, Peak 8, Peak 9 and Peak 10 as part of this vast ski area. A third of this destination (29%) is mechanically groomed while the rest is left to Mother Nature, who graciously bestows 7 metres of snow upon this resort annually. This gift from above is, as you can imagine, happily accepted by the powder hounds who frequent Breckenridge. Close to 40% of the resort here is located above the tree line, resulting in a dozen or so huge bowls.
Breckenridge colorado
Most of these colossal snow gardens can even be accessed with little effort, particularly in the Peak 7 and 8 zones. These couloirs are serviced by the highest lift in North America—the Imperial Express SuperChair, which will take you up 3,913 metres. From there, you can soak up the awe-inspiring views of a dozen of Colorado’s 53 mountains reaching close to 4,500 metres in altitude. And since we’re on the topic of altitude, you should also note that the base of Breckenridge is located at 2,900 metres above sea level. As such, be aware that you may experience certain symptoms—lack of appetite, difficulty breathing, headaches and insomnia—while adjusting to the difference. Make sure you stay well hydrated and go easy on the après-ski celebrations to make sure altitude sickness doesn’t prevent you from enjoying all the action this charming old mining town has to offer after sundown.

much more than the back bowls by Robert choquette Special Contributor
Every year, like clockwork, nine of my ski buddies and I make our yearly quest to Vail, hoping to get into shape before the start of our upcoming club race season.
G
ranted, mid-December is early for perfect snow coverage but Vail is, after all, one of the most dependable early-snow destinations due to its high elevation. The village itself lies at 2,484 m (8,120 ft.) and the highest lift-serviced point reaches 3,527 m (11,570 ft.). As a matter of fact, last year, 2014, the entire resort was open by mid-December! Vail is the largest single mountain resort in the United States and every time I go back, I just can’t get over how much terrain there is! Here are just a few of its impressive stats: the seven back bowls spread over 11.2 km from one end to the other; there are 193 runs and 5,289 acres of skiable terrain. The ski domain is spectacular and extensive and includes numerous long, steady pitched and immaculately groomed cruisers. We are always out by 8:30 in the morning and keep going until the day’s last run. We even have this friendly competition between
us to see who scores the most vertical using the EpicMix app that works with the ski pass’ tracking feature. We always head for the open back bowls and Blue Sky basin as soon as the patrol allows. Some are steep, others not as steep. Some have trees, others no trees. The only time we stop is to enjoy lunch at one of the on-mountain restaurants. Located at the top of China Bowl, the spacious Two Elk is a favorite; so is the Wildwood, at the top of Game Creek bowl, and then there’s Garfinkel’s or Red Lion back down in the valley. When it comes to accommodations, it seems I’ve tried them all over the years. I’ve stayed at the posh Sebastian Vail, located in Vail Village. Very nice and right where the action is come nightfall. Then, there’s the budget-conscious Evergreen Lodge, which straddles Vail Village and Lionshead but requires a longer walk to the lifts. And, of course, there’s the quaint Tivoli Lodge, which is just a short walk to the lifts servicing Vail Village. On this last trip, our group shared two, four-bedroom luxury condos at the Antlers at Vail, in Lionshead. We literally had countless restaurants to choose from, right outside our door in either Vail Village or Lionshead. At night, the streets come alive— but Vail is far from being a party town like 41 42

