Editor’s Letter New York Fashion Week (NYFW) continues to impress. Not only does the stage of New York City get us excited, but the diversity of designers who presented their Spring/Summer 18 collections, gave us a lot to see and dwell upon with each runway. NYFW truly brings the world of global fashion together for seven dynamic, non-stop days in one spectacular city. In this latest issue packed with more than 400 pages, we want to spotlight the talented Leanne Marshall as we go backstage and do a video interview. We’re also introducing you to a wonderful up-and-coming designer from Cape Verde—Cindy Monteiro. We know you’ll love her style and her story. This edition of our Fashion Week Chronicles would not have been possible without the invitation of all the designers who asked us be a part of their runway or presentation. A big big thank you to each one that made room for us in the audience, backstage and on the riser so that we could capture that moment to share with all of you. Speaking of the perfect photo opportunity, I also want to take this time to thank my talented team of NYC photographers who helped bring this all together: Paul Lim, Hansol Kim, Jeongseon Han and Eunjoo Jeong of New York City Peoples and to Grace Kim and Stephen Velastegui, who all worked tirelessly backstage, on the riser and even on the streets to capture those street style moments. And also much thanks to my NYC Editor, Ksenia Skvortsova, for all her help covering the shows.
Because of all the amazing moments captured during this season, you’ll see our unique perspective captured in these pages. While other magazines dissect each look and share every piece of the collection, we’ve curated looks and moments that we want to share exclusively with you. Fashion is so subjective and no matter what analysis one may do, it comes down to this—do you like it or not? And this season, we definitely cover the gamut of styles so you’re bound to find something that you’ll dream about or will inspire you in a new way for next Spring and Summer. If anything, we know you’ll love our exclusive photos and don’t forget to click the “play” button on select collections to watch the finale runway. Finally, while in NYC, there’s so much more than fashion to see. So, we’re also sharing a few photo essays to bring you another side of this dynamic city captured in between all the runways. Sit back and enjoy the collections and be inspired for next season. All my best,
Danny de la Cruz Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

VRAI Magazine (VM): We understand that you’re from Cape Verde, but can you tell us more about it? Cindy Monteiro: Cape Verde is a beautiful little country of 10 islands, with no minerals or other kind of treasures. Everything we have has to be imported. But I love this country because it is my country. It’s rich of creativity and good people. I always dreamed to help my country in one way or another—to develop it and make it a better place.
VM: Can you tell us about your family and life growing up? Cindy: My family is the center of my world. My dad always thought me the value of hard work and the sacrifice you have to make in order to get what you want. He was born in Cape Verde and at times had trouble finding ways to eat, but he worked and got out of the country to find a way to live better. He returned to Cape Verde to give his contribution and to help the country. And somehow he gave me that! Today I want to do the same. Because the responsibility of the evolution of a country is within each one of us. So even if he was against the fact that I wanted to be a fashion designer because he was afraid I wouldn’t get to eat from it, I always had my mother who believes in me and supports me 200 percent! She kept some of my first drawings from when I was 7 years old. She is with me and pushes me everyday even when I feel like I can’t do it! She is there, she is one of the women who inspired me to create my collection, Berdiana. She is our cornerstone.
VM: What brought you into the world of fashion? Cindy: I always loved fashion since I was a little girl. I was always drawing clothes and dreaming that one day I could be a fashion designer. It might seem a bit cliché but everybody told me I should choose a different area of work because if I did this job, I would not be able to eat because it is not a serious job; it is not an area that people value here in Cape Verde. Somehow I do not blame them. We live in a country with a survival economy and fashion is associated with luxury. And yes they were right, but we had to start somewhere and somehow I decided to pursue my dream and kept working for it. Because it is what I want and I’m not afraid to work. To support my fashion project, I work in a construction firm. It is far from the glamor of the fashion world but it pays the bills.
15
VM: Which designers have inspired you? Cindy: I have a lot of designers who have inspired me: Gabriel Chanel, Alexander Mac Queen, Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Donatella Versace… some by their style, by their strength and courage to be outrageous, and their ability to push the limits and the power to somehow recreate themselves. Another thing is the way they make something very complicated seem so simple, but mainly how they can make simplicity look so elegant, because in the world we are living today, I think that is one of the most difficult things to do.
VM: Can you tell us a bit of about your design style and how would you describe the woman for whom you design? Cindy: My designs are somehow very simple, clean and neutral. By putting the value of the woman in the center of my collection, I wanted to show her different virtues linked to nature. The softness a woman represents, but also the warrior she is (by playing with two different and almost opposite textures). The woman that wears my clothes is a cornerstone. When she comes into the room she doesn’t have to do anything for you to feel her power: The power of a kind warrior.
VM: Think back to the moment you heard that you were showing at NYFW. What did you feel and who was the first person you told? Cindy: I can’t describe the feeling! It had always been my dream so I was so happy but at the same time so worried. Because I had that feeling that a dream can be very fragile and I really didn’t want to do anything that could keep me away from getting my dream realized. I told my mom first and she was so happy she started thinking about everything that I should start doing at the time.
VM: Finally, your SS18 collection is so beautiful and we were transported to an island getaway. Can you tell us more about the inspiration? Cindy: I created a collection named Berdiana—it means “cape Verdean woman”, somehow to honor Cape Verdean women because they have always been the center and the cornerstone of Cape Verdean society. In Cape Verde, their character is oftentimes associated with nature and in poems, expressions like: She is soft as the sea, strong as the Fogo Volcano (it is the volcano that gave the origin to the 10 islands) she is sweet as sugar cane. And that’s how I based my thinking for the collection I chose to do—parallel with nature and the woman using some green fabrics.

