Editorial The lustrum month is over and I’m sure that every single one of you took at least part in one activity. Maybe you helped us braking the world record. Or you went with your beatiful date to the Lustrum Gala! Maybe you didn’t like to party but you are more a person that likes to build stuff. Well then there’s the DeBaco event, where you had to build a cart that drove off a ramp, was the place to be for you! Whatever type of person you are, I don’t doubt that the lustrum was enjoyable for you in some way!

concerning activities that took place during the lustrum month. Also, several committees that organised an activity are featured in this brake and will share their experiences with you. During the lustrum month there were so many parties that you might have woken up one morning with a hangover. Probably some of you did after the gala with open bar. Well after reading this brake hangovers won’t be a problem for you anymore as we have made the perfect guide how to cure a hangover!

So after all this craziness, I can proudly present the lustrum edition of the brake! After the spectacular lustrum month we created a lustrum brake as cherry on the cake. This brake contains multiple articles

This brake also contains an interview with the 70th board. They had a great year so far and we wanted to know how they experienced it, what things they had to deal with and more importantly if they

As this year is almost over, we wanted to interview the 70th board to see how they experienced this year. The first group that we interviewed consisted out of Sjoerd, Nout and Anouk. To put it simply, they are the Daily Board of the VSV.

thing goes according to plan with the commisionarys we don’t have anything to do. Except that every phonecall, emails and bills are received by us. Which we, if it’s nessecary, pass on to the others. However, if we need to intervene with something with relation to finances, members, communication or activities, then we try as a team to get the VSV back on track. Anouk: I want to add that we are called the Daily Board for a reason. Basicly all the every-day things start at us and we then look for who is most suitable for this or whether someone else should do it or should I do it. Sjoerd: And, with the Daily Board we also look together with the MeerjarenComissie to the future of the VSV and where we see the VSV going to between now and 2025.

Board Interview Together you form the first island (Sjoerd: We rather call it the mainland). What are the functions of the mainland? Nout: I can give you three clear answers on that. First, one part of the mainland is the financial control of the VSV. My job is to keep track of all the cashflows. It is important for every activity that money is spend but also earned. Second, a study association is nothing without it’s members. We need to exchange information with our members. The database of the members has to stay up-to-date. Third, there is also someone needed to look if the main goals are achieved. Sjoerd: Yes, basically, if every-

What is something that annoys you or is typical for one of your mainland members? Anouk: Well one of these gen-

enjoyed their year as board of our beautiful study association. I also have sad news. This is our last edition of the Brake that you will receive this year. Except if you are going to the freshmen weekend. Then you will receive a special edition! However, we as Brake’cie had a lot of fun this year entertaining our readers with our funny but also serious articles. We are sure that the Brake’Cie next year is also going to be awesome! Happy reading! Your editor in chief, ROGER HAK

tlemen, I think I shouldn’t say his name, has the worst smellings farts ever. Escpecially after a night of drinking. Sometimes this smell is so extreme that I have to depart from the mainland and swim to one of the islands. Sjoerd: Nout always talks and shouts to his phone and computer. Sometimes we hear him telling stories and we ask what is up? “Oh nothing, I was talking to my computer.” And maybe to most funny thing is when he pierces a bill. He slams on it like you need 200 kg to pierce it -Tuduuum- and with a satisfied smile he stands there with a bill in his hands. Does anyone of your mainland members have special talents? Nout: There happens a lot within the VSV. A lot of projects, activies etc. I think that Anouk and Sjoerd are very good at keeping a clear overview of what is going on. They cleary see how everything is interconnected with each other.

Here’s the BrakeCie! From left to right: Valère, Jori, Roger, Rintati & Jan.

What are you going to do after your year in the board? Anouk: Next year I’m going to study again. I’m going to do a master in Control and Simulation. Just like Nout and Sjoerd. What is the most awkward situation you’ve been in when you were in function? Sjoerd: Sometimes it gets really busy with phonecalls. And that resulted in a confusing situation once. I was calling with a shop from The Hague to order a foam matress. However meanwhile I got called by member of honour Mr. Droste (also from The Hague). So I saw the phonenumber on the display starting with the same numbers as the matress shop. I pressed on “call back” and said: “Is this the foam matress shop?”. “Uhh no this is the Droste Residence”. Well that was quite awkward. What is the biggest happening in aerospace in the past 5 years according to you? Nout: For me that’s Rosetta. It’s so wonderful that we as humans were able to design something with metal and rubber, that is able to land safely on a comet. What do you prefer, a “broodje Leo” or döner from the Alev? Nout: Leo Sjoerd: Leo Anouk: Leo. I actually have never eaten döner at the Alev. Sjoerd: We actually have a “broodje Leonardo Da Vinci”. We made that for the lustrum in collaboration with butcher Leo van Vliet. I think you can still order it at Leo. Just ask for it. What is one of your personal highlights of your year as member of the board? Nout: Well the moment I was standing on top of the ramp at the DeBaco event. I thought to myself. Wow, it’s so cool and unique what we organize and do. Sjoerd: As a group I think the

