WHY NOT Architectural Portfolio is the 3rd series of the architectural exploration of by the author in his journey that includes education as well as practices. The series started with the first book FOUR WALLS & A ROOF(2015) that inspired by the quote posed by Reiner De Graf “Why did you study so intensively for so long? Isn’t architecture basically four walls and a roof?” in an article in 2014. This was followed by a 404 (2017) that attempt to celebrate errors discovered by questioning, in the hope to opens new perspective to the ideas. Now in 2023, WHY NOT attempt to conceptualize thoughts develop by the author into series of projects that challenges conventional design strategies into new typologies.

To built or not to build?”

From the School-To-Work Transition Survey (SWTS) of Young Malaysians report by Khazanah Research Insitute(KRI), makerspace has been proposed to address the lack of interest among the younger generation for STEM subjects. The report pointed out there is growing interest for the education ministry around the world to integrate arts in STEM education, creating a new STEAM education model.

SITE

KL for its creative people

The site is a former French embassy which later sold to Putrajaya Ventures Sdn Bhd(PVSB) since 2014. Due to the sluggish property market, the development for the site was frozen until PVSB find suitable partner for the new development. Hence, a makerspace thats utilise Designed for Manufacturing and Assembly(DFMA) was propose for the site to capitalize on its potential value in enhancing future human capital for neighbourhood and Greater KL. Its location in the centre of KL and nearby major transport node makes it a strategic location for KL Makerspace.

MAKER’S PARK

Rather than using the architecture to attrach the public, half of the site is given back by dedicating it as Maker’s Park. This enable the development to attract to wider spectrum of general public to frequent the site once its completed.

maker _ SCAPE

maker _ PLACE

A PLACE for all MAKERS.

As the program have limited size, half of the site will be left under utilised for future development. Maker’s Park will use this as an opportunity to attract the public by offering public programs such as skatepark, playground, transquil garden, splash pool and etc. Maker’s Park will be accessible to Damai, Keramat and Taman U-Thant community as well patron of the Makerscape.

Program as Connection | CIRCUIT

As the site is connected to 2 major public transport nodes while also being in close proximity to both residential zone as well as high-value commercial zone, the proposal attempt to utilize the landscape and hardscape as connection system linking all the different programs to its surrounding context.

The space is separated into zones for human and mechanical as well as nonhuman counterparts. Services is transferred vertically through the integrated column design to minize visual cluttering.

M&E Zoning

Utilising the grid from the structural system, the lighting and HVAC system is distributed evenly throughout the space.

Creating Elevation | CONTEXT

Using the building roof, additional recreational area is created utilizing roof garden. This aims to invite people to climb on top of the building, giving an overview towards the surrounding context, creating conversation as well as observation and relaxation zone.

Sustainability through ENGINEERING ECOLOGY

Rather than using conventional rooftop garden which require deep soil depth for landscape, the roofpark utilize modular pod that can be interchangable over time. The modular pod act can be design to house 1m soil depth for larger plants, or shallower soil depth for flower/herbs garden. The modular pod can also be designed for seating and playscape.

Why

One of the key aspect of the design was how to bring normal horizontal movement to a vertical habitat. With the brief requiring a smaller office distribution due to post-pandemic concern and the program that require physical separation from public and private, the design development focus on creating distint programmatic components overlap vertically creating instances for visual interaction.

The first components of the development is a show unit for Renault’s Automobile. The show unit is placed on the LG level coonecting to Jalan Kemajuan. The 2-storey showroom will serve public who are interested in getting to know Renault’s car. The back area is dedicated fto servies and parkings. A internal courtyard is placed in the centrre to allow connection to the GF

Urban Plaza will be the main focus on the GF layout, with the tower components lifted up to the skylobby. The urban plaza will serve as social attractor to the general public with outdoor showroom as well as Renault Robo-vehicle test circuit encircling it. This is encourage the public to learn more about Renault’s vision of Future Mobility and training programs. Additional programs such as Cafe and retail are inserted to compliment the urban plaza

POST-PANDEMIC OFFICE STRATEGY PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES

Operable Panel to allow natural ventilation to the atrium space

Main staircase connecting different floor without usage of lift

Double services and amenities space to reduce congestion

Essential worker who require physical presence in office will be stationed in private pods

Post Pandemic Office focus on de-densifying with hotdesking and staggered working hour and mobile furniture

Dual office unit at each floor allow for easier controlled incase of an outbreak.

Curtain facade with operable kinetic facade to allow daylight penetration control

Double Lift and Lobby For one-way circulation

The atrium pulls hot air from the office and discharge it to outside and to the top as the hot air rises. As wind at high altitude have high velocity, it is more efficient to allow the office to open to the internal atrium with a more controlled environment.

Controlled access point in atrium space as sanitizing zone

Smaller balcony at each floor avoid large congregation at a single green space.

TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN

The tower is design to have more perimeter surface, daylight penetration into the office area is increased with only the less occupied interior part required additional lighting.

DESIGN APPROACH

From the initial design phase, economic viability was a key consideration in the design process. In creating a robust and adaptable framework, the design utilise 6m grid a as opposed to the industry standard 8.4m grid. This was achieved through making the housing block independant from the parking units, adaptable to different site condition.

ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY

The alternating corridor create less wastage in circulation space, allowing higher floor efficiency in the scheme.

CPTED

The triple volumn corridor increases natural survelience in the inner space, increasing safety for kids and elderly.

SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

The alternating corridor at every 3 levels create luxurious spatial experience inside the corridor, as oppose to cramp and dark corridor of a typical housig block. This inturns allow the corridor to become a social hardware for the community.

The parking podium becomes an additional program based on the project requirement. The hybrid typology is well-fitted in a future car-less development that focus on public transport and publci spaces.

As the tower typology can be replicated at any site, the size off the podium can be expand or reduced to meet current or future parking code.

Split level parking block stack diagonally allowed for least minimum space wastaega for ramp usage. Scissor-type diagonal accesnding typology have oppotunity to host progarms above and below the parking block.

Exising Bazaria is replaced by F&B Centre punching throught he parking block at ground level, creating connectivity between the east and west area.

The triple volumn corridor plays a keyrole in creating a holistic and engaging community. By having windoes and opening facing both the view externally and internal corridor, more social engagement will occur as part of the instilling neighbourhood conversation.

RESILIENT THROUGH VERNACULARISM

SuperKampong aims to predict a framework of growth of Kampung Baru through resilient city model that can better prepare it for future growth. By using the principle of incremental growth, SuperKampong tries to provide a template for the existing inhabitatns to grow organiscally, responding to desired needs.

A layered development that offer a more parallel growt between the infrastructure and the social factor is used as the foundation of SuperKampong. Using the principle of incremental growth, SuperKampong propose a system where housed can be stacked on top of another.
