PROJECT STATEMENTS.

Project Statement This thesis will focus on the design of a built environment made up of a 36,000 square foot, four story Boutique hotel located in the Republic of Singapore, a maritime Southeast Asian country. Limitations include the square footage being addressed and the form of the existing building. The developer is placing the hotel in the capital city of the Republic of Singapore, Singapore. This city is known for its diverse population, lively culture, and immense tourism. It attracted 18.5 million tourists in 2018, more than three times Singapore’s total population. A main contribution to its tourism is it is a major hub for business, conferences, and events, making it one of the most visited cities in the world. The Singapore hospitality industry wants to make an effort to enforce sustainable design through improved material research with an additional improved approach to wayfinding and lighting to provide luxurious comfort to visitors.

Thesis Statement A built environment that aims to enhance sustainable design and environmental responsibility has the potential to positively affect users and and improve their wellbeing as well as to improve the surrounding city in efforts to provide a progressive future.

SITE ANALYSIS + INSPIRATION.

SITE ANALYSIS. Location: Marina Bay Neighborhood, Singapore Address: 70 #01-05 Collyer Quay, Customs House, Singapore 049323 Neighborhood Population: 41,510 City Population: 5.8 Million City Area: 277 Square Miles

Collyer Quay is a road in Dowtown Core, Singapore and is situated adjacent to Marina Bay. The site is located right on the water allowing for views of the Marina Bay. By being located right on the water, the site does not back up to any other infrastructure, allowing for a un-interrupted view and plenty of natural daylight, adding to the sustainable qualities that make up this hotel.

INSPIRATION.

The design of Hotel 541 is inspired by the 541 foot tall Singapore Flyer that is located within the Marina Bay Neighborhood and acts as a landmark within the local area. The observation wheel provides a 360 degree visual experience to locals and visitors, representing vertical circulation and the idea of a strong central core. The design of the observation wheel informs the materiality chosen for Hotel 541.

CONCEPT & PROCESS.

CONCEPT STATEMENT.

The inspiration behind this hotel is the Singapore Flyer, located near the project’s site in Marina Bay, Singapore. This 541 foot tall Ferris wheel provides locals and tourists with a 360 degree view of Singapore’s skyline. It serves as Asia’s largest observation wheel that occupies a prominent place in Singapore’s city center. When looking at the movement and positioning of a Ferris wheel, it rotates about a central axis allowing the visual experience of the user to constantly be moving in a continuous motion. The wheel serves as vertical circulation within the city core of Singapore as well as a landmark for the city. This design takes a similar approach and role as a Ferris wheel and the Singapore Flyer by incorporating a monumental staircase that acts as the core and central axis for the hotel. Similar to how the Singapore Flyer is a landmark for the city, the staircase is a landmark for the hotel. The staircase provides circulation on all four floors and connects the hotel vertically. Each floor branches off the central staircase informing this circulation, providing guests with a visual experience. A similar experience of observation is employed through the use of an open to below wrapped around the central axis along with an observation lounge placed on each floor that mimics the passenger cars that rotate upright, allowing visitors and locals to observe from each floor similar to how they might observe the city on the Singapore Flyer as the cars rise in height.

MONUMENTAL STAIR.

The staircase acts as a core for the hotel and is positioned at the center informing circulation. In addition, it provides vertical circulation and connects all four floors of the hotel and can be viewed from all four levels. As the guest rises in height, making their way up to each floor, it mimics the upward rotation of the passenger carts on the Singapore Flyer. This monumental staircase improves the wellness of guests by using the intriguing design to attract guests and encourage them to actively move instead of taking the elevator. The form and build of the stairs includes sustainble materials such as glass and metal that are locally sourced. The glass and metal materials of the staircase were inspired by the construction of the Singapore Flyer, and the transparency and metal details that it entails.

BAR + LOUNGE.

Design Considerations The bar stools seen in this rendering were used to mimic the upward circular motion and round shape of the Singapore Flyer. Custom built nook seating was designed in order to include a similar feeling as sitting in the passenger cart on a ferris wheel. The design allows for the guest to feel enclosed similar to a passenger cart, but provides transparency by using the glass material. The ceiling mirrors the seating in order to create a symmetrical and balanced design.

.

RESTAURANT. Design Considerations A custom built metal ceiling structure is placed over the dining/lounge area within the restaurant in order to capture the metal characteristics of the ferris wheel. This ceiling structure allows the space to become strongly defined and contributes to zoning for the design of the hotel. It helps to frame the overall space as well as providing guests with privacy. The restaurant is placed to the far left of the building in order to have access to the windows promotiing daylight and city views.

OBSERVATION LOUNGE. Sustainable Considerations LED lighting and Scraplight pendants, made of FSCcertified paper sourced from forests, serve as sustainable products. The paint chosen contains no VOC’s allowing for improved air quality, and it benefits the overall health of the guests and employees. In addition, each guestroom or suite is keyless entry allowing for the use of less plastic.

Design Considerations The second observation lounge is located on the second floor opposite the side of the first observation lounge. It is placed adjacent to the transparent monumental staircase allowing guests to obtain a visual experience through the use of the locally sourced glass material creating a “lookout spot” that surrounds the staircase on each level. Guests are able to view both the staircase and the spaces surrounding it.

FINISHES & FURNITURE.

MATERIALS. The material pallette was inspired by the colors of the sky as well as the metal and transparent characteristics of the ferris wheel. The material choices are kept airy and light to represent floating in the sky, and bright pops of orange are added to build contrast and provide a complimentary color to the sky blue. Patterns within the material pallette represent the static and flowing movement of clouds within the sky and the movement of the ferris wheel. All materials are locally sourced.

BRANDING.

BRANDING.

The idea behind the logo for Hotel 541 stems from the total height of the Singapore Flyer. The logo is made up of the numbers 5,4, and 1 representing the total height of the observation wheel that is equivalent to 541 feet. The number “5” is smaller and the number “4” and “1” gradually get taller, symbolizing the rising height and continuous change in the users’ visual experience.
