SO MANY WAYS TO
enjoy the bay The calming flow of the Chesapeake Bay invites veteran and novice seafarers alike to dive right in and explain the northern coast of Virginia Beach. With a variety of ways to enjoy the swell, a day on the Bay is a must-try for all visitors. Just pick your vessel and start drifting. SUP (STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD)
For a challenging yet relaxing experience, test your balance on a stand-up paddleboard; a favorite among Chic’s Beach regulars. You can bring your pup aboard for some pet-friendly fun and even take your yoga practice to the next level with a SUP barre or yoga session. Checkout your equipment from one of the local outfitters and let the adventure begin. BOAT
There may not be a more traditional way to experience the largest natural estuary in the United States than by getting out and exploring it by boat, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less fun. Head out early for a day of reeling in flounder or stay out later for a leisurely sunset cruise.
BODY
Whether boogie-boarding, body surfing, or good old-fashioned swimming, the calmer waves of the Bay make it the perfect place to spend a day splashing around and just enjoying the water. KAYAK
It doesn’t get more Virginia Beach than paddling out to the legendary Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to fish like the locals do, or just simply exploring the water by skimming right through it. With many outfitters available, like Tula Adventure Sports launching out of the Lynnhaven River, renting a kayak will get you in the water in no time.
QUICK TIP! When driving south to Virginia Beach, there may not be a more scenic entryway in the country than the world-renowned Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which connects Virginia Beach with the Delmarva Peninsula over the Chesapeake Bay.

America’s First Lighthouse: THE STORY OF THE CAPE HENRY LIGHTHOUSE
When you look at a lighthouse, what do you see? Perhaps to you, lighthouses spark memories of a family vacation to the shore or elicit seafaring imagery that could be ripped from the pages of a Herman Melville novel. While lighthouses are still utilized in many capes and inlets across the world, they have turned into somewhat of a novelty for many—a relic of days past. But these lighthouses hold within them more than steel, brick and glass. Each flame that flickered through the thick windows signaled something different to everyone who saw it. Safe passage into harbor. A new beginning. The end of a journey. Home. This story begins, surprisingly enough, not on the shores where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, but in New York City’s Federal Hall, in 1789. The newly formed United States of America, still recovering from the destruction of revolution, was holding its first session of the First United States Congress. It was during this historic session that Jacob Wray, the collector of customs at Hampton, made a plea to the newly-appointed Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, that the unlit shores of Cape Henry, which had 48
Things To Do
claimed 57 maritime vessels, needed to be promptly addressed. Hamilton heeded the call by contracting the project with John McComb, Jr. As the tower neared completion, President Washington hand-selected the new lighthouse keeper. In late October, 1792, Laban Goffigan of Norfolk lit the fish oil-burning lamps of the new Cape Henry Lighthouse for the first time. The completion of the Cape Henry Lighthouse marked the first federal work project of the new United States government to be fulfilled. Though a new lighthouse, which is still in use, was built adjacent to it in 1881, the old Cape Henry Lighthouse still stands as a reminder of Virginia Beach’s historic past. Today, you can gain access to the lighthouse, which sits on the active Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, and climb the winding metal staircase all the way to the top, adding to the revered legend’s story, one step at a time. For gate entry requirements, please see the Cape Henry Lighthouse section on PreservationVirginia.org.
“The rocky ledge runs far into the sea, And on its outer point, some miles away, The Lighthouse lifts its massive masonry, A pillar of fire by night, of cloud by day.
Even at this distance I can see the tides, Upheaving, break unheard along its base, A speechless wrath, that rises and subsides In the white lip and tremor of the face. And as the evening darkens, lo! how bright, Through the deep purple of the twilight air, Beams forth the sudden radiance of its light With strange, unearthly splendor in the glare! Not one alone; from each projecting cape And perilous reef along the ocean's verge, Starts into life a dim, gigantic shape, Holding its lantern o'er the restless surge. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Lighthouse

Explore OUR PARKS
Whether you’re into invigorating hikes, adventurous trails or breathtakingly scenic routes, our state parks, wildlife refuges and miles of beaches are sure to have you craving the great outdoors. At First Landing State Park, you can hike through seven distinct ecosystems like a seasoned explorer! In fact, this registered Natural Landmark was the site of the settlers’ first landing in 1607 and has since become Virginia’s most visited state park. Walk along 1.25 miles of beach and stop to take in the beauty of dunes, tidal marsh and the maritime forest, or follow 19 miles of interpretive hiking, running and biking trails through protected habitats, including one of the most endangered habitat types in the world, the maritime forest community. Along each trail within the 2,888-acre park, you’ll encounter a different scene, from freshwater ponds and Spanish moss to stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay.

