Mining manners As if Canada's domestic resource extraction endeavours haven't caused enough environmental harm, Canadian mining companies are meeting tough opposition abroad.

Last month, tens of thousands of Colombians from Bucaramanga took to the streets to protest Canadian gold and silver mining company Eco Oro Minerals Corp. The company plans to explore for gold and silver in an area which supplies the city with water and the residents are concerned.

There have been four demonstrations in the area since 2010, and this is by no means the only company nor the only country where this has happened. In January of 2012, Canadian gold mining company Osisko met with local resistance in Argentina by environmentalists.

Five years earlier, Barrick Gold, also Canadian, pulled out of the same mountain range following local pressure.

Last July there was a death and six injuries in Bolivia after Quechua inhabitants of an area slated for silver extraction clashed with police.

The Vancouver company, South American Silver Corp, had several of its workers illegally detained by members of the Malku Khota community. What the Malku Khota people did was wrong, but the incident underscores how sensitive these issues are environmentally, as well as how they affect indigenous communities. South American Silver Corp's project may have had the consent of the majority of the surrounding communities, but when we're talking about mining operations like this, peoples' lives and the environment should be top priority.

Canada likes to pride itself on its international reputation, but that reputation is fast decaying. One aspect of the dissolution stems from active decisions of our government such as pulling out of the Kyoto Accord, but another is the continued failure to hold the overseas operations of Canadian corporations accountable for their actions, particularly when it comes to mining. These incidents are just a slice of how our mining companies are being met abroad, and there's a harrowing lack of accountability on Canada's part.

The last attempt from government to do anything came from Liberal MP John McKay, who introduced the private member's bill "An Act Respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries" in 2009. These bills rarely become law, and this was no exception to the trend. The purpose was to make sure that companies operating abroad with the support of the Government of Canada adhered to international environmental best practices and human rights standards. The bill ultimately failed in 2010, 140 votes to 134.

MiningWatch Canada described this bill as the "best chance we have as Canadians to assure that Canadian extractive companies follow human rights and environmental best practices when they operate overseas."

Well, we didn't take that chance, and if the subsequent protests are an indication of anything, it's that legislation regarding mining is as necessary now as it was in 2009. V

he whole town of Jasper is getting ready to party this weekend when the fourth annual Jasper Pride Weekend (JPW) takes place from April 12 to 14.

"It helps that it's a small community," says JPW spokesperson Jörg Michel. "Everybody knows everybody and the support has been pretty amazing over the years."

In fact, the only pride party in the Rockies hosts many out-of-towners who travel to attend. Michel is happy about that and hopes the number will grow even larger this year from the few hundred who attended last year (that number is based on ticket sales for Saturday night's big dance party.) He says it's really easy to get to know people at JPW due to its smaller scale.

"The idea was there are big events in Calgary and Edmonton, but there are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two-spirited people in the countryside as well and they sometimes don't feel comfortable attending the big pride events in the cities," Michel explains. "Jasper Pride is more intimate. It's smaller. It's easier to connect to people. When you attend our events you're not lost. So that was basically the idea, to start something in a small com-

Fairy Tales Presentation Society from Calgary is attending for the first time and will be putting on a dinner theatre as well as previewing films from their upcoming Queer Film Festival. The Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association will be hosting a cowgirl-cowboy breakfast for the first time, too.

"Many of them live in the countryside, and for them it's not as easy to connect as it might be for people from the big cities," Michel adds.

The local high school's Gay-Straight Alliance will be another first, frying up pancakes in their pyjamas.

"The kids are 16 or 17, some of them have just come out to themselves, to their parents, to their teachers, but they feel encouraged by pride events like ours because there are people from all walks of life attending: countryside, city, old, young, colourful, not so colourful, serious, fun, everything," Michel says. "We do it for them as well and we are really happy to see that for the first time they are excited to be part of it."

And those are just the newbies. Saturday night's dance party is the highlight for many Pride-goers, as Michel points out.

"The Saturday night dance party, it was there right from the beginning and it draws huge crowds and some people say it's the best party in Jasper all year-long, and I'm sure they're right," he adds.

Who's afraid of the big, bad corporation?

f corporations are people, as some would say, then they're not the kind of people you'd want to fight; a corporation is big, faceless and prohibitively powerful.

But Public Interest Alberta (PIA) says the battle is worth it, fair fight be damned. PIA, a non-profit and non-partisan organization, is holding its seventh annual advocacy conference April 11 to 13, Fighting for our Future: People Power vs Corporate Control. Speakers are coming from the United States, Canada and India, including a keynote panel on Thursday evening featuring Beaver Lake Cree Nation oil-sands activist Crystal Lameman, award-winning journalist and author Linda McQuaig and Amazon Watch's Gregor MacLennan.

PIA's executive director Bill Moore-Kilgannon says the annual conference has always focused on people power—the power of ordinary folks to tackle Alberta's problems. He says the 2013 conference is meant to show Albertans that they can push back against big business's oversized influence.

"We're seeing more and more power to large corporations—this can lead to privatization of health care, massive cuts to public services and, like we are seeing, cuts to postsecondary education," Moore-Kilgannon says. "We're bringing in speakers to inspire people, to remind them that we live in a democracy and that we can advocate for change."

Toronto author and journalist Linda McQuaig—her latest book being The Trouble with Billionaires—says the one percent are getting richer at the expense of ordinary folks, and points to Alberta's austerity budget as an example of what happens when the wealthiest citizens and corporations influence the ruling government. Alberta, what with the oil sands being developed at a feverish pace, should be awash in cash—not slashing university budgets and battling to pay teachers, nurses and doctors as little as possible.

"That money is going to private industry," McQuaig says of the petro-dollars.

The problem? She says Alberta collects an embarrassingly low royalty rate from oil development, lower than Angola and much lower than Norway's. And the oil industry exerts considerable pressure to keep it that way.

"There's an extremely powerful vested interest that blocks any attempt at reform," she says.

The author says that the wealthy, and their proxy in government, are ideologically opposed to a powerful tool that would help Alberta out of their deficit hole: tax reform. McQuaig says changes to Canada's tax structures in the early '80s have overwhelmingly benefitted the rich. Statistics Canada says the income of the top .01 percent has quintupled in the last three decades, while wages for the middle class have stagnated and actually decreased for the lowest earners.

Fellow conference speaker Dennis Howlett agrees. Howlett, executive director for Ottawa-based Canadians for Tax Fairness, will be joining Parkland Institute researcher Diana Gibson to talk about "tax cuts, greed and the corporate agenda."

Howlett says tax cuts—like Alberta's 10 percent flat income tax—do more to help the rich and actually harm ordinary citizens and society as a whole. He argues that a pro-

gressive tax, where higher earners pay a higher rate, would help solve income inequality and contribute to better social programs.

"Canada and Alberta had good, progressive taxes," Howlett says on the phone from Ottawa. "But we saw that disappear in the last 10 to 20 years. Now we're seeing cuts to programs and growing income inequality. That income gap hurts economy; ordinary Canadians have less and less money to spend and wealthier folks are more likely to just put their savings in the bank."

The idea of raising taxes, even for the rich, sounds provocative. But it's provocative because we've been conditioned for years to consider taxes as the devil. That, says conference speaker Wendell Potter, is a testament to the power of profit-driven propaganda. And Potter knows that power first-hand.

