EUGE GROOVE

TAMMY WEIS CELEBRATES JULIE LONDON
Original retro funk and soul with a modern twist from 8 piece band Crowd Company, considered one of the UK leading bands of the genre. Brimful of energy with a raw edge, catchy hooks, and tight grooves. The band has a finely tuned sound based around retro funk grooves with a soulful edge. The band combine a Hammond organ based sound with a virtuoso horn section, soulful lead and harmony vocals. The band evokes the spirit of 60s and early 70s funk as well as modern day funk jam bands whilst also focusing on strong soulful songwriting.
Former Tower Of Power, Tina Turner and Richard Marx saxman Euge Groove's funky brand of smooth jazz is a favourite with every audience he plays for, and gets people up and dancing. This year is guaranteed to be just as entertaining and exhilarating, as he brings his show to The Maidstone Music Room for the fourth year running, after three years of complete sell outs.
Julie London was noted for her languid demeanour and a sensual voice which connoisseurs described variously as husky, breathy, haunting, intimate and even "a voice for a smoke-filled room". She was able to convey the heights of love and passion and the depths of sadness and isolation in every note she sang. London has been an inspiration to many singers around the Globe including Tammy Weis. Tammy is a critically acclaimed Anglo-Canadian singer who has performed on TV and Radio stations across Canada and Europe, and has performed with Michael Buble, Jamie Cullum, Bobby McFerrin and Randy Bachman to name just a few.

Dickens World The Grand Tour Welcome to the Grand Tour, this interactive guided experience that will take you back in time. Our professional, performing arts, tour guides will take you on a journey of discovery, bringing to life, the most affecting and colourful characters; in this powerful and at times hilariously funny exposĂŠ of Dickens' works.
Peggotty's Cinema Show
The tour starts off with Peggotty's Boathouse, made famous in the novel David Copperfield. Here you will be introduced to Dickens' life and travels throughout Europe and America.
Old Green Copper Rope Bridge
You are then immersed in the sights and sounds from the scenes of Victorian London. Walk across the rope bridges and travel the footsteps back in time to our Victorian themed courtyard. Explore Collards Greengrocers, this shop really did exist and was originally situated in North Street, just up the road from Dickens' favourite pub in Rochester. Here you will learn about the different social classes within the Victorian era's very structured society. Just next door you will enter the Barbers Shop; the backstreet Barbers were a feature of everyday life. Here you will be able to see how a Victorian Barber shop looked back in the day. Moving on you will enter the River Walk. Here you will be told about nasty Jack the Ripper. Then enter the Marshalsea Prison. The Marshalsea was a debtor's prison. In Victorian times, if the bread winner of the family ended up here, their families would have to join them in the prison; the bread winner would stay locked up whilst their family went out to earn money in order to pay off the debt. Dickens' father, John Dickens, was sent here when Charles was just a young boy.
Marshalsea Debtors Prison
Once you have been freed from the Marshalsea Prison you will need to hurry back into the courtyard... for the very miserable and abusive school Head Master will be awaiting your arrival. Here you will enter Dotheboy's Hall where your Victorian lesson will begin.
Haunted Man
When class is dismissed you will then enter the Haunted Man. This area of Dickens World is dark and sinister but you must be bold and go inside as the house features some of the most creepy and memorable characters that Charles Dickens wrote about. The voice of Charles Dickens' great grandson, Gerald Dickens will introduce you to a whole host of spooky holographs also known as "pepper's ghosts", an invention of the period used to create ghostly illusions.