Farther south in Sandbridge Beach, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge provides incredible scenic hikes along several trails through dunes, woodland, marshes and ocean beaches. Given its remote location, the park has become a haven for loggerhead sea turtles, peregrine falcons and bald eagles, all of which you’ll have the opportunity to encounter as you explore the 9,108-acre refuge – a local favorite! Feeling extra adventurous? Hike through the refuge to reach False Cape State Park, accessible only by foot or by boat. Featuring six miles of pristine beaches, False Cape is a wildlife watcher’s delight and a destination for more than 300 species of birds, including a snow geese population of 10,000.
GOLF In addition to Top Golf, there are more than 170 holes of golf in Virginia Beach, each with their own distinct personality. Virginia Beach offers several municipal courses as well as courses built by the games’ best architects and players including Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. We asked local golf experts for their favorite holes in the region: Hole #14, Red Wing (Par 5, 539 yards) Hole #5, Nicklaus Course at Bay Creek- “Old Plantation Light” (Par 4, 459 yards) Hole #3, Palmer Course at Bay Creek, “Allegood Pond” (Par 4, 460 yards) Hole #8, Palmer Course at Signature at West Neck, “Vicki’s Choice” (Par 4, 409 yards) Hole #9, Heron Ridge (Par 5, 409 yards) Hole #17, Honey Bee Golf Club (Par 4, 399 yards) Hole #13, Hell’s Point Golf Club (Par 4, 399 yards) To learn more about our golf game, go to VisitVirginiaBeach.com/golf or see our listings on page 81.

Active Lifestyle
BEACH CRUISER Location: Inland/Red Mill Tip: Using sidewalks, dine around daytime by bike through Red Mill Commons or head to Green Flash Brewery.
TIME TRIAL BIKE Location: Pungo Tip: A 50-mile, flat bike loop on country roads is perfect for interval training. Test your small gear climbing skills on Pungo Ferry Bridge... if you dare.
MOUNTAIN OR CYCLOCROSS BIKE Location: First Landing State Park Tip: Be on alert for soft sand, occasional tree roots and friendly hikers and runners on Cape Henry Trail. Share the trail!
FAT TIRE BIKE Location: False Cape State Park Tip: Low tide is the best for riding on compact sand.
ROAD BIKE Location: Inland/Surrounding Areas Tip: Don’t try this alone: friendly Saturday group rides are a must with rides for all paces. Take some cash for a post-ride coffee shop party.
SURREY BIKE Location: Oceanfront Tip: With a dedicated bike lane, surreys are meant to be shared with your closest family and friends. VisitVirginiaBeach.com

JUST
chill Life moves quickly. With phone calls to answer, meetings to attend and emails to write, sometimes it seems impossible to put life on hold and get away from it all. The faster the train is moving, however, the more important it is to get off from time to time and explore the world outside the tracks. With an abundance of opportunities to unplug, unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Virginia Beach takes relaxation seriously. • Practice your sunrise salutations with an invigorating session of yoga on the beach - while taking in the wonders of a sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean.
• Cleanse and balance your body with the Deep Forest Detox at the Flowering Almond Spa at Founders Inn, which begins with a soothing 80-minute hot stone massage with detoxifying oil infused with notes of balsam, fir, pine, juniper and laced with Sicilian bergamot. • Drift down the calming waters of Back Bay Wildlife Refuge on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard.
• Let the swell of the ocean set the soundtrack for your day at the beach, with nothing to do but soak in the sun, read a good book, catch up on some muchneeded rest and relaxation. • Try a locally-brewed beer at one of our resident breweries or sit by the pool and sip on an Orange Crush - a local favorite. • Take a stroll beneath the towering bald cypress trees and windswept Spanish moss of First Landing State Park.
• Experience the full color palette of a sunset over the Chesapeake Bay.

Coastal Cuisine
WHAT IS COASTAL CUISINE? In our region, salt water and brackish water are home to an amazing array of sea life. Soil is sandy and loamy and perfect for growing many edible treasures. Those dynamics come together to craft a unique coastal cuisine – some of it old, some of it new. Our culinary way of life is centered around seafood... but not exclusively. The main hallmarks of our coastal cuisine are fresh, seasonal, and simply prepared ingredients, often sourced from our own rich farmlands, which create a sense of place and palate.

PICK-YOUR-OWN FARMS Our Pungo community is a dynamic part of our beach culture. With 16 pick-yourown farms located just a short drive from the beach, you can pick your own bushel of fresh berries, produce, or even a bouquet of wildflowers and be back at the beach by dinner. FARM-TO-TABLE The best food is also the freshest food, and no one takes that sentiment to heart like we do in Virginia Beach. With the agricultural farming community of Pungo right in our backyard, fresh produce is as essential to our way of life as fresh seafood. With delicious ingredients that are as fresh as they get, our farm-to-table eateries are as good for the body as they are for the belly.

