The Wine World is Here Canada’s Premier Wine Show Informative, Educational, Entertaining Welcome to Canada’s premier wine industry event. The Trade Days program is designed to meet the needs of industry professionals whose consummate demand for knowledge and expertise is legendary. Three days of seminars and tastings will introduce retailers, buyers, servers, chefs and media to the latest industry trends, hot varietals and developing wine regions. Leading wine experts and principals from around the world are coming to Vancouver to answer questions and share their favourite vintages. Without a doubt, this is the best opportunity in Canada to meet the men and women behind the wines you sell and serve. With this year’s regional theme, British Columbia: Our Land, Revealed witness the introduction of our local wines and unique terroir to the world. For the first time, British Columbian wines will take centre stage at the Wine Festival, alongside some of the greatest producers from around the world. For this year’s Global Focus, the world has promised to present a plethora of Pinot(s)! There are 194 (at last count) Pinot(s) being poured in the Tasting Room and at special events during the Festival. Also, to help you keep ahead of the curve, the Trade Tastings feature 159 wines that are unlisted and not yet available in this marketplace. That’s in addition to 723 wines that are poured at both trade and public tastings.

The Shore Club The Shore Club is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. Wine represents a key element in the hospitality we extend to our guests at The Shore Club, so it gives us particular pleasure to support this prestigious North American wine festival. The Playhouse Theatre Company has a reputation and tradition as one of Vancouver’s cultural highlights. The Playhouse Wine Festival gives us all a chance to celebrate and support the Playhouse as it enters an exciting time in its history, with an energy and creativity that we all enjoy. Welcome!

As Vancouver prepares to invite the world in 2010, we’re delighted to host the wine world for the largest assembly of BC wineries ever at an international trade show. Whether you’re a winery principal from Europe, the southern hemisphere or the Okanagan, or a wine executive from New York, Toronto or Vancouver, welcome to one of North America’s most dynamic wine and culinary markets. For you – the buyer, server, retailer, sommelier, chef or industry representative – from Metro Vancouver to Alberta to across Canada – our Trade Days events offer value and opportunity during these challenging times. Also be sure to attend this year’s symposium on eco-marketing, one of the hot topics globally. And congratulations to the deserving winners of our Celebrating Excellence trade competitions. I look forward to seeing all of you in early spring when the wine world is here...to do business with you! Harry Hertscheg Executive Director Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival Society

Some friendly advice... • While we bend over backwards trying to be perfect, event details are subject to change without notice and without refund. • Seating for latecomers at formal sit-down tastings is not guaranteed and money will not be refunded. Be on time! • Nothing shouts “wine rookie” louder than fragrance. Refrain from stinky stuff like perfume, cologne, aftershave and hairspray. The noses, palates and wines in the room will thank you. • Dress code: Smart, sophisticated and comfortable. Most wear business attire, and we recommend black. (Red wine never looks good on your best white outfit.) Sore feet make it hard to enjoy good wine, so wear comfortable shoes. • Please taste responsibly. We serve one-ounce tasting pours, but it’s not necessary to swallow every ounce that’s poured. Try to master the fine art of spitting into the buckets provided at each station. • There is a whole lot of wine and a short time to taste it. Arrive with a plan to tackle the room, or use one of the maps prepared by a wine expert to make the most of your time in the International Festival Tasting Room. • Make this the best night of your life… not the worst. Take advantage of an amazing deal by staying overnight at one of our partner hotels. Take a taxi. Take the bus (BC Liquor Stores offers you a free ticket). Assign a designated spitter. Walk. Whatever you do, don’t drink and drive. • You must be at least 19 years old and should be prepared to prove it.

British Columbian Wine Regions

2009 is an important milestone for the British Columbia wine industry. As the featured region at the 31st Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival, British Columbia will have 58 wineries pouring wines at the festival. It’s a hugely significant rite of passage: we’ve finally hit the big time, joining the ranks of France, Italy, Australia, Chile, and California. Like a rookie NHLer lining up for the first time with his boyhood heroes, we have plenty of reasons to be proud, and every reason to celebrate. Not too long ago, this kind of showing would have been impossible. As recently as the mid-80s, there were only 13 wineries in operation, and only a thousand acres of vineyard in all of BC. We were about as far from the big time as you could get. We were the seventh defenseman on an Eastern League team, riding the pine at the wrong end of the bench. Since then, our growth has been phenomenal. We’re starting to put up some impressive numbers. As of October 2008 there were 154 grape wineries in BC, with additional licences pending approval. Over 9,100 acres of grapes planted, with 710 vineyards growing over 60 grape varieties. We’ve grown up quickly, but let’s not kid ourselves. In terms of size, we will never match up: it is simply impossible. We will always be a Cliff Ronning, skating in a league full of Chris Prongers.

British Columbia: Our Land, Revealed Which brings us to the all-important point. In the International League of Wine, it’s ok to be small. In fact, it’s very good to be small. Small is beautiful. The trick is to be different. The glory of wine is that it celebrates diversity. In an increasingly urbanized and homogenized world, wine’s concept of terroir is precious. It teaches that place matters. Very small differences are quantifiable, and it is difference that adds value. The key is to focus on the special attributes of a given place. In BC, this is our strength. We know that our wine-growing environment is truly unique. All we have to do is tell the world about it. We will always be dwarfed by big brands. We can never be one. But if we skate hard and keep our sticks on the ice, we can be the world’s greatest BC. The scouts will notice us. They will come to appreciate our uniqueness. They will understand that the world’s greatest BC wine deserves the same respect as the world’s greatest Burgundy or the world’s greatest Barossa. The same, only different. Different, and therefore worthy of attention. Here’s to British Columbia joining the big league of wine at the 2009 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. And here’s to the day when the Stanley Cup is filled to the brim with Steller’s Jay Brut!

