Welcome!
As Vancouver prepares to invite the world to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is a thrill to be turning the spotlight on British Columbia wines this year. This is the largest assembly of British Columbia wineries ever at an international festival, and we’re looking forward to sharing their incredible story of growth and excellence – a story reflected in the 31-year history of the Playhouse Wine Festival – with the wine world. And with the focus on Pinot(s), you can expect many food-friendly wine discoveries from Burgundy, Oregon, California, New Zealand, and the Okanagan Valley. Please raise a glass with me to welcome all our 183 wineries from 15 countries – including Israel and China – to the 2009 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. Harry Hertscheg Executive Director Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival Society
Some friendly advice... • While we bend over backwards trying to be perfect, event details are subject to change without notice and without refund. • Seating for latecomers at formal sit-down tastings is not guaranteed and money will not be refunded. Be on time! • Nothing shouts “wine rookie” louder than fragrance. Refrain from stinky stuff like perfume, cologne, aftershave and hairspray. The noses, palates and wines in the room will thank you. •
Dress code: Smart, sophisticated and comfortable. Most wear business attire, and we recommend black. (Red wine never looks good on your best white outfit.) Sore feet make it hard to enjoy good wine, so wear comfortable shoes.
• Please taste responsibly. We serve one-ounce tasting pours, but it’s not necessary to swallow every ounce that’s poured. Try to master the fine art of spitting into the buckets provided at each station. •
There is a whole lot of wine and a short time to taste it. Arrive with a plan to tackle the room, or use one of the maps prepared by a wine expert to make the most of your time in the International Festival Tasting Room.
•
Make this the best night of your life… not the worst. Take advantage of an amazing deal by staying overnight at one of our partner hotels. Take a taxi. Take the bus (BC Liquor Stores offers you a free ticket). Assign a designated spitter. Walk. Whatever you do, don’t drink and drive.
• You must be at least 19 years old and should be prepared to prove it.

British Columbian Wine Regions
2009 is an important milestone for the British Columbia wine industry. As the featured region at the 31st Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival, British Columbia will have 58 wineries pouring wines at the festival. It’s a hugely significant rite of passage: we’ve finally hit the big time, joining the ranks of France, Italy, Australia, Chile, and California. Like a rookie NHLer lining up for the first time with his boyhood heroes, we have plenty of reasons to be proud, and every reason to celebrate. Not too long ago, this kind of showing would have been impossible. As recently as the mid-80s, there were only 13 wineries in operation, and only a thousand acres of vineyard in all of BC. We were about as far from the big time as you could get. We were the seventh defenseman on an Eastern League team, riding the pine at the wrong end of the bench. Since then, our growth has been phenomenal. We’re starting to put up some impressive numbers. As of October 2008 there were 154 grape wineries in BC, with additional licences pending approval. Over 9,100 acres of grapes planted, with 710 vineyards growing over 60 grape varieties. We’ve grown up quickly, but let’s not kid ourselves. In terms of size, we will never match up: it is simply impossible. We will always be a Cliff Ronning, skating in a league full of Chris Prongers.

British Columbia: Our Land, Revealed Which brings us to the all-important point. In the International League of Wine, it’s ok to be small. In fact, it’s very good to be small. Small is beautiful. The trick is to be different. The glory of wine is that it celebrates diversity. In an increasingly urbanized and homogenized world, wine’s concept of terroir is precious. It teaches that place matters. Very small differences are quantifiable, and it is difference that adds value. The key is to focus on the special attributes of a given place. In BC, this is our strength. We know that our wine-growing environment is truly unique. All we have to do is tell the world about it. We will always be dwarfed by big brands. We can never be one. But if we skate hard and keep our sticks on the ice, we can be the world’s greatest BC. The scouts will notice us. They will come to appreciate our uniqueness. They will understand that the world’s greatest BC wine deserves the same respect as the world’s greatest Burgundy or the world’s greatest Barossa. The same, only different. Different, and therefore worthy of attention. Here’s to British Columbia joining the big league of wine at the 2009 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. And here’s to the day when the Stanley Cup is filled to the brim with Steller’s Jay Brut!