4 | BRAKE

highlight of this year is the Extraordinary General Members Assembly which was organised by us. My personal highlight is the improvement of myself during the year. I take part in extern meetings with wellknown people within the aerospace industries. And what I encountered is that in the beginning of the year I didn’t have much to say. However, through the year I felt that I could express my ideas and thoughts better and they listen really well. I realised that I really improved through the year. Would you rather fight a horsesized duck or one hundred ducksized horses? Sjoerd: hmm, you know, ducks have those very sharp teeth. If that’s also horse-sized then the teeth are super big. But on the other hand, if one hundred little horses are attacking you and biting you then it’s over within no time. A horse mouth in the size of a duck is comparable to a human mouth right? Now imagine that you have 100 human mouths that are biting you everywhere. However, if you just stand on one small object and they come running towards you, you just kick them away. Well, with a horsesized duck, if he grabs your head one time with his beak then it’s just over. He can also just fly away when you are winning the fight. If you grab a spear to pierce him he simply flies away. What is in your opinion the best Brake article of this year so far? Nout: Braking the ice! Anouk: I found the article about you guys doing a pub crawl the most amusing. Especially because you did not really censure it. Sjoerd: Yeah that one was awesome Anouk: Oh and I found it also funny that you compare bananas with airplanes. How do you look back on the lustrum year? Nout: It was super awesome.

Sjoerd: Well first of all it’s a privilege to be a lustrum board. That means that in the previous four years the board saved up money for us so that we could organise extra activities. That also means that there is some kind of pressure because you need to prove that you organize all those activities and you make good use of the money that has been saved. Do you want to say something to VSV’s active members? Nout: If you ever come up with a good idea for an activity and you need money for that, come to us and we together can look if something can be arranged. Sjoerd: I want to share three important wisdoms. First, Communicate always good with your team members. Second, Always make sure you have a plan B. If anything goes wrong you can always switch to plan B. Third, You can ask anything. As long as you are polite. Is there anything else you want to add? Anouk: “Aaaaighttt”. Nout likes to shout random things during meetings and this is one of them. Richard Termaat and Menno Linssen are part of the second island. They are on the island because their functions both have to do with contact between the VSV and the faculty. What are your functions? Menno: I am commissioner internal affairs, which means that I am the contact between the faculty and the VSV for everything that is not related to education. I am for example responsible for the Atmosfeer because it’s in the faculty and for Airbase because it took place in the building. Richard: I am commissioner educational affairs. This means I am the contact between the VSV and all things related to education. I evaluate the bachelor and the master courses with the B- committees and

I am in touch with educational and student’s affairs. Next to that I am responsible for the book sales, so everyone can buy their study books as low-priced as possible. I do this with Nout, the thesauriër. What are you going to do after your year in the board? Richard: I finished my bachelor last year and registered for the master Air Traffic Control and Operations, with is part of the Control and Operations track. Next to that I hope to get a job as TA as project mentor for the second year. Menno: I am going to finish my bachelor, which will certainly succeed. I am also chosen to be in the FSR (Faculty Student Council). I also signed up for a job as TA for the first year projects. I’m also interested to be in the meerjarencommissie of the VSV, to talk about the policy of the association in the near future. Menno, what is Richard’s shine factor? Menno: What is he good at? Richard is someone who is always capable of thinking very soberly, and not in the sense of when he’s had a drink… Richard: Because that’s not true Menno: No, no, but honestly. He is someone who can put the rest of us with both feet on the ground again. Richard, do you have any crazy stories about Menno? Richard: He is certainly the one with the craziest stories, but I don’t think we could put them in the Brake… But he too has a great contribution to the group. If everyone including himself is tired or done with everything, he is still able to cheer everyone up. He is really positive and it’s always good to have someone like that in the group.

