Drugs, drugs, drugs A 15-year study in Vancouver's troubled downtown east side has determined that the city's harm-reduction strategy has improved public safety and reduced drug usage, particularly in regards to injectable drugs.

The study, conducted by the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, concludes that "Patterns of injection-related HIV risk behaviour show a dramatic decline over the past 15 years. This is likely attributable to the expansion of harm reduction programs in Vancouver and in particular the increasing availability of drug-injecting paraphernalia through needle-syringe programs and the local supervised injection facility."

A Canadian accomplishment to be proud of, right? Meanwhile, the federal governmentbacked approach—the war on drugs-style emphasis on policing and harsh punishments, like down in the US—is proving itself far less effective in accomplishing those same goals. That hasn't stopped the conservative majority from trying to shutter Insite, Vancouver's flagship safe-injection site, mind you, and while they've been unable to prevent its continued existence outright—a unanimous 2011 Supreme Court decision upheld the site's exemption to the usual drug policies, forcing the government to tolerate its (very, very helpful) existence—the conservative majority is still trying to find other ways to undercut its ability to expand.

The newly introduced Respect For Communities Act, for example, looks to make it more difficult for safe-injection sites like Insite—still North America's only such safe-injection site— to pass through an application process. Ostensibly about demanding greater consultation from the community about any safe injection sites, it seems more rooted in NIMBY-ism and an increase in the hurdles for harm-reduction programs to take hold and prove their merits in the places where it's vital for them to do so.

Harm reduction saves lives. This has been the championing principle behind Insite, one that's now been further confirmed by the BC Centre's study. Yet it's still weakened by the government's actions, which would seem to prefer to live in a fantasy that getting policy-tough on drugs stamps them out. It doesn't, which Prime Minister Stephen Harper even admitted back in 2012. Yet here his government is, making it more difficult for the proven-effective method to take hold and help in other places.

Addicts aren't going to abide by the law. They have an insatiable draw to something that is harming them, and its naive to believe that the idea of harsher punishments are going to deter them. Its about time we started using the most practical, proven methods to combat addition.

But even if Canada's dragging its heels on harm reduction, the idea seems to be spreading across our border: it was recently announced that delegates from Colombia and Brazil had visited Insite to gather data for their own harm-reduction strategies. Even if our own government is trying to champion ideology over actual data, other countries are starting to notice and embrace a practical, realistic approach to combating drugs. V

Following the money

Shining a light on campaign contributions in Edmonton Running a serious campaign for city council in a major city like Edmonton costs money—lots of money. So, with less than four months until the October civic election, candidates are focused on the difficult and murky task of raising funds.

In the last municipal election, according to the online disclosure statements filed by all candidates, the average elected city councillor raised over $65 000. Mayor Stephen Mandel raised $628 000 and his closest competitor, David Dorward, raised over $573 000.

Who gives them this money?

To what extent are corporations and unions involved?

What do contributors expect in return? What are the limits on contributions? Are citizens made aware of who gave money to which candidates? To what extent does money have the potential to distort election results?

For people who value democracy, these are all good questions. Unfortunately, because of the weak campaignfinance legislation in our city and province, the answers require a lot of digging—much more than should be the case.

However, a close look at what information is available in regard to the 2010 election provides partial answers, as well as a clear picture of why we need tougher laws.

In that election, the majority of the successful candidates’ fundraising came from direct donations of more than $100, which is the threshold at which the candidate must reveal the identity of the donor. Contributions of less than $100 only made up $2300 on average for each elected councillor, compared with $50 700 from those who contributed more than $100.

What we also see from the disclosure statements of contributions over $100 is that about two-thirds of these contributions came from corporations—the majority from the development sector. (The Edmonton Journal estimates 56 percent of all contributions come from businesses tied to development.) In other words,

most of the money raised by candidates came from corporations, and most of that money came from "development" sources.

For the mayor’s race, this number is even higher, as Mandel received over $500 000, making up 80 percent of his total contributions over $100, from businesses.

The involvement of the business community in financing the election is actually even greater, because many of the “individual” (as opposed to “corporate”) contributors are well-known Edmonton developers and business people.

Given this enormous involvement of corporate and wealthy interests in financing candidates, it raises the issue of the potential influence on how politicians vote on issues. We are not talking about whether councillors are being bribed or unduly pressured by funders to support specific development projects, but, realistically, if they know that over half of their funding for the next

more forcefully demand that our politicians be willing not only to reveal who their contributors are before the election, but that they commit to exploring stronger campaignfinance rules once they are elected. For example, in Manitoba corporations and unions are not allowed to give donations to candidates for provincial or municipal office. Such donations are already not allowed at the federal level.

Other jurisdictions have lower contribution limits, like Ontario where the maximum contribution is $750 to any candidate ($2500 if you are running for mayor of Toronto) and the most that any one person or business can contribute to all candidates is $5000.

While citizens should ask all council candidates where they stand on these issues, it will be particularly important to know if the mayoralty candidates are willing to address this issue in any substantial way.

And the problems are not limited to Edmonton. In Calgary, the issue of corporate influence over the municipal election hit the news when it was revealed that the Manning Centre was receiving over $1 million from developers to support right-wing pro-developer candidates. Given that the Local Authorities Election Act says the maximum campaign contribution is $5000, it appeared to many that these developers were attempting to use the Manning Centre as a US-style “Super-Pac” in order to get around the election rules.

So what can we do as citizens? As a start, we must

bovici, she confirmed that she has no concerns with the new laws established by the province and questioned why the city should make its own rules.

City hall watchers know that she is getting support from many of the large corporations who backed Mandel, and her campaign team includes many long-time conservative strategists with strong ties to conservative party funders. When asked why the $33 575 she listed from fundraising events during the last election did not reveal any contributors over $100, she said that she “did not know what the price was to get into the events, and so could not comment on why the donors were not listed."

On the other hand, Kerry Diotte has closer ties to the Wildrose Party. He even received a small contribution

from that party in the last election, which is questionable given that provincial parties can issue tax receipts where municipal campaigns cannot.

Interestingly, following the controversy around the Katz network of family and friends donating $430 000 to the Conservative Party of Alberta in the last provincial election, the Wildrose Party has announced they would ban corporate and union funding.

Unfortunately, it appears that Diotte is not willing to take the same stand.

Don Iveson has confirmed that he will reveal who his contributors are prior to the election. He further confirmed that he is willing to explore changing the campaign-finance rules to eliminate contributions from corporations and unions, as long as people are allowed to get a tax receipt for their contributions. He also questions why businesses are able to get tax write-offs for the cost of attending fundraising dinners, while the average citizen does not get any tax receipt for their donations to municipal candidates.

Fortunately, the steps toward more democratic elections are relatively obvious, and are already in place at the federal level as well as in a number of provinces and municipalities in Canada. Basically, we need tougher rules to limit the potential for undue influence by wealthy and corporate interests in our elections.

Edmonton voters can move democratic reform forward by ensuring that campaign finance issues become important in the October election.

By asking candidates where they stand on each of these important questions and insisting on a commitment to campaign finance reform after the election, hopefully we can ensure that the 2013 election is the last one conducted under archaic rules that blatantly favour wealthy corporate interests over ordinary citizens.