A Look Behind the “Green Curtain Runway and Backstage Photography by Eunjoo Jeong
You may know her from Project Runway. You may have dreamed of wearing one of her wedding gowns for your special day. For us, we had the chance to see it all come to life in person as we watched her beautiful creations float down the runway several seasons ago during NYFW. And, we also had the good fortune to feature her bridal creations as we launched our Winter Wedding Guide and entered into the world of digital magazine publishing. Fast forward several seasons, this was our chance to go backstage at NYFW and meet the designer herself in an exclusive interview and learn more about her Spring/Summer 2018 creations. Meet fashion designer...

For this trip to NYFW, I had the opportunity for a few “first time” experiences. Thanks to a dear friend, I actually had a chance to see Lincoln Center for the first time. I had heard of it and saw photos, but never in my years of visiting this city, had I actually stepped foot on it. Another first was actually exploring Central Park. I’ve been to the edge of Central Park in the past but have never actually gone in to explore. I had a runway to attend at the American Museum of Natural History and it’s located across the street from Central Park on the upper west side. I arrived early because I wanted to find the famed fountain I had seen in several movies and often photographed by others. Let’s just say the Museum is located further north and so I was dropped off quite a ways from where the fountain was. Poor planning on my part but I made the most of it. As I wandered into Central Park, I was a bit nervous not knowing where the path would take me. I didn’t want to get lost in the park and miss my show so I was always aware of landmarks and used certain skyscrapers as guides. But as I wandered around, I found beautiful nooks and paths that made me feel as if I were totally transported off Manhattan. My favorite moments were finding the little Swiss chalet and stumbling upon the lake filled with people rowing their boats with the skyline in the distance. Talk about a picture perfect moment. If you travel to NYC and need to get away from the hustle of it all, Central Park is definitely the place go.

