The Royal George -

‘Folkestone’s Harbour-side pub’

This ever popular long established pub, easily spotted and located smack bang in Folkestone Harbour’s new piazza, is an all day hang out which then eases into it’s role as a live music and karaoke venue at the weekends.

The large courtyard comes into it’s own in the summer and on milder days throughout the year, being a magnet for families eager to find a convenient place to have a drink and a bite to eat while the kids have fun in the Piazza’s fountains. On not so pleasant days, the big inside space is just as welcoming with it’s roaring fire to warm you up.

The food is good, fresh and local, and it’s not just the generous Sunday Roasts that are bringing in the customers… classic dishes such as Fish & Chips and Sausage & Mash with Onion gravy are delicious and hugely filling and there are several options for Vegetarians and should you have room, the pudding’s are fabulous.

The Royal George has also obviously come to the attention of a fair amount of cool kids and as the evening progresses it soon starts to fill with party people and music lovers out for a good time. The weekends are busy, the atmosphere is up-beat with a lively mix of people of all ages enjoying the al fresco experience in the day and the live entertainment at night. Live music is taken very seriously here and with the pub hosting a massive array of different bands from, rock, indie, punk, ska, reggae, blues, soul and RnB, depending on the band and the type of music playing on the night, the mood can range from appreciative swaying to full on mushing!... the type of crowd you’ll find here depends on the acts performing, but they’re friendly…live bands are what the Royal George thrives on!! A big enough space for bands to perform on Friday & Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, expect to see bands like Radio Riot on a Sunday afternoon, and other local bands from Mr Lazy to Skiffle It’s a roaring success…the Royal George’s mix of hip bands, as well as proper pub grub is a winning combination. The White Horse Inn, Bridge ‘A Fresh Start’ The White Horse Bridge has re-opened after a long closure to rave reviews from locals and visitors alike. New owners, Tony and Nicky Ray took on this exciting project in February 2011 and are delighted with the progress of the business in it’s first six months. Tony says “We were blown away by the pub’s unique layout. It’s large traditional bar area with it’s open fireplace and superb child friendly beer garden, perfect for summer days of BBQ’s and hog roasts. This, coupled with the separate restaurant, offers visitors the options of a simple drink with friends or a fine dining experience”. Head Chef, Ryan Meadows has worked closely with Tony and Nicky to develop a menu combining traditional seasonal dishes complete with his unique twists, plus some retro favourites from the past. Ryan says “We always source fresh local/seasonal ingredients and rotate our stock daily to maintain the freshness of our dishes. The fish on your plate today will have been caught last night and once it’s gone, it’s gone”. The White Horse is at the heart of the community and is popular for it’s live music Fridays (Every Friday) which are a great showcase for Kent based bands and a cracking good night out. The monthly cash prize quiz is keenly fought out by all who attend and tables are always sold out in advance. Tuesday is 2 for £20 night where any 2 restaurant main courses are available for £20. The Old Endeavour, A New Beginning

