Oak, Charing A warm welcome for some locally-sourced, seasonal goodness.. The Oak can be found right in the heart of the pretty village of Charing. Well patronised by locals and visitors, the country inn offers a warm welcome to all guests. Whether you turn up there ravenous after a healthy walk in the beautiful countryside, or just want to meet friends there for a relaxed get-together meal, there’s plenty to choose from on the menu. Dishes range from the classic and unpretentious to something a little more elaborate for those feeling adventurous. Only the best and freshest ingredients are used at the Oak, and whenever possible are sourced locally. The fish comes from independent suppliers in both Rye Bay and Hythe, and the meat from local award-winning butchers. Because of being right in the heart of the Garden of England, a huge array of wonderful locally-grown fruit and vegetables are always available to be transformed into mouth-watering meals. Starters include delicious choices like: baked mushroom with melted goats cheese, baby leaves and basil oil; chef’s seasonal soup with home-made soda bread; and steamed mussels in a white wine garlic cream sauce. Prices range from £3.95-£5.50. Main courses are created using seasonal ingredients, so are always changing. Popular with diners recently were dishes such as: grilled fillet of bass served over a warm salad of braised fennel, finger beans and crushed potatoes and caper butter; apricot and garlic stuffed ballantine of chicken, poached and sliced over mustard crushed potatoes, with mange tout and lemon and tarragon sauce; and roasted pork tenderloin wrapped in pancetta, sliced and served over black pushing croutons, baby wedges and Savoy cabbage. Prices range from £7.95-£11.25. If you fancy some honest-to-goodness hearty pub classics, there’s scampi, steak and kidney suet pudding, homemade Oak burgers, or gammon, eggs and chips. Those with a sweet tooth can ponder over a selection of homemade desserts, puddings, ice creams and sorbets which change daily and can be found on the large dessert chalk board. And if you’d like to linger longer at the Oak, ask about their rooms. The bonus then is that you get to experience their popular breakfast as well! The Oak is in the High Street, Charing, Kent TN27 0HU, phone number 01233 712612

Hythe Bay Seafood Restaurant, Dover Straight from the sea, right by the sea ‘What a wonderful location. You can see Dover Castle, the White Cliffs, the French coast – you can watch some of the world’s finest and largest cruise ships and you can watch the ever evolving English Channel. Some days you will see swimmers training for that elusive cross-channel swim and you will be seeing youngsters learning to sail and develop their sea sport skills from the modern centre located beneath the restaurant. There are no lorries, cars or motor cycles and no pollution’ – these are the thoughts and observations of Turrloo Parrett as he takes coffee at his latest local venture, the branded Hythe Bay Seafood Restaurant on The Esplanade at Dover. He believes that this new restaurant has the finest location not only in Dover but anywhere on the South coast. He has now transformed the original café into a quality seafood restaurant similar to his existing restaurant of the same name in Hythe. This area of Dover has been significantly improved and beautified over the past months and has other good quality restaurants situated on this stretch of the sea front. There is plenty of free parking in the evenings and this area of shoreline provides a pleasant and accessible area for a stroll at any time of day. Locally grown fruit and vegetables will be used and the majority of fish served will also be locally sourced wherever possible. The menu also has non-fish and vegetarian options plus a children’s menu. Folkestone born, Turrloo Parrett who was educated at The Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone and now lives in Hythe, is no stranger to quality establishments. He bought Eastwell Manor in Ashford in 1995 when deteriorating eyesight forced him to relinquish a City career. There is a wonderful balcony area for al fresco dining and this has been fitted with external heating so that al fresco dining can take place most evenings whilst listening to the waves gently rolling in. The restaurant will be open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and there will be a facility for private functions. In addition to the Dover Restaurant, Turrloo Parrett owns and operates the original Hythe Bay Seafood Restaurant in Hythe. Once again this venue is in a prime location on the seafront in this delightful seaside town. Since opening in 2007 this has proved to be a very popular venue all year round as you can dine inside or outside according to the weather and view the ever changing vista over the sea and beach. It is the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by. Both restaurants offer the finest and freshest seafood, other quality products and an excellent wine list. One of the local producers is Simply Ice Creams which offers an amazing range of flavours. The best way to sample some of these is to order the Magnificent Seven – a platter of seven flavour ice creams chosen by the guest. It should be shared by two but it’s not compulsory! Age & Sons, Ramsgate Great food at the right price Age & Sons may be one of the most talked about restaurants in Ramsgate, but it is also one of the least known. Despite being in the centre of town, the charming converted Victorian warehouse is tucked away in a secluded leafy courtyard, and is one of Ramsgate’s best-kept secrets. Glowing reviews in The Independent, Sunday Telegraph and Evening Standard have spread the word though, and led to a growing number of diners seeking out the family-run restaurant, café and bar. Age & Sons prides itself in serving delicious seasonal food prepared by one of the UK’s most talented emergent young chefs, Toby Leigh. Wherever possible, locally-sourced produce is used. Fruit and vegetables are bought from nearby allotments, and the fish is collected straight off the boats bobbing in the harbour. Toby started his career at Kensington Place 12 years ago, before moving on to work for Alistair Little at his Notting Hill restaurant. He gained experience later in his training in a number of top restaurants, two of the most memorable being the Anchor and Hope in Waterloo -- where slow cooked food was shared by all the table -- and later at the Hinds Head, where he glimpsed the precision of Heston Blumenthal’s revolutionary style at first hand. Although Toby enjoys cooking meat and game, the heart of the menu at Age & Sons is the fish from the English Channel. There aren’t many restaurants in Britain that are able to say that the fish on the menu at lunch was still swimming at breakfast! Whet your appetite by checking out some of the dishes featured on the menu: Fennel, mozzarella & pea leaves salad £6.50; wild garlic risotto £6.50; scallops, cauliflower purée, chicory and curry butter £7.50; gnocchi with radicchio, butternut squash and mushrooms £11.00; Ramsgate Sea bass with salsify, spinach and Granville sauce £16.50; new season Kentish marsh lamb rack with samphire, sea kale, flageolet beans and sweet breads £19; and locally landed turbot with tagliatelle, cucumber, purple sprouting broccoli and oyster beure blanc £21.50. Discover Age & Sons, in Charlotte Court, Ramsgate, for yourself. It’s just off York Street, and is one minute from the sea front. Ring 01843 851515 for more details, or check out their website.