Global Focus Pinot(s)

“ Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot’s potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they’re just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet.” – Miles, Sideways Pinot: Who knew one word could mean so many different and delectable things? Believed to be derived from the characteristic pinecone shape of the grape bunches, the name Pinot encompasses a cluster of different varietals. Led by Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc – the Big Three, as it were – each grape asserts completely different characteristics and can be produced in a variety of styles. Pinot Noir can range from restrained and earthy to full on ballsy and fruity, with every incarnation in between. Pinot Gris’ name even changes when the style changes. Pinot Grigio is used to describe the dry, grassy, refreshing style of Pinot Gris specialized by the Italians. Pinot Gris is generally fuller bodied when developed in cooler climates like Alsace, Oregon and British Columbia, where it can take on completely different flavours and reach amazing depths of complexity. And don’t forget about Pinot Blanc, which also produces fresh, exciting wines in a wide variety of styles. BC Pinot Blanc is reminiscent of summer fruit, pinched from the roadside fruit stand. Check out one of the seminars dedicated to Pinot(s), drop by the Pinot(s) Tasting Station in the International Festival Tasting Room or navigate from winery to winery via the Pinot(s) map to learn more.

Tasting Room Sponsors

A winery principal, identified by their royal blue lanyard, is a senior member of the winery, intimately involved in the wine-producing process as a winemaker, proprietor or senior executive. Feel free to ask questions – this may be the best opportunity to find out more about each wine. The first hour in the room each day (1:30 - 2:30 pm) is reserved for trade buyers, executive chefs, Trade Super Pass and Trade Days Pack holders only, providing the time and freedom to taste wines, find out what’s hot, and connect with wine industry personalities away from the crowds. Capacity in the Tasting Room is far lower during the Trade sessions – you can avoid the crush and share tips with your peers when you visit in the afternoon. On Friday, a trade-only seminar for frontline staff, “20 Things to Know for 2010,” includes a ticket for the Trade Tasting, allowing attendees to put their new knowledge of BC wines to the test in the Tasting Room. Highlights It’s easy to find wine regions that are bigger, older, or more famous. However, it is not easy to find a region that is newer, more diverse or more exciting. From the Cowichan Valley to Keremeos, from Auxerrois and Barbera to Tempranillo and Zinfandel, British Columbia is full of surprises. As the theme region for the 2009 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival, British Columbia will be represented by 58 wineries – a concept that would have been inconceivable only a decade ago. Be sure to visit the British Columbia region in the Tasting Room – it’s a unique opportunity to taste what the province has to offer and to meet the personalities behind the wine.

British Columbia: Our Land, Revealed

Sponsored by Wines of British Columbia

With this year’s Global Focus on Pinot(s), you can expect many foodfriendly wine discoveries from Burgundy, Oregon, California, New Zealand and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. Guests will find 194 different Pinots in the Tasting Room, including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and many more. For a comprehensive comparative tasting of Pinots from around the world, head directly to the Pinot(s) Tasting Station, where experts from the International Sommelier Guild and Wine Access magazine will be your guides.

Pinot(s) Tasting Station

Sponsored by Wine Access

This year, the Tasting Room will play host to four Regional Tasting Stations, providing guided tours by four of the world’s most exciting, thriving wine regions. Wine Australia, Wines of Germany, Alsace Wine Committee, and the Vinho Verde Commission will be present to offer a unique viticultural experience. Each Regional Tasting Station will pour a selection of exciting and expressive wines emblematic of their terroir, giving you a chance to visit entire wine regions at a single table.

Regional Tasting Stations

Treat yourself by spending a night or weekend in one of the premium hotels offering special Festival packages. These hotels are a short walk or cab ride from the convention centre and other venues. Relax, kick your heels up and leave the driving for another day. Visit PlayhouseWinfest.com for more information.

Hotel Packages

Puddifoot presents a unique opportunity for discerning tasters. Although all glassware in the Tasting Room is now Riedel, each varietal requires a different shape of glass to bring out its full potential. At the Riedel Tasting Booth, you can try a wine out of the festival glass you were handed at the door, and then try the same wine out of the correct varietal Riedel glass. Is there a difference? You be the judge.

Riedel Tasting Booth

Make your Saturday night at the Wine Festival one to remember by attending the Blasted Church Midnight Service at Christ Church Cathedral after the Tasting Room closes. For details, visit PlayhouseWinefest.com.

Reducing carbon footprints, being eco-friendly, having organic certification and the marketing of these ideas in the wine industry… how important are they and do consumers really care? How do wineries verify their claims of being biodynamic, organic and good for the planet? What is involved in the certification process of an organic winery and are the regulations consistent throughout all agricultural areas of the globe? How aware are consumers and how easy is it to identify and find environmentally friendly wines? For answers join Moderator Anthony Gismondi and Facilitator Glenn Sigurdson as they probe industry leaders, researchers and pundits in the search for truth in green wine marketing.