Bars have come and bars have gone, the ever changing face of Dover has seen the inevitable casualties as venues are taken over or demolished to make way for the local improvements. Luckily, mainstays like the Old Endeavour have been around for years, and with new owner Deborah Gunn, it will stick around for many more years to come. Having recently bought the lease from Shepherd Neame, Deborah has given the Old Endeavour a major facelift and refurbishment. You can’t help but be drawn to this laid back bar, sitting like a beacon in Dover’s London Road, and when you step inside you will find a very attractive, well planned bar with those quirky touches that offer genuine charm. You will be greeted by a simple space, a large bar and a few, very comfortable new sofas and chairs offering somewhere to sink into with a pint. Opening out as you walk to the back of the pub you’ll find a peaceful restaurant area overlooking the River Dour. The atmosphere is where the Endeavour really shines, even if you aren’t a regular, you’ll immediately feel at home, you can’t help being charmed by this clever use of small space. The pub crowd is a real mix of locals, office workers, and those canny enough to seek out this star find. You’ll find a good selection of draught beers and ales, and there are regular £2 drinks nights to help ease the strain on the pocket Along with a dedicated and courteous Landlady, the staff are friendly and passionate about the Old Endeavour and make the effort to engage in banter, it’s the kind of bar that you wished you had at the end of your road so you could make it your local!! Canterbury Festival – Funkier than you think! Kent’s International Arts Festival. 15-29 October 2011 www.canterburyfestival.co.uk Over the past few years strange things have been happening at the Canterbury Festival. Known as the cultural event of the county’s year – it has forever been associated with Cathedral concerts, classical orchestras, quality talks and fairly serious drama totalling 200 events in a fortnight each October. But if you think that’s all there is – you are missing out on a whole programme of great bands, top comedians, and free spectacular outdoor entertainment for all the family. The Festival kicks off on Saturday 15 October with a whole day of free street entertainment, a huge community Carnival Parade and a spectacular fire show finale from Kent’s best pyro-technicians The World Famous. Continuing the “world famous” theme – the fabulous Soweto Gospel Choir will be raising the roof of Canterbury Cathedral with their glorious harmonies and colourful costumes. There’s music from a host of different countries and traditions throughout the Festival – much of it centred in the intimate cabaret-style Club where the audience can really get up-close-and personal with the bands. Jazz, blues, folk, afro beat, funk and Appalachian music are all represented by players from Harare, South Africa, New Zealand, New Orleans – with a few of Kent’s best thrown into the mix. Great playing, great atmosphere and everyone feels very at home once they have a pint of Shep’s best in their hand. Hotly tipped among the best are Chimanimani, The Epstein and Wasabi. Of course some of the international musicians require a bigger stage. Canterbury Sound legends Caravan and the leader of New Orleans Revival Jazz Sammy Rimington are almost bound to sell out the 700 seat Shirley Hall while the high-energy Alejandro Toledo and the Magic Tombolinos are guaranteed to get you dancing to their Balkan Gypsy rhythms. If you haven’t heard of John McSherry – he is simply the world’s greatest Irish piper – and will be playing with his superb trio in Canterbury’s Gulbenkian Theatre. Those seeking a laugh will love The Boy with Tape on his Face – a smash hit direct from the Edinburgh Fringe. Famous faces in Comedy include Al Murray, Shappi Khorsandi and the Have I Got News For You star Jon Richardson. The witty Robin Ince (BBC Radio 4’s The Infinite Monkey Cage) joins a stand-up Mathematician, Albert Einstein (ok – not the real one!) and Lord Robert Winston (yes – the real one!) in a brand new collection of events which link Science and the Arts. There’s also plenty of laughs in the range of theatrical productions on offer. The highlight is The Dark Entry – a spooky Canterbury ghost story which leads the audience (only 30 per show) round the dim and scary grounds of the King’s School right to the scene of a grisly murder. Come prepared to walk, climb steps into inaccessible chambers, and confront the spectre of Nell Cook - the lethal housekeeper. Not for the faint-hearted but packed with sniggers as well as scares! Or you could come “Blind Dating” in one-woman comedy Sausage and Samosa by Elaine Pantling, enjoy a delicious dinner while watching Shakespeare á la Carte, or for those old enough to remember the hilarious Joyce Grenfell (“George ….don’t do that!”) there are still a few tickets left for her tribute Turn Back the Clock. The Festival runs until Saturday 29 October and each year promises “something for everyone”. It’s true! It’s so easy to book online at www.canterburyfestival. co.uk and although some of the shows sell out fast, it’s usually possible to pick up a ticket or two even at the last minute. So get organised – put down the remote for one night and come out in Canterbury. Running in association with the Festival is The Big Eat Out – a scheme in which lots of local restaurants offer special deals of two courses of food from £10. For “out-of-towners” The Big Sleepover highlights a range of local hotels and guest houses – full details on the website. So it’s not all art and arias – the Canterbury Festival majors on fun and top international entertainment at affordable prices. Check your diary from 15 – 29 October – and don’t miss it! 20