aspen snowmass colorado
mountain chic By Alexis De Gheldere Outdoor Travel Journalist
Everything, for everyone… that could definitely be Aspen’s slogan. From celebrities to ski bums to parents with kids in tow, everyone is sure to find exactly what they are looking for in Aspen.
W
ith lodging located right in the village of Aspen, the easiest and most obvious place to start is probably Aspen Mountain itself. To kick things off in style, take the km-long gondola ride up, and enjoy the long run down (more than a few minutes, we guarantee!). Although there are very few bowls the glades, which are just bursting at the seams with snow and most easily accessed via the Gentleman’s Ridge and the International run, are sure to please the most discerning of off-piste enthusiasts. The most satisfying backcountry is located to the left as you make your way down to Traynor Ridge. Though there are six official trails on the map, you can always go off and explore in search of some great fresh tracks. Come evening, enjoy the calm, quiet atmosphere that reigns in Aspen village as you linger in its many restaurants and boutiques. Those who love shopping will be well served by the countless brand name boutiques, testament to the village’s chic allure.
50 % 30 % 20 %
Located a little to the west of Aspen Mountain is Aspen Highland, a mountain the local ski bums flock to and a place I truly enjoy for its laid-back vibe. When you go, the very first area you want to head to is the Highland Bowl. A right of passage for any self-respecting skier, this bowl can only be reached via both a snowcat ride followed by a 40-minute hike up to the summit, at 4,000 metres. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, and the skiing is nothing short of phenomenal! All I can say is… WOW! Keep in mind, however, that this particular bowl is only accessible after a good snowstorm. Here’s hoping your timing is good! After Aspen Highland, if you venture farther West still (the resorts are so close together, it takes just a few minutes to get from one to the next), you’ll end up at Buttermilk, the most family-oriented of all the Aspen resorts. Despite its reputation as a milder mountain, the terrain here is still as steep as you’d find in Mont Tremblant. After all, this is Colorado! But, if you are in search of couloirs, steep glades and mind-blowing bowls, then I’d suggest you’d stick to mountains other than Buttermilk. Places like Snowmass will give you all the couloirs, moguls and thrills you have come to Aspen for. With all this in mind, you will definitely be able to enjoy a whole week without skiing the same tracks twice. Have a great trip!

big sky montana
larger than life! by Paul Dubrûle Ski Sales Director
I
can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard Bernard Gendron mention how great Big Sky is—how it’s his absolute favourite place and the greatest ski resort in the States! Needless to say, after hearing him talk, curiosity eventually got the best of me and I set off to discover this Wild West mountain. It wasn’t long before I understood Bernard’s fascination, and instantly fell in love with this amazing ski area—one of the biggest in the U.S. since joining forces with Moonlight Basin. It’s clear this place is all about the skiing. If you’re the type to take the first lift up in the morning and the last one down at 4:00, and get to bed early so you can rest up for the next day, then this is the place for you. However, if you’re into shopping and crazy après-ski parties, and love having a huge variety of restaurants and hotels to choose from, then I suggest you go elsewhere. On this first trip to Big Sky, I took my good friend Mario Daniel along. What we both found the most impressive was the sheer size of the mountain and the incredible steepness of the terrain. As an added bonus, several north-facing slopes mean that skiers can enjoy lots of snow late into the season. Experts will love the Lone Peak bowl while more adventurous types can revel in the

notorious Big Couloir. We personally headed to Headwaters Ridge, accessible on foot. The descents were certainly memorable, and many were actually pretty technical. Keep in mind that you’ll need some backcountry equipment essentials (shovel, AVD (avalanche victim detector) and probe) if you decide to venture out to certain sectors of the mountain. On the flip side, if you aren’t exactly the daredevil type, there are still lots of beginner and intermediate groomers for you to enjoy. With Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole just a few hours’ drive away, Big Sky can also serve as your base for a ski safari adventure. And with Yellowstone National Park also just steps away, you’ll definitely want to explore all of the nature this larger-than-life area has to offer. Fun fact: Big Sky is apparently one of U.S. President Barack Obama’s favourite resorts, and The Summit is generally his hotel of choice. Who knew? Photo: Big Sky Resort

n 1913, a young Norwegian named Carl Howelsen arrived at Steamboat… with a pair of skis and a whole lot of ambition. At the time, he probably could not imagine that, by organizing countless ski events and a winter carnival, he would change the face of this small Colorado town forever. One hundred years later, Steamboat is still defined as “a real ski town” alive with the energy of the innumerable skiers who visit this resort every winter. I love recommending Steamboat to families as well as glade enthusiasts and even those who, on ski trips, love to explore and discover vibrant little towns. We love Steamboat for the glorious glades that cover close to 50% of the mountain. Skiing the dense aspen forest is a pure delight, especially in the Christmas Tree Bowl or down the No Names chute—my favourites on Mount Werner. Those who love steeps and double blacks will enjoy the Morningside Park sector. Families will adore this resort for its great choice of intermediate runs, but especially because kids under 12 ski for free with a stay of 5 days or more. The mountain even has special stations where families can pick up little red wagons to help carry their equipment from one spot to the next. Steamboat resort is also located a stone’s throw from the downtown core, which has a total of 16,000 rooms for you to choose from. Or, you can opt to stay slopeside and use the free shuttle to get around. Either way, you are sure to get a kick out of the Wild West feel of the town, somewhat reminiscent of Fernie. The fact that ranches are as much a part of the local economy as the tourists certainly has something to do with it! I’m always impressed with the incredible line-up of activities this town of 12,000 has to offer. Guess this place lives by the mantra “eat, sleep, ski!”