Does he have strange habits? Richard: Yes! He is really scared of balloons! *laughter* Menno: Yes, I really dislike noisy explosions. But did you know that there is a relation between fear for explosions and intelligence? Or let me state it differently, people with a higher IQ have a higher chance of fear for bangs. Menno, we’ve been told that you know a lot of random VSV facts, so educate us! Menno: Did you know that the Airshow previously was held at Rotterdam Airport, when it was still called Zestienhoven? Richard: And that more than 100.000 people were present? Menno: Did you know that … Wait, you can’t put this in the Brake. Another one: Did you know that Leonardo da Vinci was left-handed, but could write with both hands and mirrored!? Why are you the best island? Menno: We cause the largest coffee consumption, and I think we make the best jokes. Richard: I am sure of that.

Which board member is always eating? Menno: That’s me. Richard: He could eat a whole bread. Menno: Yes, I did that. Richard: At breakfast alone he already has eaten more than me in a whole day. Menno: If I see that someone leaves food in the room after lunch, it will shortly be gone. I am sort of a trashcan when it comes to that. What Brake article did you like best? Menno: For me it was the article about your adventures through Delft, the pub crawl. You were very honest and shameless about your experiences. The articles about the First World War were also very good, because they are completely different. Richard: I liked it that my story was in the Braking the ice article. (He is referring to Brake #2 where there was a picture of a Richard who couldn’t Brake the ice.) What do you want to say to the active VSV members? Menno: Continue to develop yourself! Richard: Without you this year

BRAKE | 5

wouldn’t be possible. Menno: That’s true. Enjoy your time in Delft, because studying might seem long but that’s an illusion. Before you know it you’re a freshman in your master, like Richard. Richard: Then you suddenly have to get really serious. Menno: Yes! But thanks for all the input. And enjoy your time at the VSV! The third island consists of our beloved QQ’er Jasmijn Büskens and Thom van Ostaijen. They are together on an island because their functions both have to do with affairs outside the faculty. What are your functions? Thom: I am commissioner external affairs. I am responsible for the contacts within the (aerospace) industry. I visit all (future) business contacts to see if we can establish collaboration, for example for sponsor deals. This way we can realise and finance all the activities the VSV organises. Jasmijn: I am commissioner career, so I mainly focus on the master students and how the VSV can put them in touch with companies. In this function, I also am part of the team of the Delftse Bedrijvendagen. What are you going to do after your year in the board? Thom: I will continue with my second master year. I do Airtraffic Management Airport & Safety, which is part of Control and Operations. For this I also am going to do an internship for Kenya airlines, so I’ll go to Nairobi for five months. Jasmijn: I will start with Control and Operations. You’re not the only one within the board! Jasmijn: Yes, that’s true. But there are two directions within this master and we are divided on these. In your functions, you both have met a lot of important people in the industry. But who has impressed

6 | BRAKE

you the most? Thom: For me that’s Martin Schröder. He is over eighty years old and when he was twenty-four he started his own airline. He has sixty years of experience in the aircraft industry and after an hour talking with him, he has already given ten life lessons. He really can inspire and motivate to work hard during your life. Jasmijn: I was also thinking about him. At the VSV we have a lot of members of honour. We visit them all, but he can tell the most epic stories. He is also very involved despite his age. What is the most awkward situation you’ve been in when you were in function? Thom: One time I was invited to a network event with Sjoerd. We were waiting for the barrier with the sprinter (the ultimate VSV – van) in front of the building where the event was. The sprinter is known to be very noisy, which is an understatement. When we accelerated, he totally flied of the handle! We hoped nobody had heard it, but when we walked into the event, the first one we met was Birgit Otto (COO of Schiphol Group). He said: ‘What a spectacular entrance you made!’ So that was a little bit awkward. What is your favorite drink? Thom: This speaks for itself. My favorites are of course Jupi-LR, a “Raketje” and a “Straaljager”. Jasmijn: A beer! A Hoegaarden Wit is never wrong. Who’s the best at wedstrijdtafelen? Thom: I wouldn’t put myself first, so I’ll go with Menno. I really think he is practicing ever since he was born. I can picture him sitting wedstrijdtafelend in his baby chair. Jasmijn: I think so too. Sjoerd is always the one to keep the quality of the table high. He has really strict rules! Thom: But he is mostly his own victim! Jasmijn: Or Richard!

