Music Director & Conductor
SoNA Music Director Paul Haas enjoys a distinctive career as conductor, composer and installation artist. His guest conducting engagements have included performances with Orchestra of St. Luke’s, San Antonio Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony, among others, as well as festival appearances.

Piano
Pianist, cultural catalyst, and New York Times Sunday Crossword clue Lara Downes has been called “a musical ray of hope” by NBC News and “an explorer whose imagination is fired by bringing notice to the underrepresented and forgotten” (The Log Journal ). Her dynamic work as a soughtafter soloist, Billboard Chart-topping recording artist, producer, curator, arts activist, and advocate positions her as a cultural visionary on the national arts scene. She was honored as the 2022 Classical Woman of the Year by Performance Today.
Downes’ recent and upcoming onstage adventures include guest appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Pops, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, and
Over the last decade, he has written commissions for a wide variety of iconic venues, including the Park Avenue Armory and Rubin Museum of Art in New York, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, the Anchorage Museum of Art in Alaska and the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
In addition to his position as Music Director of SoNA, Haas is the founder and Artistic Director of Sympho, a trailblazing concert production company that creates powerful and emotional musical experiences, collaborating with leading artists and using unexpected performance methods and unorthodox venues.

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, with recitals and residencies at Ravinia, the Gilmore Festival, Washington Performing Arts, Caramoor, and the Cabrillo Festival, among others. Her creative collaborations with diverse artists including Rhiannon Giddens, Thomas Hampson, Judy Collins, Daniel Hope, Yo-Yo Ma, and the Miró Quartet explore shared creative perspectives across genres and traditions. Lara’s forays into the broad landscape of music have created a unique series of acclaimed recordings, including her most recent release “Love at Last” which debuted at the top of the Billboard and Amazon charts and was featured on an NPR Tiny Desk concert.
Lara has a highly visible media presence in her role as the creator and host of AMPLIFY with Lara Downes, an NPR Music video series entering its third season in partnership with Classical California. She is the creator and curator of Rising Sun Music, a label dedicated to making first recordings of music by Black composers from the 18th century to the present day. Learn more at LaraDownes.com.

Billie Jo Starr & Billie’s Friends
Symphony Orchestra (now SoNA), to her steadfast work to develop the Walton Arts Center, she left a towering legacy that will benefit our community for years to come. After her passing in 2023, a group called Billie’s Friends was formed to raise funds to produce a series of orchestra concerts in her memory. Overture Society
Gifts of any size to the Overture Society provide general operating support for concerts, education programs, community outreach, and administrative expenses.
Chair Sponsorships
Chair Sponsorships support the musicians in the orchestra and help SoNA attract and retain the best talent in the region. A gift of $2,500 will support a Principal musician for a season, and a gift of $1,000 will support a section musician.