Fashion Spotlight
Oyinkan Fashion Week isn’t just about the runways and presentations, but also discovering new and interesting people during the week-long event. One such individual is the beautiful Oyinkan Ogunleye, a style blogger at Befitting Style. We wanted to learn more about her and share her unique style so read on...
308
VRAI Magazine
VRAI Magazine (VM): Tell us bit of who you are, where you’re from and what you do. Oyinkan Ogunleye: I’m a creative from Nigeria who is highly influenced by her mother. As a jack of many trades, it’s hard for me to identify with just one thing so the term creative, sums it all up. Creating my style blog, Befitting Style has led me to work in Digital Marketing. I love it because it allows my creativity to flourish. I see art in many things and can make something out of nothing. VM: We love your name, can you tell us more about it? Oyinkan: Oyinkan is the nickname for my full first name, Oyinkansola. Oyinkansola means honey drops into blessings and wealth. VM: When did you discover that you had a passion for fashion? Oyinkan: I discovered my passion for fashion as a little kid. Back then, fashion shows would be aired live on TV. It’s so surreal to me that I get to view the collections in person during Fashion Week, as my mom and I used to watch it on TV every season during my early adolescent years. VM: How would you describe your style and what makes it unique? Oyinkan: Whenever I get asked this question, it’s usually hard to answer because I feel like I can wear anything and make it work. My enjoyment for making something out of nothing is what makes my style unique. I tend to gravitate towards unique pieces that no one would really want and add my flare to it. Even though I’ve been wearing lots of solids lately, pastel hues and mixing prints will always be my favorite. Because I’m Nigerian, gele, turbans, ankara and lace fabrics are embedded in me. My current favorite style is a jumpsuit because it’s so easy to throw on, dress up and dress down. Because of that, I wear jumpsuits while travelling and also for special occasions. When it comes to accessories, layered necklaces are a must so I tend to have on 3 or 4 necklaces at a time. A good heel is always necessary and I usually go for crossbody bags and clutches over totes and satchels. In all things, confidence is key. As long as you’re confident with your style, you’ll always look great.
309
VM: How has your style evolved? Oyinkan: I subconsciously stopped wearing denim pants at the age of 18. I was about 20 years old when I realized that I haven’t worn jeans in a while. At that point, I no longer cared to wear it again. I opt for jean jackets a few times a year and I have a huge appreciation for denim jumpsuits (even though I haven’t worn one in a while). A couple of years ago, I was in love with button down tops! Now my current obsession involves one piece clothing such as dresses and jumpsuits. It speeds up the getting dressed process. VM: How long have you been coming to NYFW? Oyinkan: I’ve been attending NYFW for 4 seasons.
VM: Finally, what’s your best piece of fashion advice for someone who’s trying to discover their style? Or for someone who’s on a budget and just starting out? Oyinkan: For someone who is trying to discover their style, I would suggest wearing what makes you feel good regardless of whether it’s trending or not. It’s easy for many to feel confident in what they’re wearing if it’s trending because that gives you the validation of society. If you live your life trying to please people, you’ll never be truly happy so don’t focus on that. In all things, learning yourself is more important. Get to know yourself and gain confidence in who you truly are. Love you for you and don’t care about what society thinks of your style. The styles that you see yourself constantly reaching for, instantly become a part of your personal style. Money does not make you any more stylish than the next person so for those who are on a budget and just starting out, style is about how you coordinate your pieces, not about how much money you spend on an item.
VM: What advice would you would give to style/beauty bloggers trying to attend NYFW? Oyinkan: Work hard consistently and remember that this isn’t a sprint. It’s a marathon. Don’t compare yourself to others because we all have individual paths. Don’t follow what others are doing because it will keep you from embracing your individuality and most importantly, stay true to yourself in everything that you do. Hard work will always pay off. VM: What’s your process for picking out your looks for each day of NYFW and how far in advance do you start preparing your looks? Oyinkan: I wore a lot of one piece clothing this season since that’s my current obsession. I prepare my looks a day or two before NYFW. VM: For the SS18 season, what were some of your favorite highlights? Oyinkan: I loved the elegance John Paul Ataker presents every season. Michael Costello always makes me want to go to attend a soiree as he perfectly incorporated tulle and lace into his collection. VM: What trends caught your eye? Oyinkan: Pastels and mixed prints are definitely here to stay as well as lace and chiffon pieces.

Watch the runway finale

NYC from the High Line by Danny de la Cruz
Downtime and time to sightsee aren’t exactly part of the schedule while crisscrossing Manhattan and racing from one show to the next. But, when I found myself with an opportunity to explore, granted, while on the way to the next runway venue, I took advantage of the moment. I had finished a presentation on Saturday evening and found myself directly at the entrance to the High Line. I didn’t have to be at the Philipp Plein show until 9 pm that night, so I figured that I’d head North via the High Line above the traffic. A year ago, I had a chance to explore part of the High Line but I’ve never walked it from end to end —until now, and it wasn’t the original plan. As the sun set and the lights of the city twinkled, I had a chance to see a different side of this elevated path filled with greenery, art work, great views of the city above the traffic and of course, plenty of people watching opportunities along the way. And for the architecture lover in me, there’s so much visual interest in all the new buildings popping up along the High Line. As I kept walking, I would check my phone to see if I was getting closer to the runway venue and sure enough, I was headed in the right direction. I figured that I’d follow the path until I got close to the street. I soon found myself at the end of the High Line which ended 3 blocks south of where I needed to be. I had walked the entire length and enjoyed every minute of it. If you find yourself in NYC with some time, explore the High Line in the evening—it’s a beautiful way to experience this part of the city.
