DUTCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Welcome to VU-NT2, where you can learn Dutch at all levels. You can join us for a course that suits your personal ability and ambition, either in the evening or during the day. Students are grouped according to their level of Dutch and together you will work on your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. You will expand your vocabulary and knowledge of grammar. You will increase your chances of passing the State Exam I or II with the help of the exam training programme scheduled immediately after the courses. We will also introduce you to Dutch culture, society and traditions. You will learn the language skills you need to get ahead in Dutch society. VU-NT2 consultation hours Every Monday and Thursday from 15.0016.30 hrs in the main building of the VU University Amsterdam (room 8A-41). An appointment is not needed.
DAY COURSES General information all courses • After taking an entry exam to establish your level, you can join at any level from absolute beginner up to CEFR-level B1 or B2. • Testing take place at the end of each course period. If you pass the test, you can graduate to the next level. • Every level starts four times a year, allowing you to join classes soon. You are free to determine how many courses you would like to take and what level you want to achieve. • Courses go ahead if enough students apply. DUTCH FOR STATE EXAM I (REGULAR) A course for those who would like to learn Dutch at a regular pace. You will be closely supervised by a teacher. The course will prepare you for NT2 State Exam programme I (SE I). In four periods you will go from CEFR-level 0 to B1. You will understand the most important issues in standard texts about daily life topics. You will be able to have conversations and write simple texts. Course

DUTCH FOR STATE EXAM II (INTENSIVE) A course for those intending to work or study at college or university level. The pace of the lessons is fast. This course will prepare you for NT2 State Exam programme II (SE II). In four periods you will go from CEFR-level 0 to B2. You will be able to speak Dutch easily, understand difficult texts, write clearly and in detail about a range of topics and to discuss and defend your opinions. Course

EVENING COURSES DUTCH FOR WORK AND STUDIES (EXTENSIVE) A course for professionals and students working at a high level (college or university) in the Netherlands who have little time to learn the Dutch language. You are looking for a practical course in the evening with few assignments. This course will take you to CEFRlevel B2 in six periods. At this level you can speak Dutch easily and understand difficult texts. You will be able to write clearly about a range of topics. Course

DUTCH FOR WORK AND STUDIES (FAST) Your first language is German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian or Afrikaans, allowing you to pick up the language at a fast pace. You are working or studying in the Netherlands at a high level (college or university). This course will take you to CEFR-level B2 in three periods. Course

NEW: EVENING COURSE DAILY DUTCH (SHORT) You are temporarily working or studying in the Netherlands. Being able to speak Dutch is not a necessity, but you would like to have conversations with colleagues or fellow students and be able to shop, order a beer, edit your status on Facebook and Skype in Dutch. In short, you would like to learn Dutch for everyday purposes. In eight weeks you will reach CEFR-level A1. You will be able to use general expressions and form basic sentences. You will also learn about Dutch culture. After Daily Dutch you can go on to evening course AE2. Practical information (per level) Course dates

REGISTRATION AND APPLICATION Do you have the required level of education? Anyone who has completed a secondary education (comparable to Dutch havo/vwo in the Netherlands) is welcome. If you don’t speak any Dutch at all, some knowledge of the English language is necessary. Step 1A: Application for a DAY COURSE. • Please visit www.nt2.vu.nl and fill out the application form. • Please also come to the VU-NT2 consultation hours (please check practical information). You do not need to make an appointment. We will discuss what course is suitable for you and determine whether or not you need to take an intake test (please check step 2). Step 1B: Application for an EVENING COURSE. • Please visit www.nt2.vu.nl and fill out the application form. • Or come to the VU-NT2 consultation hours (please check practical information). You do not need to make an appointment. To register, please bring some ID and take along any relevant copies of documents such as high school diplomas or certificates from your last Dutch course or a student card. Step 2: The intake test. An intake test will determine your level and help us find a suitable course for you. This does not apply to applicants with CEFR-level 0. Step 3: We send you an official invitation and ask for a payment. After registering, we will send you an official invitation. We will mention what level you have been placed in, when you will start, how to pay and what course material to order. Step 4: Your placement is finalized! Once we have received your payment, your registration is finalized (unless the groups are full, in that case you are put on a waiting list).
