Amsterdam is a great place to go for studies abroad “I graduated from the Master’s in Political Science. Amsterdam is a great place to go for studies abroad. It is a vibrant and cultural city where history and modernity meet. As a VU student you can meet and interact with people from all over the world, giving you a truly valuable life experience in a multi-cultural setting. During my Bachelor’s studies in my home country of Romania, I really wanted to enroll in a Master’s programme in the West. Looking back, I can say that VU University Amsterdam was the right choice. The studies are challenging, the pace is intense. For me, the Master’s programme was decisive in terms of enhancing my creative and critical powers of cognition. I certainly developed analytical abilities that now prove invaluable to me in my current position as a diplomat. My experience as a VU student has enriched my personal and professional development. I have fantastic memories of my days at VU University Amsterdam. I’m still in touch with my fellow students and we get together whenever we can. I also really enjoyed getting to know Amsterdam and its environs by bicycle, and the student concerts at the Conservatorium were a true delight.” Sava Diamandi from Romania

Ecology Ecology is about understanding how nature works, both as an aim in itself and with a view to maintaining biodiversity and combating the effects of pollution and climate change. In this respect, the Master’s in Ecology at VU University Amsterdam is unique: we study ecology from a plant, animal and systems perspective. In determining ecological properties, we operate from the molecular level – looking at which genes trigger responses to environmental stress – up to the regional scale, using field observations to identify ecosystems’ patterns and functions.

Your programme In this two-year programme you will spend the first four months on coursework. The remainder of each year is spent on a literature survey and a research project. Half of the courses are compulsory, while the other half consists of electives. You will select your own research topics.

You can choose between two specializations; • Ecology and Evolution: You will understand how nature works, both as an aim in itself and with a view to maintaining biodiversity and to combating the effects of pollution and climate change. • Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology: This track deals with the sources and fate of chemicals, as well as their environmental effect on wildlife and human health. Your future career Fifty percent of our students pursue their studies at PhD level. Others opt for a career in consultancy or applied environmental sciences, where they deal with topics such as nature management, landscape planning and the development of molecular tools to assess pollution, improve food quality or help identify alternative energy sources. Some of our graduates work in policy preparation for government, water boards or NGOs. Specific admission requirements You can be admitted if you have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. If you have a Bachelor’s degree in another subject, the Examination Board will decide whether you can be admitted and will set additional requirements, if necessary. Social and Cultural Anthropology This is a small-scale, personal and intensive programme in anthropology and human security. You will explore the multiple dimensions of human security and insecurity (e.g. economic, socio-cultural, political), dimensions that are sometimes entangled in contradictory ways. Your focus will be on people’s attempts to achieve material, physical and emotional security, and on how these often clash and create new insecurities. During the programme, you will deal with various aspects and manifestations of human security and insecurity, such as livelihood, risk-taking, sustainable development, migration and belonging, and religion and security.

Your programme The programme begins with a comprehensive theoretical orientation on human security. Halfway you will specialize in one of two profiles: •C onstructing Identities and Notions of Belonging: examines the ways in which people form imagined, ritualistic or face-to-face communities to shield themselves from feelings of anxiety, fear, risk, threat, alienation and exile. The central issues are migration, community construction, identity politics, violence and the pursuit of religious certainty.

• Development and Social Transformations: you will learn about the physical but culturally entangled aspects of human security, tackling issues including natural resource management, poverty and sustainable development, dispute resolution, gender issues, forced migration and international peacekeeping. In both profiles, you will learn to analyse concrete issues of cultural diversity, social complexity, international inequality and development using anthropological theories and concepts. In the second semester, you will conduct fieldwork research for your thesis in your country of choice for approximately three months. Your future career The labour market has varied possibilities for anthropologists: policy or management positions in companies, government organizations and NGOs. Jobs in governmental organizations in the social service field or as a communication and organization advisor are suitable positions.