As a senior executive in the American health-insurance industry, he has an intimate understanding of how a business will put money over anything else—including the lives of tens of millions of people. But he switched from insider to whistle-blower, famously testifying against the health-insurance industry in front of the US Senate in 2009. He's since written a book on the experience, Deadly Spin, and blogs regularly on the US health-insurance industry's deceptions.

He says insurance companies spend tens and hundreds of millions of dollars on propaganda and to lobby politicians. While 50 million Americans have no health insurance—because their illnesses are pre-existing conditions and disqualify them from coverage or they simply can't afford the premiums—the health insurance industry was promoting US health care as the best in the world. The US ranks 47th globally in life expectancy, behind Bosnia, and 54th in health-care fairness, worse than Bangladesh.

"It's incredible how much influence these corporations have," Potter says on the phone from Philadelphia. "They have campaigns with their allies in business and politics, which is basically fear-mongering, meant to scare people away from any reform. They manage public opinion and put out distorted information, like saying Canadians have to ration out health care or wait months or years for medically necessary care."

He strongly warns against letting even the tiniest whiff of privatized health care waft into Alberta. He calls it a "slippery slope" towards the American system, where corporations have enormous influence on politics and public opinion through propaganda campaigns.

"The system creates unequal access to care," Potter says.

McQuaig, Howlett and Potter will be joined by a dozen more speakers, including Afsar Jafri, who will speak about control of agriculture in his native India; Sean Devlin, creator of the bitingly satirical Shit Harper Did website (shd.ca); and Kevin Millsip, co-founder and director of youth leadership program Next Up. PIA's MooreKilgannon encourages people to see Thursday's keynote panel with McQuaig, Lameman, MacLennan and a video link with Peruvian indigenous leader Peas Peas Ayui.

This is a big part of the reason that the Alberta government is more dependent on volatile oil and gas revenues today than it was when Ralph Klein took office.

Then, as the price of oil was really starting to take off and money flowed back into provincial coffers, Klein made the decision that Alberta should become the first jurisdiction in North America to introduce a single-rate tax structure, resulting in a huge tax break for the province's wealthy and corporations, higher taxes for those on the bottom and the middle of the income scale, and forgoing close to $2 bil-

At the same time, Klein did even further damage to the province's revenue stream when he slashed royalty rates and introduced the one-percent royalty rate for Alberta bitumen projects. Although Conservatives often claimed that this is what spurred growth in investment in the late '90s, the reality is that rapidly increasing oil prices would have spurred that investment re-

At the same time as most Albertans were paying more in taxes than folks in other provinces, they were also paying more for electricity as a result of Klein's decision to deregulate pricing of those utilities and more for services, like registries, that Klein had privatized. These policies are responsible for the fact that today Alberta has the greatest

In the end, the real legacy of Klein's tenure as premier is not one of general prosperity, economic growth and general well-being. He was a premier who was fortunate to be leader during a period of increasing oil and gas prices and who did not have to face the consequences of his policies once the price of oil crashed in 2008. Klein's true legacy is today's growing deficit, our ridiculous over-dependence on oil and gas, an incredibly volatile government revenue stream, overcrowded classrooms and emergency rooms, crumbling infrastructure, a Heritage Fund that has not grown in over 20 years, and a rapidly growing gap between rich and poor in the province.

Yes, there is no doubt that this is a difficult time for his friends and family, and our thoughts and condolences should go out to them. At the same time, however, ignoring the legacy of Ralph Klein's policies and government to the well-being of our province would be dangerous and irresponsible. We can't move forward if we sugarcoat the mistakes that got us here. The powerful middle class on which she founded her political strategy has been hollowed out by the very success of the freemarket policies she promoted. Once you allow for the effects of inflation, average middle class income in the United States, for example, has not grown at all in the past three decades.

PINING TO BE A CLASSIC The Place Beyond the Pines falters in its ambitions Opens Friday Directed by Derek Cianfrance Three stars

T

he title of Derek Cianfrance's new film is a translation of Schenectady, a Mohawk term, and the name of the city in eastern New York state where this 140-minute tripartite crime drama unfolds. So even in his choice of title, Cianfrance is working to invoke a large historical canvas. The Place Beyond the Pines has a chronology that begins in the '80s. Its style, atmospheres and themes draw upon certain tendencies in American movies of both the '40s and the '70s. Its multiple protagonists span generations, racial backgrounds and class.

Its setting feels indifferent to the 21st century. The film is ambitious, and its ambitions, its largely blue-collar milieu and Cianfrance's obvious craftmanship are the elements I admire most. But, like Cianfrance's Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines overreaches in a way that, perhaps, betrays its author's naïveté. Emotions burgeon and spill over, and as they spill over they feel less genuine, less invested with real experience.

In the first section, stunt biker "Handsome" Luke (Ryan Gosling, very compelling), a sort of poor man's Evel Knievel, sloppily dressed, beach-bumbottle-blonde and covered in tats, turns up with a travelling carnival in Schenectady, where a year earlier he'd had a fling with Romina, a local waitress (Eva Mendes, mostly stuck playing an exhausted victim). Luke learns that that fling resulted in progeny, and his cool, cool heart begins to ache. He quits the carnival and determines to be a dad to

little Jason and a partner to Romina— despite the fact that she's got a boyfriend, who seems very nice and a good provider.

Luke meets Robin, a backwoods mechanic and occasional bank-robber, played by Ben Mendelsohn, a very good actor from Australia, and one to watch out for; he was last seen looking even greasier in Killing Me Softly. Robin is the film's most interesting character, partly because, unlike most of the other characters, his intentions aren't overstated.

(Robin nevertheless has the film's most thudding line: "If you ride like lightning, you're gonna crash like thunder.") One suspects that lonesome Robin's in love with Luke. He gives him a bed, a job and what turns out to be a really bad idea: You need money to win that family of yours, don't you? Let's utilize your bike skills and rob a few banks. Complications ensue.

the preceding 105 minutes awkward but absorbing. Forced plot mechanics take hold. The film meanders toward a resolution that feels flimsier with every climax.

Cianfrance is not lacking for audiovisual fluency. He's good with portentous dissolves, very good at weaving evocative stray images together under the longer speeches. But, somewhere in the grand scheming, his judgment with regards to emotional verisimilitude and narrative concision seems to falter. He may have it in him to make a truly great movie— there are stunning, even heartbreaking moments in both this and Valentine— but in order to achieve this he may have to stop trying so damned hard to make a Truly Great Movie.

The second section follows Avery (Bradley Cooper), a rookie cop and son to a former state supreme court judge.

Avery's whole life changes in the time it takes to pull a trigger. It changes even more in the time it takes him to not refuse a bribe from a coven of corrupt cops helmed by Ray Liotta, our go-to guy for intimidating slime (see, once again, Killing Me Softly). Like Luke, Avery's got a little boy, and when The Place Beyond the Pines enters its home stretch Luke and Avery's boys will emerge to fill the narrative foreground, where they're visited by the sins of their fathers, et cetera, et cetera. This final section loses much of the character development and attention to place that helped make

f I had a dollar for every time I've overheard someone saying, "That was depressing," as credits roll, I'd have enough to open my own secret British Virgin Islands bank account.