Old Dairy Brewery, Rolvenden Old Dairy Brewery is a traditional ale microbrewery with a custom-designed brew house, based in the weald of Kent. Set up at the end of 2009, the vision was, and still remains, to create “the perfect pint”. With capacity to brew up to 35 brewer’s barrels per week (a brewer’s barrel being 36 gallons / 288 pints) Old Dairy Brewery produces real, hand-crafted ale. What makes our beer so delicious is very simple; a passion for beer and never compromising on quality. And we care about our environment, so like to recycle, ensuring that our four-legged neighbours, the cows, benefit from the spent grain as fodder and the farmer gets to fertilise the land with the spent hops as well.

Food & Drink A Beer Fest is Best The combination of steam trains and beer sounds like the type of event some blokes dream about. And the dream becomes reality for two days in June when the Kent and East Sussex Rail Beer Festival takes place. Tenterden Station is the place to be on Friday and Saturday 15/16 June. Friday evening is for those who don’t want anything to spoil their concentration on the fine brews on offer, and is music-free. But Saturday is for the party people, and offers live music, Morris Dancers and other jollities -- and well as overflowing tankards! Check out festival@camra-afrm.org.uk for more details. Of course the other good place for beer festivals is your local…. and over the next few weeks of early summer there are a number of excellent beer and music festivals taking place. Jubilee weekend in June sees two local pubs - The George Hotel in Ashford, and the Duck Inn at Pett Bottom near Bridge - holding their beer and live music festivals, both featuring local bands and ales. The Lower Bell on Bluebell Hill A228 Maidstone stages its own music and beer festival in July, featuring an outdoor stage with three days of live music, and The Farriers Arms in Mersham holds its monster beer festival later in August. Real ale fans should also make a note of one of the best beer fests in Kent. The 38th Kent Beer Festival is on from Thursday July 19 - Saturday July 21 at the Barn at Merton Farm, Merton Lane, Canterbury. With more than 130 varieties of beer, cider and foreign beers, the CAMRAorganised event is an essential date in the real ale lovers’ calendar. There’s more to it than just beer though -- good food, live music and CAMRA merchandise make it one of the most popular summer fun occasions. Free shuttle buses will take you from Canterbury bus station to the event -- or why not get your sleeping bag out of mothballs and camp on the farm? For more information, see www.kentbeerfestival.com Keep an eye on next issue of W3 to check out more beer festivals across our region.

Theatre, Comedy, Music & Dance Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on Tour

As you Like It

THURS 5TH - SAT 7TH JULY 7.30PM For the second year running, The Globe Theatre opens its national tour in Margate. A reprisal of the Globe’s much loved 2011 production, As You Like It runs the glorious gamut of pastoral romance: cross-dressing and love-notes; poetry and brilliant conversation; gentle satire, slapstick and passion. Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match, but her usurping uncle, jealous of her popularity banishes her from court. Disguised as a boy she seeks out her father and his friends in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the arts of love. Performed on an Elizabethan inspired stage, a small troupe of travelling players breathes new life into this firm favourite among Shakespeare’s comedies. ‘Summer is all the sweeter for a Shakespeare road trip’ Daily Telegraph

