History
History In 1858, the Ditisheim brothers made a grand entrance onto the watchmaking scene: their Manufacture was immediately noted for the quality of its products: complication watches, chronometers and chronographs. Located at the heart of the Neuchatel mountains, the cradle of Swiss precision, it was to receive international acclaim at the World Fairs in Paris (1889), Chicago (1893) and Barcelona (1929). 1947 was a significant milestone in watchmaking history. That was the year Vulcain presented the first genuinely operational mechanical alarm wristwatch. It was equipped with what would become the legendary Cricket calibre. For the very first time, watchmakers and scientists had succeeded in making a mechanical alarm wristwatch loud enough to actually awaken its owner. This period marked the start of a new era. The Cricket watch rapidly established itself and was notably worn by Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson, thus earning it the nickname of “The Presidents’ Watch”. It also accompanied the major mountaineering and maritime expeditions of the 1950s. Attentive watch industry observers duly note that the Manufacture Vulcain has achieved substantial and noteworthy progress since its resurgence in 2002. In addition to various technical advances based on the legendary hand-wound Cricket movement, together with the design, development and production of a new self-winding Cricket alarm movement, the company has also created a balanced and varied collection able to meet the expectations of consumers looking for technical fine watchmaking models beating to the rhythm of finely crafted proprietary movements. In 2009, the watch manufacturer was delighted to pursue a tradition established for over 60 years with the White House, by sending one of its Vulcain Cricket “Anniversary Heart” watches to President Barack Obama. Since 2011, Vulcain has been proudly associated with the Vulcain Trophy organised by the «Association des Multicoques de Compétition» Décision 35. In 2012, the watch manufacturer has established an exclusive partnership with pianist Herbie Hancock. An encounter between two legends, of which the first fruits are two 50s Presidents’ Watch Manual limited editions dedicated to the brilliant musician.

These exclusive models are powered by the legendary V-13 Cricket alarm calibre.

“Grand feu” cloisonné Enamel Technical features Nearly every year, a limited series of models with enameled dials enriches the Vulcain product offering. Among the various types of enamel-work, dials in cloisonné enamel are the hardest to create. But they also ensure the greatest precision of pattern and exceptional colour rendering which will last for ever. The difficulty of this technique lies especially in the meticulous patience required to execute the motifs with fine gold threads – barely thicker than a hair – which mark out the contours of a subject and avoid any colour mixing. After sticking these «cloisons» or partitions on a gold plate, the delicate soldering work on the threads can begin. The artisan then places the enamel gently in each cavity using a goose feather. The enamel artist repeats this operation a great many times in order to achieve optimal chromatic gradation. Then comes the surfacing stage, using a diamond-polished file to smooth out the enamel and the gold threads. To reach the desired quality, each dial requires over a full week of work and up to fifteen firing operations in the kiln heated to 800 degrees Celsius.

Collection The Vulcain legend meets that of Real Madrid. One of the undeniable strengths of the Vulcain marketing strategy lay in an early awareness of the powerful appeal of football – a sport that experienced a wave of expansion in Spanishspeaking countries where the brand was well established in the early 20th century. The association between the watch and an elite group of young sportsmen was a winning partnership, as confirmed in the letter written to Vulcain by Real Madrid coach Francisco Bru: “Our training sessions, calculated using the incredibly precise Vulcain chronometer, have led us to our most categorical win ever in the 1934 Spanish Championship”. That same year, Bru also steered the team to victory in the Spanish Cup. This was the debut of the club’s future president Santiago Bernabéu.

DLC COATING This highly durable, charcoal grey layer with a low friction coefficient consists of an atomic lattice composed of the two forms of carbon: diamond (sp³) and graphite (sp²). Diamondblack™DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is applied using a coating process which faithfully mirrors the original surface finishes. Diamondblack™DLC consists solely of molecules of carbon and hydrogen arranged in a structure similar to that of diamond, producing a layer with excellent chemical stability and high corrosion resistance. Its proven biocompatibility enables prolonged contact with the skin without causing irritation. It has a very high level of hardness, around 5,000 Vickers, compared to stainless steel, approximately 200 Vickers. This high-tech coating is used in the aerospace industry and in any application in which wear-resistance and a low friction coefficient are essential.

Produced in a 100-piece limited series – three of which were presented to the skippers who reached the podium of the Vulcain Trophy 2011 – this limited edition is distinguished by a resolutely different design. The case featuring alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces, is topped by an unusual bezel adorned with the “Clou de Paris” hobnail pattern. The triple case-back – which enhances the sound and also means the alarm can be used under water – is engraved with the inscription “Vulcain Trophy 2011”, a depiction of the Decision 35 boat, as well as the individual number from 1/100 to 100/100 allocated to each watch. Manufacture Vulcain - Exactomatic CALIBRE VULCAIN CRICKET - EXACTOMATIC The Cricket calibre is also related to another axclusive development by the Manufacture Vulcain, an innovation patented in 1946 as the Exactomatic. The purpose of the Exactomatic principle is to equalise the friction on the balance-wheel axis in all positions by modifying the Incabloc endstones. This provides a more regular amplitude. So the Exactomatic principle provides greater accuracy a better regularity in the operation of the watch while it is being worm. This sparked even greater interest by connoisseurs in all of Vulcain’s calibres.