The privatization pull

Edmonton's proposed public-private partnership on the LRT's Valley Line: good idea or bad?

hen it comes to using a public-private partnership (P3) to build the Valley Line of Edmonton's LRT system, the city has ventured into unfamiliar territory. While there have been Edmonton-based projects with private contributions in the past, including the Anthony Henday ring road and various schools, they've primarily been provincial infrastructure projects. The Valley Line marks the first time that Edmonton will pass up public ownership for a P3 model, which sees public and private sectors sharing responsibility and risks in delivering public infrastructure.

P3s may be new to Edmonton, but many areas of Canada have been using them for years. Take, for instance, York Region's Viva bus rapid transit line in Ontario, which opened in 2005 and was designed and built using the P3 model. Viva is similar to an LRT line in many ways, and the buses make use of traffic-priority systems at major intersections to make them faster than normal buses. The second phase of the project, called VivaNext, will involve the creation of specifically marked bus lanes to allow Viva buses to skip traffic congestion altogether.

Just as Edmonton plans to integrate the Valley Line with the rest of the LRT system, Viva's bus service is combined with York Region Transit's local bus service, effectively creating

one seamless transit system.

"When you get on the Viva bus, the driver's there with a Viva uniform on, and if you were just a member of the public, you wouldn't necessarily know whether that driver was employed by York Region directly or whether they're employed by a private-sector corporation under contract with York Region," explains Paul May, former director of infrastructure planning for York Region and current Chief Engineer of VivaNext. "They're just there to provide that service."

At the other end of the country is Vancouver's Canada Line, an LRT line created in anticipation of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

The line has been touted by many as one of Canada's greatest P3 success stories in recent years, opening several weeks ahead of schedule in late 2009 and overachieving its ridership goals very quickly. Ken Hardie, who was the director of corporate communications for Translink when the

Ontario had already used P3 models in the past for projects such as hospitals and courthouses, which eased the minds of many going into the Viva project and made the decision to go with this type of model an easy one.

"A lot of services provided by York Region are through the private sector, and I think the public here in York Region are more accustomed to that model of private-sector delivery," May says. "So in York Region, the private sector operations has been a much more accepted model,

Canada Line was being built, says the public reaction to going with a P3 was fairly muted, and that there were more issues with construction impacts along certain parts of the corridor where the line was being built.

"There were some people who simply disagreed with the concept of P3s, but other people were saying, 'Look, if it's a way of getting something built that brings a lot of the private sector discipline and knowledge into the mix, then why not?'"

Hardie explains.

"So there were people on both sides, but to the average person, it was immaterial how it was being built. The fact that it was being built was certainly of huge interest to people who wanted to commute, and as I said, it was the construction impacts more than anything else that were far more high profile than the way that the project came together."

Critics of the Canada Line have pointed out issues with the system, such as how three stations were eliminated from the planned route— though Hardie points out that allowances were made for those stations to possibly be built in the future, and that they ended up adding a stop at Olympic Village. But in his book Straphanger, which examines public transportation in cities across the world, author Taras Grescoe points out, "Thanks to cost overruns, the provincial government will be compensating the private company that operates the [Canada] line with payments up to $21 million a year until 2025." This is a fate Edmonton hopes to avoid with the Valley Line.

Despite having never tackled a P3 project before, Edmonton will have the advantage of being able to look back on past projects like these to learn from both successes and failures. Nat Alampi, program manager of the Valley Line, says they've examined the workings of several P3s, including current LRT projects in Ottawa, Waterloo and Vancouver's Canada Line. They also extended their search outside of Canada, seeking information from transit projects in the United States and bringing on advisors who have been involved in P3 projects globally.

"We're aware that this is our first P3 project, so what we're doing is we're actually leaning on all of our government counterparts with the province of Alberta, with the province of British Columbia, with Ottawa and Waterloo and so on, and we're basically leaning on their lessons learned because they have experience," Alampi says. "In fact, because of our very close working relationship with the province of Alberta, they're lending us all of their templates and they're allowing us to lean on their resources for their expertise and their lessons learned.

"There is just an absolute wealth of experience out there that we're able to tap into and that we are tapping into."

Studying other P3 projects has allowed the city to spot key factors that have helped and hindered these projects, hopefully giving Edmonton the gift of foresight as they proceed with the Valley Line.

"As these projects move along and you go from one project to the next,

there's a better understanding of the implications of how you allocate the risks within these projects," Alampi says. "Risks such as the geotechnical risks associated with tunnelling, with getting environmental approvals for river crossing, how to allocate risks associated with ridership levels, traffic integrations and so on.

That's just a very short list off the top of my head, but it's the allocation of risk and how you define the performance—those are the key lessons that others have learned that we're able to take advantage of."

But for some, Edmonton's relative inexperience with P3s still weighs heavily, and some public interest groups have expressed their concern over how the situation has been dealt with. Bill Moore-Kilgannon, executive director of Public Interest Alberta, says they too have examined P3s in Canada, and have serious concerns about allowing the private sector to be in charge of the maintenance and operation aspects of the line. Fearing what this will mean for the interoperability between the Valley Line and the rest of the transit system, they're also concerned by the current funding gap of $515 million, and feel the Valley Line should be a municipal-elections issue.

"Let's be clear, they sign this contract, it is for 30 years. If the conglomeration of corporations that are building and running this thing screw up or provide crappy service, it'll be too late and there's very little that the citizens of Edmonton will be able to do," Moore-Kilgannon says.

"If it's publicly owned, then at least there's that ongoing public oversight to make sure that the maintenance and the operations are living up to the standards that Edmontonians would expect."

Despite these concerns, the city plans to move forward with the P3 model, and only time will tell if Edmonton's Valley Line will go down as an example of a successful Canadian P3 or not.

"This project is going to go ahead.

It's going to be a big win for the city and for all the residents of Edmonton. I think in our minds, it's not a question of if this project's going to happen, it's a question of when," Alampi says.

"Council has committed to working over the summer to try and secure the funding gap and we're going to be reporting back in August to see where that funding gap is at.

If they're able to close the gap—or even if not completely, at least narrow it a significant amount—we're confident that we're going to be able to go out in the near future and deliver this project for Edmonton." alana willerton

the numbers are quite astonishing. Most countries will at least triple in population; some, like Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia, are predicted to grow fivefold.

That is on top of populations that have already tripled, quadrupled or quintupled in the past half-century. Uganda had fivemillion people at independence in 1962; it is projected to have 205 million in 2100.

The numbers are simply preposterous. Niger, a desert country whose limited agricultural land might feed 10-million people with good management, a lot of investment and good luck with the weather, already has twice as many as that. By the end of the century it will have 20 times as many: 204-million people.

All these numbers are based on assumptions about declining birth rates: if we all just carried on with the birth rates of today, there would be 25-billion people on this planet by the end of the century. It makes no practical difference. Even the "low estimate" of 150-million people in Niger by 2100 is never actually going to happen. That is 15 times too many people for the available land, and Niger certainly cannot afford to import large amounts of food. Even without reckoning in the huge negative impact of climate change, large numbers of people in Niger (and quite a few other African countries) will begin starving long before that.

So the real picture that emerges from the UN's data is rather different. It is a world where two-thirds of the world's countries will have declining populations by 2100. China and Russia will each be down by a third and only the United States, among the major developed countries, will still have a growing population: up from 320 million now to 460 million. (By the way, that means there will only be twice as many Chinese as Americans by then.)

Much to like about Ado

Whedon's playful take on Shakespeare wrings satisfaction out of silly Firefly and Buffy, not to mention his feature films Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers, the exhausting multisuperhero epic Whedon was working on simultaneous to Much Ado—this stripped-down, modern dress production wrings invention from the simplest resources, focusing far more on character development and hi-jinx than elocution or metre.

