Salvation Jayne Folkestone Quarterhouse Friday 4 October, 7pm Tickets: £8 Kent’s own alt-rockers Salvation Jayne celebrate their third birthday with a headline show at Folkestone Quarterhouse on Friday 4 October, with special guests Karobela and The Ovines. Having smashed their way into 2019 with packed-out shows including a major slot at Camden Rocks, a raucous set at Ramblin’ Man Fair and a brand new single ‘Jayne Doe’, Kent’s own Salvation Jayne are hotly tipped for big things. Formed in Canterbury in 2016, homegrown Kent talent Salvation Jayne are rising local stars. Described by Topper Headon from The Clash as “F****** brilliant!”, the female-led quartet make their own brand of dirty, fuzzy alt-rock and huge dream-pop hooks. Salvation Jayne are Chess on vocals, Tor on Drums, Holly on Guitar and Dan on Bass. “Salvation Jayne are justifiably rated as one of the UK’s most exciting up and coming bands” - Planet Rock Salvation Jayne will be joined on the bill by special guests, Kent alt-rockers Karobela and Medway indie punk band The Ovines on Friday 4 October at 7pm. Exciting and very diverse: Gulbenkian’s sensational autumn music season Gulbenkian, the University of Kent’s arts centre, is fast establishing itself as an important new music venue for Canterbury and East Kent. This autumn they are presenting a brilliant, diverse programme of live music, including Jazz, World Music, Folk and a series of female artists. Upcoming gigs include: Mon 16 Sep – Led Bib It’s Morning Mercury nominated Led Bib, pioneers of nu-Jazz perform their greatly anticipated new album (launching 27 Sep) at Gulbenkian – accompanying a specially created film. Fri 27 Sep – Emily Saunders Internationally renowned and critically acclaimed vocalist, songwriter, composer, and broadcaster Emily Saunders (“UK’s Queen of Jazz fusion” SnowBoy) takes the stage by storm, leading an exceptional band of stellar musicians through her spellbinding set of original songs and spoken word. Sat 28 Sep – Kanda Bongo Man One of the biggest stars in world music comes to Canterbury. Kanda Bongo Man played a key role in introducing African music to the mainstream in the late 80’s, he still delights audiences with his exhilarating performances. Fri 4 Oct – Jambinai (and Korean Festival Event) Making a huge splash on the music scene since performing at the 2018 Olympic winter games in PyeongChang Jambinai are in international demand – creating sensational post-rock using traditional Korean instruments. Gulbenkian’s Director, Oliver Carruthers, outlines the arts centre’s approach: “We get regularly told that Canterbury is lacking larger venue for live music, and so this year we are expanding our music offer and bringing some really exciting artists to East Kent. The University Of Kent has a rich history as a host for music events, and we want to build upon that this year bringing great new music to Gulbenkian – making it a regional centre for live music once again. Our approach is to work with local promoters. We have been working for a number of years with Folk in the Barn who have an established audience for folk music, and this year we have developed a Jazz strand with The Jazz Sessions based in Thanet, and our World Music strand developed in partnership with Canterbury based Music for Change. Being able to bring in amazing international artists like Jambinai and Maya Youssef alongside local talent like the Lunatraktors makes for a really exciting and diverse offer that we hope live music fans in Kent will love.” For a full list of events at Gulbenkian and to book tickets go to www.thegulbenkian.co.uk.

This year’s Folkestone Book Festival will take place from Friday 15 – Sunday 24 November and will be curated for the first time by Liam Browne and Sean Doran. The full programme will be announced in September 2019. Folkestone Book Festival holds a special place amongst the UK book festivals’ scene. It helps us make sense of the world and reveal possibilities for better futures. Entitled The Shape of Things to Come it draws inspiration from the philosophy and spirit of HG Wells, who lived and wrote in Folkestone. Taking place in November, the festival is an annual invitation to gather, tell stories, exchange ideas and keep warm together. The futures on all subjects will be the driving force of the new Festival vision. All subjects under the sun will be included. While this will not be an HG Wells festival, his philosophy and spirit, will inspire the Festival’s themes. Wells was a futurist who was interested in the everyday, a utopian as well as a realist and, seeing himself as a journalist more than literary lion, a pragmatist. He also lived in Folkestone and the Festival will draw further inspiration and relevance from the town. Chambers Book Festival Fringe Event Folkestone’s writing group, Write by the sea was devised by local lifestyle blogger Karen and has been running for almost a year now and improving all the time with many new members still coming along. We meet twice a month, once for a group meeting where we discuss, share work and I provide all the current news from the book industry. The other meeting is for a guest author, illustrator, freelancer or anyone from the huge book world to come and share their knowledge. I aim to keep everything free and open to everyone. During the Folkestone Book Festival we will be having a free fringe event at The Chambers in Folkestone, this will consist of over twenty authors having a table to promote their books, sign and sell them. Also having the time to chat to their readers and share their stories. This will run on the 21st November from 2pm until 6pm. There will be food and drink available to buy so we can also support Chambers who share their establishment for free. Please do pop along to this super event and share with your friends any questions please email Karen at karensworld.writer@yahoo.com https://folkestonewritebythesea.wordpress.com

Tokyo Tea Room + special guests L. Norton and Imperial Daze Folkestone Quarterhouse Friday 29 November, 7pm Tickets: £8