SLEEPING BEAUTY
5
The Britannia Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty, a classic tale of good versus evil in a funfilled production of music, magic and mayhem. Ashford budding actress/singer, Ellie Fiore has won a professional contract to appear in the Dickens World Pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, alongside The Voice Finalist Jamie Johnson over the Festive period. The producers of Frozen Fairytale Pantomimes’ Sleeping Beauty – were on the look-out for a talented young actress from Kent to play the part of Aurora and as luck would have it, Ellie, currently touring the UK with Channel 5’s Milkshake Live! Party Party, was able to apply due to a break in production. The show’s producers said Ellie was everything they wanted for the part. “We were looking for someone who the children would warm to, who could sing and act fantastically and also looked like a princess and Ellie ticked all the boxes” said Pantomime director Russ Spencer “For a lot of children pantomime is their first introduction to live theatre so it’s really important we make it a magical and exciting experience for them.” Ellie appears alongside The Voice finalist Jamie Johnson, who plays the Prince and Mr Baffled, and Jade from TV’s Go!Go!Go! Sleeping Beauty – The Frozen Fairytale Pantomime is at The Britannia Theatre, Dickens World, Chatham from December 9 to January 4. And is a Britannia Theatre & Ten 98 Entertainment production. Yoko Ono, former wife of the Beatles legend John Lennon chose The Grand as her venue of choice for her Folkestone Triennial piece entitled “Earth Peace” which consists of a large light spelling out the title in morse code at the very summit of the building. Our menu carries several favourites from The Grand Burger to Halloumi & Cous Cous, Grand Ale battered Fish and Chips or the ever popular Grand-Club Sandwich. WINTER DIPPERS MAKE A SPLASH ON BOXING DAY. For one hour every year on Boxing Day, hundreds of normally sensible members of local communities go totally insane and run into the sea regardless of how cold it is... and some of them even dress up for the occasion !! The method behind their madness though, is the raising of thousands of £’s for various charities. The “Dippers” are sponsored by friends and family for their lemming like dash into the sea and at the Folkestone event, Folkestone Lions pass the monies raised onto the charities nominated Batman & Robin ready to take the by the dippers themselves. plunge Each of the dippers gets a Hot Toddy and a commemorative medal to remind them of the occasion…. as if the frost bite and hyperthermia weren’t enough already. Individuals and Teams, dress in the most imaginative ways to make the event even more fun, and most “Dips” award prizes for the best dressed and for the person who has raised the most sponsorship money. Dare to give it a go and you will find that dipping at a beach on the Kent coast in watery winter sunshine is a world apart from being there in August as your tingling muscles return to life… you will be glad you took the plunge. Spectators are always welcome especially to encourage the hardy swimmers. Folkestone’s Boxing Day Dip take place at Folkestone’s Sunny Sands, registration 10.30am at the Ship Inn, Dip takes place at 11.30. Other Dips, Dover Harbour, and at Deal…. New Years Day sees the annual swim at Viking Bay Broadstairs (12 noon)
It’s that time of year again . . . time to dig out the Fancy Dress that you don’t mind getting soaked!

Theatre Tributes, Comedy, Drama, Musicals November / December 2014 The first step in Elkie’s musical career started in 1960, when at the tender age of 15, the young Elaine Bookbinder entered a very early reality type show at Manchester's Palace Theatre that promised to put the winner on a national pop package tour. Elkie was that winner, and that was the start of her life on the road and year one of the 50 year trip. In recent years Elkie's career has taken her in many different directions, from contemporary to traditional jazz, and even to Nashville for some country flavoured inspiration Long before the end of a live show and the frequent standing ovations that accompany it, there comes a point where Elkie does something so amazing that it leaves her audience almost spellbound. It could be a particularly emotional rendition of one of her ballads, a powerhouse blues vocal or one of her trademark impossibly long notes that leaves the audience mesmerised. Ray Coleman, the editor of the Melody Maker, summed that moment up brilliantly many years ago when he said ‘Midway through a haunting rendition of Lilac Wine you realised you were not witnessing a merely gifted singer but were in the presence of a superstar’. And at every concert there comes that palpable moment when the audience are left almost shell shocked and even Elkie herself knows she has done enough to leave no one unimpressed. The incredible journey of Elkie Brooks has reached a milestone of 50 years but she has not finished her travels yet. She is fighting fit, looking bloody amazing and more excited to be performing than when she first set out on the road. She is in full flight, all guns blazing, still aiming higher and it will be an honour and a privilege to watch any part of this unique journey.