The plot is deeply silly and not conducive to thorough, coherent synopsis, so I'll sketch out what really matters: two sets of lovers, one eager to fall in love and into marital bliss, the other all but swearing off both love and marriage as insults to their intelligence and corruptors of their freedom, converge at the home of Leonato (Clark Gregg), father to Hero (Jillian Morgese), one of the fair maidens—though much of the plot revolves around the mistaken notion that the maiden in question is no maiden at all, that she was intimate with some other fellow the very night before she was to marry Claudio (Fran Kranz). ostly buoyant and only occasionally too broad, Joss Whedon's playful, loose and low-

budget adaptation of Shakespeare's eponymous comedy is an awful lot of fun. Shot in and around Whedon's own Santa Monica home, employing a group of actors that could be thought of as Whedon's stock company—we see faces from Whedon's TV hits

to watch Much Ado, however, is the other set of lovers, or non-lovers, or not-yet lovers, or inevitable lovers: Benidick (Alexis Denisof) and Beatrice (Amy Acker). The characters come from Shakespeare by way of Howard Hawks or Preston Sturges, their exchanges of withering wit a hugely enjoyable throwback to the romantic comedies of Hollywood's golden age.

Whedon isn't shy about using whatever comic tools he deems fit, whether antiquated—extensive fumbling eavesdrop-sneaking in the bushes or under the countertop; an actual spittake—or contemporary—a clandestine fist pump between schemers when they see their scheme is taking hold. The film's score, composed

by Whedon himself, strikes me as a little too reliant on convention, too fussy and over-used, but even when the music seems to be intruding the actors hold their own. The photography by Jay Hunter is black and white, hand-held, silky, with background

details dissolving handsomely into fuzzy greys—it's like we're watching the action through a sheer silver stocking, which is not at all inappropriate for this saucy erotically tinged romp. Indeed, allusions to sexual activity are taken one step further in brief flashbacks rife with naked thighs and heavy breathing.

By the end of Much Ado About Nothing I felt an unusual sort of satisfaction. As I said, the story is very silly, the plot mechanics creak loudly, and the importance placed on female virginity is kind of appalling. Yet there is something in Shakespeare's language that elevates all of this, making the final moments of resolution and relief feel almost profound. That Whedon, hardly anyone's candidate for the next AD of the Royal Shakespeare Company— at least, not until now—can carry off that feat, can preserve that effect in such a relaxed, confident manner, is an achievement.

A few columns back, writing about Ministry of Fear (1944), I made a parenthetical remark about director Fritz Lang's "trademark dearth of point-ofview." I was referring to his camera's frequent lack of obvious identifiable perspective, his indifference to making us feel as though we're seeing what we're seeing through what could conceivably be the perspective of someone in the movie. Of course, whether knowingly or not, success-

fully or not, films do this all the time.

But they usually do it discreetly, so as to suspend disbelief, blending such shots amongst other shots that do have identifiable points of view, and thus in some sense mirror the flow of consciousness.

By contrast, Hitchcock's films remain the classical cinema's most fluent with regard to establishing points of view; many of his most memorable sequences captivate us because we

are always seeing what the characters see, desiring what they desire, fearing what they fear. When Hitchcock threw in a flashy shot that had no logical point of view, he would frequently do so for shock value; think of the overhead shot of Mother moving toward Arbogast at the top of the stairs in Psycho (1960), unnerving us in the seconds immediately preceding a horrific murder. eaches Does Herself is a multi-camera filming of the "Anti-jukebox musical" the electroclashing Toronto-native's been performing live in her new home of Berlin. It's somewhere between an extended, multi-song Peaches music video and mid-budget Fringe Festival theatre piece. It features plenty of graphic set-pieces and nude bits that should please any fan of the Fatherfucker, who wrote and directed this, too. Yet, filmed as performed, it suffers as a film for that very theatricality.

work if you were in the room as it was happening. But here the fourth wall is a very real screen, the energy in the room fails to translate across it. Then again, even with its pure stage merits, there are drawnout segments where not much of interest really happens. Given it's a fictional take on a career built half on shock, the moments when Herself embraces that shock are some of the best; when it just coasts along on a beat and its acting, it's pretty bland.

Peaches, for all her xxx visionary weirdness, isn't a particularly skillful actor, though the requirements placed on her aren't particularly needy. The music's pretty scattered throughout, long stretches left to a song's base beat and some gestureheavy acting.

There are some great set-piece moments scattered throughout: the giant broadway-prop space vagina that delivers onto her the first spark of creativity; the Fatherfucker dance corps that improve the telling of much of the onstage story, and the Sleater-Kinney-ish two-piece garage band that opens the whole thing up (Well, after a German professor-type gives a rundown of Peaches' biography, in German, the only English coming through being the hilarious vulgarity of her album titles). The scene of her meeting her love has a bizarrely charming centaurs-in-Fantasia vibe, even. But unless you're a diehard devotee to the teaches of Peaches, it's mostly just an underwhelming curio of an archival film. More attitude than accomplishment.

efore the Italian mobster became the movie-myth reflection of the shadowy side of the American dream, up there against the cinema's

back wall, the yakuza were Japan's silver-screen samurai. The criminalorganization shot back the look of the honourable outsider (in the ninkyo eiga of the '60s), the docurealist street thug (in the jitsuroku of the '70s) or the impassive, amoral, doomed killer (in many of Takeshi Kitano's '90s films).

B-moviemaker Seijun Suzuki's Tokyo Drifter is most interesting, though, because it offers the director as outsider. Its B-ness can feel boggy: stilted close-ups of signs, just to tell us where we are; an overelaborate plot with some overly deliberate conversations and confrontations. But its B-ness can also be feverish and over-

ripe, a '60s swamp: recurring shots of black shades and blazing fire; cutaways to the black silhouette of a tree in front of a communications tower; interludes where someone croons the title song; dancers bopping in a club as our power-blue suited protagonist Tetsu (Tetsuya Watari) falls through a trapdoor; sharp yellows, purples and

reds; sudden, oddly staged fight and chase scenes, often on obvious sets.

Suzuki was rebelling against his Nikkatsu studio bosses, who'd given him a tight budget to try to rein in the increasingly wayward director.

(Most fight scenes lack connecting shots because of this cost-cutting.)

At times, Tokyo Drifter feels like a playground for Suzuki to cut fast and loose in—there's a general sense of anarchic screwiness (or screw-youness) to a story that, on paper, is just another tale of a guy trying to go straight, only to get pulled back into the bad life.

The Western elements are there, from stand-offs to the "drifter" Tetsu on a steaming train, leaving town.

But this is mostly a Bond-esque freefor-all. A sprawling bar brawl, antic, comic and melodramatic, sums up the movie itself—an on-screen melee that often seems most fun for the director and cast, not the viewer.

As part of Metro's retrospective, "Shots to Kill: The Sixties Cinema of Seijun Suzuki," Tokyo Drifter's screening with Gate of Flesh (1964), the pulpy, S&M tale of a group of prostitutes working in post-war Tokyo.

Monsters University Now playing Directed by Dan Scanlon

A movie that barely passes

M

onsters, Inc. had a delightful premise—scream-energycollecting monsters were secretly scared of humans, supposed to be "toxic." Twelve years on (just as many MI fans are becoming undergrads?), Pixar's first prequel, Monsters University, mostly takes the old college tropes—frathouse antics, slacker versus keener, nerds uniting, an all-stakes competition—and then doesn't sneak, crawl or run too far with them.