Canterbury natives, Tokyo Tea Room, play Folkestone Quarterhouse on Friday 29 November, with special guests L. Norton and Imperial Daze. Having graced the Quarterhouse stage at This is Psych earlier this year, the band are back for their first headline show to mark the launch of their as-yet-untitled EP on A Certain Kind Records. Formed in 2014, Tokyo Tea Room are the psych pop lovechild of Kent-based Daniel Elliott and Ben Marshall. Over the past five years, they have shared bills with the likes of Wolf Alice, The Mystery Jets and Super Furry Animals. With Daniel on keyboards and Ben on bass, the duo is joined by four of their closest friends and fellow musicians: Beth Plumb on vocals and keys, Sam Teather on drums, Ryan Debling and Graham Nunn on guitars. Expect a meeting of melodic bass lines, hypnotic guitar riffs and dreamy synths, all defining Tokyo Tea Room’s unique honeyed psychedelic sound and personality. The band have started a new chapter this year, releasing two singles in rapid succession. The response to ‘Forever Out of Time’ and ‘Always Tomorrow’ has been phenomenal, with widespread support from the likes of BBC Introducing, BBC 6Music and The Line of Best Fit. A third single, ‘Things Are Changing’, is scheduled for release in September. “Tokyo Tea Room are a band worth the buzz” Dork Magazine “Tokyo Tea Room bring a spectrum of chromatic colour to the Canterbury music scene” The Line of Best Fit “Music that makes you feel like you’ve departed the physical space around you” Impose Magazine Tokyo Tea Room will be joined on the bill by special guests L. Norton and Imperial Daze. Inspired by a new year’s resolution in 2018, L. Norton took to writing her own songs and as the year passed developed her own taste for production. Hailing from South East Kent, her first EP ‘SKIN’, released by 27:28 Records, combines electro and disco to express a sentiment of ‘doing it your way’, a mantra we should all expect from her coming releases. Her Musical style draws from a variety 70s female disco greats (Candi Staton/Donna Summer) to The Gorillaz and Little Dragon. Imperial Daze are a psych-pop band from South London influenced by the likes of Damon Albarn (Blur), Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) and Soulwax and have shared stages with The Maccabees, Mystery Jets and more. The band spent 2018 building their own studio: Electric Eel Studio in Tower Bridge, London. From there, they scored their first film soundtrack collaborating with Clan Collective on an upcoming collection of video works supporting Imperial Daze’s next releases. In the past two years, Imperial Daze have released five new songs making up their latest release on London/Chicago label Tip Top Recordings: ‘Surfaces Sensibles’. They have received BBC6 Music support, with plays by Amy Lame, Guy Garvey, and Lauren Laverne as well as playlist support from Radio X and Amazing Radio with extra spot plays from John Kennedy and Felix White. In July 2019 the band recorded a new EP that is set for release late 2019-early 2020.

Brad Pittance

In this issue we talk to one of Kent's busiest Musicians, Margate based Brad Pittance. Brad fronts three very different bands and over the last few years he has has performed 100's of gigs across Kent including regular performances at Brands Hatch, Broadstairs Bandstand, Dreamland as well as Corporate Summer Balls, Christmas Parties and gigs at Clubs and Pubs across the County of Kent and further afield. The Three Bands are Brad Pittance & the Pirates – Reggae and Ska, Nylon Tigers – Classic Pop Rock and Swing that thing – Swing and Jive Music “Music is my first love and I realised I did not want to continually play the same thing all of the time so it made sense to form another band as well - I spent some time fronting a Glam Rock band – Viagra Fools and it was great fun so when the Pirates went in the direction of Reggae and Ska the natural thing to do was to also have a Rock Band. Nylon Tigers do play some Glam Rock such as T. Rex & Bowie but also some more modern stuff from people like The White Stripes and Snow Patrol. I'm also a big fan of the Swing and Jive era and love artists like Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong as well as The Rat Pack etc so I also put a band together to play that material and Swing that Thing has been together for a couple of years now. Brad Pittance & the Pirates is the longest established and the busiest band but some like one of the others more. I'm good with that. It wouldn't be good for us all to like the same thing. I love playing in the different bands as it keeps things fresh in all of them. It is easy to understand how a touring band playing the same songs every night can start to get stale. Because I have the different bands that doesn't happen”. Brad is also a songwriter and he won The Singer/Song Writer Award at an event at The Kings Theatre in Ramsgate in front of a capacity crowd. The award was presented to Brad by the Actress, Brenda Blethyn. Brad Pittance & the Pirates recently appeared at The Cinque Port Arms New Romney Annual Music Festival and they are about to release a Live Album of Classic Reggae & Ska covers recorded at the event. “Brad Pittance & the Pirates Live & on the Lash” will be released on CD and available for download very soon. Brad Pittance and the Pirates celebrate the great Reggae and Old Skool Ska Music from artists including Bob Marley, Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker, The Police, UB40, Junior Murvin, The Specials, Madness, The Beat, Bad Manners Prince Buster. The line up is Brad Pittance – Lead Vocals and Accoustic guitar - Born in Greenwich - lives Margate Priyal de Zoysa – Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals - Born in Sri Lanka - lives Canterbury Matt Dickerson – Trumpet and Backing Vocals - Born & lives in Margate Maurizio Borgna – Bass guitar – Born in Italy - lives Ramsgate Simon Treadwell - Drums - Born in London - lives Margate James Taylor - Keyboards – lives Canterbury You can listen to the band at www.soundcloud.com/bradpittance or on youtube and can also find them on facebook.com/bradpittance

The Grand are putting on an event for local UK authors and you can come and meet all 22 Authors on the 25th October The idea started out as just an idea between the Grand and a local author (4 books in publication) and has now grown to 22 authors who will be present at the “Grand Selection Of Authors“ event.