OYSTERS Once coveted by the English aristocracy for its size and salinity, the famous Lynnhaven Oyster is a local legend that we can’t get enough of, no matter the season. Captain John Smith himself described the bounty of the area saying “oysters lay as thick as stones,” with the Bay and rivers containing more sturgeon “than could be devoured by dog or man.” There may not be the numbers there were in Smith’s day, but the local oyster population is on the rise and we are all better for it. Hop aboard a boat tour and taste an oyster plucked straight from the water beneath you, or order them how you like from one of our area’s many restaurants who feature our favorite bivalve.

SHE-CRAB SOUP She-crab soup is a staple of our coastal cuisine here in Virginia Beach. From the Annual She-Crab Soup Festival to the numerous local restaurants featuring it on their menu, this dish is everywhere—and for good reason. Enjoy this she-crab soup recipe below from Chef Mel Cliborne of Rockafeller’s Restaurant at Rudee Inlet. INGREDIENTS
4 qts half and half
2 tbsp Old Bay
½ lbs butter
½ tbsp Worcestershire
½ cup chopped fresh mushrooms
1 tbsp Texas Pete
1 cup dry sherry
1 ½ cup cornstarch
8 oz clam base (paste) 1 cup water
2 cups hot tap water 2 lbs backfin crab meat
INSTRUCTIONS • In an 10 qt soup pot, melt the butter, add the mushrooms and cook over low heat until done—about 5 minutes. • Add clam base, sherry, Worcestershire, Old Bay,1 cup water, and Texas Pete. Raise heat to medium, stir with a whisk and cook until slightly bubbling and clam base is dissolved. • Add the half and half, whisking constantly so as not to scorch. • When the mixture in the pot reaches 190 degrees, mix the cornstarch and hot water. (If you do not have an instant thermometer, when it starts to bubble it is ready). • Add cornstarch and water to pot. It should thicken quickly. Make sure the mixture is hot enough or it will not thicken. Turn the heat off once the mixture thickens. • Adjust seasonings. Some people prefer more Old Bay or Texas Pete, some less. • When you are satisfied with your result, add the crab meat and mix thoroughly. Tips from Chef Mel: This is a guideline. Put what you like in this soup; substitute lobster base or shrimp base, add jumbo lump crab meat instead of lump, lobster instead of crab. Also keep in mind soup is better the second day after it is refrigerated and reheated. If the soup becomes too thick, thin it with half and half. If serving the same day, let stand for a couple of hours and then reheat. This makes about 7 quarts. For a smaller batch, cut the measurements in half. I don’t suggest anything smaller than a half batch. VisitVirginiaBeach.com

Va beach craft beers With the changing of each season, there are few things we look forward to as much as our favorite seasonal craft beer being back on draught at our local breweries! While there are ample options to quench the thirst of every beer lover, here are some staples that we look forward to each year. SUMMER: PINEAPPLE GRENADE HEFEWEIZEN Young Veterans Brewing Company This refreshing beer adds a tropical twist to a summertime classic. With a hint of tangy pineapple complementing the usual wheat edge of a Hefeweizen, the Pineapple Grenade Hefeweizen is the perfect complement to soaking up the east coast sun.
FALL: WITCH OF PUNGO BEER Back Bay Brewing Company Light to medium bodied, and easy to drink, this delicious pumpkin ale makes for a perfect sidekick to all of your fall festivities. WINTER: EGGNOG RIOT Commonwealth Brewing Company The Eggnog Riot Bourbon Barrel Imperial Cream Ale might just get our vote for the best holiday beer in town. This delicious play on the traditional eggnog and bourbon cocktail is easy to drink and will get you in the holiday spirit.
SPRING: NOUVEAU TARTE Green Flash Brewing As part of the Cellar 3 Reserve Series, Green Flash’s Nouveau Tarte is given a layer of complexity during its extended aging in wood barrels. Dark fruit flavors and a subtle hint of malt blend together for an extremely satisfying sour beer. VisitVirginiaBeach.com

A YEAR-ROUND DESTINATION With “Beach” in our name, long, hot days spent soaking in the sun and surf between Memorial Day and Labor Day might be the first thing that comes to mind when planning a trip to our seaside city. While our pristine beaches and abundant natural waterways make us an ideal summer destination, the fun doesn’t stop when the days grow shorter. In fact, it is in the cooler months that much of our coastal culture truly comes alive. With year-round mild temperatures, ample winter wildlife adventures, seasonal coastal cuisine, and a decidedly more “local” vibe, you can live the life in Virginia Beach year-round.

There's more than one way to get to Atlantic Avenue and the oceanfront. To avoid traffic congestion, we suggest the Birdneck Road, 22E, exit off Interstate 264. Convenient street signs are displayed at the bottom of the exit ramp and will direct you to your desired Atlantic Avenue destination.