There's a bravura scene near the end—where monocular Mike (voiced

by Billy Crystal, doing his only memorable work in years) and furred fury Sulley (John Goodman) have to scare their way out of much more than just a kid's bedroom—that's far and away the film's best 10 minutes. Much of the rest, from being in class, picking a fraternity, hitting the books, even competing in the "Scare Games" while being mocked all the time, just feels fairly rote. Sulley's too surly a slacker for too long and the film makes its one female of note—the snooty, Britaccented Dean Hardscrabble—the glaring villain.

But then, the script's actually not a campus comedy or campus satire (a monstrous mockery of the Ivy League

would've been nice) but deeply antiuniversity. Mike and Sulley, eventually expelled, work their way up from the mailroom to the scare floor (and into the timeline of the first film) to show how the American Dream should work. Egalitarianism triumphs over elitism; it's not about scholarship or specializing, but about how special you are inside. Plus learning how to bring a team of misfits together (Oozma Kappa or OK), work together, become friends, etc.

It's all a bit pat and precious—not unlike the opening short, The Blue Umbrella, which is also too predictable. Pretty much any spark, spontaneity and character complexity is left for its curbside characters (street vents and gutter pipes) and, in the feature, the sideline monsters: a supersupportive mother who listens, as her "tunes," to death metal; her embarrassed, trying-to-grow-up son; a New Age philosophy-studying monster who blurts out his wishes as if dictating an Id journal; a pokily Midwestern mature-student monster. At the front of the class, meanwhile, the star students' storyline scrapes through with some underwhelming marks.

The second Found Festival sets performance art around Old Strathcona

t began last year as a bold experiment in pushing the boundaries of live performance and it's back for another run: the second incarnation of the Found Festival is set to unleash a new collection of performance art in offbeat locations throughout Old Strathcona.

"Essentially it's us making a bunch of stuff in a bunch of weird places," says Elena Belyea, Found Festival producer. Speaking over the phone on an evening just prior to the festival kick-off, she's good-natured about the rather grandiose way the festival sounds on paper: officially described as a multidisciplinary, site-specific performing arts festival, Belyea explains that it's really just a collection of shorter performance art shows in very nontraditional venues; last year's festival saw performances in a funeral home, a garage and a public park.

The Found Festival was started in 2012 by members of the not-forprofit group Common Ground Arts Society; Belyea became the festival producer rather serendipitously after Common Ground founder

Patrick Lundeen saw a show she directed (an adaptation of Allen Ginsberg's Howl which played at the Timms Centre in 2011) and simply asked if she would be interested in working on a new project.

By virtue of being an entirely new event, Belyea notes that the performances in last year's inaugural Found were mainly done by a group of her own friends and acquaintances—without the leverage of an established festival, she had to call in some favours and rely on people willing to take a chance on something untested. With that first year behind them and some of the kinks worked out, this year's festival was able to do a more formal submission call and involve artists from the greater Edmonton community.

The impetus behind Found is to explore the effects of very specific locations on a performance. Put another way, these shows simply wouldn't exist anywhere else. Early in their creative process Belyea asked each artist to name one or two "dream venues"—their ideal location for the piece—and from there Belyea worked with Andrew Ritchie, the artistic director of Common Ground, to approach Old Strathcona businesses about their willingness to host a performance during the festival.

"We get some really bizarre fits,"

Belyea says. "Michelle Martin is doing an installation and we talked about a number of different things.

It has to do with memory and then it turned out that the [Alberta] Railway Museum was OK with being a space. Michelle had certainly not come to us and said, 'I would kill for the Railway Museum.' But when she got it, it wound up being a really good fit."

Other events at this year's Found Festival will occur in a barber shop, back alleys, a residential apartment, a van and several city parks, including Dr Wilbert McIntyre Park (better known as Gazebo Park), which is also the location of the festival box office. The festival features a Citizens' Gallery of visual art (which anyone can participate in, so long as there's still space) in the Strathcona library, as well as an open-mic-style found text reading at Remedy Café. It's certainly an eclectic handful of locales, and admittedly the sheer quirkiness of staging a performance in such locations is part of the appeal. But Belyea stresses that it's important for site-specific work to move beyond using the location as the only selling feature.

"As far as avoiding the gimmick goes, I think it's finding a way to not just be relying on the space to

be doing all of the work for you," she says. "The piece needs to be good; you need to be using your space well.

"My understanding of site-specific is that your site is the text," she continues. "In other words, the site has to be the foundation that you're building the piece off of. If you have an idea for a piece, and you're kind of coming and trying to jam it into that space then it'll be in conflict; you'll be able to feel it when you're watching the piece."

There are other risks involved in staging work of this nature, and Belyea notes that she has felt somewhat terrified contending with all of the "what ifs" that must be considered.

"There's a lot that you just can't control," she says. "You can't control the weather. You can't control the city laws so you have to really do your research; you can't just go out and do whatever you want— you're going to get fined. We had a music show last year where we got a noise complaint and we had to shut it down.

"A friend of mine was talking about the 'kamikaze audience member,'" she continues. "We're used to the contract that gets signed when you go into a show and you buy a ticket: you know that means that you go sit in your seat and you're

quiet, whereas in site-specific stuff the rules aren't quite the same. It's really liberating: if you can't see, you go stand somewhere else; if a performer moves somewhere, you move with them. But it also means that you get the kamikaze audience member who really wants to make it their experience. It's great; ultimately I think that attitude will allow you to get more out of a piece, but at the same time, if you're performing you gotta be ready to interact with this person."

On a higher level, the Found Festival marks a significant shift in both the presentation and conceptualization of performing art in Edmonton. Bringing together audience and artist in these unusual, more casual spaces fosters what Belyea describes as "cross-pollination" between different genres and different groups of artists, which she hopes will spur further development of new works.

"The theme for me this year is community—which sounds maybe a little hokey," she says. "But there are layers to that. First off, because it takes place in the community of Edmonton, of Old Strathcona, and that it's site-specific work which necessarily is referencing the space that the piece is in, there are a lot of references to Edmonton: different locations in Edmonton, Edmonton's mythology and Edmonton lore.

There are also a lot of pieces that raise questions in terms of what is a community, and how is that defined—we have a community that's defined by the physical space we're in, but what about the communities of people and networks that we create for ourselves?

"Site-specific work is so rich; the context of the space gives you so much," she adds. "I think that it encourages you that there is space available; in order for work to be legitimate it doesn't need to be in a gallery or a theatre or a presentation space—that people can still see and be affected by your work if it's in a more non-traditional venue. My hope is that these kinds of projects, by participating in the pieces or in observing them, that they encourage artists to be taking ownership of their community and be contributing to the artistic and cultural landscape of their cities.

"If you don't like where you're living or you don't like how it looks, you have an option to go do something about it."

he Freewill Shakespeare Festival, or Shakespeare in the Park as it's fondly referred to, has established a sterling legacy in Edmonton and will celebrate its 25th anniversary this summer. While today the festival easily tops the list of the most anticipated theatre events of the summer, young artists might like to know that it began just as humbly as any other artistic dream. Having just completed her BFA at the University of Alberta, Annette Loiselle and a few interested classmates set out to see if Shakespeare in the Park could work in Edmonton.

"1989 was our first year," Loiselle recounts. "People are pretty savvy at selfproducing now because of great festivals like NextFest, but at the time we were pretty naïve. We got one grant so we could hire an administrator, we paid our director with the tips we made at our restaurant jobs and we went dumpster diving for our set. In the end, though, people came out. It blew us away, and that's when we knew we had something good on our hands."