ith the bounty of resorts that surrounds Lake Tahoe, it is clear that skiing is a vocation this region does not take lightly. The mountains that circle this beautiful blue jewel provide a tremendous variety of skiing options: while some are more family-oriented, others are truly internationally renowned and others still are favourite local hangouts. What these 16 (or is it 17… or 18?) resorts have in common are the stunning views. From several of the ski resorts, you can take in the incredibly breathtaking vistas of the lake itself—the biggest one in North America. At Heavenly, the panorama includes snow, spruce trees, sky-high peaks, the lake… and, believe it or not, the desert! It’s pretty extraordinary to see! From Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, you’ll almost feel like you can touch the water—simply amazing! And, at Kirkwood, what you’ll spot most often are the skull and crossbone signs warning you of the terrain’s difficulty. A pretty unique way of getting the message across, I’d say!
gendronski
Of all the places in the Lake Tahoe area, the northern sector is still my favourite. This is where you’ll find two resorts that have truly won me over. Although physically close to one another, these two are worlds apart. The first is Squaw Valley (far more commercial and touristy than my usual choices) which is a sublime mix of glades, inclines and groomed runs. Its huge and incredibly varied terrain, superb network of lifts and great slopeside action are reason alone for a visit to Lake Tahoe. Of course, the KT-22 and Palisades sectors make it all worth the trip too! The second is Alpine Meadows, which has more of a local vibe. This particular resort is a little smaller (if you consider 2,400 acres small!), but still has a nice variety of terrain, wide-open fields and narrow steeps. The trick here is to start the day on the front side to warm up your legs and end the day on the back side. Recently united by a merger, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows will eventually be connected by a lift that will easily get you from one to the other, making it one of the biggest skiable areas in the U.S. In the meantime, you can still enjoy these two fantastic resorts separately—or, better yet, 46 47

memories of chamonix by Eve Boissonnault Special Contributor
A
feeling of nostalgia sweeps over me as I fondly remember the moment when I first set foot on the Vallée des géants. I can still remember the sound of the ice on the Mer de Glace crackling in the distance. And the smell of the fresh alpine snow—pure, cold… and simply exhilarating! But, most of all, I can still feel the sense of exaltation, of high-flying adrenaline, that came over me as I stepped out of the cable car at Aiguille du midi, in the heart of Mont-Blanc, the very highest peak in all of Europe. I have been fortunate enough to ski at Chamonix twice. And, of all my ski vacations, I have to say that Chamonix is the one that carries the most vivid memories of sheer joy and discovery. I have no need for souvenirs and trinkets to remember this place—what I took home with me from these trips cannot be bought, and definitely has no price tag. The images in my mind and the feelings I am able to relive in my memory will stay with me for a lifetime. As I close my eyes and remember Chamonix, I see the dazzling midday sun, bright against a backdrop of royal blue sky. Behind me stand the massive, rugged mountains capped with sharp, jagged peaks, and before me lies an endless stretch of pure white snow. Just the thought of it still conjures up the most intense feeling of joy. I often think about the seemingly boundless Grands Montets ski area, especially the Argentière Glacier, which has some of the most easily accessible and mind-blowing off-piste skiing you have ever experienced anywhere. I think back to the neighbouring Brévent-Flégère area (and that fabulous lunch on the terrace at L’Adret de la Flégère where I sat the whole time just staring at him—yes, none other than that gorgeous Mont Blanc!). And who could forget the unbelievably serene Les Houches and Balme ski areas right along the Swiss border? I still clearly remember the comfort of climbing into bed at the same wonderful hotel every night. I would lie there, almost in disbelief at the vastness of it all and the endless possibilities that lay ahead. I replayed the day’s adventures in my head as I drifted off to sleep, hoping to recapture every single second and hold on to it forever. I can also remember boarding the little red train to Montenvers, taking me up to the Mer de Glace at 1,913 m in altitude—to the place that served as Mary Shelley’s inspiration for her beloved Frankenstein. After donning my walking boots, I made my way to the charming town of Chamonix where my travel companions and I enjoyed the most delectable Savoyard cuisine and wine at a local bistro. With spring in the air, time stood still as we lingered at the table for hours. Of course, a visit to Chamonix would not be complete without trying Le pas dans le vide, a brand new vertigo-inducing attraction that allows visitors to step into a glass structure hanging off the mountain at 3,842 m in altitude—over a 1,000 m drop! This is as intense as it gets. Then again, what else would you expect in the Vallée Blanche! And now that you can explore this area using an unlimited ski pass, borders are no longer a restriction… and this snowy white paradise is entirely yours for the taking. Through Courmayeur and Verbier, Italy and Switzerland are just waiting to be explored, and more memories are just waiting to be made. Enjoy! gendronski.com/en/chamonix/