Global Focus Pinot(s)
“ Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot’s potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they’re just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet.” – Miles, Sideways Pinot: Who knew one word could mean so many different and delectable things? Believed to be derived from the characteristic pinecone shape of the grape bunches, the name Pinot encompasses a cluster of different varietals. Led by Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc – the Big Three, as it were – each grape asserts completely different characteristics and can be produced in a variety of styles. Pinot Noir can range from restrained and earthy to full on ballsy and fruity, with every incarnation in between. Pinot Gris’ name even changes when the style changes. Pinot Grigio is used to describe the dry, grassy, refreshing style of Pinot Gris specialized by the Italians. Pinot Gris is generally fuller bodied when developed in cooler climates like Alsace, Oregon and British Columbia, where it can take on completely different flavours and reach amazing depths of complexity. And don’t forget about Pinot Blanc, which also produces fresh, exciting wines in a wide variety of styles. BC Pinot Blanc is reminiscent of summer fruit, pinched from the roadside fruit stand. Check out the seminar dedicated to Pinot(s), drop by the Pinot(s) Tasting Station in the International Festival Tasting Room or navigate from winery to winery via the Pinot(s) map to learn more.

The Wine World is Here. The big room is home to all 183 participating wineries, who will be pouring 723 different wines. Wineries are organized alphabetically and listed in the free Festival Program handed out at the door to help you keep track of the wines you like. The Tasting Room offers a unique opportunity to taste rare bottles and discover new treasures as you visit with renowned winery principals from around the globe. A winery principal, identified by their royal blue lanyard, is a senior member of the winery, intimately involved in the wine-producing process as a winemaker, proprietor or senior executive and is therefore thoroughly familiar with the wines being poured. Feel free to ask questions of them at their booth – and learn from the experts about your favourite wine. The Tasting Room plays out over three consecutive nights. Thursday night’s capacity is guaranteed to be 30 percent lower than the other two evenings, attracting wine collectors and trade professionals who appreciate more room to interact with the winery principals. Friday is great for groups and the after-work crowd looking to kick off the weekend in style. Saturday night is perfect for couples and friends wanting to spend a night on the town. Groups of eight or more can save $9 each on Friday and Saturday nights. Be forewarned that this is a wine tasting, not a dinner event. We strongly recommend that you have a meal before tackling the room. However, you will find plenty of plain bread for cleansing the palate and small food samples will be served throughout the room.
Highlights It’s easy to find wine regions that are bigger, older, or more famous. However, it is not easy to find a region that is newer, more diverse or more exciting. From the Cowichan Valley to Keremeos, from Auxerrois and Barbera to Tempranillo and Zinfandel, British Columbia is full of surprises. As the theme region for the 2009 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival, British Columbia will be represented by 58 wineries – a concept that would have been inconceivable only a decade ago. Be sure to visit the British Columbia region in the Tasting Room – it’s a unique opportunity to taste what the province has to offer and to meet the personalities behind the wine.

Puddifoot presents a unique opportunity for discerning tasters. Oculus is a Canadian original: Deeply rooted in the tradition of classic Bordeaux winemaking, Mission Hill’s flagship wine makes a persuasive argument for the magic of south Okanagan Merlot when married with its companion Bordeaux grape varieties. Since its debut in 1999 (the ’97 and ’98 vintages were released together), Oculus has garnered critical acclaim from sommeliers, wine writers, chefs and collectors alike. This signature wine has been gathering momentum like few luxury wines in recent memory. As Oculus reaches new heights of quality and commands even greater respect and recognition, it is bound to become ever more precious and scarce. Thursday, March 26 Osoyoos Larose is one of the most sought after wines available in Canada. Created on an extraordinary site in the south Okanagan, renowned for both its special growing conditions and its stunning beauty, Osoyoos Larose is the outcome of an inspired partnership. In 1998, Groupe Taillan of France united with Vincor Canada to bring centuries old French winemaking to one of the world’s newest and most exciting wine regions. Together, their shared goal was to develop Osoyoos Larose, a Canadian wine of exceptional quality made from classic Bordeaux varietals grown in the unique terroir of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. The partners believe that the exceptional growing conditions combine with Bordeaux winemaking expertise to enable the crafting of red wines ranking amongst the finest in the world. Join winemaker and viticulturalist Pascal Madevon for this exciting opportunity to taste barrel samples of the individual components as well as a vertical tasting of Le Grand Vin from 2001 through to 2007.