It wasn't until 1998 that a second play was added, making the event a festival proper. Edmontonians have since en-

joyed the tradition of one comedy and one tragedy, and the offerings this year will be A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Lear, respectively. Each year, creative liberties are taken to ensure that audiences see fresh interpretations of Shakespearian classics, and these spins have helped the festival to develop a reputation for exceptional theatre.

Marianne Copithorne, director of A Midsummer Night's Dream, has written some new characters for this year's interpretation of the beloved classic. The plot is an imaginative web of love triangles and hosts several mischievous twists while crossing between the worlds of fairies and humans.

"Our clever director has come up with a great concept that includes the humans actually becoming some of the fairies written for the play," Loiselle explains.

"Each human has a unique personality and is absolutely charming. Ultimately, we see all of those human personalities manifested in fairy form. It's light and it's funny."

As for King Lear, director Jim Guedo approached the project already having a clear idea of how to cut the four-hour storyline into a two-hour piece that would still pack the same punch. work, created as a part of his MVA show at the University of Alberta, has a deceptively renaissance quality. Ogilvie even honed his impressive skill a la da Vinci: by drawing cadavers in a morgue. Yet, he put that talent to a decidedly contemporary end. One might even say a revolutionary end.

he sultry sounds of jazz music and tantalizing moves of burlesque will play off one another as the ladies of Sinners, Freaks and Geeks fundraise for their upcoming Fringe Festival show.

With the help of the Jonny McCormack Quartet, the show, aptly titled Jazzin' Around, offers a live jam session packed with three music sets and nine burlesque numbers featuring Holly Von Sinn, LeTabby Lexington and Delilah LeDouche. While the performers have chosen the songs that will accompany their routines, Delia Barnett (aka LeTabby) explains there

is still a level of improvisation required for each number.

"It's so different from anything I've gotten to do where the music is canned, and as long as the

nhanced interrogation—in reality, it's a glossy term for questionable-torture practices that cross the line. It's a practice used by NATO and its allies overseas, and gets explored in Eyes of the Enemy, which follows an American-Canadian journalist detained and transported to an unknown location, where he is subjected to such methods of questioning.

The production—written by Chris W Cook, who plays Jack— debuted at the Calgary Fringe Festival in 2011 and went on to receive glowing reviews at last year's Edmonton Fringe Festival.

It's being remounted in partnership with Amnesty International as a response to audiences wanting to learn more about the issue.

"We're going to have talk-back sessions and we're going to have Amnesty International there to talk about what torture is and how prevalent it is and how Canada has really become ambivalent towards it," says Cook, who shares the stage with Evan Hall as Corbin, the intelligence officer. "And how our

government has taken a stance that we won't use it, but we'll use information from it and how this has been a really fundamental shift in the last few years."

Development for the story began in 2007 when information about the happenings at Abu Ghraib prison began to surface. Cook also discovered a series of articles in Adbusters that exposed how commonly torture was practiced by the US government, and by proxy, the Canadian government. His research eventually led him to the Kubark Manual published by the CIA, which is publicly accessible.

It was published in the '60s and spread around mostly Latin American countries under dictatorships, and essentially taught people how to torture for interrogation.

"When I started writing the play back then, I wrote it set with Canadians ... it was supposed to be this dystopian future that I thought if things went poorly, we could go down that road," Cook explains, noting Canada has begun to head in directions he never expected when he began writing the play, and that dystopia has taken on a more real sense. "It's been shocking how Canada has just kind of fallen

in line with this American practice that removes any humanity and any idea of humanity from their involvement with prisoners."

This has led to a sense of complacency when it comes to human rights, which Cook attributes to being presented with a lot of distractions in modern society and a sense that if it's not happening to us or we're not connected in some way, it is easier to brush off. However, ignoring a problem does not make it go away, and while Eyes of the Enemy is fiction, it acts as a commentary nonetheless.

"The biggest thing we want to spread is awareness about torture and how it's happening all the time and Canada is not separate from it; Canada is very much involved and we're not moving away from it, we're moving towards it," Cook says, adding the production will be travelling to the Vancouver Fringe Festival this year. "Now all these things are really coming to a head in Canada, and I think it's important that people are cognizant and aware that these things are happening." meaghan baxter

express their undying love to him and only the two eldest oblige, the youngest daughter is disinherited and the two eldest women split the kingdom.

The story unravels into tragedy after that, and there will be murder, betrayal and gore a-plenty. Loiselle admires the production's willingness to embrace the darkness Shakespeare intended for this play, and reports strong directorial

choices like moving two traditionally offstage murders onstage.

"The play is very dark, and we're not shying away from the violence," Loiselle explains.

"This is a play of big scenes and big ideas, but Jim has also found the domestic within that. Ultimately, it's about a dysfunctional family and what happens when power is transferred, love is betrayed and rights are given away."

My first impression is followed by a more eerie sense: this supper scene is familiar in more ways than one.

Ogilvie's slight top-down perspective prominently displays the table.

A white tablecloth stands out from a dark background. A wine glass held by a young woman forms the heart of the composition. This is precisely the formulaic depiction of The Last Supper by countless old masters including a striking reference to Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus (1601), a painting that also beckons the viewer to sit down.

As it turns out, Ogilvie captured these Last Supper-like scenes through a curious experiment. He invited his good friends from Da Capo (friends formed during long sketching sessions at the café) to his studio for dinner. As the night wore on and wine flowed, he captured hundreds of quick-suc-

cession photos of his friends' intimate interactions.

The result is a series of moments frozen in time; each figure is depicted with changing facial expressions like a time-lapse camera. Some versions break with reality and the faces turn, for instance, a ghostly green. Others are drawn onto the canvas, giving the work a café-sketch feeling.

The mixture of stylistic anachronisms with historic and Biblical references gives this scene symbolic proportion: like a time machine that carries us through a history of dinner conversations. What it means to commute with others today, every day, is brought to light.

"These are paintings of my friends, but it speaks about a larger issue," Ogilvie explains. "A lot of this came out of disenchantment. Something is wrong with our culture."

Seeds of insight came during his travels to Costa Rica, a country listed at the very top of the Happy Planet

Index (the US ranked 105th, Canada 65th). Ogilvie observed the sheer joy of social exchange and strong family ties—a sharp contrast to the oppressive business of American culture.

He found provocative articulation of this phenomenon in books like Christopher Lasch's The Culture of Narcissism and philosopher Charles Taylor's The Malaise of Modernity among others.

As tempted as he is, Ogilvie didn't go into the streets to change the foundations of American values.

Instead, he created this art: a still, slowly executed portrait of contemporary life that is inviting, beckoning and profoundly critical. There is a longing for the social communion of The Last Supper in his work, a longing that's close yet broken. Each of the figures is locked within their own psychological "cubicle" of paint.

Friends are divided: together yet irrevocably alone.

n 2008, sushi chefs Raymond Ho and Kin Lui teamed up with environmentalist Casson Trenor in order to open North America's first sustainable-sushi restaurant, Tataki, in San Francisco. The three pioneers were committed to spreading the word about sustainable sushi and spent the better part of two years surrounded by media coverage that seemed to be accomplishing just that. Time Magazine even named Tataki's founders "Heroes of the Environment" in 2009. Despite sushi's popularity in landlocked cities like our own, though, the response to inquiries about sustainable sushi in Edmonton is still a clear and resounding "Huh?" Sustainable sushi essentially refers to the movement popularized by the opening of Tataki. The seafood used in sustainable-sushi dishes will be caught in ways that cause minimal harm to the ecosystems they're taken from and will not include fish that are currently endangered or being overfished. Bluefin tuna, hamachi, unagi (eel) and certain types of farmed salmon are some popular menu items that restaurants like Tataki have cut and substituted in the name of sustainable-sushi practices.