Featuring a magnificent golden eagle with a seven-foot wingspan. The celebrated Chisinau National Opera and Philharmonic return after their critically acclaimed tour of Aida, Nabucco and La Boheme.A stunning traditional production recapturing the decadence of Renaissance Italy with lavish sets and opulent costumes. Verdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto is a dramatic tale of the jester’s daughter whose heart is stolen by a charming but unreliable ruler – and how her father’s attempts to prevent the love affair lead to tragedy. The opera was almost banned because it exposed the licentious behaviour of the powers-that-be at court. Featuring two of the most celebrated tenor arias La Donna è Mobile and Questa o Quella justly turned into classics by Caruso, Rigoletto is based on a play by Victor Hugo, who wrote Les Miserables.

Churchill Theatre Bromley Over the Rainbow - The Eva Cassidy Story 20th-22nd November Starring Bad Girls and Emmerdale actress Nicole Faraday Over the Rainbow is a compelling award-winning Musical, which tells the Life Story of this legendary artist, following Eva’s life through dramatic scenes and stunning live renditions of her music including a haunting interpretation of Somewhere over the Rainbow. This Award Winning Show has received plaudits from the Eva Cassidy Band and members of her family and contains projection and original footage from Eva Cassidy’s life, from an early age to her first professional gig aged 18, her first meeting with her boyfriend and mentor Chris Biondo, a rabblerousing rendition and recording at Blues Alley with Chuck Brown and culminating in her poignant and tragic death.
All Made Up 5th December All Made Up are a mix of talents. Actors from Grange Hill and Hollyoaks perform alongside theatre producers and TV directors. Stand ups stand alongside script writers. And advertising creatives act alongside the girl from the Argos alien advert. Together they create a unique combination of comedy, drama and nonsense that’s already sold-out two shows at The Churchill Theatre.
The Russian State Ballet perform 3 Ballets 26th-28th January The acclaimed Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia returns to the Churchill Theatre in January with a programme of 3 Ballets La Fille Mal Gardee 26 Jan. Coppelia 27 Jan. and Swan Lake 28 Jan. Formed in 1978 the Russian State Ballet of Siberia has established itself as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies, building an international reputation for delivering performances of outstanding quality and unusual depth. The soloists and corps de ballet never fail to delight with their breath-taking physical ability and dazzling costumes. La Fille Mal Gardee A gentle tale of love thwarted, unrequited and found. It is a masterpiece of comedy. With plenty of ribbons, romance and rivalry, La Fille Mal Gardée conjures up a world of pastoral simplicity where a farm boy woos a flirty farmer’s daughter and they find inventive ways to avoid her mother. Complete with virtuoso pas de deux, maypole and clog dances, this classic ballet will send you home happy, delighting those enjoying it for the very first time as well as those who want to see it again and again. Coppelia The light-hearted ballet is set in a quaint 19th century village, Galicia, where the eccentric toymaker Dr Coppelius has produced a doll so realistic he treats it as his daughter. Every toy has a story, especially in this charming comedy of errors, a witty combination of antics and abracadabra, set in a doll maker’s workshop. This light-hearted tale of mistaken identity and confused lover follows mischievous Swanilda, her impetuous suitor Franz and the eccentric toymaker Dr.Coppelius as they are brought to life by sparkling choreography and the animated score of Delibes. Swan Lake, the greatest romantic ballet of all time, brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all.