But, on the other side of the ledger, should films emphasize love and hope, going out on a high note to make you feel uplifted?

The Edmonton Film Society complicates that question, and your postmovie reaction, with its spring series "From Courage to Inspiration." There is, for instance, Dickens' novel of dop-

pelgangers, French revolution and the guillotine, slanting its ominous shadow over a sharpened love triangle.

(For a happy-ending romance, see the Cary Grant-Deborah Kerr 1957 picture An Affair to Remember, kicking off the series April 15.) The 1935 MGM adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities (May 6), starring Ronald Colman, builds to that fateful moment when the blade rests high above Carton's head. As it rushes down, much of the film's uplift may rest on your response to those famous last words—"It's a far, far greater rest that I go to than I have ever known."

And Hollywood's long claimed that teachers' words should inspire and enlighten—witness, then, the curious case of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969; June 10), an adaptation of Muriel Spark's novel starring Maggie Smith as the imperious, fascistleaning schoolteacher.

Words set to music seem surer to close with a sweet swell. With A Song in My Heart (April 29) is a 1952 bio of actress-singer Jane Froman (with Froman dubbing in Susan Hayward's singing voice), while The Five Pennies (May 27) is a 1959 bio of cornet-playing bandleader Red Nichols (with great trumpeter Louis Armstrong, too).

But perhaps it's just magisterial movies transcending their source material that prove most inspiring. Random Harvest (1942; June 3) grew out of the book about an amnesiac falling for a showgirl. Better yet, Douglas Sirk turned a minister's didactic novel into

one fine melodrama, Magnificent Obsession (1954; May 13) ... which could just as well describe we cinephiles' affair to remember with the silver screen.

T

here is a kind of film that appeals to our need for the familiar and the established, for orientation, continuity and context. Abbas Kiarostami makes the other kind of film.

Each of his films greets us with the exhilaration and unease of a blind date. They presume a willingness on our part to enter into story without knowing where, or even how, we're going to proceed. Things like truth and authenticity are treated with a healthy skepticism. Relationships between characters are often ambiguous; sometimes they remain that way even after the film has ended. We are thrown off-balance, beguiled, yet not abandoned. Something is always happening. Every moment offers a glimmer. Kiarostami's narratives rarely seem to be deliberately withholding anything; rather, they favour discovery over exposition. In its idiosyncratic way, Kiarostami's storytelling is actually relatively straightforward—it's story itself that never seems to follow a straight path.

Following ABC Africa (2001) and Certified Copy (2010), Like Someone

in Love, a Franco-Japanese co-production, is Kiarostami's third film made outside his native Iran. Its setting and characters—and, perhaps, something of its sensibility—are Japanese. (It isn't hard to imagine a reverence for the Japanese maestro Yasujirō Ozu's films imbuing Kiarostami's conceptualization.) A very young woman (Rin Takanashi) arrives at the home of an elderly man (Tadashi Okuno). She's a student; he's a scholar. He's made dinner for the two of them. Is he to be her tutor? Maybe she's his granddaughter, a presumption other characters in the film will make? No. Your first guess, or suspicion, will likely be that a particular breed of financial transaction is taking place, and you'd be guessing right. But nothing about the way these two interact corresponds with the movies' usual signifiers of a sex worker/client relationship. I'm fairly certain that the old man doesn't even want sex. An unusual bond is forged between these two and, in keeping with the title—borrowed from the torch song so famously and gorgeously rendered by Ella Fitzgerald—we might even call this a love story of a kind.

spaces: an apartment, a car. Takashi, the old man, gives Akiko, the young woman, a lift. They meet Noriaki (Ryō Kase), Akiko's boyfriend, who seems to have some serious anger management issues and wants to marry Akiko so as to keep tabs on her, yet who also seems eager to make a good impression on Takashi; he runs a garage

and insists on taking care of Takashi's belt-drive problem. A fourth person, a busybody neighbour of Takashi's, rounds out this cast of characters who form a circuit of individual lives brushing against one another without necessarily making contact in any meaningful way. Among the film's themes is one of the oldest in drama:

the inability of people to really listen to each other. Sometimes in Kiarostami's films the audience can feel a little left in the dark; in the case of Like Someone in Love, we wind up feeling like we can see things the people on screen can't.

overing the proposed razing of city blocks for the building of an arena and surrounding skyscrapers, Battle for Brooklyn is a smartly constructed documentary that gets in on a multi-layered story at the ground floor. It follows Daniel Goldstein, a graphic designer at 636 Pacific Street, who's at the stubborn heart of the fight to keep the Atlantic Yards project, with its planned New Jersey Nets arena, from being built where there are existing apartments and businesses. In an early scene, Goldstein tries a Michael Moore approach, saying the development, by rich powers-that-be (led by billion-dollar company Forest City Ratner), is "un-American." But

then he shrugs, correcting himself: "It seems to be the American way."

Those powers' empty rah-rah (sports-fan-like) boosterism of the project—one top backer talks of his dismay at the Dodgers leaving for LA in 1957—is reminiscent of the bankrupt Reagan-era attitude that Moore showed in Roger and Me. But this conflict, which directors Galinsky and Hawley started filming, sharply and tensely, in 2003, also looks ahead to Occupy Wall Street, with its anger over the yawning abyss between blue-collar folks and CEOs. (Like a lot of good docs, this one gets lucky, too. In Goldstein, the directors found an articulate activist—well-aware of his class and whiteness—whose home life, as it becomes more and more entangled in and defined by the seven-year fight by the "Develop—Don't Destroy" group, makes him even more sympathetic a protagonist.)

As myopic media reports, apartment owner-buyouts and token nods to notions of neighbourhood from developers' representatives pile up, "community" itself becomes a shifty, sneaky word. And, as citizens' groups face off over alternate construction plans, whether or not there will be local jobs, and benefits outweighing costs, "proud of Brooklyn" becomes a sharply dividing emotion. Decisions are rerouted around all elected officials as Daniel continues to fight Goliath ... but the system seems rigged.

Battle for Brooklyn earns its epicsounding title, building, block by block, a sturdy, gritty little film about the impassioned fight to ensure that development's directed by the local people and for the local people, not by a few overlords above all.

veryone's a critic. Which is good, because the filmmakers presenting their works at Metro Shorts are looking for exactly the kind of honest criticism you just can't get by asking your friends and family what they think.

"What it offers artists is that you get instant feedback," explains Trent Wilkie, who co-produces the evening of short film on behalf of Mostly Water Theatre. "And that's one of the hardest things for an artist, because if you put up your own gallery show everyone is going to come to it and say, 'Oh, you're the greatest.'"

With experienced filmmakers judging the videos—giving the artists pointers and advice—and the crowd there to vote for their favourites, the filmmakers are awash in an ocean of feedback. But in a constructive way.

"It's not really adjudicated like American Idol, it's adjudicated to help the filmmakers," Wilkie explains, adding the night will feature 10 films in a variety of styles.

The constraints of short film challenge artists to sharpen their sto-

rytelling abilities. At Metro Shorts each piece must be under five minutes, which doesn't leave any room for indulgences.

