The White Cliffs Of Dover A trip to Dover would not be complete without a walk along the famous White Cliffs of Dover. Whilst enjoying the fantastic views across the English Channel why not take a 45 minute stroll to the newly opened Fan Bay Deep Shelter. This labyrinth of tunnels was constructed in the 1940s as part of Dover’s offensive and defensive gun batteries, designed to prevent enemy shipping moving freely in the English Channel. The shelter accommodated and catered for up to 185 soldiers, but was decommissioned in the 1950s and filled in during the 1970s.

Since being rediscovered following nearly two years of excavation work by the National Trust, you can now join our specialist guides on a hard hat, torch-lit tour deep into the heart of the White Cliffs, telling the story of the tunnel’s creation, use and final abandonment in the 1970s. Originally carved out of the chalk in just 100 days by Royal Engineers from the 172nd Tunnelling Company, the shelter is the largest of its kind in Dover and one of the deepest at

23 metres deep. Visitors can descend the original 125 steps into more than 3,500 square feet of tunnels which once housed the troops. Once here you will also be able to see two historic sound mirrors from the First World War which form part of the site. One of the first early warning devices invented in the world, sound mirrors gave advanced notice of approaching enemy aircraft but had become obsolete by 1935.

This fantastic experience costs just £10 per adult, £5 for children over 12 years and is free for National Trust members. Tickets must be purchased from the Fan Bay Ticket Office at the White Cliffs of Dover Visitor Centre where they are available on a first come first served basis.

Dover’s Past… brought back to life Dover Castle tells the story of 2000 years of history and remains the perfect place to discover a taste of England in a single visit. Amongst its many roles over the centuries, in the First World War the Dover area was officially designated as a fortress with Dover Castle acting as military headquarters. The latest attraction at the castle now tells this story.

Inside the magnificent Great Tower, step back in time to the Angevin Empire, of the 12-13th Century. Explore this medieval world full of larger than life characters, power and intrigue, from the kitchens through to the opulent bedchamber. On selected days the tower is brought to life by the castle’s costumed historical actors, vividly recreating the court of King Henry II. The actors are in the Great Tower daily during school holidays, and weekends April-September. The content and themes change from one month to the next and with the seasons, so there’s always something new to see and experience. You never know quite who you’re going to bump into from England’s dark and eventful past.

One hundred years after guns on the White Cliffs first successfully repelled a German Zeppelin raid, Dover Castle now again resounds to artillery fire following the restoration in 2015 of a rare antiaircraft gun used in the First World War. This example of a British 3-inch gun is the only working example of just six known to survive in the world. It now forms part of a replica anti-aircraft gun emplacement, where firing demonstrations are staged by an experienced troop of volunteers in full authentic costume. Don’t miss the gun firing at 1pm every weekend through the summer, at Dover Castle’s Fire Command Post.

A True English Pub Experience The White Horse Inn is reputed to be one of the town’s oldest residences, dating from 1365. It was built during the reign of Edward III as a dwelling for the Churchwarden of St James’ church, the remains of which can be seen next to the pub. Today The White Horse is a traditional English local pub with a good selection of real ales, lagers, wines and spirits. It also provides good food for those with a healthy appetite. Fresh beer battered cod and chips and Sunday roasts are especially recommended. The White Horse is known throughout the world as the Channel Swimmers pub with the interior walls of the pub adorned with the names, dates and times of successful Channel swimmers from all over the world. So if you want to sample the friendly welcoming atmosphere of a genuine English pub, enjoy fish and chips at its best and quaff good English beer then a visit to The White Horse is a must.

The Rack Of Ale, Dover’s Oldest Micropub

The Rack Of Ale is Dover’s oldest running micropub… a micropub is a pub with no bar – (micropubs are often too small to even have a bar!), no fruit machines, no TV’s or juke boxes. A micropub will only sell ‘Real Ale’. A micropub does not sell lager or spirits… just good cask ales and ciders (often locally produced). The feature of The Rack Of Ale is about encouraging the dying art of holding a pleasant conversation between friends and strangers (who hopefully become friends)… reading a paper or book – perhaps playing a few old fashioned table games etc… and of course encouraging the craft of real ales and ciders. Locally produced soft drinks and a decent cup of tea or coffee are also offered. Sadly we are not a fancy wine bar, just a classic, down to earth pub serving real ales and ciders, and according to our customers, we do offer the best atmosphere! You can find us in Park Place, Ladywell, opposite the Police Station.