Justin Currie
De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill Saturday 8th November
After six albums with Del Amitri and three solo albums, what Currie has learned about songwriting is that you have to make yourself available to the muse. "Make sure you're bored", he says. "Make sure you're alone." David Garza plays guitar and piano, and other musicians include members of White Denim, Phosphorescent and the Heartless Bastards. Together, they help Currie navigate a filler-less album that begins with a funeral and ends with a wedding. On the buoyant, almost Badfingeresque I Hate Myself For Loving You and bijou, vintage beat-box propelled Priscilla, Currie's highly-attuned pop sensibility is well to the fore. There are few if any songs on Lower Reaches that don't have darker or more wistful undercurrents, however. Indeed, even On My Conscience - ostensibly a breezy, Byrds-go-Octopus's Garden-like palette cleanser - drips lyrical bile.Elsewhere, men - and perhaps women - of a certain age will identify with the conflicted protagonist of Half Of Me, a character torn between cordialenough domesticity and the need to 'Go out blazing trails in a haze of rock 'n' roll.' We say protagonist, but we of course mean Currie, a man honest enough to admit that, even as he approaches 49, fifty-percent of him still wants to traverse America in a tour bus. In truth, Currie can hold his head high, not least because he has just received props from the songwriter's songwriter, Jimmy Webb. Together with the likes of Brian Wilson and Kris Kristofferson. Iron & Wine
De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill Monday 17th November
Iron & Wine returns to Europe and the UK in November for a career spanning solo tour. Iron & Wine is the musical project of Sam Beam, a South Carolina-born former film studies lecturer, now living in Texas. A painter also, Beam’s roots in the visual arts signpost the refined and sombre storytelling that weaves throughout his music. With a softly spoken delivery conveying a certain cinematic gravitas, Beam conjures wonderfully evocative narratives rich in down-home symbolism and vivid characterization.

In 2007, Iron & Wine released the casually atmospheric The Shepherd’s Dog, which debuted at No. 24 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album chart and earned praise from critics hailing it as a major musical leap forward. Fleshed out and replete with more ornate arrangements than previous long players, The Shepherd’s Dog saw Iron & Wine ease into the mainstream, assisted in part by the presence of album track ‘Flightless Bird, American Mouth’ in the Twilight at the request of actor Kristen Stewart. His next album, Ghost on Ghost, followed only two years later, captured in New York with producer and longtime associate Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Califone, Fruit Bats). Released to near universal acclaim; Uncut rated the album nine out of ten, calling it "sublime ... a work of immense beauty and scale," while The Guardian said “Iron and Wine have risen to become one of the great modern American bands as quietly and stealthily as any of their songs.” It also earned five-star reviews from The Mail on Sunday, The Independent on Sunday, and The Daily Telegraph. Recently dubbed by the BBC as ‘The Man with the Golden Voice’, legendary Sheffield-born singer, songwriter and former frontman of Ace, Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics Paul Carrack returns to the road following his widely acclaimed recent album release ’ Rain or Shine’, a mix of new original songs and classic tracks.

The same year she started singing back-up for her brother both live and on record. Undoubtedly her own person, with her own sense of style, Martha creates her own music with an extraordinary versatile and compelling voice.

