A word from the CEO In 1858, the Ditisheim brothers founded what would become the Manufacture des Montres Vulcain in the Neuchâtel mountains. With more than 150 years of history and innovation behind us, our brand is now an integral part of the international watchmaking landscape. It is our duty to ensure this expertise and heritage lives on. A financial expert and fine watch enthusiast of many years standing, it was when I delved into the history of Vulcain that I became convinced of this Swiss family company’s potential to stand the test of time.

Convinced of this potential, my interest in this watch Manufacture grew from 2008 until 2010, when I was finally able to purchase it. Because, whilst surrounded by all these huge watch groups, Vulcain remains a true manufacture, developing its own Cricket movements and assembling its own timepieces at its premises in Le Locle. In terms of legitimacy, it has nothing left to prove! It would be wrong, however, to reduce its history to the invention of the first wristwatch alarm complication alone. In fact, the brand’s history began more than 90 years before the discovery of the «Cricket», and it has produced a vast array of different models since its inception, winning countless prizes and awards. With this heritage, which includes «The Presidents’ Watch», the chance to write the next few chapters in this incredible story is a challenge that I meet every day with the greatest delight.

Dr. Renato A. Vanotti, CEO Manufacture des Montres Vulcain SA

History In 1858, the Ditisheim brothers made a grand entrance onto the watchmaking scene: their Manufacture was immediately noted for the quality of its products: complication watches, chronometers and chronographs. Located at the heart of the Neuchatel mountains, the cradle of Swiss precision, it was to receive international acclaim at the World Fairs in Paris (1889), Chicago (1893) and Barcelona (1929). 1947 was a significant milestone in watchmaking history. That was the year Vulcain presented the first genuinely operational mechanical alarm wristwatch. It was equipped with what would become the legendary Cricket calibre. For the very first time, watchmakers and scientists had succeeded in making a mechanical alarm wristwatch loud enough to actually awaken its owner. This period marked the start of a new era. The Cricket watch rapidly established itself and was notably worn by Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson, thus earning it the nickname of «The Presidents’ Watch». It also accompanied the major mountaineering and maritime expeditions of the 1950s. Since its resurgence in 2002, the Vulcain manufacture, through its well-balanced and varied collection, has met the expectations of consumers seeking technically-accomplished haute horlogerie pieces, with a manufacture movement beating at their heart, in particular by developing its new self-winding Cricket alarm movement. In 2009, the watch Manufacture had the immense pleasure of renewing its link with the White House, in line with a tradition dating back more than 60 years, when it presented President Barack Obama with an «Anniversary Heart» Vulcain Cricket watch. In 2012, the watch Manufacture entered an exclusive partnership with the pianist Herbie Hancock. A meeting between two legends, the first result of which was the creation of two 50s Presidents’ Watch Manual models, limited editions dedicated to this gifted pianist. In 2013, after a period spent on the fringes of Baselworld, Manufacture Vulcain made its grand comeback at the prestigious trade show by presenting its latest creations in a setting worthy of «The Presidents’ Watch». 2014 marked a turning point in the Manufacture’s development. In parallel with its classic and iconic models, Vulcain has decided to launch its new «First Lady Automatic» women’s model as an exclusive at Baselworld 2014, alongside an exceptional piece, its new Tourbillon, both of which once more demonstrate the brand’s ambition and dynamism.

50s Presidents’ Chronograph Heritage Limited Edition The Vulcain legend meets that of Real Madrid. One of the undeniable strengths of the Vulcain marketing strategy lay in an early awareness of the powerful appeal of football – a sport that experienced a wave of expansion in Spanishspeaking countries where the brand was well established in the early 20th century. The association between the watch and an elite group of young sportsmen was a winning partnership, as confirmed in the letter written to Vulcain by Real Madrid coach Francisco Bru: “Our training sessions, calculated using the incredibly precise Vulcain chronometer, have led us to our most categorical win ever in the 1934 Spanish Championship”. That same year, Bru also steered the team to victory in the Spanish Cup. This was the debut of the club’s future president Santiago Bernabéu.