There's a lot that sushi-lovers can do to begin eating sustainably, and knowing what to ask about is key. Kelly Roebuck, the sustainable seafood campaign manager over at Living Oceans Society says the practicality of eating sustainably isn't quite as time-consuming as you might

think.

"There are many threats facing our oceans today, including over-fishing and harmful fishing methods," Roebuck explains. "One of the easiest ways consumers can help our oceans is by simply making smart seafood choices at their local sushi restaurant. Salmon, shrimp and tuna—some of the most common seafood items found in sushi, more often than not, fall under the unsustainable umbrella. The good news is, there are many sustainable-sushi items consumers can eat while supporting healthy oceans at the same time."

SeaChoice, a partnering organization with Living Oceans Society focused on education and policy reform, has created a colour-coded wallet guide that consumers can reference to make quick and informed decisions when they order.

Sushi-lovers can also download the free app Seafood Watch. The app is run by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and it allows sushi-goers to quickly look up a type of fish or to simply browse categories like "best choice" or "avoid." The newest feature, Project FishMap, allows app-users to add a location to the existing map of sustainable-seafood locations. So far, consumers have created a database of locations in 1399 American cities. While that's not the most helpful aspect of the app for Canadians, the map is completely usergenerated—a concept that could easily

be expanded to fit the needs of consumers in other countries.

In Edmonton, the number of sushi restaurants is constantly on the rise, but we have yet to see a similar move towards sustainable sushi. While this fact might not surprise some, it should. If you've watched food culture evolve in Edmonton over the past two decades, you'll have noticed that interest in knowing where our food comes from, how it's produced and the possibility of chatting with the farmer who grew it has become very appealing. The voice of the consumer is a powerful catalyst for change, and in Edmonton, that's certainly been the case when it comes to sustainable-food practices. The organization Sustainable Food Edmonton works to educate consumers about where their food comes from and how it is produced, but going overboard on sustainability all at once is unnecessary, explains SFE's executive director Areni Kelleppan.

"When it comes to eating sustainably, you have to start by figuring out what's a priority for you," Kelleppan begins. "Is it meat that comes from a sustainable source? Is it produce? It can be an overwhelming process if you start out by saying everything you're going to eat will be sustainable. It doesn't have to be a militant, extreme approach; it can simply be a matter of adding some sustainability to your diet and being aware of what that means for you."

Since sushi is now enjoying global popularity, it seems an apt choice for slipping some sustainability into one's diet.

"We get questions about sustainable seafood all the time," says Bryan Fallwell, owner of Billingsgate Seafood Market.

"It's just a matter of customers asking any of our employees. Recently, there was concern about sea bass, but we've now switched over to a sustainable, MSC-certified source (Marine Stewardship Council). We have no business if the fish stop coming, so we have to take an interest in sustainability."

Last month, National Geographic's

"News Watch" blog published a piece on a restaurant in San Diego that places edible QR (quick response) codes on top of each order of sushi they serve. These QR codes allow customers to scan their meal with their smartphone in order to read about the specifics behind their sustainableseafood choice of the day. While techsavvy innovations like that seem far-off for Edmonton, the desire for sustainable seafood practices has a voice, and it's possible that sustainable sushi is just around the corner.

To make the ultimate poor-man's sangria, simply mix wine half-and-half with orange juice. This is how mimosas are made with sparkling wine, but it also works for white wine and even red wine too—admittedly the red wine version sounds kind of gross (and the cloudy purple colour doesn't look particularly appetizing either) but trust me: this is actually a halfdecent way to liven up a cheap bottle of wine.

In terms of the type of wine you should use for sangria, almost anything works. A classic Spanish version will call for Spanish wine like Tempranillo or Rioja, but you can use anything so long as it isn't overly oaky—oak flavours tend to clash with the fruit. I prefer using lighter-bodied, fruity reds like Pinot Noir, Beaujolais or Merlot.

One final note on those prepackaged sangrias that you'll find in the liquor store: avoid them. They are loaded with preservatives and sickly sweet. It's so easy to make sangria on your own that you just don't need to bother with that junk. V

Sangria Recipe Feel free to adjust all ingredients and proportions to your liking.

1 bottle of red (or white) wine Splash of orange juice 1 lemon, cut into wedges 1 lime, cut into wedges 1 peach or nectarine, roughly chopped 1 mango, roughly chopped 2 ounces of brandy or Triple Sec (optional) 3 cups ginger ale, Sprite or 7-Up Handful of frozen berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and/or cherries) or ice Pour wine into a large juice pitcher.

Squeeze the juice from the lemon and lime into the wine and then toss in the wedges.

Add the rest of the chopped fruit and the orange juice and brandy.

Stir well then chill for at least an hour.

Just prior to serving add the ginger ale, Sprite or 7-Up. Serve over frozen berries or ice.

Open at 8am every Saturday.

o, yo, yo, yo," greets Sebastian Bach from his home in sunny Beverly Hills before quickly launching into an explanation about how it was after his home in New Jersey was destroyed by a hurricane that he landed in the star-studded zip code. "California is where I always wanted to live—since I was a kid anyway.

It's pretty ironic how things work out."

The plan is to rebuild his original home, but in the meantime, the former Skid Row frontman has plenty of projects to keep him busy. For the past month he's been filming a new TV show for ABC called Sing Your Face Off. Bach joins Jon Lovitz, Toronto Raptors team member Landry Fields, China Anne McClain from the Disney Channel and Lisa Rinna in a singing competition that involves each performer assuming the identity of another artist through the use of prosthetics and other esthetic alterations. The

show is expected to debut sometime this summer, but Bach's only allowed to reveal one of his alter-egos for the time being—Adam Levine of Maroon 5.

"I dig Adam's voice. He's a great singer and it was fun to sing that, but the very second where they transformed my hairdo into Adam Levine's hairdo was a sad day in rock because I had to put away all my locks underneath like a bald cap. Then they put on this math-teacher hairdo and it was like man, I really appreciate my follicles at this very moment," he laughs, explaining he'll be coming almost straight from filming to make his Boonstock appearance. "It's a crazy way to switch my brain, but I can't wait to do it because I like being in control of my nose. It'll be fun to play with my own face for a change.

There's your headline! I'm looking forward to Boonstock so I can play with my own face; I'm coming as Sebastian Bach."

Aside from assuming the identities of other artists and hanging out with the Trailer Park Boys—Bach has a part in the new Swearnet film—he's been working on his own musical endeavours, includ-

ing the recently released live DVD/double CD ABachalypse Now. The live footage was filmed over the course of three shows last year: Hellfest in France, Club Nokia in Los Angeles and the GrasPop Festival in Belgium, which was filmed during a torrential downpour.

"I couldn't run around at all and I remember saying to myself, 'What the fuck am I going to do in this show? I'm in a puddle.' I've never been in that situation before and I remember switching a fucking switch in my brain and I remember saying, 'I'm just going to fucking punish these motherfuckers with my pipes of doom," he laughs, explaining the set turned into him standing in the middle of the stage essentially screaming his lungs out—the fury of which surprised both himself and his bandmates. "Here's my challenge: it feels so good to move around in music ... I have to find the happy medium between doing pirouettes and sounding as good as I can."