"Editing is 9/10th of good art," Wilkie says. "With longer films, I'm sure you've sat through some of them and you'd wish they had been shorter. With these, it shows someone getting to the point of their idea, being succinct and using what they have around them. They don't have big budgets but they have big ideas and that doesn't mean they can't get that idea out in five minutes."

With five screenings over the course of the year, filmmakers are expected to enter new works in each show—hopefully developing as they go. And while there's a small prize for the winner to take home, it's the learning experience that's of real value to these artists.

"It teaches you to have a thick skin, but it also teaches you to be dedicated to what you do," Wilkie says.

"I've seen somebody place last and then at the next screening, win it all. They took the information, they applied it and they made their idea better. It's all part of learning to be a better filmmaker and a better artist."

titillating but fun, without being lecherous towards its characters.

To say the movie is of its era would be understatement—Strawberry Alarm Clock plays a house party, man—but the more curious cinematic elements mostly dwell on jumbled plot, and just how fast tone wanders (very fast). Meyer apparently refused to tell actors if they were to deliver their lines with seriousness or comedy, and it shows: I doubt you'll ever hear a line like, "You will drink the black sperm of my vengeance" uttered ever again, especially not with a straight face (that was from Z man, by the way).

It ends in a sort of Rocky Horror floor show gone wrong, scenes of which were been teased during the film's opening credits. Someone gets decapitated, a jarring left turn for the movie, but then again, at that point there's someone wandering around dressed as a Nazi, so ... why not? That seems as much of the film's rallying cry as anything.

Reflecting on his own film for Film Comment magazine in 1980, Ebert noted it to be, among other things, "pure movie without message." Fair point: it's weird and wacky, and bizarrely jumbled in its execution. But somehow Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is a compelling, bizarre, kinda fun puzzle to watch, even if the pieces don't fit together into anything particularly sensible. V

enelope first emerges through a shroud of fog, an image befitting her place in mythology. "Now that I'm dead," she begins. " I know everything."

The heroine recants on that boast almost immediately—the ancient Greek afterlife is a far glibber, you-can-stillstub-your-toe affair than the pearly gates of today's imaginings—but the tale she proceeds to deliver does answer a question that's largely gone unasked of its founding myth before: why Odysseus, on his return after 20 years of war and peril, slayed not just Penelope's would-be suitors but also 12 of her personal maids?

In The Penelopiad, Margaret Atwood's re-examination of The Odyssey (originally as a novel, then adapted for stage by the author herself), done here by the Citadel, the answer seems like a criticism of myth itself: that those daring tales of masculine heroics refuse to acknowledge the very-human costs of myth-making, the brutality inflicted on loved ones as well as the everyday folk who got on the wrong side of legend (for starters: the pillage and enslavement of Troy's innocents after the war).

Here, those ideas spool out in a Greek memory play that, at its best, delivers those ideas with a sparse, spartan focus.

There is, however, a novel's worth of words to battle through. Atwood's writing is as sharp as you might expect, but she leans heavily on text, favouring exposition over more dramatic, engaging action: a bulk of the play is Penelope narrating her way through the life (her youth, the surprisingly endearing wedding night with Odysseus, the Trojan War, waiting a decade for her absentee husband to reshow while fending off suitors). That heavy-text basis lends the show—the first act in particular—a strange disconnect. It takes time to warm up to, and, even then, the ensemble/choral style feels a little out of place in a modern context. Maybe groupspeak just doesn't lend the same sort of satisfaction it was once capable of providing.

Still, in terms of a leading lady to act as Atlas and shoulder all that text, Beth Graham delivers as much magnetisim as one could pull from that.

Her weariness with the lasting wait for her husband never transfers to the audience: instead, we get an intelligent performance, grounded and restrained in its regretful look at the

cruelties of the fates.

The rest of the cast, too, carries weight: fresh from the Citadel's Banff Professional Theatre Program—effectively a five-week masterclass retreat in acting together—they have strength as an ensemble. Those who get meatier roles stand out—Mary Hulbert's narcissistic Helen (of Troy), Lisa Norton's persuasive Odysseus, Claire Hesselgrave's Telemachus— but you get the sense that everyone's working on a pretty high level here.

The Bretta Gerecke stage design is sparse but inventive: its background, a scatter of intersecting poles, looks like Threads of Life awaiting the Fates sisters' cruel scissors, while sheets of cloth and threads of string become tables, arrows and tapestries in simple, effective ways.

If there's a lingering inertness to the first act, the second plays out with more intrigue, as a growing sense of a cruel inevitability increases its effectiveness. With its climax, The Odyssey, one of mythology's enduring tales of triumph, quietly realigns itself into a Greek tragedy, one of misplaced faith and human error. And even now, looking back in the afterlife, Penelope can't escape the misplaced ideals she stuck to when in the land of the living.

o call Dust a love story would be a gross oversimplification; there are many facets to the deeply disturbing relationship on display in the third production of Northern Light Theatre's current season.

Jason Maghanoy's script takes the classic boy-meets-girl trope and turns it on its head, setting the story in the infamous Abu Ghraib prison during the Iraq War. The female half of the story is based on Lynndie England, the sadistic American soldier who was heavily involved in the torture and abuse of Iraqi prisoners, much of which was captured on film in a series of now-famous photographs.

Director Trevor Schmidt has taken the script's themes of voyeurism and compulsive documentation and manifested them on stage by way of large mirrors across the back wall, reflecting an oft-uncomfortable audience.

Above this is a projection of images cleverly synchronized with the camera used by the actors; as they snap a new picture or scroll through previous ones the projections change accordingly. It's a brilliant theatrical device that plays out like a twisted Instagram feed, neatly expanding the setting and presenting the crux of the story's conflict.

Swaggering and self-possessed, the character of Jenny (Monice Peter) arrives in the prison and quickly chooses a prison guard, Jonathan (Paul Sutherland), as her mate. Initially speaking passionately of how they must create home no matter the setting, the focus of Jenny's fervour quickly changes from organizing theme nights for the soldiers to spending an increasing amount of time in the cell blocks, where her penchant for violence is made evident as Jonathan scrolls through the recent images on her camera. "I don't want to see my face on CNN," cautions Jonathan, a sentiment which Jenny violently dismisses by arguing their entitlement to carry out such acts. "I came here to fight monsters," she counters, a concise explanation as any of why wartime atrocities continue to occur.

Dust is a short play, with spare lines of dialogue punctuated by long moments of silence. Feeling uncomfortable during these suspended moments is precisely the point, and both actors demonstrate a masterful ability to convey the pathos of their characters without uttering a word.

The audience is given neither resolution nor reassurance when the play ends; indeed, the story feels fundamentally incomplete until one stops to consider that there actually is an ending to this story, and we already know it—because we saw it on CNN. MEL PRIESTLEY

he events of the Second World War have long since past, but remain far from forgotten.

Burning Vision, written by Marie Clements, returns to this pivotal place in history, but spins a very different tale than audiences have become accustomed to hearing. With a time frame that spans 70 years of history, Clements offers a metaphysical production that brings together characters who transcend time and space, highlighting the effects of uranium—personified by cast members—from the soil of Northern British Columbia to the United States, where it ultimately ended up in the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

"I think it's a story that not a lot

of Canadians know, the fact that we were so involved with the making of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima. Not all of the uranium that came out of Great Bear Lake in Northern BC is what's in those bombs, but I mean, all of it is the same thing: going to test the atom bombs down in Nevada, the fact that Canada had such an involvement and it's not something that's taught in our schools," explains director Sarah Van Tassel.