Keane

MONDAY 4TH JUNE In the first of a series of Keane announcements, the band are pleased to release their UK tour dates beginning in May 2012. This will be their first UK tour in three years, the last of which culminated in two sold out O2 Arena shows. On finishing the recording of the new album in February Keane announced two special shows at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, a location close to their hearts as it was both their teenage haunt and near to where the album was recorded. They announced the dates in the local paper only and within 5 minutes they were sold out. This will be the first time fans will hear new material. Highly anticipated and years in the making the band recorded the album in the UK at Sea Fog, Ivor Novello Award winner Tim Rice-Oxley’s studio and are calling it their most personal record yet. Release details to be announced soon

HAZLITT THEATRE, MAIDSTONE Comedy Night:Miles Jupp Fibber in the heat WED 16 MAY 8.00PM Back in 2006, suddenly finding himself disillusioned with acting and comedy, former Perrier ward nominee Jupp decided to pack it all in and pursue a new dream of becoming a cricket journalist. After pulling a few strings and telling some little lies, he headed off to India in the company of the English press pack, under-prepared and under-qualified, to embark on what turned out to be a month-long, sun-soaked disaster (with the occasional minor triumph). This is the sorry tale of how a man attempted to become a cricket journalist by the unlikely, ill-thought out and dishonest method of pretending to be one. Miles Jupp, Nigel in the BAFTA winning Rev, is an award winning stand up and actor whose many television appearances include a memorable meeting In The Thick Of It with Malcolm Tucker, Have I Got News For You ,Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Argumental, Mock The Week, Just A Minute on television and radio, and an award winning appearance on Celebrity Mastermind. On film his appearances include Johnny English and Made In Dagenham.

The stuff of legends. In the past issue, little under two months ago, we were musing at just what may be in store for Kentish gig goers in 2012, as our wealth of local music festivals readied the press wires and rounded up the troops ahead of their first line-up announcements. And what a series of announcements it has been. In the absence of Glasto 2012 it would appear the market for heritage and prestigious acts has been blown wide open, and as a result many of these classic acts will be making their way across the English Channel to our very own county fayres.. Hop Farm are now well-versed in the arts of major musical announcements, and have hit us with not just bands but a whole additional event too.. Obviously not content with (the return of!) Bob Dylan, Primal Scream, Peter Gabriel, Suede and many more for their annual shindig at the start of July, Hop Farm have a new event in September, with the only UK date of the 2012 World tour of the one and only Leonard Cohen. Rock royalty does not get much cooler than that. Never to be outdone, Lounge On The Farm have announced the long awaited return of Dexys (Midnight Runners) and The Charlatans; in true alt fashion Hevy have gone for the legendary party-starter that is Andrew WK; and Quex Park have taken things to the next level organising a whole day of ‘retro’ indie - James, Echo & the Bunnymen & more.. It’s worth remembering that it’s not just about the big names and the bright lights however, and with plenty of music events going on from town to town across the county over the coming months, including the Deal Festival, Sandwich Festival, Smugglers Festival, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Hythe etc etc, there’s plenty around to keep you entertained. So now’s the time. Stop waiting and start packing the wellies. Festival season 2012 is truly here, and the earlier you get involved the better your tent pitch. Our facebook page is the place to follow all the info as it happens (W3 Gigs&Festivals 2012 calendar) and will be sharing the most tastiest bits of festival-related gossip on these very pages throughout the Summer.

29 June - 1 July 2012 Hop Farm, Paddock Wood

Joining Chic, Emile Sande and The Wombats on Merton Farm this summer will be the young soul rebels Dexys, and Tim Burgess’ indie stalwarts The Charlatans. Add in the customary selection for the kids (Zingzillas!) and some fantastic local food demos and LOTF looks nicely set for 2012. Emile Sande / The Wombats / The Charlatans / Chic ft. You could write a book on the size and quality of the 2012 line-up at the Hop Farm. So we’ll let the names do the talking.. Bob Dylan / Peter Gabriel / George Clinton / Suede / Richard Ashcroft / Patti Smith / Damien Rice / Ray Davies / The Stranglers / Primal Scream / Dr John / Billy Ocean / Kool & The Gang and of course, Sir Bruce Forsyth.. www.hopfarmfestival.com

28 & 29 July 2012 Quex Park, Margate

There is no-one or no-thing on this earth more symbolic of partying hard than new annoucement Andrew WK. This is a festival lineup that just keeps on giving.. Descendents / Andrew WK / Glassjaw / Meshuggah / Converge / Municipial Waste / Will Haven & many more..

Get down with the kids of today on the Sunday for Olly Murs & Rizzle Kicks & more tba, or act like a kid from yesteryear with the flashback festival line-up of James, Echo & the Bunnymen, Cast, Inspiral Carpets, The Farm & Space on Saturday 28 July.. Either way, a fantastic day in Thanet beckons..