t was Jean-Claude Killy who, in the 1960s, became the poster child of French skiing. His career as a competitive skier, marked by a series of spell-binding performances, led to Killy taking home the gold in all three Alpine events during the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble. As testament to his talent, a skiing area in Killy’s hometown was later named in his honour. Fastforward to 2015, when Espace Killy now enjoys a reputation as the epicentre of the skiing world. Located halfway between Geneva and Turin, the little piece of Savoyard paradise, nestled in the Vanoise Massif, is proud to be known as the French skiing paradise par excellence. Young and vibrant, Espace Killy is the place to enjoy some of the most intense skiing in the world. Val d’Isère, with its chic and sophisticated flair, is connected to its younger and more rebellious sister station, Tignes, through three different passages. Together, this fantastic duo forms Espace Killy, a superb ski area boasting over 300 km of groomed runs, which has received accolades around the world.
Tignes: vertical intensity
The athletic side of skiing takes on a whole new meaning in Tignes. In this immense sunny playground of endless white, criss-crossed by a sophisticated system of high-speed lifts, one can easily spend days zigzagging from top to bottom, back and forth between endless off-piste runs and wide-open groomers. A freestyler’s dream, these facilities are nothing short of spectacular (Tignes was host to the Euro X-Games in 2013). For starters, the runs on Grande Motte Glacier—the focal point in Tignes—open up in early October so you can get a jump-start on the season. And, if you’re looking for something a little different to do, you can always try out some scuba diving… under the ice, that is! On top of all these adrenalinepumping options, Tignes has recently added the all new Bun J Ride to its line-up of activities: this crazy Bungee inspired attraction allows you to ski down a 30 m ramp dropping 40 m on bungee cords until it locks you into a zip wire that will take you back down to terra firma. Of course, we are only just scratching the surface here. We could go on and on about everything that makes Tignes so great!

When you hear the bells ring at Val d’Isère, more often than not they mark the start of a World Cup race. The Face de Bellevarde, overlooking the resort, one of the most technical runs on the circuit, is much like an illuminated monument surrounded by the admirers who gather at its feet. Needless to say, such worship is definitely well earned. Val d’Isère is the perfect mountain for experienced skiers eager to earn their après-ski downtime.

And, since we are on the topic of après-ski fun, you’ll be excited to know that a young, hip vibe has taken over La Fruitière, a mountain restaurant that has since expanded to add the Folie Douce bar to its facilities. Quiet wine sipping has made room for DJs and turntables, blaring the tunes for fluorescent ski pant-wearing crowds on the terrace, happily enjoying one of the most lively après-ski parties in the Alps.

Les 3 vallÉes france
There’s literally nothing else like it! by Marilyn Griffiths and Robert Choquette Special Contributors
F
irst off, let’s get one thing straight. There is, quite literally, no comparing Les 3 Vallées to anything else.
Made up of eight ski resorts with a total of 600 km of runs, this truly is the largest interconnected ski area in the world. While some of the resorts that make up this mammoth area are not as widely known, others such as Méribel, Val Thorens and Les Menuires are internationally renowned. The numbers say it all: 321 runs serviced by 183 lifts including 63 cable cars that allow you to explore 105 square kilometres of terrain, 25 summits and 6 glaciers.
accommodations goes down with altitude! It’s much more affordable to find a room in one of the surrounding villages such as La Tania, Brides-les-Bains, Orelle or SaintMartin-de-Belleville. And, when it comes time to choose between the four mega-resorts, know that the ultrachic and vibrant Courchevel is located below the tree line—a clear advantage in reduced visibility conditions. Then there’s the vibrant and appealing Méribel, a more traditional option, which also happens to be our personal favourite. This top-notch resort is also located right at the heart of this
vast ski area. A third option is Val Thorens. With its village perched at 2,300 metres in altitude, this particular resort is well on its way to becoming the new hip destination for an elite clientele—but, be warned, its popularity is definitely reflected in the cost! Although the high altitude at Val-Thorens guarantees a certain amount of snow, poor visibility can also be an issue. And, last but certainly not least is Les Menuires, where there are always plenty of runs to choose from, no matter what the weather brings. The 3 Vallées ski area is so incredibly vast, you can’t possibly explore all of it in a single
No matter how often we visit Les 3 Vallées, we continue to be amazed by the sheer immensity of it all. Note that a significant proportion of the ski area is located above the tree line—so high up, in fact, you’ll have a clear view of the entire thing! Add 1,920 m of vertical and you’ve got a whole lot of exciting terrain to explore! If you’re wondering where to stay during your visit, remember that the cost of