"It's not something that we're really aware of: our involvement and what we did to our own people, let alone a part of what we did in the war overall."

The story has been a rewarding challenge for Van Tassel, who has always been drawn to war stories, particularly ones that connect on a personal level. She notes that she is a big believer in learning from our

mistakes, which is why it is important to continue revisiting periods in history such as this.

"If we don't connect to the personal stories of war, then it's harder to learn from them ... it's easier to look at a number and close yourself off from that, but when you connect to a personal story then it's so much easier to feel empathy and therefore learn from it," she says, noting the characters of Little Boy and Fat Man—personified versions of the uranium given the code names of the atomic bombs—as examples of this, as well as characters that bring out another dimension in the story for consideration. "We're responsible for what we do with the Earth, and we really know what we're doing with our environment as well as with each other and we need to think of the consequences of our actions."

t's like getting back into those perfect running shoes that you've always had and cherish when spring or summer comes back."

It's a comparison actor Pierre Antoine Lafon Simard fondly draws when speaking of returning to his role as Émile, the male role in Écume, a love story in which the fantastical collides with reality, adding a mythical twist to the tried-andtrue boy-meets-girl premise.

Since Écume began touring in 2007, Simard has revisited the role of Émile, a 27-year-old biochemist

whose life is turned upside down when he meets a young woman at a local pool. He falls in love with her and soon learns she is a mermaid.

The couple's love story—which results in them becoming parents very early on—leads them on a journey through another dimension where life and death have no boundary.

The production is a physically demanding one, Simard notes, but it's a story that has been able to grow with him personally and professionally as he navigates changing conceptions of love and relationships in his own life—one of many reasons that's kept him coming back to the role time and time again.

"I can go back to that text and go, 'This feels different now because I, as an actor, I'm enriched by some-

Écume presents very a different take on the traditional love story, and Simard admits it's an unusual one, but the fantastical and oneiric elements allow for the usual drama surrounding romantic productions to give way to new perceptions and ideas.

"Using fiction in such a blunt and poetic way really allows you to wander in psychological waters or ask questions that you can't really touch without being exaggerated or too big if you were constrained by realism," he says of the recent widespread fascination with regular mortals falling for the mythical or supernatural. "I think something there must touch people.

I can really understand why, because the best stories in the world we stole from the Greeks. We didn't invent anything and the story of boy-meets-girl, they have a child, is still very touching and intriguing. But bringing that twist is what's so refreshing and fun and it's it out from all the clichés."

t's time for Citie Ballet's first season as Edmonton's resident professional ballet company to come to a close, a dream come true for artistic director François Chevennement.

"When I took over Citie Ballet six years ago it was an amateur company, and I always pushed and fought to get the company at a professional level, and we finally made that leap last summer," he says during a break from a busy week of rehearsals leading up to the company's season-finale production, Ariadne's Gate.

"I do believe there is room for Citie Ballet to be a live performing company. I believe it's also helped studio owners and students in the city, and around the city, to have some sort of goal ... I think it is of great importance to the city to get a home company to help all of the people who like to dance, to work for something that is reachable."

Chevennement is already well ahead of schedule, with preparations for the next two seasons underway (next season's lineup will be announced following the performance of Ariadne's Gate). Citie Ballet will continue to offer a mixed program for its audiences, including classical ballet numbers as well as productions that bring to-

gether ostensibly opposite styles, much like Barroco Beat in its Mosaic series, which fused Japanese drums with ballet and modern dance. And of course, there will be story ballet, which is the category Ariadne's Gate falls into.

With the help of noted playwright and librettist Katherine Koller, the traditional Greek myth—set to the music of Tchaikovsky—has been remounted especially for Citie Ballet's six-member cast, offering an original twist on the story of Theseus and the Minotaur's labyrinth, which he navigates with the help of a spool of thread given to him by Ariadne.

"When I was a kid I used to study ancient Greece at school, and I really loved all the mythology," Chevennement says, noting the audience is in for a bit of a surprise when it comes to the story's ending. "The only thing I could say is that it's a pretty dramatic ending. It's not the happy ending in the mythology."

It's a story of desire, promise and betrayal that must be told strictly through movement, which Chevennement adds

was a challenge for his cast, but one he feels they're up for. At the beginning of the season, none of the dancers knew one another, but the chemistry between them has matured with each production.

"This first season was a little hard because when we started the season none of the dancers knew me; they didn't know each other," he says. "It wasn't a slow process I would say, but it takes time for a dancer to have confidence in themselves, in myself and between them.

We'll have five returning dancers next season and one new dancer, so we will have a group of dancers who know each other, who know us—myself and my wife (co-artistic director Laurence MenottiChevennement)—so I believe we will be able to achieve even a little bit more."

A

common measure of the authenticity of a particular ethnic eatery is the proportion of patrons who appear to hail from the region whose cuisine is represented therein. Though the forbidding weather seemed to have discouraged Zembaba's potential patrons, save a few intrepid regulars, the owner/operators of the little Ethiopian nook directly across the street from Tony's Pizza seemed a bit taken aback by nonEthiopians settling into their midst for a late, late-winter meal.

After numerous short-lived, atmospherically ersatz incarnations, the present regime have made Zembaba a cozy, clean yellow inside, with tasteful—though certainly not fancy—Ethiopian-themed art, a white brick bar and subterranean bathrooms that, at the end of their operating day, were just this side of hygienic. The occasionally overloud music wove its way through someone's iTunes, churning up slinky, psychedelic Ethiopian jazz, somber classical piano and sax-smeared sonic wallpaper in the space of a few songs.

If you're allergic to typos and misspellings, there's no doubt Zembaba Restorant's (sic) menu would cause your tongue to swell up and choke you to death. Better to just ask what you should try if there's any risk or, easier yet, order the combination platters that let you sample widely.

ers around the $15 mark and is designed for sharing, so make sure to take some pals along. My pals more or less agreed on some lamb stew, dullet, Roman's special cha cha tibbs and a veggie combo.

After we placed our order with our server, our cook came out of the kitchen to review our choices and suggest an alternative to the dullet, which she told us was very good, but perhaps not for the uninitiated, as it is made with the stomach of a lamb.

We might, she offered, want to save that for the second visit. Instead she talked us into, against my friend's protests that he would not touch it, the "award-winning" kitfo. The exchange was just confusing enough that we forgot to ask which awards it had won.

The main thing you're going to eat during your Ethiopian meal is bread or, rather, injera, a spongy, fermented flapjack made with an iron-rich grain called teff. Injera serves as plate, utensil and staff of life, arriving rolled in sections on a platter like fresh hand towels at an Ethiopian spa. Its mild, pleasant flavour and absorbency recommend it to the task of scooping up the heaps and puddles of stewed vegetables and bony meats.

You'll also get a helping of niter kibbeh and berbere, the spiced clarified butter and chili pepper-based spice blend that permeate an Ethiopian repast. They're the reason you'll taste cumin, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and garlic as you shovel

back stew-stuffed bundles of injera and meat, unsure of which flavours are coming from what dish. Fortunately, they all fit together quite nicely, enlivened by a lot of textures.