Would you rather fight a horsesized duck or a hundred duck-sized horses? Thom: This is the hardest question I’ve had until now. I always say: you only fight people of your own size, so I don’t think it’s fair to fight a hundred little horses. You could just use your height to crush them. So I will go with the horse-sized duck. Jasmijn: I won’t. I already think ducks are creepy when they are small, so I hope to never encounter such a big one. How do you look back on the lustrum year? Jasmijn: We did a lot of awesome things. Thom: I love to see the enthusiasm of all the active VSV members. We hope that they will look back on this year’s activities and think: Wow, that was epic. What was is in your opinion the best Brake article of this year so far? Thom: I really liked the article about the Belgian Beer Drink. Jasmijn: Definitely ‘A drunk BrakeCie is a happy BrakeCie.’ Just how I know you! Thom: Yes, that was also pretty funny. Do you want to say something to VSV’s active members? Thom: This time of your life is the time that you can learn and study the most but also the time that you can have the most fun. Make profit of both! 70th board adt top 7 according to the board: 1. Sjoerd 2. Thom 3. Jasmijn 4. Anouk 5. Nout 6. Richard 7. Menno THE BRAKECIE

In our enthusiasm we also asked every member of the board to draw their dream plane (or spacecraft) for us. Some of the board members were less happy than other to cooperate with this request, but luckily everyone did. Try to figure out who drew what! It shouldn’t be too difficult, there are names and signatures everywhere and it should be very clear who drew a Lynx.

UP UP & AWAY! We still cherish that one very fond memory. I believe many of you do too. It was a sunny day. One of those days you remember. It had been rainy and windy, but all of that finally seemed to be over. I recall how I woke up that morning, wishing that I’d gone to bed a couple of hours earlier the day before. I’m sure you know how it feels. Little did you however know what we had been up to the night before, and what was still to come.

There was so little time, and so much to do. Meticulous planning in the months leading up to this day prepared us for what was about to happen. We met in utter secrecy. You had no idea of what was going on. Of course, a large part of this happened whilst you were still in

8 | BRAKE

your comfy and warm bed (jealous much). The next morning, you perhaps rode your bike along the Grote Markt, somewhere close to the Wilhelminapark, but most probable across the TU Delft campus. The clues were more than obvious. Scattered around the city and the university were subtle hints. Of what was going to take place that same day, but also what lay in store for the upcoming month. There is no way you could have missed those most beautiful, lustrum blue markings, nor the army of students and drones that were unleashed only slightly after. Let’s just give you all a small inside view into everything that happened up till the first of May, approximately 14.14h. The evening before, the UP’cie, 70th board, and some fanatical FoCo’s set off to decorate the city and the campus. Armed with roughly 14 cans of blue chalk spray, white and blue balloons, posters, stickers, a bunch of lustrum merchandise, walkie-talkies and even a homebuilt aircraft, we left the Atmosfeer. Oh, do not forget the many, many cans of energy drinks. A very strict

planning led us all the way from the faculty to the centre of the city. As if by magic, statues were dressed in black and white shirts and lustrum logo’s and arrows appeared pointing to the Aula, the epicentre of the upcoming lustrumstunt. Some of us even dared to enter the ice cold waters of the 3mE realm. Unfortunately the hard work by a man known as ‘Uncle Corvers’ went down – literally – and never even saw the daylight, as the aircraft that was intended to cover up that big ugly boat sunk shortly after it was installed. As a final statement, the epic lustrum logo was sprayed onto the paving of the Grote Markt, where it is still to be seen today. But that was just the beginning. Having slept some 4.14 hours, the UP’cie re-assembled at around 8 in the morning at the most beautiful faculty in Delft, the faculty of Aerospace Engineering. After quickly loading the Sprinter full of stuff, the team set course to the aula, where an epic lustrumstunt was prepared. 45 minutes before the start of the stunt, a line had already begun to assemble to profit as much as possible from the free popsicles, drones, hot dogs and sugar spiders. Within no time all the drones were given away and on the count of 14 200 drones were released into the air. With almost 170 drones going up in the air (some even flew over 3me) a world record was successfully set. The airplane escape slide, that refused to open because of its stage fright, would only open after everyone had gone away, providing a nice feeling of closure for the UP’cie after a day filled with epickness. The stunt thus was a huge success and only the start of a great month; with the lustrum opening party and the debaco challenge to look forward to, the lustrum month was already a success! The UPCIE

Lustrum Gala The Lustrum Gala, held on the 29th of May, has been the grand finale of the lustrum month. It is the event that is longed for and looked back upon for many years. It is the one time that the students of Delft, and in particular the VSV, class up and leave Delft to spend the evening with dates on an external location. And it was the very last time to celebrate the 70th year of our beloved society. For months our committee has been working on a number of things which together created a fantastic gala. After having found the perfect venue, the search began for entertainment, which we found in a great live band and a dj, who would continue until the early hours. Then, we spent our time on the aspects that make this gala more exciting than any other gala that you will ever go to.