Bellowhead… 10th Anniversary UK Tour Winter Gardens Margate Tuesday 25th November
After their special sell-out 10th Anniversary shows at The Royal Albert Hall and Manchester Bridgewater Hall, awardwinning big band Bellowhead are delighted to continue the celebrations with the announcement of their biggest ever UK tour in November 2014. Since their formation in 2004 Bellowhead have occupied a unique place in Britain’s musical landscape: a blistering 11-piece band fusing folk, funk, rock, world, jazz, music hall and classical music, they have placed themselves at the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene while harnessing all the power and mystery of English and European musical traditions. Their most recent album ‘Broadside’ entered the UK album charts at number 16, spawned 3 play-listed singles on BBC Radio 2 and was voted ‘Best Album’ at the 2013 Folk Awards. But while their recorded exploits have gone from strength to strength, it’s their explosive, spectacular and theatrical live shows that win the most acclaim. 5-times winner of ‘Best Live Band’ at the Radio 2 Awards, Bellowhead have transported folk music into hitherto unknown territory and spearheaded the new folk boom. They are “the greatest live act in Britain” says BBC Radio 2’s Simon Mayo and the hordes of fans that treat every gig as a party clearly agree. Carmen
Astor Theatre Deal Friday 28 November
Set in the gay community of liberal 1920s Spain, Don José is the central character in the Secret Opera reworking of Bizet’s tragic opera. Sexually confused and dominated by the strictly religious upbringing imposed by his mother, he has come from the country to Seville to get a glimpse of the young man he has idolised from afar, the dancer, Carmen. This intimate production shows Bizet’s tale of love, passion, jealousy and anger between men. Performed in the round, with the audience on scene and free to move around the action, Secret Opera will give an unforgettable and heart-rending experience to all. Sung in English with piano accompaniment by Andrew Charity. The cast includes both operatic and musical theatre actors.
This Last Tempest…Uninvited Guests & Fuel Theatre Royal Margate Friday 28th & Saturday 29th November
This Last Tempest is a sequel to The Tempest and begins where Shakespeare left off. Caliban and Ariel are left alone on the enchanted island, watching Prospero’s ship sail over the horizon and out of view. Using the magic of the words Prospero taught them, his former servants, the “savage” and the “airy spirit” are free to begin again. They sing and perform wild tempests. As the storms rage endlessly around them they conjure-up their own brave new world, with new rules for a new society – where spirits and monsters are people and inanimate things are alive. Part theatre, part gig, this Last Tempest draws on Uninvited Guests’ collaborative approach to devised theatre. Working with composer and musician Neil Johnson, they fill this strange yet familiar island with guitar noise, evocative sounds and sweet airs.
David Gray plus Guests De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill Saturday 29th November
Twenty one years since his first studio album, David Gray’s tenth and latest, Mutineers, finds the singer-songwriter steering into unfamiliar territory while cultivating a pugnacious but respectful relationship with his own history. David’s past includes the phenomenal success of White Ladder (seven million copies sold), one of three UK number one albums, with records that became ubiquitous and others that needed to be sought out to be heard. It’s a richness of terrain and experience over a duration that belies the traditions and expectations of popular music as surely as the songs themselves. In a vocal shift David finds new sounds instantly audible on Mutineers, an album whose ancestry David sees as more in the neighbourhood of John Martyn’s Small Hours perhaps than its predecessors in his own catalogue. As well as the change in tone there’s a rising sense throughout the record, from the opening affirmation of “Back In The World” to its conclusion, of an artist liberated from even his own expectations.
Seann Walsh…The Lie-In King is back!
Exchange Studio & Hazlitt Theatre Maidstone Sunday 30th November
Seann Walsh has managed to search deep inside himself to find the inner strength to get out of bed and all the way into his support act's car, parked just outside his flat JUST FOR YOU. Before you commend him too much for this act of heroism, be aware he will sleep in the car. In his last show ’The Lie-In King’, 2013 Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee, Seann was living alone and trying to sort himself out. At 28 years of age he returns with his aptly named new show '28’ where he is now living with his girlfriend, and she is trying to sort him out. Star of Channel 4’s ‘Stand Up For The Week’, BBC1’s ‘Live At The Apollo’ and ‘Michael McIntryre’s Comedy Roadshow’, and Dave’s ‘Argumental’, Seann is a charming and charismatic natural born observational storyteller, and one of the most frighteningly precocious talents to emerge from the UK comedy circuit in years. Eric & Little Ern
Gulbenkian Theatre Canterbury Monday 1st December
This affectionate, moving and fantastically funny homage to the greatest comedy double act that Britain has ever seen vividly brings back warm memories of a bygone era. Recreating some of the finest moments of Eric and Ernie’s television and stage performances, cherished moments from the archives sit alongside new material created by the performers. Together they make a brilliant comedy that recreates the all-ages appeal of Morecambe and Wise in their heyday. The show tours for a strictly limited season following an acclaimed West End run, for which it received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Entertainment. ‘Ashpitel and Stephens have got the duo’s mannerisms down pat to such a winning extent. You could watch this for hours.’ ★★★★ Daily Telegraph