Bach's also got a new album in the works, but there's no release date just yet.

ON THE RECORD

"It's sooner than you think. That's what I can tell you," he responds slyly.

The album's been a personal challenge of sorts for Bach, as it follows up Kicking and Screaming, a successful release he admits is a hard one to top. Bach teamed up with producer Bob Marlette once more and collaborated with Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses and guitarist Devin Bronson, who's worked with the likes of Theory of a Deadman and Avril Lavigne.

"I don't let anything come out that stinks, except for The Last Hard Men maybe. I'm sorry for that one; that wasn't very good—that was a confusing time, though," he adds. "I know what good rock 'n' roll is when I hear it and when I'm so excited that I want you to hear it too, that's when it's ready to come out."

Bach won't be revealing any of the new material at Boonstock, but he promises he'll play the hits all the way back to 1989. And if it happens to rain that day?

Watch out.

Conceptual recording

A story runs through Trigger Effect's latest album Lyrics first? Music first?

NB: We knew that we wanted to make a cohesive concept record, so we kind of determined the overall arc and flow, then put together the music, then finalized the lyrics. I always find it better to adapt lyrics to music, rather than the other way around.

Fri, Jun 28 (6 pm) With Wilhelm scream, the flatliners Ritchie Hall, All ages Loud is the way Trigger Effect likes things, and the band's fifth release, What's Left to Eliminate, is no exception. Its signature abrasiveness and catchy riffs make up the band's first-ever concept record, which tells the story of one man's metaphysical search for truth in all the wrong places.

Before Trigger Effect arrives in Edmonton, Nick Babeau explained the recording process to Vue.

make What's Left to Eliminate from the initial songwriting through to the end of the recording?

Nick Babeu: We had a couple of songs that we were playing on our tours last year that ended up on WLTE. [They were] adapted and rewritten to fit the storyline, though, so it's kind of hard to say. However, it would be safe to say that the intensive writing and pre-production started when we got home in the fall of last year and the actual recording took place over a week at the beginning of January.

When you were writing the songs, did you come at them in a particular way?

VW:

How long did it take to

VW: Did the songs come from one person fully formed, or were they sketches that were then filled out as a group?

NB: No matter if someone comes in with a few riffs or a completed song, it always gets hacked up and scrutinized and twisted around in the jam space. It can be very frustrating, but we always end up getting to a place where everyone is stoked on what's coming out. We all have very different tastes in music, and so the fiveway tug-of-war ends up working for us.

VW: What were the recording sessions like for this album? Is this the kind of thing you recorded live or did you piece it together one track at a time? Why? NB: We always record the basics live on all our records. Then once we have the basic drums, bass and guitars down we can start layering more fun stuff on top.

Recording live gives it a more real, raw, furious feeling. It also keeps us sharp. Recording things bit by bit can be tedious,

can lead to laziness and can end up sounding artificial.

VW: Were there any other songs written that were left off the album?

NB: I don't think any songs were cut in their entirety, but there's always bits and pieces that get scrapped. Sometimes they get worked into other parts of other songs, or turned into transitions, but sometimes they're just discarded and forgotten.

VW: How did you decide which songs to include on the album? Did you have an idea of what you wanted What's Left to Eliminate to be when you started, or did the finished shape emerge as the writing and recording went along?

NB: We started with the intention of creating a cohesive concept record, not just a pile of random songs. I think we made that come across fairly plainly in the composition of the record as well as the packaging. There wasn't really a question of what to include or not since the entire record was written as a whole. The songwriting and storyline were finalized before we hit the studio.

VW: You

worked with Ian Burton to produce the album. What drew you to him and what did he bring to the process?

NB: We had toured with some of his old bandmates in Bionic and had played a few shows around the country with C'mon.

We liked the way Cursed II sounded, so we approached him and he was into it.

We had a few options on the table, and this one seemed like the best fit. It was tons of fun to work with Ian: he's a rad dude. His major input was in playing with sounds and textures, fucking with mic placements, effects, layers and such. It was lots of fun and we definitely learned a lot from him. We may have made him dumber though. We also learned that the man can mix a fierce Long Island iced tea.

VW: If you were to trace the musical map

that led you to What's Left to Eliminate what would it look like?

NB: We knew we wanted to write a rippingly fast and loud record, but we also had some fun writing more dramatic stuff like on "Escape from Planet Scorpion."

I had been reading lots of Regardie, Fortune and other weird shit, so I had a pretty clear idea that I wanted to write a story about a dude's misguided search for truth and meaning culminating in salvation by means of tragedy. So I guess if we were to map it out, it would look like two great big grassy mounds with a long wiggly road emerging from between them. V

aunting, ethereal and visceral are just a few of the many words that could be selected to describe Jenny Berkel's music. The Winnipeg-based folk songstress is reflective and poignant in imagery-saturated lyrics, which welcome listeners into her world—the joys, the sorrows and everything in between.

Berkel's latest album, Here On A Wire, was an incredibly personal and introspective undertaking, dedicated to her grandparents who were killed in a car accident three years ago. Berkel is now in the midst of writing new material that has taken on a more upbeat tone, though she jokes her idea of upbeat isn't what most would consider to be so.

"I've been writing songs with more movement in them. Usually I just pick my guitar; I haven't ever been much of a strummer, but I've been working on getting more diversity to my songs and different pacings," she explains over the phone from Nelson, BC, following an appearance at the Tiny Lights Festival in Ymir, adding she's also been working to take a more observant approach with her lyrics, rather than pouring everything out in an immensely personal way. "I was

reading Rainer Maria Rilke when I was in France and he had a revelation with his writing where he started writing—I think he called them picture things—and taking something and writing about that something and still bringing up things that everyone can relate to, but not saying it from a very introspective, personal point."

It was during this time in Europe (a three-month period in February touring with David Simard) when Berkel began to shed some of her previous inclinations when it came to her writing—particularly the mindset that she wasn't capable of writing on the road.

"I always think I have to have a home base to write and this is the first time I've been on the road and managed to figure out how to write in the company of other people, and even while physically travelling on a road or train," says Berkel, who's been performing some of the new material from that trip during recent shows and plans to get to work on an album this fall. "I'm a very private person and I like my solitude, and I'd always assumed that that situation had to be created for me before I could work on something. I feel very aware of my surroundings when I'm writing. I'm not sure exactly what changed in my mind or my understanding of my space, but I've been able to very much focus in on what I'm doing and not pay attention to my surroundings."

embers of the city's music community are teaming up to lend a hand to one of its most steadfast and active members, Fred LaRose, who has been in and out of the hospital battling cancer since March 2012.

"He truly is a gem in Edmonton," says fellow musician and fundraiser organizer Rusty Reed, who met LaRose in the late '80s when he was searching for a bass player. "I don't know anyone else in Edmonton that's more loved than Fred LaRose."

made a name for himself performing for musicians such as Emmylou Harris, Townes Van Zandt, kd lang, Guy Clark and Spencer Davis. He also worked as a session musician, producer and member of The Trucks, as well as CTV's Sun Country national broadcast, to name a few of his many credits.

This is the second fundraiser that has been organized for LaRose, with the first held last April. Reed says it's been overwhelming to witness the response from the community and to see so many come out to support LaRose. He mentions Big Hank Lionhart in particular, who had posters and tickets ready to go in less than 24 hours from the time Reed initially contacted him to help out.