The “Galaxski committee really enjoyed organizing this magnificent event that has concluded our lustrum month and we hope that you will remember it for a very long time. MATYS VOORN

Airshow The VSV Breda Airshow 2015 On August 29, it’s time for a beautiful edition of the airshow: the VSV Breda Airshow 2015! The Airshow is organized by the VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ in collaboration with Breda International Airport. It will prove itself yet again to be a day full of excitement, thrills and sensation, and the best: the Airshow has free entrance!

During the day, the sky will be filled with great flight demonstrations and cool aerobatics performed by a large number of national and international teams! Think of beautiful plane formations performing loops, corkscrews and many other aerobatics stunts. On the ground a wide range of magnificent planes will be presented. So you can see the planes up close! Also, there is an traditional ‘airmarket’ present in the form of a large number of shops throughout the grounds. You can go here for a hot dog, some fries or awesome plane goodies. In short, it

12 | BRAKE

is one big party! The previous edition attracted more than 12.000 visitors, and this year the organization will organize an even bigger event. The organization of the VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ has been preparing for this Airshow since the beginning of the academic year. The theme of this year’s Airshow will be ‘Dutch Powered Innovation in Aviation’, which will highlight the on-going development in aviation history. We will give special attention to the Dutch contribution in aviation, because although the Netherlands is a small country, it has had a big impact on the aviation industry. The history of innovation in aviation will be beautifully portrayed on a display of dozens of aircraft models, which will be chronologically arranged. We as the organization will not only look back at history, but we

also want to look ahead. Current and future innovations are therefore important aspects of the VSV Breda Airshow and they will be highlighted in the exposition of aircraft. One example of future innovations on the Airshow is the presence of the PAL-V, one of the first vehicles that can be used as a car and an airplane! In short, do you want to end your summer vacation in a spectacular way? Mark the date august 29th in your agenda and join the most beautiful Airshow in the Netherlands, the VSV Breda Airshow! Of course it is great if you can join the most beautiful Airshow of the year, but you can also contribute to this great event yourself. By participating as a volunteer, you will experience the Airshow from an even better perspective! You can send an email to info@vliegshow. com to show your interest. KEVIN GIESSEN

DeBaCo

This year the Design Battle Competition returned to a lustrum classic. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ we organized ‘Met een zucht door de lucht’. Next to the Zuidkolk in Delft an 8 meter high ramp was built of which participating teams had to fly with their self-built airplanes. The team that would fly the furthest wins the incredible first prize, refueling F16’s in-flight from a KDC-10. On the early morning of Sunday May 3rd the participants drove their vehicles in a nice parade from the building location to the ramp. The sheer quality of their creations was astonishing. There were airplanes, delta wings, a helicopter and even a perfect copy of the lustrum caravan. Near the ramp everything was ready as well. The ramp had been completed, the dj had completed his sound check and all the foods and drinks were ready for the spectators. The dark sky above wouldn’t be able to withhold us from a great afternoon. Around midday it was time for

the first aircraft to fly of the ramp. Caspar took place in his Luftwaffe inspired creation and made, after a gentle push over the edge, a very successful maiden flight. Some very creative vehicles followed, but none of them was really able to fly a significant distance. All of this changed when the senate took place on the ramp. With their years of aerospace knowledge they had created a gorgeous aircraft, inspired by the Wright Flyer I. It turned out to be just as successful. After a quick acceleration down the ramp she glided peacefully over the water to record distance. It turned out this successful glide wouldn’t be outdone.

In the end of the day the AirCo went home with a hot air balloon flight for their creative design, and pilot Floris with a skydive for his spectacular flight. Everybody else went home with a lovely memory to this incredibly fun and successful event! One thing’s for sure, the 14th lustrum has been opened with a bang! TOMMY SMITS