Roy Chubby Brown returns with his meatiest show yet! ‘Who Ate All The Pies?’ He’s still rude, he’s still crude and this time he’s turning headlines into punch lines as his riproaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across the country. Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing his outlandish views on news, women and gender, sailing so close to the mark, even the most seasoned of fans will be left gob-smacked! As politically incorrect as ever ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is far too rude for TV, so this live performance is the only place to catch the flamboyant comedian!

Martin Carthy
De La Warr Pavilion Sunday 14th December
For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. He's a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electricguitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic. `Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all' Q Magazine ‘Carthy is a master of the ballad of substance, songs that tell stories, whether they are traditional, his own or from contemporary writers.’ The Telegraph SATURDAY 6TH DECEMBER Astor Community Theatre Deal Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band Brook Theatre Chatham Poppy The Pirate & The Christmas Star childrens chow Gulbenkian Theatre Canterbury Gerard & The Watchmen Horsebridge Whitstable Christmas with the Crooner Leas Cliff Hall Folkestone 54321 It's The Manfreds In Concert Stag Theatre Sevenoaks Arthurs Dream Boat Stag Theatre Sevenoak Cinderella UKC Sports Hall University Of Kent Canterbury Oysterband White Rock Theatre Hastings Sing A Long A Frozen SUNDAY 7TH DECEMBER Brook Theatre Chatham Poppy The Pirate & The Christmas Star childrens show Horsebridge Whitstable,Horsebridge Christmas Market Leas Cliff Hall Folkestone Ellen Kent's Madama Butterfly MONDAY 8TH DECEMBER Orchard Theatre Dartford Bubbles & Buble TUESDAY 9TH DECEMBER Brook Theatre Chatham Poppy The Pirate & The Christmas Star childrens show De La War Pavilion Bexhill Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott Gulbenkian Theatre Canterbury Snow Play Marlowe Theatre Canterbury Sara Pascoe Vs History WEDNESDAY 10TH DECEMBER Brook Theatre Chatham Poppy The Pirate & The Christmas Star childrens show THURSDAY 11TH DECEMBER Central Theatre Chatham Aladdin FRIDAY 12TH DECEMBER Brook Theatre Chatham Poppy The Pirate & The Christmas Star childrens show Gulbenkian Theatre Canterbury James Kirby

