VU-nT2 dutch as a Second language
dUTCH AT EVEry lEVEl Welcome to VU-NT2: the place to learn the Dutch language. You can take a course to suit your own ambitions, either in the evening or during the day. Students are grouped according to ability, and work together to improve reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, as well as their vocabulary and grammar. You will also be introduced to the culture and traditions of Dutch society. The academic background of VU-NT2 ensures you will be enrolled in a high quality course, specifically developed for those who have already completed their secondary education (at HAVO level or higher). teaching methods, will guarantee you a high return on your efforts. What can a language course mean for you? • You will learn language skills that enable you to live comfortably in the Netherlands and be successful at work or in your studies. You can follow a course that teaches you the Dutch you need in everyday life, or a course which takes you up to the level of the NT2 State Exam, programme II. • You will be awarded a VU-NT2 certificate for passing the final exam. • You will increase your chances of passing the State Exam, with the help of an exam training programme, scheduled immediately after completion of the course. Tailor-made courses on location VU-NT2 provides tailor-made courses for companies and organizations, which can also be taught on location. DAYTIME COURSES
Dutch for the NT2 State Exam II INTENSIVE
You want to learn Dutch quickly and at a high level, for example because you are planning to start working or studying at university or HBO level in the Netherlands. You are able to spend a lot of time on the course (at least 16 hours per week self study). What will you achieve? This course offers a solid basis for using the Dutch language. After passing the level 4 course you will be able to take NT2 State Exam, programme II. This means you will be able to speak Dutch well and spontaneously. You will be able to understand difficult texts, write detailed text on a wide array of topics, express your opinion and participate in discussions. The level 4 course contains State Exam training. For students: 8,5 – 10 ECTS per level.
State Exam Training
(part of Dutch for the NT2 State Exam, level 4) You applied to take the NT2 State Exam, programme II. You want extra practice with mock exams. Participation is also possible if you are not following one of our courses.
What will you achieve? During a week, you will practice with exams for every skill, to ensure you will have a good idea of what is expected of you.
Everyday Dutch
non-intensive (saturday) You do not need to know Dutch for your work or study, but you want to learn the language to use it in everyday life. You have a preference for online learning, in addition to a group session on Saturday. What will you achieve? In level 1 you learn how to use everyday expressions and basic sentences, so that you can introduce yourself, do your groceries and engage in simple conversation. In level 2 you learn frequently used sentences and expressions for going shopping, for travelling and for talking to Dutch relatives and friends. For students: 3 ECTS per level. After Everyday Dutch 1 you can also continue with evening course level 2. After Everyday Dutch 2 you can continue with a day course level 2 or evening course level 3. For more information, see Course Plan.
EVENING COURSES Dutch for work and study
Dutch for work and study
You are working or studying at a high level (HBO or university). You are looking for a course which is taught in the evening and requires some selfstudy. At the very least you want to reach the ‘beginner’ level, but you also want the option of continuing to a higher level.
You are a native speaker of German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic or Afrikaans, which means you will be able to learn Dutch quickly. You are working or studying in the Netherlands at a high level (HBO or University).
semi-intensive
What will you achieve? After 2 course periods you will have reached the ‘Elementary’ level, after 4 course periods you will be at the ‘Intermediate’ level and after 6 periods you will be at ‘Upper Intermediate’ (State Exam II). This means you will be able to speak Dutch well and spontaneously, understand difficult texts, write detailed text on a wide array of topics, express your opinion and participate in discussions. For students: 3 ECTS per level.
quick
What will you achieve? This course is identical to the semi-intensive course, but it is taught in half the time. After 3 course periods you will have reached the ‘Upper Intermediate’ level. For students: 3 ECTS per level.
Everyday Dutch
non-intensive (evening) This course is identical to the day course Everyday Dutch, but the group lesson is taught on Monday evening, rather than Saturday morning.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT OUR COURSES
“The teacher is helpful with explaining the material. She also helps in creating a good atmosphere in the classroom.” “Overall I find this course very well designed and delivered, nice work!” “I am satisfied now that I speak Dutch with my friend or in the supermarket, starting with just some simple sentences.” “I think it was good that the class takes a “learning by doing” approach, i.e. that it asks participants to speak Dutch right on. That takes away a lot of the “pressure” associated with studying grammar and learning vocab.”