Today, Winemaker Laurie Hook works with Napa Valley sites, identified for producing intensely coloured and flavoured grapes. The most expressive components from their best vineyards are blended to craft the Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. At this tasting of some of the best icewines from Canada, Germany and the United States, a panel of expert producers, hosted by John Schreiner – who wrote the book on icewine – will reveal the magic of this wine. No wine is made under conditions that are more difficult. Under regulations that are strictly enforced everywhere icewine is made, the grapes cannot be picked until they are hard frozen. This requires pickers to work in bone-chilling conditions, often at night. The grapes remain frozen for pressing, yielding only 15-20% of the usual volume of juice. The resulting juice is 35-45% sugar by volume, with the potential to make wines of remarkable intensity of flavour and aroma. Exuberant when young, icewine changes its personality dramatically as it ages. Is icewine best consumed when young or should it be aged? The experts will address this and other issues concerning icewine, including this: global warming has already reduced eiswein vintages in Germany. Is icewine production under threat? Featuring Schloss Reinhartshausen and St. Urbans-Hof from Germany, Chateau Ste. Michelle from the United States, Château des Charmes, Peninsula Ridge and Pillitteri from Ontario, and Gehringer Brothers, Hainle, Inniskillin, Jackson-Triggs, Mission Hill and Summerhill from British Columbia.

VCEC, Meeting Room 8 999 Canada Place 3:00-4:45 pm $40
An exploration of sensory deprivation in the art of wine appreciation. Experts worldwide claim that tasting in the dark heightens your senses to smell and taste wine. Take a “blind” look at a white and a red wine – will you be able to tell the difference? Join wine educator and sommelier Mireille Sauvé of The Wine Umbrella as she takes participants through a flight of wines double blind. Blind taste, blindfolded and see for yourself how impartial judgment affects your opinions. Bibs optional (but no peeking). Sponsored by Flavours Magazine
The Century Mark
VCEC, Meeting Room 13 999 Canada Place 5:00-6:45 pm $80
Old vines are said to produce intense wines, full of character. This seminar is designed to put that theory to the test. The prerequisite for participation in this tasting is simple – only wines from vines at least 100 years old are allowed. The participating wineries have pulled out all of the stops, with several coming from vines closer to 150 years old. Join perennial Wine Festival moderators Mark Davidson and Cristiano van Zeller, with an allstar cast of winemakers, as they guide you through a centenarian tasting to remember. Featuring wines from Henschke, M. Torres, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta do Vale Dona Maria, Ravenswood, Rolf Binder, Seghesio, Tyrrell’s and Yalumba. Sponsored by Vines Magazine
Icons of British Columbia
VCEC, Meeting Room 11 999 Canada Place 5:00-6:45 pm $50
To the list of things that define what is quintessentially British Columbian, we now need to add our wines. In this seminar, we’ll look at benchmark examples of a wide range of white and red BC wines. How do they compare to international benchmarks? How and why are they different? Is there such a thing as “BC terroir”? Is there a definitive “BC style”? Join us to find out! An all-star winemaker panel will be moderated by David Scholefield. Featuring wines from Burrowing Owl, Black Hills, CedarCreek, JacksonTriggs, Lake Breeze, Mission Hill, Nk’Mip, Quails’ Gate, Sandhill, See Ya Later Ranch, Tantalus, Thornhaven and Wild Goose. Sponosored by Wines of British Columbia