Tenterden Folk Festival THURSDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER TO SUNDAY 2ND OCTOBER Tenterden Folk Festival is a four day long festival of folk song, music and dance. Tenterden, is an ideal setting for this friendly, family folk festival. It features one of the widest High Streets in the country lined with historic and listed buildings, numerous friendly pubs and restaurants and green verges. Events at the festival include an English Barn Dance, concerts, sing-arounds, music sessions, folk clubs, special shows, a craft fair and street stalls, music fayre, dance displays, procession, showcases, meet the guest spots, workshops, dancers and musicians on the K&ES Railway, events for children and much more besides One of the highlights of Tenterden Folk Festival for many of the participants are the numerous friendly and informal sing-a-rounds and music sessions. With a choice of four town centre pubs there is sure to be a sing-a-round or session that suits your taste going on in one of these venues. Tenterden is “the Jewel of the Weald” and over the Festival weekend it has even more colour and sparkle than usual as up to 50 dance teams take to the streets of the town centre. The majority of teams are Morris dance sides of varying styles, from the Cotswold tradition and Black-faced Border style, to clog to garland dancers. It’s not just Morris you will see as Tenterden is regularly host to teams performing traditional dances from Scotland, Ireland, England, Slovakia and the Appalachian Mountains of North America. Saturday’s popular procession along the High Street culminates in a display of dancing in the coach park in Station Road and There will be dancing throughout the town and on the K&ES Railway on Saturday and Sunday. Interest in traditional folk song, music and dance is on the increase. Not only is it becoming increasing popular with younger people but it is also being featured more and more in general music programmes on both radio and TV. The sudden rise in popularity of The Fisherman’s Friends after years of singing for their own pleasure in Port Isaac only goes to illustrate this. However shanties have been sung in folk clubs, folk festivals and at tall ships events since the folk revival of the 1960 got underway and there are dozens of shanty crews singing across the whole of England. “The Cinque Ports Sea Songs and Shanties Session” will be held in the Evans Bar of the Tenterden Club on Saturday 1st October. The format involves festival guests leading the singing with the audience taking the part of the crew and joining in the choruses and most of the verses. Last year we had a crew of around 200 people and had to put the House Full signs up.!!

Turner Contemporary presents Nothing in the World But Youth 17 SEPTEMBER 2011-8 JANUARY 2012

The second exhibition at Turner Contemporary Nothing in the World but Youth brings together 200 works by 94 artists exploring how adolescent experience has been reflected in art and culture from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The exhibition reflects and examines the complex picture of teenage lives and the differing views society has of its young people through a selection of art works, objects and memorabilia. These include works by internationally and nationally acclaimed artists, writers, musicians and designers including Henry Moore, Peter Blake, Sarah Lucas, Andy Warhol, Mark Leckey, Jim Lambie and David Hockney. “Nothing in the World but Youth is an exciting and vibrant exhibition containing a very diverse range of work from JMW Turner to Jeff Wall. Although it focuses on what it is to be young, the theme is universal and the content will have resonances for both young and old. The theme of youth is also particularly relevant to Margate, and the town’s own connection with youth culture”- Victoria Pomery, Director Turner Contemporary. Using four main themes; Place, Space and Territory; Groups and Individuals; Rebellion and Responsibility and Boys, Girls, Sexuality and Growing up, the exhibition takes as its starting point Margate’s own past and sense of place. The exhibition celebrates early work made by JMW Turner; among the 15 works included are a sketch of his mother Mary Turner circa 1791, the oil painting Crossing the Brook 1815, watercolours of Margate including St John’s Church, Margate, 1784, A Street in Margate, Looking Down to the Harbour 1784 and a miniature SelfPortrait circa 1790.