I'd go so far as to say that the selection provided verged on too broad.

The big, injera-lined platter set between us was a sundial of different coloured ladlefuls of various vegetables and pulses ranging from the indelible purple of diced beets through the olive drab of green beans to three or four shades of lentil stew and turmeric-stained dunes of simmered cabbage, cauliflower with bell pepper and potato, all arranged around a mound of kitfo. Much as I enjoy variety, I would have preferred if they stuck to, oh, four or five veggie sides and provided just a bit more of each. That's just my preference.

Because I really love the stewed cabbage with carrots, and there just wasn't that much for four people.

My previous experience of kitfo has been that it's like steak tartar, a dense portion of minced nigh-raw beef charged up with garlic and spices. One of my co-diners, who had tangled with just such a kitfo and lost at one point in his life, was prepared to concede "award-winning" to this version of kitfo because it appeared to be cooked, mixed up with medium spices, finely chopped spinach and an Ethiopian cottage cheese-type dairy product. We all agreed this was a good way to make kitfo, and its complex seasoning meshed seamlessly with the multi-hued heaps around it.

lamb stew in a richly spiced gravy— from a small iron kettle into discreet pools on the section of injera in front of each diner. I thought this one was the most injera-friendly of the foodstuffs provided, what with the hearty gravy to sop up, but I kept that to myself in such pro-kitfo company.

Roman's special cha cha tibs was a heaping, sizzling platter of roasted beef on the bone, its dry, crisp surface a veneer for the succulent, lubricious interior.

The cook came out again to see how we had liked everything, and my co-diner pledged he was coming back to try the dullet. She said she'd be happy to make it for him.

Likewise, we'd be back another time to observe the ritual preparation of Ethiopian coffee. The music seemed to get louder and more random, ushering us out into the unbelievablystill-winter night with a little African warmth contained in our well-filled bellies.

A band chasing Beefheart's ghost

oots music is a genre that's tricky to separate from its traditions, chiefly because it leans on them by design: arrangements vary, but there's a pretty set wheelhouse of sounds and structure at play in the genre. Sure, fine, but seeing Calgary's Ghostkeeper lumped in with the genre (or, stranger still, blues) is beguiling at best: the band's kinetic, fragmented approach to music is anything but a well-trod path. The band lets its songs turn on a bank vault's worth of dimes: sly, grooving blasts of minimalist pop dive into rhythmic breakdowns, electronic blip-scapes and ominous, atmospheric drifts, often all within the confines of the same track. Ghostkeeper is more Beefheart than Mumford, yet the band usually gets roped in with the latter.

"It's just as surprising to me," Shane Ghostkeeper shrugs, on a break from his arborist dayjob.

"I mean, there's definitely some roots influence," he continues," but I wouldn't even call that the majority of our influence. I mean, we take sounds from all different past genres, and we try to be as less derivative as possible, but it's definitely deriving from straight-up rock 'n' roll, psychedelia, even hip hop, drone, metal."

For Horse Chief! War Thief!, the band's third album—which confidently heightens the sonic weirdness it's dabbled in before—Ghostkeeper abandoned this province for a month on the east coast: 30 days spent recording in The Old Confidence Lodge studio (Riverport, Nova Scotia). The appeal of the trek was partly the studio's two-inch tape machine, Shane notes, and partly the freedom to explore that comes with an isolated atmosphere.

"We really wanted to be a lot more progressive and challenging, arrangement-wise and tone-wise and production-wise," he says. "I think they have 13-foot ceilings, or something like that, so we were able to string mics up, rig mics up on the ceiling. Big open space. Diego [Medina, studio owner] gave us a pretty good deal, I think. And just taking off, getting away from our usual space, isolating ourselves without having any distractions. The romance of it all.

"It definitely allows you to submerse a lot more," he continues, "and it definitely has a lot more psychological impact, I think, as far as diving as deep as you can into the music and into the adventure of the music, and the fact that we were taking some serious risks. Maybe we were alienating our old fans, and alienating new fans," he laughs. "Just really indulging can be really smashing on the ego, I guess."

Lauren Mann covers Land & Sea with her Fairly Odd Folk Sat, Apr 13 (9 pm) Lauren Mann & the Fairly Odd Folk With Billie Zizi, Oliver Buck Bohemia, $8 At the end of 2010, Lauren Mann decided to pursue music as a full-time endeavour. Since then, she and her band, the Fairly Odd Folk, have crisscrossed North America and are now back on the road for a 48-date tour in support of the album Over Land and Sea. Before the band's stop in Edmonton, Mann shared a little more about the album with Vue. How long did it take to make Over Land and Sea from the initial songwriting through to the end of the recording?

LAUREN MANN: I started writing Over Land and Sea (officially) in September 2010, and we recorded the album in April and May 2011. Altogether it took about eight months.

VUE WEEKLY:

When you were writing the songs, did you come at them in a particular way? Lyrics first? Music first?

LM: It really depends. Some songs start with a lyric that I try and expand upon and fit music to, and sometimes it's a musical part that I start with—sometimes both. Usually if I'm stumped I'll just start playing piano and see what happens, so I guess the music ultimately comes first.

VW:

VW: What prompted your decision to return to music?

LM: I had stopped playing piano for a little while because of a number of big changes going on (getting married, moving away from home, switching jobs) and when I started playing again, one of the first songs I worked on was a song I had written about travelling and feeling at home in many places. It kind of awakened the dreams I had of travelling and playing music, and with the help of my husband, we made it happen.

VW:

What were the recording ses-

sions like for this album? Is this the kind of thing you recorded live or did you piece it together one track at a time? Why? LM: When we went into the studio, all I had were piano and vocal demo tracks and a few ideas of other parts and instrumentation. We focused on one track at a time, and really built them from the ground up using piano, vocals and drums as a base, and then adding whatever instrumentation we felt like. It was a really good introduction to the recording process and just what can happen to a song. I think in the future, now that we have a full band that we tour with, we'd love to record live and see what can happen with that.

VW: Were there any other songs written that were left off the album?

LM: By the time we got to the studio, I pretty much knew which songs were going to be on the album and I had a few extra songs, just in case. There was one song I had written, and spent much time agonizing over, that was left out after much debate. It was replaced by a song I wrote while in the studio, and some people still think it should have been left on the album.

I'm happy with how it all turned out, though.

VW: How did you decide which songs to include on the album? Did you have an idea of what you wanted Over Land and Sea to be when you started, or did the finished shape emerge as the writing and recording went along?

LM: During the writing process, I had a general theme in the back of my mind that helped guide a lot of the songs and determine the track listing.

I wanted to have the album be a sort of collection of stories about a journey and all the different experiences that can be had. So the songs are all about different life experiences, and travelling and seeing new places and all the emotions that go along with that. I think the theme of a journey

is really reflected in the album musically as well, because each song is very unique and has its own sound, but they all have instruments and elements that tie them all together.

VW: You worked with Aaron Marsh to produce the album. What drew you to him and what did he bring to the process?