"A calendar day doesn't go by without me checking in on him," he says,

recalling their touring days in the '80s when LaRose—whom he considers his closest friend—would be the one to keep the driver awake or convince the band to pull the van over and pick up a hitchhiker freezing in -40 C. That's just the type of person he is, and Reed says he's always been the one to pitch in and help others—now it's his turn.

"If it were me sick, I know Fred would be doing the same thing for me—or at least he better," Reed jokes. "It's unfortunate that cancer hits everybody. No one's exempt and I know there's a lot more people that need help out there."

We had great chemistry in the room." Fleming notes that everybody in the band, new or old, wrote at least one song on the finished album.

A band, a van and some attitude

NFU's three decades spent as living, volatile legends casts a long shadow, even over itself.

Its time as an enduring symbol of melodic punk has been as combustive as it has been influential: the list of former members numbers in the high teens, and there are now three distinct eras of activity going back to the early '80s, the most recent coming out of the desire for a 30th anniversary show from frontman Ken 'Chi Pig' Chinn. It wasn't a reunion that a lot of its former members wanted to be a part of.

"Basically, everybody's got jobs and kids now, and didn't really want to reciprocate," guitarist Ken Fleming says, whose

original span of time with the band was back in '92. "I've always kept good friends with Ken, and being the old bass player, I figured, 'Fuck, why not?' He wanted me to play guitar, so we put the band together for a 30th anniversary, and that's how it fired up again."

Rather than restrict this reunion to a few live tours, this incarnation of SNFU— Fleming, Chinn, drummer Jon Card, guitarist Sean Colig and Kerry Cyr on bass—has now yielded the band's eighth album, Never Trouble Trouble until Trouble Troubles You. It's out in the fall, though limited numbers will be available at shows as SNFU treks through western Canada.

It's the first SNFU album without founding guitarist Marc Belke, which comes with its own sorts of difficult-to-manage expectations, though Fleming notes not

Still, the band's third wind hasn't been without issues: at first, Belke denounced the line-up, though he and the band eventually made peace. Then a lot of the band's tour dates in 2011 were cancelled due to Chinn's ill health. For his part, Fleming now lives an ocean away from the rest of the band, in Japan: he met his now-wife while there on tour with Isolation 3 (during the 2011 tsunami/earthquake, of all times).

Now, Fleming spends most of his time learning the language and working, and while the distance between himself and the rest of the band seems difficult, he's quick to put the pacific ocean-commute into perspective.

"It takes longer to drive from Calgary," Fleming explains. "I can make it to Vancouver faster [from Japan]. And you know what? In this modern-day age, I've been navigating and doing the same kind of work for the band since the beginning of doing this—I actually get more done there, because I'm a completely straightedge guy there."

here's a throwback coming our way, and along with a chance to reminisce comes an opportunity to see honky-tonk rockers The Uncas and genre chameleons Sally's Krackers perform on the same bill for the first time in nearly six years.

The bands used to do shows together on a regular basis, but lives take on different paths and gradually gigs became less and less frequent. The Uncas does about two shows together a year these days (its members are still active in the local music scene in other ways, and a new Uncas EP is currently in the works, but no solid release date has been set) and it's been years since Sally's Krackers got together.

"Some of the guys in Sally's Krackers have members that share new projects of ours and basically, it was a shot in the dark," says Uncas member Mark Feduk, who's currently involved in Red Ram and Tallest to Shortest with bandmate Sean Brewer. He sees Uncas shows as a reunion of sorts anyway, and wanted to co-headline with a band it had performed with in the past. Turns out, the shot in the dark paid off, as Sally's Krackers had started practicing

together to perform at a friend's wedding.

The Uncas is only a couple of years older than Sally's Krackers, Feduk notes, and he recalls doing shows with the group when it was first starting out, acting as an unofficial mentor for a young band getting into the scene—one that he (along with his bandmates) has continued to be actively involved in, encouraging others as they gain exposure.

"I think that's how a really strong scene happens, is when everyone's working together rather than against each other, and sometimes in music you see that competitiveness between bands where people are jealous of someone who's doing well," Feduk says, adding it was during the year he lived in Saskatoon, where he became immersed in the music scene, befriending members of now successful bands like the Sheepdogs and Deep Dark Woods, which inspired him to start Ruby Tuesdays.

"I think I was also inspired by what I saw in Saskatoon, by how all these different bands, even if they were different genres ... everyone supported each other; everyone would go to each other's shows and help each other and I think I wanted that sense of community here in Edmonton, too."

Last year he was the touring bass player for Nashville Pussy, and this June, only a few weeks after the SuperSuckers blew through Dirt City, the incomparable Mr Spaghetti released his third solo album. ing true to the group's signature prog-influenced indie-rock. Rhythmic, driving guitar chords are at the centre of Violent's energetic melodies—which are much less aggressive than the album title may lead one to believe—swapped out at different points in the album in favour of more subdued piano compositions, much like on "20 Ft Up." It's an album full of contrasting tones and ambience, accented by powerful crescendos and poignant lyrics—particularly on album closer "Punch My Face," which is certainly a testament of less is more. When it's all said and done, Violent marks a solid return for a band that exudes potential.

So-called indie electronic bands are all the rage these days.

Unfortunately on the band's debut album, Bear Mountain barely stands out from the over-saturated genre. While the Vancouver-based duo cleverly weaves lavish, arpeggiated synthesizers with polished guitar and drums, when the Bee Gees-inspired vocals kick in, the songs come off as forced with exaggerated emotion. On "Faded," frontman Ian Bevis laments, "I spent my whole lifetime to be / It's like you never come home"— cringe-worthy lines on an otherwise playful and engaging track. If you can get past Bear Mountain's far too grandiose lyricism, the 30-minute XO eagerly fills the role as a sunny, feel-good summer dance album.

rodeo clown, and not one of the 10 tracks that make up The Value of Nothing will surprise anyone who has ridden with Spaghetti during his evolution. With the help of Jesse Dayton (who shares vocal duties on the ironically titled duet "One Man Job") Eddie has stomped down some good-time pop-rock country jams that will win over any sunny afternoon side stage or dimly lit, steady drinking honky-tonk. Always quick with a joke and great with punchlines, this record is vintage Spaghetti. "Fuckin' With My Head" just seems like a fun excuse to repeat "Fuckin' with my head," While "If Anyone's Got the Balls" features a corral of PG 13 anatomical allusion lobbed out in a bouncy tongue twister of a chorus and "You Get to Be My Age" is a radio-friendly hug that's as close to a love song as Eddie gets. It's all the same three-chord structure you've come to expect from Spaghetti, without much variation, but through it all The Value of Nothing finds the songwriter in a pretty good place with no intention of changing his tune.

The Courtneys is a trio of young Vancouver women making sunny, low-key guitar-pop with a healthy helping of '90s nostalgia. The group's debut self-titled LP collects eight jangly tracks from their K C Reeves demo tape like "Nu Sundae," a sly reference to Vancouver's Nu Sensae, and broke-as-a-joke anthem "Insufficient Funds," as well as newer material like single "90210" and "Delivery Boy." The Courtneys is a great album to soundtrack late-night beers with the best buds at the beach and is definitely a nice album for summer nights. Under the warm guitar tones and multi-layered vocals is a deeper melancholy concerned with youthful indiscretions like crushes— as in "Delivery Boy"—and trying to eke out an existence as in the riff-heavy anthem to the broke and unemployed, "Insufficient Funds."