The Kingsdown Band

… have been one of Kent’s foremost function bands for the last 22 years and with the current line-up, are as good as any similar professional band. The band was “formed” when Terry Poulson & Roger Cramphorn met at a Kingsdown School function in 1989 and discovered they had both played through the 60’s and notably, both performed at the legendary “Top Ten Club” and “Star” Club in Hamburg during that period. Neither having picked up a guitar for some years, it seemed like a good idea to get together. Living in the Deal area, there were several excellent “brass” musicians in the locality having settled here when they left the Royal Marines, and a 3 piece Brass section, Mick Murray, Jemma louise Duffield and Tony Willis, was added some years later. This led to the current 12 piece band, which consists of : three piece Brass Section (2 Saxes and Trumpet), Keyboards, Two Guitars, Bass & Drums, and at any one time there are up to four vocalists (2 male and 2 female). After several personnel changes along the way, they now have probably the best line up that the “Kingsdown Band” has ever had and the numbers have swelled to 12 musicians!! (In addition, they have their own sound and lighting engineers and this ensures that you hear and see the best possible performance) Their repertoire includes all the favourites from the 60s through to the present day and with a full, professional sound, and great stage presence, is the perfect compliment to any birthday, function or event. Originals Terry & Roger are still with the band and having just celebrated 22 years since their formation, they are now looking forward to the future with even more enthusiasm. For such a big band, they need a remarkable small area in which to perform, taking up a relatively small area of 18 Feet by 13 feet (or equivalent), so even if you’re a venue with limited space, you’ll be surprised to learn that the Kingsdown band can and do, play in some of the areas smaller venues. However, it’s fair to point out that due to the size of the band that venues which have any kind of sound limiting device fitted (that cannot be disabled), it is unlikely that they would be able to perform satisfactorily. The Bull Inn, Dover The Bull Inn, Dover expertly balances live music, great ales and a blistering match day atmosphere! This formerly low key pub has been taken over recently, and no expense has been spared on the external décor, family beer garden and skittle alley. This is a busy yet relaxed boozer.. great for a drink after work, especially when the footie is on, or a place to let your hair down at the weekend on one of the regular band nights. The Bull is a short walk from the town centre, but seems miles away from the marauding shoppers, great for a relaxed daytime drink and at night it transforms into the town’s up and coming live music venue, when you’ve finished working or shopping, it’s time to rock out… the Bull is the place for it. On match days concessions are made to fans of different clubs, and the TV action can be viewed from around the bar The Bull distinguishes itself on it’s great beer selection, with a constantly changing array of guest ales throughout the month. Folk Review by Doug Hudson The last big festival of the year kicks off at the end of the month when Tenterden Folk Festival takes place over the last weekend in September. The Town Hall stages a pre festival fund raiser with Ashley Hutchings and Blair Dunlop in concert with support from Steve O’Kane & Fiona McBain plus Barron Brady on Thursday 29th September. The festival proper runs until Sunday 2nd October with headliners Kimber’s Men, JigJaw and Pete Morton, but there is a large supporting cast and the attraction of Tenterden Festival is it’s intimacy and splendid music sessions that are always well attended. It’s very much a musicians’ festival but there is plenty for the non performer to enjoy with street entertainment, craft fairs and art exhibitions in addition to Morris dancing and concert performances. Tickets for camping and concerts are available online at www. tenterdenfoklfestival.org.uk and www.wegottickets.com/f/2350. Brandywine Music’s series of concerts continues in the autumn with The Hot Rats in St Edith’s Hall, Kemsing on Friday 30th September and the Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks hosting Heidi Talbot on Friday 21st October and Oysterband & June Tabor onm Friday 4th November. Have a look at their website www.brandywinemusic.co.uk for info on events and ticketing. Folk in the Barn is another folk initiative run by Debs Earl to further folk music in the county. She tends to go for current younger folk musicians although John Williams and John Etheridge don’t quite fall into that category with a show at St Mary’s Church - a converted arts centre - in Sandwich on 4th October. Four days later Turin Brakes are in concert with Blair Dunlop at the same venue. Thereafter you can book to see Nick Harper with support from Alister Atkin on Saturday 29th October in the Kingston Barn near Canterbury and on 11th November they have Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, check out www.folkinthebarn.co.uk for details. Medway Folkus also has some interesting dates for the autumn season with Folk at the Brook presenting Andy Cutting on 22nd September, Keith James with the songs of Leonard Cohen on October 20th and guitar supremo Gordon Giltrap on 22nd November. The Medway Folk Cellar meets at the sister theatre - the Central Theatre in Chatham - on Tuesday 4th October with Ruth Notman and November 1st with Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston. Try and negotiate your way through the complicated website www.whatsonmedway.co.uk by going to the online brochures for more details SUNDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER, Plough & Harrow Bridge, Whiteop Mountaineers WEDNESDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER Tartar Frigate Broadstairs, Folk Night Chimney Boy Faversham, Faversham Folk Club - singers night George Inn Molash Canterbury, Celtic Session 8pm THURSDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER Bear Faversham, Mixed Session Drum Stanford Nr Hythe, Folk at the Drum Chimney Boy Faversham, Open/Informal Folk Night FRIDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER Chimney Boy Faversham, Boneyard Junction (rock) SATURDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER Royal Native Oyster Stores Whitstable, Po’ Girl SUNDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER Fordwich Arms Forwich Canterbury, Fordwich Blues and Country Three Mariners Hythe, Mick & Nicks Traditional Music Evening Unicorn Bekesbourne Canterbury, CJ’s Open Stage WEDNESDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER Chimney Boy Faversham, Faversham Folk Club - The Askew Sisters George Inn Molash Canterbury, Celtic Session weekly Tartar Frigate Broadstairs, Folk Night THURSDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER Bear Faversham, Mixed Session Chimney Boy Faversham, Open/Informal Folk Night Drum Stanford Nr Hythe, Folk at the Drum Town Hall Tenterden, Ashley Hutchings and Blair Dunlop in Concert supported by Steve O’Kane & Fiona McBain FRIDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER RMA Club Opp Bandstand