La plagne and les arcs france
Paradiski by PAul Dubrûle Ski Sales Director
V
oted Number 1 on the countdown of France’s top ski resorts for 2014–15 by L’Équipe sporting magazine, it is clear the winds of change are blowing over the gigantic ski area of Paradiski. The La Plagne resort recently announced its 10-year revitalization plan aimed at revamping its fleet of ski lifts and rejuvenating its image. The ultimate goal is, of course, to attract more skiers to the resort. Operation revitalization is already in full swing, with the inauguration of an 8-person lift, Le Colosse, the fastest in France. At La Plagne, a favourite among locals, gorgeous snow and spectacular descents are always on the menu. Its 99 lifts give you access to loads of terrain and backcountry skiing for those eager to tackle some steep, deep powder or rip up a few couloirs. There are also 6 snow parks where, you could even cross paths with Olympic medalists Kevin Rolland or Marie Martinod. A stay at Paradiski would not be complete without hopping over to Les Arcs on the Vanosie Express cable car. This resort is most notably renowned for its long steeps down from Aiguille Rouge (3,226 m), its exceptional backcountry and variety of

intermediate runs—which represent 60% of the trail map. You can stay in one of the resort’s four villages—Arc 1600, 1800, 1950 or 2000—all of which prohibit the use of vehicles. Considered one of the biggest skiable areas in Europe, Paradiski is a destination that is sure to exceed your expectations. So, what are waiting for? Now’s the time to discover— or rediscover—this iconic ski area for yourself. gendronski.com/en/la-plagne/ gendronski.com/en/les-arcs/

LA Parva-valle Nevado and El colorado by Sophie Laplante

lways on the lookout for bigger and better travel options, Gendron Travel initially sent its first groups on Chilean ski vacations about 10 years ago… and, did we mention it was in the middle of summer? Although some might think it’s a crazy idea, others are thrilled at the thought of extending their ski season into the summer, or at having the opportunity to explore new horizons. La Parva, Valle Nevado and EL Colorado—our Southern American star destinations—are three mountains that I like to describe as the Chilean version of 3 Vallées.

DESTINATION REP
For the 7 th consecutive year, Serge has been Gendron Travel’s destination rep!
Stay longer and visit Santiago, it’s wineries or the Atacama desert.
Located about one and a half hours from Santiago, the alpine village of Farellones serves as your base for skiing these three amazing destinations. And, it also happens to be the place our destination representative, Serge Berthiaume, calls home. If you want to discover every nook and cranny of this fabulous ski area, Serge is your man—he knows it like the back of his hand! He will help you choose the particular sectors that best suit your skill level and give you a heads up on the weather and snow conditions. Whether you like long descents on wide-open groomers or heading for the bowls in search of fresh, new snow, you will find what you are looking for. You can also easily access lots of backcountry terrain via one of many T-bars available. And, don’t worry if the lifts are sometimes slow—look at it as a great opportunity to catch your breath (remember that you are at high altitude) and admire the Andes. Over and above the superb skiing, visitors to Chile are often impressed by how warm and friendly Chileans are, and by the laid-back atmosphere that reigns on the mountain. They also thoroughly enjoy the delectable local food and sublime red wine—a perfect combination for unforgettable après-ski moments. And, although many come for the skiing, they often decide to extend their stay and explore more of the country and all that it has to offer. Following the wine trail, visiting Vina Del Mar and enjoying a getaway in the Atacama Desert are just a few of the more popular excursions. So, if an out-of-the-ordinary ski vacation in the Southern Hemisphere sounds like fun, remember that the best time to go is August or early September. True, this type of vacation is a little more expensive than average—but the experience is so outrageously unique, you truly can’t put a price tag on it. So, dreaming of a white summer yet? Start planning today! gendronski.com/en/valle-nevado/