LM: Aaron has been a huge musical inspiration to me for a long time with his work in the band Copeland, so when we found out that he had started producing full time, we thought why not see if we could work with him. He was a perfect fit for the album and really brought the songs to life with the string arrangements and instrumentation ideas. He had a big hand in how the songs were formed, which was nice for me because I didn't really know what I was getting into, and I didn't realize what was possible.

dancer before a piano player. When I was about 14, my parents made me decide between the two because I couldn't keep doing both as seriously as I needed to (and it was probably way too expensive!). For some reason, I picked music, and when I got weary of the classical regimen, I took jazz training and then really started to branch out with my writing. I would listen to bands like Coldplay, Copeland, Keane and any other piano rock band, and mimic

the piano parts and find new styles of playing. On Over Land and Sea, I drew on all my past inspiration, and added a few classical elements to some of the songs. I really dug deep while writing the album lyrically and musically, and I also started experimenting with the ukulele, which was a lot of fun. It made me feel adventurous and I have a growing list of instruments I want to learn.

The new album is called Tatlashea. Where did it begin for you and what was the writing and recording process like?

PF: The songs have been around for a while. Cathartic.

PF: Yes.

VW: Has your approach to music changed at all since Women disbanded? What did you learn professionally and personally from that experience as well as others in the music industry that have led to this point?

VW:

VW: The album design is unique in itself. What did you want to represent with that, particularly the map and the illustrations used throughout?

LM: We wanted to have the journeying theme, not just in the music, abut also in the art as well. Zoltan (Szoges) had conceptualized some ideas about having a map to guide listeners through the songs and instrumentation of the album, and then having a lyric book to accompany it with illustrations that serve as a kind of traveller's diary. We took the idea to Benjamin Portas, an artist from New Zealand, and I think he captured the theme and style of the album perfectly.

VW: If you were to trace the musical map that led you to Over Land and Sea, what would it look like?

LM: Well, it started when I was really young, about five, when my mom and dad put me in piano lessons. I grew up in classical piano training, as well as ballet training, and I always thought I'd be a ballet

t was the ugliest thing James Farwell had ever seen.

Bison BC's guitarist glanced at it last year when his dog Milo—a husky/ Great Dane cross who'd lent some unearthly growls to the band's song "Wendigo Pt 1 (Quest for Fire)"—underwent surgery.

"I went into the recovery room, 'cause I wanted that to be the first face he saw when he came out," Farwell begins, talking from Winnipeg in the midst of a snowstorm. "And I just happened to look over, and I saw this fucking mass of gore. And I was like, 'What the fuck was that?' The thing looked like an inside-out cat. It was huge. It was as big as my head. And the nurse was like, 'Oh, I'm so sorry, maybe you shouldn't see that.' And I was like, 'Well, what do you mean?' ...

'Well, that's his spleen and the tumor.'"

In its own grotesque way, that image of angry red flesh became the perfect encapsulation of what ultimately became Lovelessness: an album reflecting of just how brutal a time 2012 was for Bison BC. Friends passed away; guitarist Dan And found himself plagued with health issues and had to step back from the new album's writing process. For the first time, the lion's share of writing fell to Farwell, who wasn't doing so well himself—

on top of all that, Milo passed away shortly after his surgery and Farwell's romantic relationship ended too, all as he hit the ripe ol' age of 40. But in the face of all that, music proved to be an ideal conduit for channeling what he was going through.

"The way my life was, it just so happened that I could put all the crap into music," he says. "And that's the one thing that could save me at that time, was making this record. Making it very personal was the other thing, 'cause I'd never done it. Especially with this type of music, and perhaps what people think about people that play this kind of music, [that] there's a very small spectrum of emotion: there's anger, hatred, distain or, 'Hey, rad, let's party.' There's a very important chunk of the human experience missing with a lot of this extreme music, or whatever you want to call it."

Channeling those experiences, Lovelessness comes through as a weighty, ferocious, rare sort of album. It's primal, muscular, unyielding, a rawer sort of catharsis for the tight-chest feelings that plagued its creation. Lovelessness has only six songs, but its runtime spans more than 40 minutes. A 10-minute jam like "Blood Music" isn't wasted on indulgent ideas in desperate need of pairing down: it uses that length to stretch out and growl, and lets its riffs run slow and massive. Simply put, it's the sound of a band respond-

ing to personal devastation by becoming a more devastating band.

"What I was going for was just complete honesty," Farwell continues.

"There's nothing I was going for, just whatever was happening. And it just so happened that everything was fucking garbage. There was no light, there was no pleasure, there was no serenity. There was no comfort. It was all uncomfortable. It was all brooding, madness, anxiety—the lack of love, was what it was. A terrible time. And I was like 'Fuck it, I'm going to do it.

I'm just going to write about it.' And that was it."

That directly personal approach to extreme music is a rarity in the genre: how often does a metal album favour honest expression over a more horror- show sensibility or grandly epic gimmick, hitting similar sounds without being grounded in the real world?

"It's macho music. it's tough music," Farwell says, of the genre. "And don't get me wrong, I dig my band because it is fuckin' tough music and I love tough music. I want it to be violent, I want it to be that way. But I think it's interesting when you take that aural esthetic of violence, but I'm talking about my dog that passed away, or I'm talking about how I don't think I can love anymore. When you really look at topics like that, the world of whatever topic current metal bands are singing about .... I mean, think about if you had no love—to me,

that's the worst thing. It's worse than nuclear war, it's worse than the government is corrupt, it's worse than whatever the gutteral abomination, entrails-splattering, vivisection, cannibal, holocaust, whatever. I'm thinking about what's really terrifying to me. When I wake up and I think I don't think I can love anymore? That's the most terrifying."

Now, while 2013's shaping up to be a much better year for the band— and Lovelessness has been the band's most acclaimed release to date—it's also an uncertain one. Bison BC was recently dropped from its longtime label Metal Blade.

Farwell wasn't surprised when he saw the letter. He describes the band's relationship with the label as one that had become an uncomfortable fit: given the state the band was in back in 2012, nobody was up for touring—something a label generally likes you to do when you release a new album—and Bison BC had made a departure of an album, too.

"We were going through some heavy shit. We needed to heal, and take care of our families, and take care of our lives. We needed to do that, and we took time: we wrote what I think is the best record we've written, and, well, ... this is what happens when you're dealing with the entertainment business. The reward of that sort of selfcare, and attention to your art, is you get fired," he chuckles, dryly.

The band's entertaining the idea of remaining independent now, he notes, but isn't totally jaded away from the label experience, or even totally bitter towards Metal Blade. "I think there are good people in the music world," he says. "We would just be far more careful than we have been in the past.

Who we get involved with in a business sort of idea."

That said, Farwell's certainly aware of the perpetual sea change the industry continues to try and navigate.

The record label's structure proving itself increasingly outdated as the digital world increasingly becomes the place to trade music, but the increasingly important online world is one that Farwell isn't without his hesitations for, either.

"The Internet is the world. It's how bands exist now," he says. "I remember booking my first tours; I would mail cassette tapes to clubs. Do you remember those fucking days? To risk sounding like a jaded old man, it's getting a little too easy."

It's a valid point: after all, the struggle's what makes you stronger.