And not in some dreary ‘authentic’ way that feels like a penance for the listener, but just natural. Bloodstone Blue A fresh and exciting new band with their own unique blend of Country, Rock and Blues.
Hailing from Mid Kent and fronted by vocalist, Rosie Horne, who is a familiar face on the Country Music circuit and a renowned singer/ songwriter in her own right, the band line up also includes guitarist Dave John Ross, bassist Peter Bolton and Lewis Clark on drums. Although predominantly Country, Rock and Blues, this power-house 4-piece outfit delight in taking hits from varying genres of the last several decades and firmly placing their own unique stamp on them. Influences come from the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Wynonna Judd and The Allman Brothers, to name but a few. The powertrio of instruments behind Rosie’s powerful voice gives this band a raw and hard-hitting edge, making up for even the most overly-produced of tracks that BLOODSTONE BLUE execute in their own stripped-down guitar, bass and drums format. As well as the laid-back Country and Blues that is featured in their set list, some of the more surprising covers presented by this band are songs such as the 80s classic anthems, Died in Your Arms Tonight (Cutting Crew), I Want To Know What Love Is’ (Foreigner) and ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ (Def Leppard). This band is certainly prepared to go off the beaten track and with Rosie’s renowned voice, sass and showmanship, backed up by a power-house trio of a band, BLOODSTONE BLUE aims to please, so be sure to check them out at a venue near you soon. The Bad Pandas: far from endangered 2014 has been quite a year for Kent based 5 piece Bad Pandas. “If you consider that we had our first practice together in September 2013… then the amount of noise about the band has been amazing” Lead singer Benji North looks like your archetypal rock front man; long hair, tattooed and rakish, he could easily be from a classic rock outfit from yesteryear! But the truth be known, rock is only one aspect of the Bad Pandas repertoire. Something that Benji is keen to point out, “The songs that we perform are so eclectic that it always keeps the audience guessing as to what they will hear next. it could be punk, grunge, disco or pop”. It’s this diversity which, along with their high energy pro performances and razor sharp sound that has catapulted the Pandas into the forefront of the Kent “If you consider that we cover scene. had our first practice
together in September 2013… then the amount of noise about the band has been amazing”
“The big difference was when we brought keyboards into the band” Benji reflects on the time before pandas. “Chris (Burgess -drums) had started playing with Graham (Webb-guitar), Jon (Simpson -Bass) and me after our last band broke up, but we couldn’t get anything going and we were close to jacking it in… It was then we decided on a change of direction, away from classic rock and open our music up to a wider audience” So the guys advertised for a keyboard player. Enter Nick Bennett. “ We got together for a jam, and it just clicked. We pretty much nailed the songs in one or two takes and we haven’t looked back” The band are now in high demand. Three pubs have asked them for residencies, they have been asked to play Halloween gigs by 6 different pubs, and their schedule is full ‘til the end of this year. “We’re inundated with gigs next year too, and we’re learning a lot of new material so we can keep the set fresh and varied” The Bad Pandas are making sure they play in as many pubs as possible next year, and all over the region. You can find them on Facebook or go to www.thebadpandas.com to check out their music and their gig calendar. From being close to extinction, it looks like, if Pandas want to flourish…. they have to be Bad. Now gigging..
The sound of classic Americana, from the heart of Kent One of the most enduring and interesting genres in the USA is still somewhat of a mystery to the majority of music listeners here in the UK, yet without realising it, we all probably know and enjoy some of the better known exponents, from Bob Dylan through Jackson Browne to Wilco and Ryan Adams. That genre is Americana, or alt-country as it is sometimes known - and right here in Kent there’s a band called Mashville that is trail blazing it’s way through the local music scene across the South East with some of the finest live music around. Mashville was formed in late 2012, after an initial couple of experimental rehearsal sessions where no-one really knew each other. With a gradually dawning realisation that as musicians the original four musicians shared a love of American roots music and brought an unusual combination of influences and styles that just worked together so much, a band with a distinctive sound was born. The band name was taken from an Alabama 3 track - another great British band best known for the theme to The Sopranos. The band is made up of Graham Loft on vocals and rhythm guitar, Berin Riley on lead guitar, Hedgy Murrin on drums and ‘Pic’ Hayes has recently stepped in on bass duties for original bassist Steve Vass who has stepped down due to other commitments. The band’s music is a unique crossover of roots, blues, country and rock - plenty of twang (but not really country!), plenty of power (but not all rock!), plenty of subtle dynamics and above all, as fans who have seen the band will testify - great instinctive musicianship with real imagination and originality. The band has attracted radio play in the UK and across the Channel in the Netherlands where they and the album were featured and CD’s given out as prizes in a radio competition. The band has been gigging extensively in 2014 and will be rehearsing in December for their follow up album which is scheduled to be recorded in January 2015. Gig dates, music and more info on the band can be found at www.mashvilleband.com UPCOMING GIGS Sat 1st November: The Ocean Inn, Dymchurch Sunday 2nd November: The Market Inn, Faversham Fri 28th November: The Neville Bull, Birling, West Malling