zermatt switzerland
a dream come true by Marie Duchesneau Special Contributor and Globe-trotting Skier
Z
ermatt is a tiny village tucked deep in the heart of the Swiss Alps often described as athletic, aesthetic and panoramic—but, although clearly accurate, mere words cannot do this place justice. You really need to experience it for yourself. When I stepped out of the train station, I had to pinch myself to make sure it was real. Was I in heaven? As I strolled through the vehicle-free alpine village, I just couldn’t keep my eyes off the Matterhorn, the most widely photographed mountain in the world. And I also couldn’t help think that this majestic icon of the Swiss Alps might serve as a great reference point as I made my way around the enormous ski area here. To start the day off on the right foot, make sure you hop on the cog railway. This 30-minute trip will take you up to the Gornergrat sector at 3,089 metres. From there, you can warm up your leg muscles on the wide-groomed intermediate runs before making your way over to the Stockhorn sector. The latter is a magnificent—albeit somewhat crowded— bowl of glorious powder. After a morning of brisk skiing, you can make your way to the Fluhalp restaurant via the Rothorn lift. You’ll definitely want to try a delicious röstie, the region’s most popular dish. If you happen to love long descents (and have thighs of steel!), challenge yourself to ski from Matterhorn Glacier Paradise all the way down to the village. Your après-ski will certainly be well deserved after that! If, however, you happen to be more of a backcountry enthusiast, I strongly recommend you hire a guide to stay safe while exploring out-of-bounds areas. Besides, guided backcountry skiing is a great way to meet wonderful people and share some great stories. To finish things off in style, you absolutely have to hop over to the Italian side of this ski area. No trip to Zermatt would be complete without it. Set an entire day aside if you really want to make the most of it, and also to make sure you avoid wasting time going back and forth between both sides of the mountain. The coffee and pasta alone will make you glad you went! After a trip to Zermatt, you will easily understand why it is one of the most popular

n terms of easy access, it doesn’t get any better than this. Verbier, in western Switzerland, is a mere two-hour drive or shuttle bus transfer from Geneva Airport. And when it comes to lodging, Verbier boasts over 25,000 beds and enough restaurants, shops, bars and discos (most open until 2 a.m.!) to meet just about everyone’s needs.

People from all over the world choose Verbier, one of the largest ski areas in Europe, first for its tremendous skiing and riding and, second, for its vibrant atmosphere. No other Swiss ski resort attracts so many young people. Ideally located at the western reach of the Four Valleys, this chalet-style village is perched at 1,500 m atop a sunny plateau that serves as the main gateway to four enormous alpine valleys and five villages linked by some 93 lifts and over 412 km of trails. It doesn’t get easier than this— just step into the 150-passenger Jumbo cable car and make your way to the top of Mont Fort’s 3,330 m, the destination’s highest point. From here, snow conditions and weather permitting, the options are practically unlimited, both in and out of bounds. Novices and experts alike will find exactly the kind of skiing they are looking for in Verbier. Skiing the Four Valleys is a unique experience not to be missed. Intermediate-level skiers will need a full day to ski the entire circuit and back… as long as they keep up a good pace and don’t make too many wrong turns. By the time you get back to Verbier, you’ll have covered around 56 km of mostly cruising runs and skied in excess of 4,000 m of vertical. Verbier is famous for its off-piste skiing. But be smart: hire a guide and strap on avalanche beacons before heading out-of-bounds. Besides, you wouldn’t want to be late for all the après-ski fun at the Mont-Fort pub. gendronski.com/en/verbier/

irst of all, Kitzbühel’s a wonderful little town—a real town, where people live and work. Kitz, as it’s fondly called, with its 14th century houses resting along fashionable streets teeming with shops and cafés, is both sophisticated and fun. It’s not one of those purpose-built resorts perched high in the mountains. Rather, it’s a postcardperfect place framed by rugged mountains. Kitz is a complete stand-alone destination. Here, winter visitors can enjoy a full sports centre, sleigh rides, skating rink, casino, museum, walking paths and cross-country skiing. Of course, there are also lots of places to shop, and endless après-ski and dining options to choose from. Steeped in history, Kitzbühel still has quite the modern edge. This fun-loving destination is as progressive as its lifts and amenities and its amazing state-of-the-art snowmaking