"When I see musicians I respect, I respect them because they have character," Farwell says. "Because they have seen life, and they can tell me something about life. There's not many current bands out there right now that can tell me fucking anything about life."

Tokyo String Quartet Sat, Apr 13 (8 pm) McDougall United Church, $10 – $35

ne of the world's most established and celebrated string quartets is about to take its final bow in Edmonton.

After touring the world over and performing more than 100 shows each year, the Tokyo String Quartet is on the road for its last season, following the announcement in the fall of 2012 that violinists Kikuai Ikeda and Kazuhide Isomure would be retiring.

"Kazuhide and I started talking a couple of years ago that maybe we should start thinking about stopping sometime," says Ikeda, who has been with the quartet since 1974 and will be continuing his work as a music professor after retiring from the quartet.

"We wanted to stop before it's too late, and my sense is that if you start seeing the decline both physically and mentally as a player, this happens very quickly. So before it happens, we wanted to make sure that we stopped playing so people would remember us at the top."

For a period of time following the announcement, remaining members Martin Beaver and Clive Greensmith attempted to recruit replacement musicians, but Ikeda says this proved

to be a challenge due to the quartet's name and the expectations that came with it.

"The feeling was that they have to have at least some connection to Japanese culture and Japanese people, so they were kind of limited in that and they decided this would be too difficult," he adds. "I'm sad that Tokyo Quartet is finishing, but at the same time, again, we can finish on a high note, so that is a relief as well."

Aside from being known in classical music circles the world over, each member of the quartet performs on instruments that are part of another renowned foursome: the Paganini Quartet. The group of renowned Stradivarius are named for Niccolò Paganini, who played them during the

19th Century. The Nippon Music Foundation has loaned the coveted instruments to the Tokyo String Quartet since 1995.

"The violin is, in a way, the human body and if you don't play this instrument for long periods of time the instrument goes to sleep and it's very difficult to wake," Ikeda says of preserving his prized violin, the oldest of the group, dating back to 1680. "It takes a long time to feel the instrument is alive again. We've been fortunate we've been using them almost every day and it becomes almost like part of our body. I know how to deal with this instrument, how to bring out certain aspects of it—it's a pleasure to know this instrument."

Besnard Lakes has always been a studio band. The rising-tide guitars, the ripples of keyboard and the dreamyFX'd vocals, all layering forever upwards like an infinite cake, cry out for saccharine Pro Tools trickery to amp up the bliss-out. And on that, Besnard Lakes has always made good: you'd be hard pressed to find a better collection of proggy soundscapes, bong-fog harmonies and drifting guitar tones being played anywhere in the country.

Grandeur and excess are well-established parts of being a psychedelic act, and Besnard Lakes shoulder them well as a band. But at the same time, some of Besnard Lake's best moments— "Albatross" from Are The Roaring Night, or the multiple, tangled hooks of Are The Dark Horse's opener "Disaster"—have used deeper, rock-band dynamics to let those soundscapes erupt every so often with focus and structure. It's this side of the band that's been influenced enough by the pop sensibility of the Beach Boys to make their builds worth the slow burn.

And having Spencer Krug credited on five out of eight songs on Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO is an intriguing prospect: given that Krug's known best for Wolf Parade, a far-from-subtle rock

band, he seems the ideal inclusion to offer some more immediate tension.

Except he doesn't really do that. Krug's presence here is restricted to marimba, vibraphone and xylophone (more akin to his Frog Eyes days), and only seems to give these arrangements an even fuller sound, another layer to add to the collection without altering the songwriting in any noticeable, structural way. In eight songs spread across 48 minutes we get a lot of rich, textured sounds that could use a little more direction in the song department, or at least an anchoring rocker. The results aren't bad: there's what could be the soundtrack to a trippy tour of Atlantis on "And Her Eyes Were Painted Gold"; the slow giant closer "Alamogordo" coasts between a steady chain of drum eruptions; "The Spectre" manages to be the most engaging work here, makes best use of all of those elements, while strangely feeling (relatively) subtle; "Colour Your Lights In Baby" seems ready for a live show chant-along; and "At Midnight" offers the gorgeous lines like "It's always too late," that really do make you just want to close your eyes and drift along. All of the sounds play like a lovely high, but nothing on here embraces Besnard Lake's other, rock band side. Would it have killed 'em to focus in on that even once here? Without it, we just have beautiful drift.

If one had to describe We All Get Lighter, it might be as a winter landscape painting in which ghosts lurk in the background.

Interestingly enough, Raine Maida's latest video for single "Montreal" momentarily shows the Romantic-era painting, Winter Landscape, by Casper David Friedrich. While Raine Maida's 2007 debut The Hunter's Lullaby revolved around spoken word that touched on topics of a political nature, its successor is filled with more personal poetry and a diversity in instrumentation and song structure despite having only eight tracks. Orchestral layers push melody to the forefront as Maida incorporates horns, violins, piano and synthesizers, along with varied vocal techniques which make full use of his vocal range, to conjure up a variety of moods, such as melancholy and strength. "Rising Tide," the only song with spoken word, has a musicality reminiscent of Dan Bejar's Destroyer. Arguably the strongest track, "This Is Gonna Hurt," begins simply before introducing a haunting chorus and later an unexpected cacophony of percussion instruments.

"A Drink of You," which expresses a yearning to recover a lost friend, has a circus feel to it as Maida's low, subdued yet bouncy vocal delivery is accompanied by carefree tinklings of a triangle, wooden block and xylophone.

The Good Women Dance Society is calling for submissions for our 4th annual “What’s Cooking?”.

“What’s Cooking?” is an informal work-in-progress event in which artists get the chance to present their work and engage in valuable feedback discussions with the audience about their work. Audience members will be given written surveys about each piece of work, to both comment and critique the work shown, and there will be a short question and answer period following each piece.

EAC Call to Artists :: Ramble in the Bramble An opportunity exists for a local artist to design and build a transitory public artwork as part of a group of seven artists throughout the key design phases of the project. So order your boyfriend to focus a little more on his own pleasure during sex and a little less on yours. Tell him that, for now, you would like him to be less giving and more taking. And if he worries about being selfish, you can tell him that a study conducted at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia found that people with selfish sex partners reported higher levels of sexual satisfaction. ("Emerging Adulthood: An Age of Sexual Experimentation or Sexual Self-Focus?" by Hayley Leveque and Cory Pederson, 2010.)

I suspect, BIB, that once the focus is off you—once you no longer have to live in fear of a forced march to orgasm each and every time you have sex, once you're no longer under so much pressure—you'll be able to relax and enjoy sex more. You might even initiate once in a while. Good luck. V

As for your relationship, DGW, Bishop Robinson agrees that your boyfriend's inability to break from his emotionally and spiritually abusive friends is a bad sign.

"If DGW's boyfriend is listening to the condemnation of his church and his friends, it makes me wonder how much joy he can take in their relationship," Robinson says. "How free is he to be the gay man he knows himself to be if that is accompanied by guilt and shame? It sounds to me like DGW's boyfriend needs to deal with his own internalized homophobia before he can commit to anyone."

In other words, DGW, you may need to tell your boyfriend that he can have you or he can have his orthodoxy, his awful friends, and what, at this stage of life, amounts to a lot of self-inflicted spiritual wounds.

If your boyfriend can't break away
