Brief
Response
To design an album cover for an artist or band out of the 7 choices on the secret 7 website. In your own style reflecting the artists song and not using any of the song information on the artwork.
The chosen artist for the brief was The Maccabees and the given song for the brief was ‘GO’ The song talks about a relationship with cracks and that is broken.

Research & Inspiration
Secret 7 take tracks from 7 of the best-known musicians around and press each one 100 times to 7” vinyl. We then invite creativities from around the world to interpret the tracks in their own style for every 7”. 700 sleeves are exhibited and then sold for £50 a piece.
The research taken when designing for secret 7 consisted of looking at abstract illustrations & existing album artwork. Looking at similar bands to the Maccabees and there own actual artwork to gain more inspiration for the genre of music. 02

Development First experimenting and trying to produce something thats abstract taken inspiration and colours from Robert hunters illustrations. This approach didn’t feel conceptual enough so the idea was further developed.
The idea progressed onto a sun like shape mentioned in the song with cracks and parts missing. The song was still quite warming so the lighter colour palette was appropriate. 03

Final Taking inspiration from the lyrics ‘In light of what was come to come It was not enough’ I wanted to design a vector illustration which represented not only sun and light but the ground that was broken up and not a whole shape anymore, like their relationship.
The colours chosen reflect not only song but also the Maccabees album, which has been described as humble and heartfelt.