capabilities. Of course, lending Mother Nature a hand is a definite must in Kitzbühel where the top elevation is 2,000 m. Consider it a bonus—especially if you tend to find extreme altitude changes a little challenging! One clear reason to pick Kitzbühel is the extensive cruising terrain you’ll find here. There is definitely a good variety of slopes, but Kitz is essentially for cruisers. Its sprawling domain is linked to the slopes of five neighbouring villages, making for 170 km of runs. Kitzbühel’s reputation for steep and difficult is a misconception. It probably comes from annually hosting the undisputed highlight of the World Cup, the Hahnenkamm race weekend. Kitz is where athletes are put to their ultimate test on the Streif, which is possibly the most demanding downhill course on the circuit. This race weekend also happens to be the biggest annual party in the Alps! When cruising between the villages, be sure to sample the fare at any of the 50 plus unique on-slope eateries. And don’t bother counting calories. After all, you’ll need the sustenance to keep you going! gendronski.com/en/kitzbuhel/

It’s actually the biggest glacier ski resort in all of Austria. Depending on the particular resort you choose, it can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to get there from the downtown bus station. UNUSED SERVICES No refunds will be provided for services that are unused or cancelled after your departure or as a result of circumstances beyond our control.
TRAVEL INSURANCE Gendron Travel strongly recommends that its customers purchase travel insurance when reserving their trip, most notably insurance covering trip cancellation, damages and baggage loss as well as insurance covering medical and hospitalization costs abroad and, lastly, car rental insurance. Customers who are already insured through their credit card, their group work insurance, or through any other form of personal insurance are responsible for understanding the conditions of their existing contract and shall not hold Gendron Travel responsible in any way for any aspect of their travel insurance. Customers are invited to consult their travel agent for more information on travel insurance. Please note that some insurance policies do not cover some extreme sports incidents. The client is responsible for validating this information
with their insurer and ensuring they have adequate insurance coverage for their trip. It is the client’s responsibility to validate prior to their departure with insurer.
CANCELLATION FEES 45 days or more before departure: total deposit. Less than 45 days before departure: total cost of package, including all taxes.
CUSTOMER’S RESPONSIBILITY The customer is responsible for informing the travel agent of any condition (physical, health, pregnancy, etc.) that may restrict their ability to travel in any way whatsoever as stipulated in Article 28 of the LPC .
INCREASE IN PRICE AND COSTS In the event of an increase in taxes, royalties or other fees authorized by a recognized public authority, the indicated prices are subject to change. Gendron Travel reserves the right to increase fees and prices as a result of fluctuations in the exchange rate, fuel costs, taxes and other applicable fees. Should the price increase following a fuel surcharge imposed by the carrier or an increase in the exchange rate (if the exchange rate applicable 45 days before provision of services has increased more than 5% since the date of contract signing; and/or if the increase in price, without taking the QST and GST into consideration, is equal to or higher than 7% of the price of services), the customer may cancel said services (with full and immediate refund of services) or opt for a substitute offer of similar services; if the price of these similar services is higher than those originally reserved, the customer will be required to pay for the price difference. No price increase may occur within 30 days before provision of services. Any price reduction resulting from a promotion of a decision made by Gendron Travel applies to new reservations only. For the most recent prices, please contact one of our travel consultants. No changes will be brought to previously made reservations.

If, for any reason whatsoever, the stipulated services cannot be offered, Gendron Travel will offer the customer services of a comparable nature. Gendron Travel reserves the right to cancel or modify a trip at any time. The passenger waives all claims of any nature or any kind against Gendron Travel for loss, theft, accidents or damage. Gendron Travel will not be held liable for the closing of facilities, strikes, bankruptcies, political crises, terrorist attacks, bad weather, the quality of services provided by suppliers or overselling by the latter, the traveller’s failure to obtain all necessary travel documents, flight delays or any other circumstance or condition beyond Gendron Travel’s control that may prevent the normal and anticipated activities of the trip.

If, however, the customer would still like to take the trip on his own, the package cost may be higher or lower depending on the new price in effect at that particular time.
