Google announces partner Chromebooks Source: http://vr-zone.com/articles/google-announces-partnerchromebooks/12169.html May 11th, 2011
Not entirely unexpected, Google's first Chromebook partners will be Acer and Samsung and both companies have a model that will go on sale in the US on the 15th of June. Surprisingly the two models are quite different in terms of not only in terms of features, but also cost. In fact, the only similarity is the fact that they're both black and running Google's Chrome OS. Acer's Chromebook is an 11.6-inch netbook as far as the specifications goes, as at its core is an unspecified dual core Atom processor. For whatever reason there's no mention of system memory or storage space, although we wouldn't expect either to be particularly huge, especially as the Cr-48 only came with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The screen should have a resolution of 1366x768 pixels as far as we can tell, but there's no explicit mention of the resolution apart from it being "HD".
Other parts of the specifications include dual band Wi-Fi, optional 3G (most likely cost option), an HD webcam, two USB 2.0 ports, a memory card reader a pair of audio jacks and surprisingly an HDMI port. There's also a "full size Chrome keyboard" and the Acer Chromebook is using an Acer "floating island" type keyboard and it also has an "oversize fullyclickable trackpad". The battery is said to be good for up to 6h of continuous usage, not a huge surprise considering this is pretty much a netbook and the whole thing weighs in at a very portable 1.34kg. Samsung's Chromebook on the other hand is slightly larger at 12.1-inches it's surprisingly using a 16:10 display with 1280x800 resolution. Maybe this is a good way of getting rid of old stock? We're looking at another unspecified dual core Atom CPU here and once again no mention of memory or storage capacity. As with the Acer, the Samsung sports dualband Wi-Fi, optional 3G, an HD webcam, two USB 2.0 ports, a memory card reader, but seemingly only a single audio jack and a "mini-VGA port" which is kind of frustrating.
